A

t the time of writing, in a worldwide market that is currently experiencing a 37% growth in yacht sales, 56 clients have now successfully closed on sales worth over €226.3 million with their Fraser Brokers this year.

In his exclusive interview with FUSE, Ian Worboys, Owner of the stunning 33.5M (110’) ROBBIE BOBBY, shares a taste of the gifts that yachts and yachting offer every generation of any family.

That’s 74% more than any year since 2009.

The Market Insight and tips on choosing the right yacht, whether you are buying or chartering, will help you savour the very best experience from the very start. The Yacht Galleries may even introduce you to your new ‘home’ this summer.

And a similar story is playing out worldwide right now with charter bookings and the demand to get away this summer season. In speaking with so many of these clients, one sentiment in particular seems to be underpinning their motivation and drive today: “if not now, then when?” Benjamin Franklin himself echoed this sentiment. His mantra was: “don't put off until tomorrow what you can do today.” And that’s a sense I think many of us, after all we have been through, can now relate to.

So whether you are, as one new Owner recently described it — pulling out the “why not” card from your back pocket, or you are seizing upon some carpe diem momentum, if the joys and inspirations of yachts and yachting have now found you, or you have decided to bring years of indecision to an end, on behalf of each and every one of our 170+ specialists and staff around the world… I look forward to ensuring every single one of those 86,400 seconds you spend on board turns out to be the most memorable of your life.

Of course, it is not just in the purchase or charter of yachts where procrastination has little benefit in our lives. But if there is one way to truly make the most of those 86,400 seconds we all have at our disposal every single day, it is quality time with family and friends on board a yacht in the destination of your choice, with everything you could dream of laid out before you.

MARKET INTELLIGENCE

I

f 2020 saw a seismic shift in demand worldwide for the ultimate safe escape to the sea on board a yacht, 2021 is seeing that demand grow even stronger, and faster than ever. Worldwide yacht sales (+24M/79’) more than doubled in the first three months of this year compared to any Q1 on record, and Fraser is experiencing our best year of the last 13 for the number of yachts sold and the total last asking price, as well as average LOA.*

CHARTER IS FULLY OPEN FOR BUSINESS…

In addition, demand for charter yachts in the Bahamas and Caribbean, whilst very last minute, has surged to a 4-year high as more of us are realising the unique benefits yachting has to offer. Across the industry, we are seeing signs that the summer season in the Mediterranean will play out in a very similar fashion.

“Between bookings delayed from 2020, Owners of charter yachts keen to use their vessels this year, and new bookings from new and existing clients looking for a last-minute, safe and reliable holiday option, the summer season is a hive of activity,” says Charter Broker Nicola Breymaier.

SELLING? DEMAND HAS NEVER BEEN HIGHER

As the record numbers of yachts sold over the last 12-18 months show, the unique benefits of yachting have come into their own more than ever before. 494 yachts were sold in 2020 alone — that is more yacht purchases made in a single year than any other year since records began over a decade ago. And in only the first four months of 2021, 249 yachts were sold, significantly outperforming every previous year since records began in 2009. Yacht sales are up +137% on 2020, up +104% on 2019, and up +137% on the average for the last 12 years. The total value of sales is up +67% on 2020 and up +99% on the average for the last 12 years.* There has never been a better time to sell.

The drive to escape, live, work and learn on the water has also driven a significant increase in families looking to charter yachts. The combination of countries opening, thanks to the extensive roll-out of vaccinations, and yachts being fully COVID-ready in terms of strict sanitation protocols, means Charterers are keen to book their next escape and are far less limited in terms of destinations.

“May saw the beginning of more bookings for the Mediterranean as the various European governments started to lift restrictions,” says Charter Broker Frances Edgeworth. The success of the winter 2020-2021 Caribbean & Bahamas season also looks set to continue, with plenty of yachts on offer to US-based guests looking for an accessible escape. “The Bahamas is going to have another really strong summer charter season, as the country lifted more restrictions and a number of large yachts decided not to venture to the Med this summer,” adds Charter Broker Melanie Burke. …AS THE WORLDWIDE CHARTER FLEET LOOKS SET TO EXPAND

TIME

THE WORLD HAS DISCOVERED YACHTS AND YACHTING. WHETHER YOU ARE BUYING, SELLING, BUILDING OR CHARTERING — NOW IS THE TIME TO ACT BUYERS: 2021 IS YOUR YEAR

