2020: A new world THE BROKERAGE YACHT LANDSCAPE REMAINS A BUYER’S MARKET AS STOCK RISES AND SMALLER LOCALISED BOATS CONTINUE TO SELL.
W
hile the world is facing an uncertain future for the rest of 2020, the months before the crisis showed the potential to be a record year in the making for the yachting industry. Q1 of 2020 showed a 16% increase in sales from 2019 (a 21% increase on the 10-year average) and an increase of 41% in terms of Total Last Asking Price value, with a total market value of sales of €840m.1 To those in the industry, this was no surprise: average asking price value has increased consistently year on year since 2018. And while the world today looks very different to how it did at the start of the year, the yacht market has shown itself to be more resilient than others. “Since the 2008 Global Financial Crisis, the yacht market has been a buyer's market – and that is not expected to change in the near future,” says Fraser Sales Broker Antoine Larricq. While travel restrictions will be felt until the end of 2020, Larricq predicts
that Q3 & Q4 2020 will see a good number of transactions, adding that most buyers should be making an acquisition in Q4 2020 and Q1 of 2021 to be ready for Season 2021. At the same time, the COVID crisis has highlighted the benefits of yacht ownership in the present, and some buyers do not want to wait until Q4. “While these are uncertain times, people are certain that if they want to take a holiday safely, they can do it on a yacht, so there are definitely buyers looking and more Owners using their vessels,” says Fraser Sales Broker Josh Gulbranson. In fact, within a week in May/June 2020, Fraser sold 3,164 GT of yachts with a combined Last Asking Price of €95,800,000 to buyers who were able to enjoy them in time for summer. In general, however, more yachts are coming to market. The stock of new listings rose by 5% from the start of March to the start of
June, and while the panic-selling levels of 2008 are not expected to be revived, this has naturally necessitated price adjustments for some yachts, although not all. Travel restrictions have also impacted the type of yachts selling. “The much larger boats are on a slower path because they are more of a global piece of merchandise and logistically hard to reach,” explains Gulbranson. “So localised boats are selling, which is often in the smaller boat sector, sub $10m. There is also a lot of activity in the $500,000 to $3m range.” Brokers agree that the rest of the year will be key for setting out the landscape we can look ahead to, and currently predictions based on generalisations should be made with great caution. However, one trend remains unchanged: for new high-pedigree yachts, demand outstrips supply.

Spotlighting the New Build market
Prepare to launch WITH 2020 KICKING OFF WITH THE HIGHEST NUMBER OF PROJECTS IN BUILD SINCE 2011, THE NEW BUILD MARKET IS EVOLVING.
A
lthough the new build market has not returned to its pre-2008 heights, 2020 kicked off with the highest number of yachts since 2011 under construction: 510 vessels over 30m/100’.1 In late May, it was expected that over 200 of them will be delivered by the end of the year (77% of these motor yachts, and 23% sailing). This comes after a relatively quiet period in the new build sector, after the financial market saw a drop in summer 2018. “From the Monaco Yacht Show 2018 until June 2019 there were very few new build contracts signed, so that will reflect on the number of deliveries that we will have in 2022”, says Fraser Sales Broker Antoine Larricq. “After that, we saw a big catch up, with Amels, Benetti, Heesen, Sanlorenzo and other yards signing more orders.”
While the majority of new build projects are delivered to their Owners and removed from the market, there is a segment of 30m+ yachts built on speculation or placed back on the market, and at the time of going to press, 24% of the yachts launching in 2020 are for sale (81% of which are under 50m). 2 The most ground-breaking new build is 107.6M/353' Benetti LUMINOSITY, the largest and most revolutionary Benetti ever launched, represented for sale by Fraser’s Stuart Larsen and immediately available for a new Owner. In terms of trends, yachts with green credentials are in demand by Owners, as well as explorer yachts that can take them off the beaten track to remote areas. And this is not simply a preference — from 2021, all recreational vessels below 500GT need to comply with new International Maritime Organization (IMO) Tier III regulations to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions, as highlighted by Fraser Technical Superintendent Romain Guilbaud in an industry webinar. Designers, shipyard and engineers are using ever-more innovative ideas to push the boundaries of what is possible in yachting.

