Helena Bonham Carter We’re dotty for this playful Dolce & Gabbana frock – the retro sunnies and red lippie give it that quirky edge Helena is known for.

Stacey kept things simple in a (very) LBD. The puff sleeves and square neckline are so on trend, plus we love the jewel detailing on the shoes.

Sparking joy in an illustrated Zimmermann maxi, the Fresh Meat star looked gorgeous in this arty number. Even better, she styled it with silver cowboy boots. A girl after our own hearts.

Billie Piper

Billie’s not afraid to take style risks, and this Moschino dress was one that really paid off. It’s ’80s in all the right ways – bold shoulders, taffeta, sequins and bows. We love it.

ellie Bright has shown off her burgeoning baby bump while out walking her dog in the Hertfordshire sunshine. Her EastEnders character Linda Carter is pregnant on screen, but seeing Kellie expecting in real life has come as a surprise to many. The 44-year-old 2015 Strictly Come Dancing finalist – who turns 45 on 1 July – conceived her “miracle” child with husband Paul Stocker with the help of IVF. Her first son Freddy, nine, was conceived naturally, while her second, four-year-old Gene, was also the result of fertility treatment – something she has been keen to encourage other women to consider.

She said, “I want to be open and honest about this, because I think it’s important for younger women to understand. It’s important for women to know that yes, you can have children in your forties, and yes, you can be lucky and do it naturally. But for a lot of us, it doesn’t work that way, so I wouldn’t suggest leaving it late by choice. It’s been a roller coaster.” This pregnancy came after two failed IVF treatments, and Kellie admitted she “almost fell to the floor in shock” when she found out she would be having a third child. “I was so shocked and thrilled,” she added. The little one is due in August. How lovely.

Words: Shereen Low. Photos: Shutterstock, Instagram (susannareid100)

Is Piers returning to GMB? S ince Piers Morgan left Good Morning Britain in a storm of controversy in March, the show has struggled to keep its audience. Despite his former sidekick Susanna Reid staying on, and attempts from ITV bosses to shake things up by trialling big names like Richard Madeley, ex-Labour spokesman Alastair Campbell and Susanna’s former BBC Breakfast co-star Bill Turnbull, the programme’s ratings have steadily declined as once-loyal viewers switched off in their droves. And telly experts reckon that only Piers can save the show – as well as Susanna’s co-anchor position. Earlier this month, the ITV breakfast programme plummeted to a new low, with only 450,000 people tuning in for the 2 June episode. One of the lowest figures in the show’s seven-year history, this is a huge contrast to the 1.9m viewers on 9 March, who saw Piers and Susanna react to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s interview with Oprah Winfrey, when the show overtook its BBC rival in the ratings war for the first time. Following this news, Piers – who decided to quit rather than apologise for his comments about Meghan – offered to return to his old seat. “Jeez, should I set my alarm for 4.45am again?” he said. His proposal came

Experts think only he can save the show – and Susanna

after he sensationally revealed that he had been approached by bosses about a potential return. “They reached out – there have been approaches to test the water in the wake of their obvious ratings issues. It’s their problem to work out, but never say never,” he said. “I have had some quite random third-party feelers put out to see if I would consider a return to the show.” The outspoken broadcaster, 56, confidently claimed he could “take the ratings back to where I left them” if he were back at the programme’s helm. Fans were thrilled with these reports. One told him, “I wish you’d come back and save the show,” with another adding, “Piers should return. He and Susanna are GMB.” But Piers – who joined the

He added, “The rule, the show was addictively doubt is, would anyone be allowed chaotic and the nation loved to do it that way again? I was him for it. Susanna and Piers hired to give very strong, honestly were TV gold – they were the held opinions, which I did. But in perfect on-screen duo. He can the end, I was asked to apologise for a genuinely held opinion.” A further problem could be the newly launched GB News. At the time of going to press, Piers is also in talks to join the channel, which could cause another headache for ITV. PR expert Christian Guiltenane tells us, “GMB absolutely needs Piers to return. Love him or hate him, he was the glue that held GMB together. He revolutionised breakfast TV, giving ITV its strongest ratings in years by being a confrontational Brave face: outspoken mega-gob. save the show, and Susanna, from these other pretenders who want to take his place.” Gemma Graham, The Sun TV Mag’s associate TV editor, adds, “The theatrics and soap-boxy Piers moments are something GMB has been missing somewhat over recent months. There’s nobody who generates headlines and huge viewing figures quite like Piers. I’m sure Susanna has enjoyed being able to get a word in edgeways since Piers departed, but the pair have remained good friends and always loved working together, so a reunion would probably be quite pleasing for her. And I’m sure that Piers would revel in the fact he’d bring viewers back in their droves.” The loss in viewers has left Susanna feeling “uncertain” for her own GMB future. “She has been very concerned about the