From the data, one thing is clear: the unparalleled joys and tangible benefits of yachting are being discovered and enjoyed by more of us than ever – in many cases for the first time, as evidenced by the increase in the entry-level 24-40M (80’-130’) sector (see graph opposite). “Faced with the challenges of the pandemic, those who have been thinking for years of buying a boat one day are finally telling themselves: today is the day,” says Sales Broker David Legrand. “Many are being hit with a real reminder that life is short — why put off buying a yacht when you could be on board enjoying it right now?” This sentiment is far from unique to the superyacht sector: in the recreational pleasure craft market, the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) is seeing US boat sales across all size ranges reach a 13-year high. Of course, the surge in sales is also being seen as more families and friends realise that yachts are the perfect option for safe, secure travel and vacations. “Many realised that spending time on a yacht, with only those guests you choose and a crew who work under strict sanitary protocols, offers a controlled environment that today is the only way to enjoy true relaxation,” says Sales Broker Alex Krykanyuk. “And unlike a private island or villa, on a yacht you can wake with a different view every day, explore freely and go where you want — with all the comforts, facilities and technology you have at home, and often even more.”

the last year are now looking to make their yacht available for charter — which means guests can expect an even greater choice of yachts to charter in the coming years. “For new Owners, this is an excellent time to appoint a Charter Manager and start putting together the marketing strategy and groundwork for the winter season 2021/2022 or even summer 2022,” says Fraser Head of Charter Management USA Kellie Shoemaker. (See our feature on page 6 for where to start). NEW-BUILD OPPORTUNITIES ARE THERE AS MORE BUYERS SEARCH FOR OPERATIONAL EFFICIENCY

The new build market is looking at its healthiest in years, too. 2020 registered an increase in new builds of 133% on 2019, and projects due for delivery in 2022-23 are seeing a 67% increase on 2021 deliveries. Of Fraser’s Q1 2021 sales, 23% were new-build purchases. And as more Buyers, both first-time and experienced, seek enhanced operational efficiency, Fraser’s Management fleet passed the milestone of 100 yachts from 24M-130M (78’-426’). What is certain is that more of us than ever before will reap the rewards of yachting in the coming months and years. As Fraser CEO Raphael Sauleau puts it: “All the benefits, joys and rewards, we as an industry have been aware of for many years, are now on the radar of a larger audience. And that has been, and continues to be, a joy to witness.” *Source: Fraser Central Intelligence Department

T

he last 18 months have seen a huge increase not only in sales, but in the motivations and objectives of Buyers.

“More and more clients are looking to buy a yacht not only for themselves, but with the goal of also creating a successful charter operation,” says Sales Broker Marco Fodale. “I would say in around 30% of our sales today, the Buyer will ask: which yachts are most attractive to Charterers, and why? For many clients, charter potential is a key element in any yacht selection I present to them.” WHY BUY A YACHT TO CHARTER OUT?

This surge comes as more Owners than ever are seeing the benefits of chartering out their yachts. One recent Buyer of a 40M (131’) yacht told us: “When I decided to buy a yacht, I knew from the outset I wanted to run it as a charter operation when my family and I couldn’t be on board. Keeping the crew busy and happy means I’ve had no crew churn for the last year and my crew is always fully ‘service-ready’ when I go on board. Plus, the yacht is kept in immaculate shape year-round!” Another Owner of a 26M (85’) sailing yacht said: “Running real estate businesses meant I approached buying a yacht, as I do everything, with the aim of optimising my financial wins. Chartering her out has not only given me a pretty reliable revenue stream, but I know that when I do choose to sell, a successful charter yacht kept in impeccable condition will get me the best price.” WHAT SUPPORT DO I NEED?

Securing an experienced Charter Manager is a vital early step in your process. A Charter Manager’s insight adds value to your operation long before your yacht becomes available for charter. By advising on the charter potential of the yachts your Sales Broker is showing you, they can help to ensure you make the best purchase decision to achieve your goals. As a guideline, on the following pages, we have highlighted just some of the factors your Charter Manager, working alongside your Sales Broker, will be able to advise you on in your search for a yacht that suits both your needs and current charter market demand.

YACHT PURCHASE

WHAT SHOULD I LOOK FOR IN MY NEW YACHT?

