A

t the time of writing, in a worldwide market that is currently experiencing a 37% growth in yacht sales, 56 clients have now successfully closed on sales worth over €226.3 million with their Fraser Brokers this year.

In his exclusive interview with FUSE, Ian Worboys, Owner of the stunning 33.5M (110’) ROBBIE BOBBY, shares a taste of the gifts that yachts and yachting offer every generation of any family.

That’s 74% more than any year since 2009.

The Market Insight and tips on choosing the right yacht, whether you are buying or chartering, will help you savour the very best experience from the very start. The Yacht Galleries may even introduce you to your new ‘home’ this summer.

And a similar story is playing out worldwide right now with charter bookings and the demand to get away this summer season. In speaking with so many of these clients, one sentiment in particular seems to be underpinning their motivation and drive today: “if not now, then when?” Benjamin Franklin himself echoed this sentiment. His mantra was: “don't put off until tomorrow what you can do today.” And that’s a sense I think many of us, after all we have been through, can now relate to.

So whether you are, as one new Owner recently described it — pulling out the “why not” card from your back pocket, or you are seizing upon some carpe diem momentum, if the joys and inspirations of yachts and yachting have now found you, or you have decided to bring years of indecision to an end, on behalf of each and every one of our 170+ specialists and staff around the world… I look forward to ensuring every single one of those 86,400 seconds you spend on board turns out to be the most memorable of your life.

Of course, it is not just in the purchase or charter of yachts where procrastination has little benefit in our lives. But if there is one way to truly make the most of those 86,400 seconds we all have at our disposal every single day, it is quality time with family and friends on board a yacht in the destination of your choice, with everything you could dream of laid out before you.

T

he last 18 months have seen a huge increase not only in sales, but in the motivations and objectives of Buyers.

“More and more clients are looking to buy a yacht not only for themselves, but with the goal of also creating a successful charter operation,” says Sales Broker Marco Fodale. “I would say in around 30% of our sales today, the Buyer will ask: which yachts are most attractive to Charterers, and why? For many clients, charter potential is a key element in any yacht selection I present to them.” WHY BUY A YACHT TO CHARTER OUT?

This surge comes as more Owners than ever are seeing the benefits of chartering out their yachts. One recent Buyer of a 40M (131’) yacht told us: “When I decided to buy a yacht, I knew from the outset I wanted to run it as a charter operation when my family and I couldn’t be on board. Keeping the crew busy and happy means I’ve had no crew churn for the last year and my crew is always fully ‘service-ready’ when I go on board. Plus, the yacht is kept in immaculate shape year-round!” Another Owner of a 26M (85’) sailing yacht said: “Running real estate businesses meant I approached buying a yacht, as I do everything, with the aim of optimising my financial wins. Chartering her out has not only given me a pretty reliable revenue stream, but I know that when I do choose to sell, a successful charter yacht kept in impeccable condition will get me the best price.” WHAT SUPPORT DO I NEED?

Securing an experienced Charter Manager is a vital early step in your process. A Charter Manager’s insight adds value to your operation long before your yacht becomes available for charter. By advising on the charter potential of the yachts your Sales Broker is showing you, they can help to ensure you make the best purchase decision to achieve your goals. As a guideline, on the following pages, we have highlighted just some of the factors your Charter Manager, working alongside your Sales Broker, will be able to advise you on in your search for a yacht that suits both your needs and current charter market demand.

YACHT PURCHASE

WHAT SHOULD I LOOK FOR IN MY NEW YACHT?

Decided to buy a charter yacht but unsure what to look for and where to start? Here, we break down the qualities the top-booking yachts possess that bring enquiries and ultimately get charter guests on board. 1. A SOLID CHARTER REPUTATION

“The simplest way to own a successful charter yacht? Buy a yacht with an existing charter record,” says Daniela De Marco, Head of Charter Management Europe. “Yachts with a good reputation among brokers and a raft of positive guest feedback are ready to gain an even better name on the charter market under new ownership.” However, as a Buyer you are in no way restricted to only successful charter yachts. Look for or implement the following assets, found on all the best charter yachts, and your yacht will be perfectly placed to secure quality and repeat charter guests. 6. THE INSIDER’S TOY CHEST 2. A CHARTER-READY, MULTI-TASKING CREW

Every Owner wants a top-class crew, but successful charter operations require specific crew skills. With the help of your crew recruitment company and Captain, source a crew with proven experience on busy charter yachts, ideally those who double up their skillsets. “Look for a stewardess who is also a trained masseuse/ beauty therapist and deckhands who are also expert watersports instructors and you will be offering guests added extras without the need to hire additional staff,” recommends Head of Charter Management USA Kellie Shoemaker. 3. THE HIGHEST NUMBER OF SUITES POSSIBLE

“While your family may only need three suites, maximising the number of berths available opens up your yacht to more potential charter parties,” explains De Marco. “Offering six suites is great, but having seven or even eight is even better, as long as they are all a decent size. For groups of friends, having an extra suite can help with accommodation arrangements — same if you have children who do not want to share.” 4. TOP CONDITION

It goes without saying that Charterers expect flawlessness throughout, from decks and interiors to features and furnishings. “When deciding between a yacht that I could refit to my exact preferences and one that was in fantastic condition, I knew that any works would significantly delay her entry to the charter market and my revenues,” says an Owner of a 52M (170’) yacht. “It was a tough one, but I chose the charter-ready option and have never looked back.” 5. A GREAT WATER-LEVEL SPACE

“Beach clubs are more popular than ever,” says De Marco. “Ideally, choose a yacht with a sizeable lower-deck space for socialising or wellbeing, with a sauna, massage space and perhaps a bar or a lounge with big screens. For smaller yachts, it’s important to ensure there is a spacious swim platform with a shower and room for a couple of chairs for cocktails.”

“We have a ‘hot list’ of toys that we always recommend new Owners load up with — it’s one of the easiest changes to make once you’ve taken ownership,” says Shoemaker. “Jet-skis, Seabobs, waverunners, water-skis, paddle boards, sailing dinghies and a great set of inflatables including a water slide and anti-jellyfish pool are a good start. If you have room, dive gear opens up the yacht for even more on-the-water activities.” Ready to buy the ultimate charter yacht, but prefer to have a trusted charter expert on your team, working alongside your Sales Broker to ensure your purchase is 100% optimised for charter? THE MOST REQUESTED CHARTER FACILITIES

Depending on your yacht’s size range, key onboard features can significantly boost her appeal. As this Owner of a 64M (210’) yacht found out, it’s a good idea to seek advice from both a Sales Broker and a Charter Manager. “I worked with both a Fraser Sales Broker and a Charter Manager, and they shared with me their two different perspectives on the yacht,” he says. “My Broker helped me make sure I got the right boat for me, but the Charter Manager was able to point out the features on board each of the yachts I was considering that are most attractive for Charterers.” The most popular features include:

— Hot tub and/or swimming pool — Wellbeing facilities: sauna, massage room, spa — Plentiful spaces for sunbathing and outdoor dining — Cinema (indoor and/or outdoor on deck) — Gaming and entertainment facilities
