FOCUS ON FILM PRESENTS THE 20th GREEN MOUNTAIN FILM FESTIVAL Welcome to the 20th Annual Green Mountain Film Festival! We’re excited and proud to be celebrating this milestone. We’ve been working hard all year to ensure a great festival experience. From our film selections to our invited guests, there is something for everyone. This year we have 49 feature films and 31 short films, representing a total of 32 countries. We have films from Iran, Vanuatu, Chile, Turkey, Mali, and more. We are delighted to bring you the best films from around the world – no ban here: we support filmmakers from all countries and backgrounds. And to help us celebrate our 20th anniversary, we’re having a panel discussion with some of the festival founders, and we’ve brought back festival favorite Monsieur Lazhar! We honor all of the leaders who have shaped GMFF over the last 20 years. Deep thanks to Rick Winston, Andrea Serota, Donald Rae, Carlos Haase, Terry Youk, and many others for their heroic work creating and sustaining the Green Mountain Film Festival. We have a great team – you can find their names listed on page 21. We also express our gratitude to our donors, sponsors, volunteers, screeners, and filmmakers; we are deeply appreciative for the dedication of everyone involved.
And we want to thank you, our audience, because whether this is your first Green Mountain Film Festival or your 20th, we could not do this without you and your generous and enthusiastic support. Tickets can be purchased by phone, online, or in person. Online sales start on Sunday, March 5th, with in-person and phone sales starting on Monday, March 6th. Our ticket office this year is located at 38 State Street (2nd floor, above Salaam), courtesy of The Jacobs Family. We hope you’ll stop in to say hello, purchase tickets, and enjoy a nice (free) cup of coffee courtesy of Capitol Grounds. (Thanks Bob!) Ticket information is located on page 34. Film festivals connect communities, help us understand world issues, and open windows into new worlds and cultures. Programming the festival has been a challenge in this current political and cultural climate; how do we balance documentaries that highlight important and difficult subjects with lighter fare or dramas? The GMFF team has risen to the occasion. There are films that will inspire you to get involved, and films that will make you laugh, cry, and lose yourself in the stories being told. In times like these, we need the arts more than ever. Best, Rachelle Murphy & the GMFF Board of Directors

This black comedy begins with one simple conceit: God exists, and He’s a jerk. He takes sadistic delight in dreaming up new “laws” to torment humanity, and He’s a petty tyrant to his wife and ten-year-old daughter, Ea. Like her brother before her, Ea has had enough of her Father’s abuse, and when she spies the right opportunity she hacks into His computer and leaks to the entire world the only thing He has over them: their inevitable death date. After escaping her father, Ea gathers apostles and writes her own New Testament to try to fix the mess her Father has made of humanity. Her six apostles learn to celebrate life and love and try to provide us with an answer to the loaded question: what would you do if you knew exactly how much time you had left to live?

MY LIFE AS A ZUCCHINI Sunday 3/19 | 12:30 pm | S8 • Saturday 3/25 | 12:30 pm | S33 2016 Animated: Switzerland / France • Language: English Rating: PG-13 • Run Time: 70 Minutes Director: Claude Barras
Zucchini is an intriguing nickname for a nine-year-old boy, although his unique story is surprisingly universal. After his mother's sudden death, Zucchini is befriended by a police officer, Raymond, who accompanies him to his new foster home filled with other orphans his age. At first he struggles to find his place in this strange and at times hostile environment. Yet with Raymond's help and his newfound friends, Zucchini eventually learns to trust, finds true love and at last a new family of his own.
NAMOUR Saturday 3/18 | 6:00 pm | S6 • Wednesday 3/22 | 5:45 pm | D23 2016 Drama: USA • Language: Arabic & EnglishcRating: NR Run Time: 80 Minutes • Director: Heidi Saman
Steven Bassem is a young man going nowhere. His job as a valet driver for a fashionable restaurant brings him into regular contact with LA's moneyed elite and their expensive automobiles, but Steven can't shake the feeling that his temporary gig is somehow turning into his future. When Steven’s mother announces that she’s selling the house–the only home Steven has ever known–because they can no longer afford it, Steven’s behavior starts to change in strange ways. Q&A with Director Heidi Saman following 3/18 screening | Sponsored by: Vermont Humanities Council
NERUDA Monday 3/20 | 4:00 pm | S14 • Thursday 3/23 | 8:00 pm | S28 2016 Drama: Chile / Argentina / France / Spain / USA Language: Spanish & French w/ English subtitles Rating: R (sexuality/nudity and some language) Run Time: 107 Minutes • Director: Pablo Larraín
Pablo Larraín’s exciting, surprising, and colorful new film is not a biopic but, as the director himself puts it, a “Nerudean” portrait of the great Chilean poet Pablo Neruda’s years of flight and exile after his 1948 denunciation of his government’s leadership. Larraín’s heady blend of fact and fancy (the latter embodied in an invented character, straight out of detective fiction, played by Gael García Bernal) is many things at once: a loving, kaleidoscopic recreation of a particular historical moment; a comical cat-and-mouse game; and a pocket epic.