Decided to buy a charter yacht but unsure what to look for and where to start? Here, we break down the qualities the top-booking yachts possess that bring enquiries and ultimately get charter guests on board. 1. A SOLID CHARTER REPUTATION

“The simplest way to own a successful charter yacht? Buy a yacht with an existing charter record,” says Daniela De Marco, Head of Charter Management Europe. “Yachts with a good reputation among brokers and a raft of positive guest feedback are ready to gain an even better name on the charter market under new ownership.” However, as a Buyer you are in no way restricted to only successful charter yachts. Look for or implement the following assets, found on all the best charter yachts, and your yacht will be perfectly placed to secure quality and repeat charter guests. 6. THE INSIDER’S TOY CHEST 2. A CHARTER-READY, MULTI-TASKING CREW

Every Owner wants a top-class crew, but successful charter operations require specific crew skills. With the help of your crew recruitment company and Captain, source a crew with proven experience on busy charter yachts, ideally those who double up their skillsets. “Look for a stewardess who is also a trained masseuse/ beauty therapist and deckhands who are also expert watersports instructors and you will be offering guests added extras without the need to hire additional staff,” recommends Head of Charter Management USA Kellie Shoemaker. 3. THE HIGHEST NUMBER OF SUITES POSSIBLE

“While your family may only need three suites, maximising the number of berths available opens up your yacht to more potential charter parties,” explains De Marco. “Offering six suites is great, but having seven or even eight is even better, as long as they are all a decent size. For groups of friends, having an extra suite can help with accommodation arrangements — same if you have children who do not want to share.” 4. TOP CONDITION

It goes without saying that Charterers expect flawlessness throughout, from decks and interiors to features and furnishings. “When deciding between a yacht that I could refit to my exact preferences and one that was in fantastic condition, I knew that any works would significantly delay her entry to the charter market and my revenues,” says an Owner of a 52M (170’) yacht. “It was a tough one, but I chose the charter-ready option and have never looked back.” 5. A GREAT WATER-LEVEL SPACE

“Beach clubs are more popular than ever,” says De Marco. “Ideally, choose a yacht with a sizeable lower-deck space for socialising or wellbeing, with a sauna, massage space and perhaps a bar or a lounge with big screens. For smaller yachts, it’s important to ensure there is a spacious swim platform with a shower and room for a couple of chairs for cocktails.”

“We have a ‘hot list’ of toys that we always recommend new Owners load up with — it’s one of the easiest changes to make once you’ve taken ownership,” says Shoemaker. “Jet-skis, Seabobs, waverunners, water-skis, paddle boards, sailing dinghies and a great set of inflatables including a water slide and anti-jellyfish pool are a good start. If you have room, dive gear opens up the yacht for even more on-the-water activities.” Ready to buy the ultimate charter yacht, but prefer to have a trusted charter expert on your team, working alongside your Sales Broker to ensure your purchase is 100% optimised for charter? THE MOST REQUESTED CHARTER FACILITIES

Depending on your yacht’s size range, key onboard features can significantly boost her appeal. As this Owner of a 64M (210’) yacht found out, it’s a good idea to seek advice from both a Sales Broker and a Charter Manager. “I worked with both a Fraser Sales Broker and a Charter Manager, and they shared with me their two different perspectives on the yacht,” he says. “My Broker helped me make sure I got the right boat for me, but the Charter Manager was able to point out the features on board each of the yachts I was considering that are most attractive for Charterers.” The most popular features include:

— Hot tub and/or swimming pool — Wellbeing facilities: sauna, massage room, spa — Plentiful spaces for sunbathing and outdoor dining — Cinema (indoor and/or outdoor on deck) — Gaming and entertainment facilities

OWNER Meet the

IAN WORBOYS, OWNER OF 33.5M (109’11“) ROBBIE BOBBY, ON WHAT HE LOVES ABOUT HIS YACHT

WATCH VIDEO

T

here is no greater feeling than being on board your own yacht, surrounded by loved ones, in your favourite destination. For Ian Worboys, the Owner of 33.5M (109’11“) Lynx ROBBIE BOBBY, available to charter or buy with Fraser, his yacht is a family sanctuary. A safe haven. A space where his family can be together, doing what they love. And for the charter guests who come on board, the experience is just as unforgettable. “The experience we’ve aimed at on ROBBIE BOBBY is a six-star experience for charter guests, and it’s the same for myself and my family when we’re on board,” he says. And that experience, as every Owner knows, begins with the crew. “We have a fantastic crew that have now been on board for up to 3 years. I travel a lot and like to holiday all over the world, so I know what one would expect at hotels and the crew are all trained at that level. I recently stayed at the Four Seasons in Istanbul, and they had some very good people, but every one of our crew, I’d say, is better.”

experiences,” he says, citing Corsica and Sardinia as one of his favourite cruising grounds. “We’ve been going there for four years and we keep finding new bays and new areas we haven’t seen before. One thing I love about yachting is that there is a community amongst Captains, to help each other find the more hidden bays.” And when it comes to being at anchor in such a bay, there is no better place Ian prefers to spend it than on ROBBIE BOBBY’s huge sundeck, which he extended by 30 square metres (323 square feet) soon after he bought the yacht. “We’ve got a mix of everything up there: dining, a barbecue, and a bar area on the same level as the Jacuzzi, so everyone can be in different places but still talking. And we put in an amazing sound system throughout the whole of the boat a few years ago. So during the day, the sundeck really is the place to be.”