fall in ratings since Piers was axed, and bosses fear that, unless they can recover, she will start considering her options next year,” an insider said. “It’s no coincidence that, following that conversation, Piers was approached.” There have been reports that Sus, 50, could be joined by another female co-host if Piers decides not to return. His permanent replacement is believed to be revealed in September. “It is very possible that we will have two women fronting the show,” a GMB source said. “Susanna will take the lead, but the job of her co-host is up for grabs, and it will come down to who is most popular with viewers. There is no rush to find a replacement for Piers this year, as the bosses want to make the right choice. They want to give lots of people a chance and, as time goes on, focus more on the most popular hosts.”

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle welcomed their second child on 4 June, naming their first daughter Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor. Born in Santa Barbara, California, and weighing 7lbs 11oz, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex revealed the happy news on their Archewell website, saying, “She is more than we could have ever imagined, and we remain grateful for the love and the prayers we’ve felt from across the globe. Thank you for your continued kindness and support during this very special time for our family.” Lilibet – who will be known as Lili – is the Queen’s 11th greatgrandchild, and the name has special meaning, as it is the monarch’s lifelong nickname and what she used to call herself as a child when she was unable to pronounce the full Elizabeth. Not everyone thinks the name is a thoughtful move, though. Piers Morgan – who has made it clear he’s not a fan of Harry and Meghan – said, “It’s quite ironic, isn’t it? You have this couple who have been trashing the royal family and the monarchy for the last few weeks, and they have named the baby after the Queen.” Some members of the public were equally furious, as one person said, “I can

well believe that Harry and Meghan think this is a tribute to the Queen. They are completely insensitive and oblivious to other people’s feelings, and the crassness of this so-called ‘tribute’.” Another added, “Why not just call the baby Lili? That’s a pretty name and would have been her own. Using the Queen’s pet name might be acceptable under different circumstances, but not after they have trashed the royal family.” At the time of going to print, whether or not Harry had asked for the Queen’s permission to use the name was unclear. However, Piers also suggested this homage could end the rift between the royal family. He said, “Maybe it’s their way of reaching out, as the Americans say, to the royals and wanting some kind of end to this on-running feud.” Now, the Queen is thought to have offered her grandson an olive branch by inviting Harry to lunch when he flies over from California next month, as he still plans to attend the unveiling of the Princess Diana statue in Kensington Palace. A courtier says, “It’s a typically magnanimous gesture by Her Majesty. The lunch will be a chance for them to talk things through.”

How things have changed since he came out last year

Inside Schofe’s new SINGLE LIFE

Words: Amy Lo. Photos: Instagram, Backgrid, Shutterstock

I

t’s been over a year since Phillip Schofield bravely came out as gay live on This Morning after sharing an emotional statement on Instagram. He said, “With the strength and support of my wife and my daughters, I have been coming to terms with the fact that I am gay. This is something that has caused many heartbreaking conversations at home. I have been married to Steph for nearly 27 years, and we have two beautiful grown-up daughters, Molly and Ruby.” In October, Phil, 59, said he and wife Steph, 57, remained married and hadn’t discussed divorce. “We are picking our way through and however that works, and it’s a work in progress,” he said. However, in recent months, the pair have seemingly taken steps to carve separate lives away from one another. Recently, Phil was seen out for a boozy lunch with his ITV pals Rochelle Humes, 32, Christine and Frank Lampard, both 42, and his This Morning co-host Holly Willoughby, 40, and her husband Dan Baldwin, 46. And while Steph would usually be in attendance at these lunches, she was nowhere to be seen on this occasion. Steph also used to appear on Phil’s Instagram page regularly – even after he came out – in selfies and family photos, but he hasn’t posted a photo on his

