What kind of support do you get from the Captain and crew whilst on board?

When and why did you first decide to charter? We were looking for an epic family vacation and one of my girlfriends told me that chartering was the most epic of all vacations. My brother-in-law had worked with Fraser previously and just loved them. I contacted Liz Howard from Fraser immediately and voilà… the vacation of our dreams was completely set up by our specialist. From picking the daily menus and daily destinations to knowing what toys we were going to play with, everything was taken care of.

Chartering takes all the guess work out of vacationing. From the moment I contacted Fraser, I didn't have to worry about a thing. Without a doubt it is the easiest and most luxurious way to travel.

I will always leave the yacht up to Liz. She knows what we like and how we like to travel. It takes the guess work out because she is so knowledgeable! We usually travel last minute and Liz is a master at that as well. I know this sounds like an ad for Fraser... but they really have helped us with our most epic of epic vacations.

What are some of your best memories from a charter? Jet-skiing in the middle of the Exumas in water that was so clear, I could see every detail of the 20 starfish 10 feet below me! It was one of the most beautiful and peaceful experiences of my life. On that same charter the crew set up a BBQ dinner on a white-sand deserted island. The crew made sure that every single need and want was met. Then there is the memory of just sitting on the upper deck in the hot tub enjoying an amazing novel… it was pure bliss.

In order to give the Captain and crew time to prepare everything to your liking, complete the preference sheets provided by your charter broker. With details such as your food and drink preferences, what you like to read and where you want to go communicated in advance, everything will be ready for you on arrival so you can focus on enjoying your trip.

Chartering a yacht is always exciting whether it is your first time or your 15th, but the unique process and etiquette can make it a little daunting to the uninitiated. Your Fraser broker will be on hand to guide you each step along the way, supported by our company’s experienced and resourceful charter team. In the meantime, here are some useful tips and pointers to help prepare you for that first thrilling charter trip.

MONEY MATTERS

Yacht charter rates are usually based on seven full days, so if you start at noon on a Saturday you can stay until the following Saturday at noon. Longer bookings are of course possible, but some yachts will not accept bookings of less than a week during peak periods. Certain times of year command a higher weekly rate, such as during July and August or for events like the Cannes Film Festival or Monaco Grand Prix.

PLANNING YOUR BESPOKE CHARTER

To ensure you have the best choice of yachts possible, booking early is essential; some of the most popular or largest charter yachts can be booked up to a year in advance. As one of the most prestigious charter brokerages in the world, Fraser has access to over 3,000 yachts, including those not officially on the market.

The charter fee includes the cost of chartering the yacht, the crew and the yacht’s insurance. Fuel, dockage, food, beverages and other external costs are paid separately through the Advanced Provisioning Allowance, which is usually estimated to be an additional 20-35% of the charter fee, wired to the yacht by the charterer in advance. At the end of the trip, the Captain will account for any expenses incurred out of the APA and the remaining funds will be returned to the charterer.

Creating your charter plans and itinerary can be just as exciting as the trip itself. If you have an idea of where and when you would like to travel, your broker will be able to present a range of yachts in the region that suit your needs. If you are unsure about what is available in terms of destinations or types of charter, this is no problem. Fraser’s expert brokers have an encyclopaedic knowledge of what is on offer in terms of locations, the facilities and attributes of the yachts, and the skillsets of the crews. If you would like to bring your pet with you on a charter, let your charter broker know as soon as possible so they can find a pet-friendly yacht.

It is customary for guests to leave a gratuity for the crew, but this is entirely at your discretion. If you are satisfied with the service provided, a tip of 10-20% of the charter fee is typical; this can be given to the Captain at the end of the charter, to share among the crew.

FROZEN WONDERLAND Antarctica is one the few places left in the world to experience being truly at one with nature. King George Island is the largest of the South Shetland Islands and home to St Trinity, the first Orthodox church in Antarctica located at the Bellinghausen station in Maxwell Bay. Visit the ruins of an old whaling station or bathe in the thermally heated waters of Pendulum Cove. Sail overnight via Croker Passage and Gerlache Strait to the entrance of Neumayer Channel. This scenic channel paves the way to Port Lockroy and Base A; the former British station turned museum. See the Gentoo rookery at Jougla Point, observe the blue-eyed shags and composite whale skeleton reconstructed on the shore. Enjoy a scenic experience at Lemaire Channel, a steep-sided channel that is so photogenic it is nicknamed �Kodak Gap’. Paradise Harbour is undeniably beautiful with its majestic icebergs and mountains reflecting in the water. Take the tender for a spin and spot the local birds nesting in the cliffs.

Chinstrap and Gentoo rookeries abound at Hannah Point where you may also see the occasional Macaroni Penguin. From the lookout point above the hill, you can also observe Elephant Seals and Fur Seals.