The crew, he adds, have also become friends, sharing with the family their love of the ocean and what it offers. “The Captain is a passionate fisherman and got us in to it, too. Now, we can’t wait to get on board, get up at 5am, go fishing, come back for breakfast at 8am and start our day beautifully.” A typical day on board for Ian and his family, including children in their twenties and thirties and a young grandson, starts with this early-morning fishing excursion, then rolls into active days on the yacht’s many toys and relaxed evenings with the freshest food. “My girlfriend will go for a couple of hours paddle boarding every day and the kids love the Hobie stand-up pedal boards, they are great for fitness. We also have an extremely fun Spark Trixx jet-ski. We are very much a fitness freak family, so for us using the toys is special. And we love eating as well! We have a great chef, Luiz, and his food is just stunning — he does fusion Asian-European. When we catch tuna or sea bass, which we do regularly, he’s able to take the fish and prepare it perfectly — some raw and some cooked.” One of the pleasures of dining on board for Ian and his family is enjoying a new backdrop for every meal. “On a yacht, literally one day to another, you can be having breakfast sitting in one cove, lunch in another and dinner in another, and they’re only one-hour sails in between but you have completely different

“THE BOAT IS A REAL FAMILY PLACE, SO HAVING SPACE WAS IMPORTANT.”

ROBBIE BOBBY was chosen — and refitted — to prioritise space and safety for family and guests. When he decided to buy, he initially looked at sailing yachts after chartering one every year, but quickly moved over to motor yachts when he realised he wanted the maximum guest space and volume. “The boat is a real family place, so having space was important,” he says. “On ROBBIE BOBBY, we’ve probably got more space than most 40-45M (130’-147’) yachts – the volume is massive (287GT). It is very much a family yacht. It’s got five cabins but actually with Pullmans can take 12 guests, so for children it’s great. It’s very safe and stable because it’s a steel hull, and we’ve got stabilisers on board. It really is a solid boat — I knew I’d be having grandchildren so I wanted to be sure they’d be safe.”

Now, a few years later, he is discovering just how meaningful it is to create memories on board for those grandchildren, and the rest of the family, and the crew have magicked up some experiences that Ian will never forget. “There are two or three particularly special days on board that I treasure,” he says. “In Corsica, the crew found a completely isolated beach you can only reach by boat, and they made an Arabic evening with a fire and toasted marshmallows. My grandson was just over the moon with it — it’s one of those things you can picture him remembering forever. Then, we were on board for Halloween last year, and the chief stew and the stewardess transformed the whole main dining area with spiders’ webs, eyeballs, everything — they spent about 3 hours doing it up. It was the best effect I’ve seen anywhere, let alone on a boat. And the crew got made up, put on costumes and had bought them for us without telling us. The menu was created for Halloween as well. It was very, very special.” With future generations in mind, Ian is also a supporter of green yachting. “One of my criteria when buying was to be fairly green, with low consumption of fuel: we can cruise at about 100-110 litres an hour, which for a 33.5M (109’1 1“) boat is very low consumption. One of the first things we did was to get rid of all the plastic water bottles on board and put in filtered water taps. When guests come on board we give them a reusable S’well bottle with their name on which they use all trip. We have also helped cleaned up plastic from some of the beaches we go to. I think there is a change in the yachting industry to become more green-minded.” As ROBBIE BOBBY’s busy Mediterranean summer calendar proves, guests are returning year after year. “We’ve got so many repeat charters this year — the calendar is almost filled up,” says Ian. The ultimate testament to a yacht that will be enjoyed as much by every guest as she is by her Owner. To find out more about ROBBIE BOBBY visit fraseryachts.com/en/yacht-for-sale/robbie-bobby

ON WORKING WITH FRASER…

“When I was first buying a boat, we went to the Monaco Yacht Show and met various brokerages, and then I met JJ [Fraser Broker Jan-Jaap Minnema]. He treated us very well immediately, took us round the boats and over the next few weeks and months took us around more, and we loved his professionalism and the way he did things. From him we then met the Fraser team, and we decided to keep the boat with Fraser. Charter Manager Alexia is a superstar at working with the Captain and with us to fill the charter season. We had one of our busiest seasons last year, when a lot of boats had zero charters! And that’s a mixture of the boat and Fraser.” Interested in buying or chartering ROBBIE BOBBY? WORLD OPENS UP