Instagram page with her and their kids since September. While we’re sure they’re still as close as ever, this may suggest that they are adjusting to their new lives. Last autumn, Phil reportedly splashed out £2million on a large semidetached pad in Chiswick, London, close to showbiz star Dec Donnelly and only a few miles from Holly. That same month, it was claimed he was also converting the garage of their family home in Oxfordshire into a bachelor pad, so he could split his time between the two properties. But having his own place near his celeb pals in London is certainly handy, as Phil is often out and about socialising in the city, recently enjoying lunch with former fellow Broom Cupboard presenter and This Morning colleague Andi Peters, 50. His friendship with Holly has also gone from strength to strength, as they have leaned on each other throughout the difficult last year. In a recent interview, he said, “I think how lucky I am to have been able to have worked through all of this and to have had the therapy that Holly has given me all the way through.” Neighbours also welcomed him to the area, with one saying, “A lot of people have been talking about

Holly has continued to be a rock throughout the last year it, but nobody bothers him. He’s a lovely bloke. I’m sure he’ll enjoy living in our community.” Another added, “It’s caused quite a stir since he’s moved in and got people very excited. He seems like a very nice man and quite normal. You see him walking or cycling mainly, and he smiles every time he goes past.” As well as a busy social life, Phil is leading a more active lifestyle, with cycling being one of his new hobbies. He often shares photos of his bike rides, and that’s just one of the things he’s been doing since upping his fitness. During the third national lockdown, he shared a photo of his bulging biceps, saying, “Well, if there’s an upside to lockdown three. My training has given me tiny guns.” While Phil looks like he’s

Enjoying chocolate and gin at Easter

Catching up with pal Andi Peters enjoying single life, he remains a doting dad to daughters Molly, 28, and Ruby, 25. Last year, he said, “My girls have been astonishing in their love, hugs and encouraging words of comfort.” After he came out, the whole family still went on a holiday together to Paris, and they continue to thrive, with Molly working for her dad as an assistant talent manager at management company YMU. He said, “I don’t post anything without [my daughters’] say-so. I check with them, ‘Is this OK?’ But they’re fine with it. My eldest daughter is my manager, so she’s well across it all.” Whereas Ruby has been trying her hand at various roles since studying psychology at Leeds Beckett University. She interned at ITV, has been doing some charity work for The Chiltern Centre, and

trekking Machu Picchu for Teenage Cancer Trust. Both girls have longterm boyfriends, who Phil also seems to be close to, as they all spent lockdown together last year. There’s been lots of speculation on whether Phil’s looking for love, as he previously hinted at a potential date, saying, “I am about to be taken out to lunch for the first time since March.” Graham Norton even said, “I imagine Pip has some secret boyfriend squirrelled away somewhere. I’m sure he has.” But it seems he won’t be making any announcements anytime soon, as a source told The Sun, “Phillip is in no hurry to meet someone new, but obviously the word has now been mooted, albeit in very loose and casual terms.” Who knows what the future will hold for Phil, but we’re delighted he’s so happy.

‘It’s about communication’

Mark Wright’s six-pack might be the epitome of sexiness for some, but we can’t ignore the fact that curvy stomachs, thick thighs and big bums can get us hot under the collar, too. My body confidence doesn’t come from stepping on the scales or losing an inch around my waist. And personally, I wouldn’t want to be intimate with someone who thought we couldn’t rattle a few headboards just because I’m not a size 10. And it’s important to remember that you can be fit and slim, and still not feel like a sex goddess. Even though you’ve got the energy and stamina to tick off every position in the Kama Sutra, you could still be painfully shy and have body hang-ups, just like the rest of us. Besides, I’d rather have

a sensational one minute of passion, rather than six hours of trying to get into different awkward and uncomfortable positions. And we know you don’t need to be able to do 50 press-ups in order to orgasm, otherwise that would rule out all the older folk who still enjoy a great sex life. Good sex isn’t about how fast or flexible your body is, it’s about communication and intimacy. ● Follow Cara on Instagram @rainybayblog

‘I went to bed a new wife – and woke up a WIDOW’ Nearly two years after the brutal killing of her police officer husband Andrew, Lissie Harper, 30, wants to make a difference

