Interperative Hikes-Saturday July 23 & Saturday, August 13 at 9:30am

Grand Huts and the Fraser Valley Rec District invite you to join John Simmons of the US Forest Service for FREE explorative guided walks. Meet at the Berthoud Pass, 2nd Creek Trailhead and move up through the zones: riparian, subalpine and alpine, and the natural resources will be right there along the trail. This is a 2½ hour hike; one hour + interpretive hike up, ½ hour + to explore the area & Broome Hut, have lunch and hike down, on your own or with John Simmons. Come prepared for any weather and don’t forget the 10 essentials in your pack! (Bring drinking water - NO potable water source.) The Broome hut sits in the beautiful Second Creek basin at 11,350 ft. The trailhead is located at mile marker 240 on the west side of Berthoud Pass. The hike is 1 mile with an 800 ft. elevation gain, up a beautiful, well defined, subalpine trail that is suitable for all ages. Please note that dogs are not allowed at the Broome Hut. We discourage dogs in this over-used basin, and the cabin is adjacent to the Vasquez Wilderness where dogs must be on a leash. John has worked for the US Forest Service for nearly 10 years as a Visitor Information Specialist. Safety and Needs There are restrooms up at the Broome Hut, so that important item is taken care of. For such a short hike, The Updated Ten Essentials include: o 1. Nutrition (extra food) o 2. Hydration (extra water) o 3. Emergency Shelter (protective layers such as a rain coat/pants or poncho) o 4. Navigation (map, provided & compass) o 5. Sun Protection (sun screen & glasses & hat) o 6. Insulation (layered clothing for whatever weather conditions we face) o 7. Illumination (flashlight ) o 8. First Aid Supplies o 9. Fire (an easy way to make a fire) o 10. Repair Kit & Tools

When people walk communities become stronger. We meet neighbors, make new discoveries, and connect to things we care about like history and nature.

Sturdy hiking boots/shoes reccomended and a walking staff or hiking poles could help with stability on the steep and uneven terrain. A camera and binoculars would be essential for some! 29

The Functional Movement Screen is an assessment to document movement patterns that are key to normal function. Assessing these patterns, the FMS identifies functional limitations and asymmetries. These are issues that can reduce the effects of functional training and physical conditioning and distort body awareness. The FMS generates the Functional Movement Screen Score, which is used to target problems and track progress. This scoring system is directly linked to the most beneficial corrective exercises to restore mechanically sound movement patterns. The FMS score is used to track progress and identify exercises that will be most effective to restore proper movement and build strength.