LOOKING FOR A NEW AND EXTRAORDINARY DESTINATION FOR YOUR NEXT CHARTER? DISCOVER THE UNIQUE WILDLIFE AND LANDSCAPES OF COSTA RICA, SOON TO BE FULLY ACCESSIBLE TO YACHTS OVER 24M (79’) AFTER SUCCESSFUL LOBBYING BY FRASER AND THE COSTA RICA MARINA ASSOCIATION

magine waking to the sound of tropical birds overhead and howler monkeys in the distance. Step out on deck and you will be greeted by the sight of lush green rainforests, fringed by white-sand beaches, all just a quick tender ride away. Look up, and you’ll see colourful parrots circling ahead. Glance into the ocean and you might spot a white tip shark — or even a humpback whale. This is how every day starts on a yacht charter in Costa Rica, where the simple pleasures of Pura Vida, the pure life, are the only ones that matter. And thanks to a new law to facilitate easier access to and within Costa Rica’s waters by foreign large yacht operations, more Charterers than ever before can fulfil their dream of exploring the 800 miles of coastline and unique biodiversity of this spectacular country. On any given day on charter, you might find yourself on a jet-ski or paddle board tour through the calm green of a mangrove forest. Later, head out on the tender to fish for the evening’s

mahi mahi, or go scuba diving to encounter eagle rays, white tip sharks and countless species of colourful fish. How would you like to ride on horseback through jungles, take a canopy zipline tour over emerald rainforests or take a jeep up to a waterfall hiking trail? Or take a mangrove river tour through the labyrinthine waters of Rio Sierpe with a local naturalist guide? Or perhaps you prefer to hike one of Costa Rica’s 28 national parks, where you will find cloud forests, coral reefs, active volcanoes, hot springs and beaches full of sea turtles when they come ashore to nest and hatch. Costa Rica’s wildlife diversity is an experience in itself: it is home to over 500,000 species, nearly 6% of the world’s biodiversity. Many, including the Cocos finch and the squirrel monkey, are found nowhere else on earth. With 25% of the country protected land, it is also a refuge for many of the world’s endangered species, including the leatherback turtle, West Indian manatee, Scarlet Macaw and Resplendent Quetzal. Explore on your own terms, with the best experts in the land, and the comforts of a luxury yacht ready to return to at the end of a busy day of adventure.

COSTA RICA

Take it from Jeff Duchesneau of Marina Pez Vela and the Costa Rica Marina Association. “Why Costa Rica? It’s an amazing wildlife place, the surfing is amazing, the sportsfishing is amazing and the people here are wonderful, friendly and welcoming. We have super pods of 1,000 spinner dolphins travelling together and that is an incredible thing to see by spotter plane or to swim with on a Seabob. Sportsfishermen have to check out the Seamounts off the Pacific Coast, where you can get 40 shots a day on blue marlin, something you can’t do in a lot of places in the world.” As well as being the ideal year-round West Coast North American cruising area (with the exception of perhaps September and October), Costa Rica is the perfect fit for a family looking for an experience they have never had before, and perfect for anyone who vacations with ecotourism in mind. “This reform opens up a new and beautiful cruising ground for our clients who have travelled so much in the Caribbean and are ready for a new adventure,” says Fraser Charter Broker Debra Blackburn. “And that’s just what they’ll find in Costa Rica.” To book a charter, contact yachtcharter@fraseryachts.com

ease of use and a rapid response to deter or remove any threat. The vessel is fitted with the latest security technology, including specialist radars, long-range optical and infra-red cameras, underwater sonar and countermeasure, as well as intelligent AI driven software that automatically detects, verifies, and alerts to potential threats on a 360 degree basis. NiDAR’s superior AI threat recognition ensures the security teams are only alerted to critical events, significantly increasing detection and reducing false alerts. Designed by Sam Sorgiovanni, built by Vikal International, M/Y MARSS is equipped with water-jet propulsion and twin MTU engines and is capable of top speeds of over 35 knots and a range of over 300 nautical miles. With a shallow draft and generous width she is able to comfortably access areas that a deeper draft vessel would be unable to reach. The vessel can comfortably accommodate a complement of 4, with a large full-width main saloon and 2 double cabins. All security equipment is seamlessly integrated into yacht interior and exterior in a non-obstructive manner.