A

month after my 16th birthday, I got together with Andrew. We’d been friends at school for two years, and at 6ft 5in, Andrew was shy, but also funny, kind and protective. He was always writing me sweet, silly notes and offering me his coat if I was cold. When we were both 18, Andrew moved in with my family, and a year later, he joined the police force. Andrew had wanted to be a policeman for as long as I’d known him, and he loved it. In 2013, we took a break from our jobs to go travelling, visiting 14 countries including Sri Lanka, Bali and South Africa over seven months. It was an amazing adventure, and 18 months later, we bought a beautiful onebedroom cottage on the bank of the River Thames in South Oxfordshire. Then, in 2017, on a trip to Italy, Andrew got down on one knee. “We’ve been together since we

were 16 and I can’t imagine my life without you. Will you marry me?” he said. “Yes!” I replied, and we both laughed and had a little cry. Our wedding day in July 2019 was absolutely perfect, and two days later, we went on a minimoon to Cornwall and were looking forward to our proper honeymoon in the Maldives the following month. After that, we planned to move to a bigger house and start trying for a family. Then one morning in August, four weeks after the wedding, I was asleep when Andrew, 28, left for work at 6am. We texted each other a few times during the day, and he told

me he’d decided to work late. That was typical of Andrew, who was constable for the roads policing unit of Thames Valley Police. That evening, at around 10pm, we spoke on the phone, and I said I was going to bed and would see him in the morning. “I love you,” we both said before we hung up. At around 3am, I was woken up by a knock on the door. Looking outside my window, I could see a police officer. I thought Andrew had brought a colleague back and maybe forgotten his keys, but when I opened the door, Andrew wasn’t there. “There’s been a road traffic collision,” the officer said, after I invited him in. “Is Andrew OK?” I asked. “Andrew has died,” he said. Immediately, I started to hyperventilate. Fearing I was going to be sick, I ran upstairs to the bathroom and sobbed and screamed into a towel. Back downstairs, the officer tried to comfort me and called my parents. As we waited for them to arrive, he explained that they had taken suspects into custody. In my state of deep shock, I’d

Someone had taken Andrew’s life? I was in so much shock and distress, my mind was in a fog. Over the next day or two, my family tried to protect me from newspaper reports, but eventually I needed to know. I found out that at about 11pm on 15 August, Andrew and a colleague attended a suspected quad bike theft by a group of young men. As Andrew tried to apprehend one of the thieves, he accidentally stepped with both feet into the loop of a tow rope attached to their car. Lassoed as they sped off, Andrew was dragged at highspeed for over a mile along country lanes, before eventually coming loose. His colleague, who chased after the vehicle, spotted his stab vest and belongings before finding Andrew lying dead in the road. He’d suffered catastrophic injuries, and now three men were in custody charged with his murder. Andrew’s body had been so badly damaged, I was told that I couldn’t see him, which made it even harder for me

to accept that he’d gone. I went to sit with his coffin at the chapel of rest, and told him that I loved him and that we’d be together again one day. I found it too hard to be alone in our home, so I went to stay at my parents. I couldn’t eat, sleep or think about anything else. That October, we held his funeral, and hundreds of uniformed officers lined the route to Christ Church Cathedral in Oxford. Somehow, I found the strength to stand up and read out his eulogy. “You used

to tell me we were a team and that we would get through all of life’s hurdles together, how I wish you were here with me now,” I said in front of the congregation. “The hardest challenge of all is losing you.” After the funeral, with Andrew’s family, we had faith in the judicial system that his killers would be brought to justice. Only, I ended up feeling severely let down. In July 2020, after a four-week trial at the Old Bailey, three teenagers from a local traveller’s camp – Henry

delivered. Nothing was going to bring Andrew back, but to be left with this sickening feeling of injustice was hard to cope with. I couldn’t accept it – I still don’t. That’s why I started campaigning for Harper’s Law, which would mean automatic life sentences for anyone who kills a police officer or other on-duty emergency services worker while committing a crime. More than ever in the past year, there’s been such appreciation and celebration of front-line workers like Andrew. The very least we can do is offer them this kind of protection. I want to make a change and create something positive from Andrew’s death. He literally put his life on the line to protect others and made the ultimate sacrifice, and I don’t want another family to feel the way I do. It’s been almost two years since Andrew’s death, and I’ll never stop grieving for him. I moved back into our cottage last May and I’ve found that alongside the sadness of missing Andrew is a deep feeling of comfort, because it’s where I feel closest to him. Our wedding photos are hung all around the house, but I still can’t bring myself to watch our wedding video. Along with support from family and friends, I’ve found solace in friendship with other widows, after meeting through the charity WAY (Widowed And Young). There are certain things you Long, 19, The couple just can’t Albert went travelling understand Bowers, 18, together for over unless you and Jessie seven months have lived this Cole, 18 – experience, and that were cleared solidarity and empathy of murder, but has really helped. real life