OBIT Sunday 3/19 | 6:15 pm | D11 • Thursday 3/23 | 4:15 pm | S26 2016 Documentary: USA • Language: English • Rating: NR Run Time: 93 Minutes • Director: Vanessa Gould
Hours before newspapers hit doorsteps, endless detail is gathered and impossible choices must be made. OBIT introduces us to the unseen writers responsible for crafting the unequaled obituaries of the New York Times. As we're taken through their painstaking process of digging through years of accomplishments, we learn about the particular pressures that accompany a career spent trying to elegantly and respectfully shape the story of a life. From notorious politicians and beloved musicians to unknown personalities who have advanced the worlds of science, literature, and sports, the obit writers are in the unique and often unenviable position of spotlighting individuals whose impact and influence is nearly impossible to measure.

As Eyal finishes the traditional Jewish week of mourning for his late son, his wife Vicky urges him to return to their routine —but just because the shiva has ended doesn’t mean it’s life as usual. Each coping in their own way, Eyal and Vicky both attempt to regain a sense of control over their future, as they struggle to discover that there are still things in life worth living for. Asaph Polonsky’s debut feature ONE WEEK AND A DAY provides a nuanced perspective on loss that is humorous, touching, and above all else, life affirming.

The film takes us from Padraig's isolated life in Cambridge, Massachusetts, to some of the most dangerous crisis zones on Earth–from Northern Ireland to Kosovo, Nigeria to Iraq, over five years–as he works a peacemaking model based on his recovery from addiction. We meet Padraig in the third act of his life in a race against time to find some kind of salvation for both the world and himself. POLITICAL ANIMALS Sunday 3/19 | 12:00 pm | P6 • Friday 3/24 | 4:15 pm | D30 2016 Documentary: USA • Language: English Rating: NR • Run Time: 87 Minutes Directors: Jonah Markowitz / Tracy Wares
POLITICAL ANIMALS tells the story of the gay rights movement through the eyes of four elected women, a group often left out of gay histories until now. Fierce, determined, focused, and passionate, these women had the courage and foresight to start the work of securing legal rights of the LGBT community, ultimately paving the way for other states across the nation. Bills they authored included the first domestic partnership registry enacted by a legislature, the first anti-bullying bill protecting gay students, and many more. This film shows how their legislation brought about change in laws and societal acceptance, the strategies behind this incremental change, and what tough bargains had to be made to get us to where we are today.

A QUIET PASSION Saturday 3/18 | 8:15 pm | S7 2016 Drama: Belgium / United Kingdom • Language: English Rating: PG-13 (for thematic elements, disturbing images & brief suggestive material) • Run Time: 125 Minutes Director: Terence Davies
Who was Emily Dickinson? What kind of a person lurked behind the poet who spent most of her life on her parents' estate in Amherst, Massachusetts? Born in 1803, Dickinson is considered to be a gifted child, but an emotional trauma forces her to give up her studies. The introverted young woman withdraws from society and writes poetry. In spite of her cloistered existence she takes her readers on a journey into the wider world. Director Terence Davies imagines her biography and explores how Emily Dickinson’s exceptional poems could come into being. Dickinson communicates with the outside world via letters. In her correspondence with her siblings and the clergyman Charles Wadsworth, she exchanges philosophical and everyday observations. Davies’ biopic also describes a talented woman’s lonely and desperate struggle for recognition in a world dominated by men.
THE REHEARSAL Monday 3/20 | 8:30 pm | S16 2016 Drama: New Zealand • Language: English • Rating: NR Run Time: 102 Minutes • Director: Alison MacLean
When Stanley auditions for drama school, he has a faint idea of what he's in for. He quickly makes friends with many in his class, although he is not prepared for the emotional rigor and pressure of his classes. Stanley has met a girl that he likes a lot, and his affection is not diminished by the news that reveals her family to be going through a scandal. But when his classmates suggest that their group project be a dramatization of that same scandal, he starts to feel a moral pinch.

Sitting in the shadows of the operatic performances, the cloakroom attendants wait for the final act. London, 1947: jazz lovers Seretse Khama and Ruth Williams meet at a Missionary Society dance. The evening is electric, perhaps in part because they both know their attraction is fraught. She's an accomplished office worker, and white. He is a charming law student, and black. What he can't tell her at first is that he's also a prince, first in line to the throne of Bechuanaland (today's Botswana). But despite the obstacles, it's love. When the time comes for Seretse to return home to lead his people's independence movement, he impulsively proposes to Ruth. She accepts, but no one else does — not her family nor his. Neither does South Africa's government, which controls uranium Britain badly needs, and stands on the eve of making apartheid a national policy. They won't tolerate an interracial couple leading a neighboring country, so Britain begins to work against what once seemed like the simple love between Seretse and Ruth.