o continent in the world better fits the title ‘the land of plenty’ than North America. All in one destination, it has world-class national parks and vast mountain ranges, icy glaciers and sun-baked islands, wildlife from killer whales to reindeer, sparkling lakes and iconic historical towns. Today, for Owners and charterers based in the States, itineraries throughout the US are accessible by road or internal flight. And with so much space on the water, isolation from others is easily achieved. When it became clear in the early summer that international travel in 2020 would take on a very different identity, the Fraser charter department saw a surge in enquiries for US itineraries, as American clients began to rediscover the richness of their own land. “What charterers love about New England is that it offers lots to do in a relatively small area,” says Charter Broker Debra Blackburn. “On a seven-day charter, you can get from Newport to Maine, taking in the charms of Martha’s Vineyard, Providence and Nantucket on the way.” The lighthouse-dotted coastlines, daily spectacular sunsets and abundant freshoff-the-boat seafood can be enjoyed from the decks of a yacht, and those who choose to venture ashore can go cliff walking and mansion touring in Newport, wander for miles on the flats of Cape Cod’s beaches, see the historic National Seashore Coastline on the way to a day in Provincetown and hike or kayak with a fresh mountain breeze in Maine. This year, many charter yacht Owners are positioning their yachts in New England when normally they would be heading to the Caribbean.
For something wilder, 4,370 miles (7,032 km) west lie the wildlife-packed waters of Alaska. Known as ‘the last great frontier’ for its still uncharted, uncrowded nature, Alaska has around 6,640 miles (10,690 km) of coastline to explore – more than all the other states combined. Here, and in neighbouring British Columbia and the Pacific Northwest, a typical day on charter might include spotting bears hunt salmon from the bridge deck, a helicopter trip to a picnic on a glacier and a tender adventure watching humpback whales and orca play in the water. Days here are led by nature’s rhythms, and weeks pass without seeing another person. Staying north, the Great Lakes (Superior, Huron, Michigan, Ontario and Erie), make up the largest body of fresh water on Earth, spanning an area larger than Great Britain. They offer tens of thousands of islands and scenic anchorages, remote biking trails, quiet, pretty beaches, golf and countless coastal towns, from charming tiny beach resorts to the likes of Chicago and Toronto. always tell clients: Scandinavia is nothing like the Mediterranean,” says Fraser Charter Broker Tove Johnson, who grew up on the east coast of Sweden and has extensively travelled the region. “Scandinavia is about nature, tranquillity, relaxation and wildlife.” It is exactly this quality that makes the Baltics, including the Stockholm Archipelago and the Norwegian Fjords, such an alluring cruising ground for an increasing number of charterers. Today, as Europebased charter clients look for routes that take them off the beaten track away from crowds and other yachts, without necessitating a long-haul flight, this destination comes into its own. Most clients coming to this area opt for a cruise around the Norwegian Fjords, says Johnson. Taking in both the mainland and islands, Norway’s coastline stretches to 100,915km (62,706 miles), making it one of the longest in the world. Charter itineraries focus on either the north, where you can spot polar bears, eagles, whales and orcas from the decks of your yacht, or the west and south, where most of the fjords lie – here, a day on charter could take in a glacier hike, a helicopter flight to a wild island, a session of surfing or paddle boarding backdropped by rugged cliffs, or a day exploring a colourful fishing village. In summer, dine on fresh seafood under the midnight sun and in autumn, watch the Northern Lights come alive overhead. Equally enticing is the Stockholm Archipelago. Made up of 30,000 islands, skerries and rocks stretching 60 kilometres (37 miles) off Sweden’s east coast, starting just 20 minutes from Stockholm, it’s ideal to explore by private yacht, and you are unlikely to encounter other yachts very often. Johnson recommends an itinerary that includes Gotland, the favourite summer escape for Swedish society: a spacious, rural island of pretty beaches, farms and picturesque villages, its highlight is the medieval, UNESCO-protected walled town of Visby, a culinary hotspot for local produce (think saffron pancakes, fresh seafood, local garlic and truffle) and craft beer.

Alternatively, Sweden’s west coast boasts the St Tropez of Sweden, Båstad, where the stars flock every summer. Incorporate it into a 10-day itinerary beginning in Copenhagen and heading north up Sweden’s west coast, where you will find long sandy beaches which can be broken up, if desired, by a night in the vibrant city of Gothenburg.