The incredible shrinking nurse Juggling work as a theatre nurse with being a mum meant Rebecca Boyd, 31, neglected her own health. But she turned things around and is now fighting fit

S

ince my teens, I’d always been a comfortable size 12-14 and felt fine with myself. But then, in July 2016, my weight struggles began after I returned to work as a theatre nurse from maternity leave. With my husband Scott, 39, away training in the army and only coming home occasionally, I was juggling four days of work a week and looking after our children, Sophia, then three, and Brody, eight months. It was really

overwhelming and lonely at times, and I found myself reaching for more convenience food because it was quick and easy. I’d always start the day with a bowl of cereal or toast, and at work, I’d pick at biscuits and cakes from the staff room on my break, then have chips and gravy from the canteen for lunch. In the evenings, after bath and bedtime with the kids, all I had the energy for was ordering a takeaway kebab or pizza. Over the next year, I went

up to a size 16-18, and I was gutted when I had to swap my medium theatre scrubs for large ones. My confidence was at an all-time low. I didn’t want to socialise with friends, and I was sad that I couldn’t run around with my kids without getting out of breath. I knew it was down to me to change my lifestyle habits. A couple of the mums at the kids’ nursery were on WW and raved about it. Although I didn’t have time to attend my local workshop in Chepstow, the WW online membership looked great. At the end of May, I signed up online and entered my weight of 13st 13lbs. My goal was to get down to 11st, healthy for my 5ft 10in height, and I knew the key to success was sustenance. I didn’t want to go hungry – and to my delight, I didn’t have to. For breakfast, I swapped my usual cereal for porridge, which kept me full for hours, and midmorning, I’d have a protein shake and banana, which would sustain me until the afternoon when I’d be out of theatre. Rather than have chips and gravy from the hospital canteen, I started bringing my own sandwiches or salads, and if I felt peckish later,

I’d have a cereal bar. In the evenings, I’d pull out leftovers from the freezer that I’d batch-cooked on weekends. WW had reignited my passion for cooking, and I loved making healthy fish pies or lasagnes. Every week, I recorded a steady loss, and by August, I’d lost over a stone. I’d never been into fitness that much, but feeling a burst of motivation, I downloaded the Couch to 5K running app and dug out the trainers Scott had bought me two years before, but I had only worn once! By now, he was back home for the summer, so I was able to get up at 5.30am and go for a run before work. To begin with, I alternated jogging and walking, but within a couple of months, I was running straight 5Ks. It was a great way to start my day and left me feeling so much more positive and energised. By December that year, I’d reached my goal weight of 11st, but I felt I could go a bit further, and in June 2019 – a year after joining WW – I reached a new target of 10st 7lbs. For the first time in my life, I was wearing size 10 jeans, and it felt amazing when I realised my medium scrubs were too loose and I had to get small! But more importantly, I was mentally and physically strong. By now, Scott had been deployed to Afghanistan for six months, but he’d bought me a treadmill, so I could still run with the kids at home. I had finally found a routine that worked for me, and I was able to maintain my goal weight by tracking my points on WW. Then, in March 2020, the pandemic hit and the theatre

Trying on her old uniform staff at work were transferred to the intensive care unit, where there was a huge influx of COVID cases. It was terribly stressful. Thankfully, Scott was home and could look after the kids while I worked 12-hour shifts. But working more nights and being under such stress meant my healthy eating took a nose-dive and I put a stone back on. I didn’t beat myself up about it, though, and after two months, when the ITU situation was calmer, I started tracking my WW points again and building up my running routine. Within a month, I was back to my target weight, and I’m thrilled to have maintained it ever since. I love running and try to get out at least three times a week with my dog Shadow. I still enjoy my treats, and our family has takeaway Fridays every week. My general attitude is better than ever, and I’m so pleased to be a healthy role model for Brody, now five, and Sophia, eight, who often comes running with me. I feel more confident in my clothes, and I even wear cropped T-shirts, which is something I would never have dreamed of doing. I’ve gone from large scrubs to small, and every time I put them on, I just feel so proud of myself. ● To start your weight loss and wellness journey, visit Ww.com

! o g o t Glow All you need to know about home tanning Get prepped The key to creating a flawless fake tan is to prep your skin properly first. The day before, exfoliate all over. Use a body brush or sugar scrub to buff away any dry skin to create a smooth base. The same applies for hair removal – if you want to defuzz, do it the night before, otherwise your tan can look patchy. Another way to avoid uneven application is to moisturise any dry areas – dot and blend a little hydrating lotion on knees and elbows at least an hour before your start tanning. Palmers Coconut Oil Coconut Sugar Body Scrub £5.99 St Tropez Tan Enhancing Moisturiser £10

Gradual tanners A glowing orange colour or tell-tale streaks can be a worry, especially if you’ve had a bad experience with fake tan in the past. Opting for a gradual tint is your best bet as the hydrating cream softens and nourishes skin like your everyday body lotion, while building up a very gentle sun-kissed colour over a few days. Slather on once a day to let the tan subtly build up to your desired shade, and it’ll stick around for up to a week while keeping skin baby-soft. Skinny Tan Gradual Tanner £14.99 Isle Of Paradise Self Tanning Butter £16.95

Instant colour For a quick fix, opt for a product that swipes on a visible glow straightaway. Whether you’re using a mousse, cream or spray, it’s important to buff into skin in a circular motion for a seamless finish – and don’t rush, as this always leads to missed bits. Many tans develop over a few hours for a deeper hue, too, so you’ll look like you’ve just got back from an exotic getaway by the end of the day. Garnier Self Tan Mousse £14 Vita Liberata Heavenly Elixir £34

Face up Applying tanning products to your face may seem daunting, but modern facial products are just like your usual skincare, with the added benefit of colour, so they are very easy to work into your routine and won’t clog up your pores. A light serum is a great option – just massage a few drops into clean skin first thing for a healthy-looking sheen that will last. An equally easy alternative is an overnight mask, which will develop while you snooze to bring some sunshine to your skin ready for the morning. Bondi Sands Pure Self Tanning Sleep Mask £14.99 Scientia Sunshine & Sea Tanning Serum £21

Colour removal If you don’t remove your colour thoroughly, over time, you’ll end up with product build-up and a very uneven finish when reapplying in future. You don’t need to spend ages scrubbing it all off – thankfully there are plenty of products designed to break down your tan and rinse it away. Simply rub over your arms and legs, leave for a few minutes, then jump in the shower. You’ll be squeaky clean and ready to do it all over again! 3 When you are ready to cook, light the barbecue and set up the fire for direct cooking (see right). Thread the marinated chicken strips onto 4-6 metal skewers, wrapping and piercing them several times so they’re secure. 4 When the barbecue is hot, clean the grill bars using a wire brush to minimise sticking. Lay the skewers on the grill over the fire and cook for 10-12 mins with the lid down, turning a couple of times, until cooked through (74°C when tested with a digital thermometer). 5 To serve, scatter the tomatoes and onion over 4 plates and season with salt and pepper. Top each with a skewer, then squeeze over the lemon juice and sprinkle on the chopped coriander. Serve with naan bread, warmed on the grill for 2-3 mins, and the mango chutney.

Direct vs indirect cooking

For indirect cooking, put lit charcoal on one half of the barbecue and leave the other half empty. This allows you to cook on two zones – directly (over the fire) and indirectly (off the fire), and in between for moderate heat. Control the temperature by moving food closer to or further away from the heat source. For recipes that call for direct cooking, simply put the lit charcoal in the centre of the barbecue.

Loaded steak nachos 3tbsp olive oil 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped 2tsp cumin seeds 400g can of black beans, drained and rinsed 4 spring onions, chopped A small bunch of coriander, chopped Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper 200g salted tortilla chips 250g grated cheese (use a mix of Cheddar and mozzarella) 2-4tbsp pickled jalapeños, to taste 400g steak (skirt, bavette or minute steaks are all good) 1-2tsp chipotle chilli flakes, to taste TO SERVE Guacamole and soured cream 1 Fire up the barbecue ready for direct and indirect cooking (see p34). Pour 1½tbsp olive oil into a large fireproof (no plastic or wooden handles) frying pan. Add the garlic and cumin seeds and set directly over the fire, stirring and frying for 2-3 mins, then add the beans. Cook for 5-10 mins, mashing the beans gently with

the back of a wooden spoon. 2 Transfer the beans to a bowl and stir in the spring onions and most of the coriander, seasoning with salt and pepper. 3 Add one third of the tortilla chips to the pan, followed by a few spoonfuls of the bean mixture, a handful of cheese and one third of the jalapeños. Repeat with the rest of the tortilla chips, beans, cheese and jalapeños, building up another 2 layers. Set the pan onto the grill bars, away from the fire, for around 10 mins, with the lid lowered, so the cheese gently melts. 4 Drizzle the remaining oil over both sides of the steaks and season with a good sprinkle of salt and the chipotle flakes. Cook the steaks directly over the fire, searing them hot and fast, for 1-2 mins on each side. Transfer to a plate, cover loosely with foil and leave to rest for 5 mins. 5 Slice the steaks and pile on top of the nachos in the pan. If the cheese needs more melting, slide the pan over the direct heat for a final 2-3 mins and lower the lid. Scatter over the remaining coriander and serve with guacamole and soured cream on the side.

Grilled corn with 3 butters Grilled corn is a winner, and adding one of these butters will elevate it to the next level. They freeze well, so make extra and save some for another day. Serves 4 Ready in 40 mins, plus soaking and freezing 4 large corn on the cob (ideally in their husks) 100g butter, softened Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper FOR THE GARLIC BUTTER 1 garlic clove, crushed 2tbsp chopped mixed fresh herbs (such as chives, parsley, basil, tarragon) FOR THE HARISSA BUTTER 1tbsp harissa 1tbsp chopped coriander FOR THE PARMESAN BUTTER 10g freshly grated Parmesan (or vegetarian grating cheese) 1tbsp capers, chopped These recipes are taken

from Foolproof BBQ by Genevieve Taylor (Quadrille, £12.99 )

1 If the corn is still in its husks, put them in a sink filled with

cold water, soak for 30 mins, then drain. Dampening the husks will create steam as they cook. If the corn is out of its husks, run each one briefly under the cold tap, then wrap individually in 2 layers of foil. 2 Put the softened butter in a small bowl. Use a fork to mash through the flavourings (for either garlic butter, harissa butter, or Parmesan butter), then season well with salt and pepper. Scoop onto a sheet of baking paper and roll up into a neat log, twisting the ends in opposite directions to tighten the roll. Put in the freezer for 20-30 mins to firm up. 3 Fire up the barbecue ready for direct grilling (see p34). Put the corn, either in its husks or in foil wrappers, directly over the fire, lower the lid and grill for 15-20 mins, using tongs to turn from time to time. For the corn in their husks, the husks will be blackened and charred when it’s ready. For the foil-wrapped corn, you will need to unwrap one to test if it’s tender. Serve the corn hot, with slices of the butter to melt over as you eat.

Overcome INCONTINENCE You can live your life without those little leaks

A

ccording to a recent survey, 70 per cent of women aged 35 to 65 have experienced urinary incontinence. It’s incredibly common, but the knockon effects can include stress, fear and anxiety – especially around being in public – a reduction in intimacy with partners, and reduced quality of sleep. Women have long been too embarrassed to speak out or seek help, but there’s support out there and a whole range of solutions, too.

What is it? “Urinary incontinence is defined as the involuntary leakage of urine from the bladder,” explains Dr Zoe Williams. “There are

36 Bella

several types, and the most common are ‘stress incontinence’ and ‘urge incontinence’. “Stress incontinence is when you leak a small amount of urine when you cough or sneeze, laugh or exercise, for example. Urge incontinence is different and occurs when the detrusor muscles in the bladder are overactive and start to contract (to make you pee) before your brain has instructed them to do so. In this situation, women will often feel a sudden urge to go to the toilet without any prior warning and the bladder may contract when it shouldn’t, causing urine leaks.” “Stress incontinence is closely linked to the health and strength of your pelvic floor muscles,” continues Dr Williams. “It can

affect women at any age, but is most common in women over the age of 30 and tends to get more likely as we get older – with contributing factors including pregnancy, having had vaginal births, obesity and menopause.” “The pelvic floor muscles lie across the base of your pelvis, to help keep the pelvic organs – bladder, uterus and bowel – in the correct position,” explains Dr Shirin Lakhani, cosmetic doctor and intimate health specialist (Cranleyclinic.com). “The onset of menopause can cause your pelvic floor muscles to weaken. These muscles support the pelvic organs, which means that a weakening of them can result in pelvic floor problems, such as prolapse and incontinence.”

“Many hormones affect muscle tone,” adds Claire SnowdonDarling, alternative health expert, presenter and educator (Clairesnowdon-darling.com). “However, for the pelvic floor, the most notable are oestrogen and progesterone. When the levels of these hormones drop, the ligaments that hold the bowel, uterus and bladder in place become thinner, weaker and less resilient. These hormones can drop at various times in our lives, such as post-pregnancy and menopause, but also due to high levels of stress – as stress interferes with our bodies’ ability to make these hormones effectively.” Our pelvic floor can be damaged in other ways, too. “Constipation

Knock-on effects Whatever the causes, the condition can have detrimental effects on women’s mental health, personal relationships and careers. “Incontinence hugely affects women’s emotional health,” explains Claire. “It can lead to anxiety about being away from home, and a fear of travelling, which can lead to social isolation, dependency on others and a very negative body image. All of these issues can cause depression and other mental health issues if incontinence isn’t managed effectively.” “In a recent customer survey, we found that 87 per cent of women said dealing with pelvic health issues had affected their mental health at some stage,” says Wendy Powell, founder of the Mutu system, an exercise and wellbeing programme for women (see right). “Women living with urinary incontinence have been shown to have a

When to seek out help “We’ve probably all experienced ‘wetting ourselves’ on the odd occasion while laughing uncontrollably or being tickled, for example,” says Dr Williams. “And while the odd occasion is normal, persistently having urine leakage, no matter how small the amount, is not normal. What’s more, there are many potential solutions that can help us improve, and often eradicate, incontinence, so I would urge people to seek advice from their GP. If people want self-help measures for stress incontinence, then I’d advise starting a regime of daily pelvic floor strengthening exercises.” Meanwhile, to protect against any embarrassing leaks, Dr Williams recommends Tena Silhouette Washable Absorbent Hipster Underwear, £29.99 (Tenadirect.co.uk). “For the odd occasional leakage, Tena’s Silhouette Washable Absorbent Underwear provides triple protection for light incontinence and looks just like regular underwear,” she says. Alternatively, Always Discreet Boutique Incontinence Pants, £8.49 for eight pairs (Boots), are a good disposable option.

EASY EVERYDAY EXERCISES Wendy Powell shares her Mutu System starter tips STEP 1 Lie comfortably on your back or side with your knees bent. Inhale and let your stomach muscles and pelvic floor relax. Let it all go and enjoy a state of complete relaxation. This part is really important – your muscles can’t work properly if they’re ‘switched on’ all the time. The relaxation phase is just as important as the engagement, so avoid squeezing muscles repeatedly and instead give space to both phases.

STEP 2 Next, exhale as you lift and gently squeeze your pelvic floor. To find the right muscles, imagine you’re trying not to pass wind by engaging the back passage muscles. Imagine that your vagina is a straw and you’re sucking up a smoothie through it. As strange as this may sound, it’s a very effective method! Refrain from being too forceful and instead maintain this as a gentle squeeze and lift.

STEP 3 Then breathe in and fully relax and release those muscles, being careful not to push down or away. Again,

this isn’t a forceful movement, just fully release and let go.

STEP 4 Repeat five times, in time with your own breath, always relaxing and releasing on the inhale, drawing upwards and gently squeezing on the exhale. Do these five breaths at least a couple of times a day, every day. In doing so, 92 per cent of our customers who had experienced urinary incontinence saw improvement. Gently squeezing on a small ball between the knees as you exhale and engage increases the contraction and makes your pelvic floor muscles work harder.

STEP 5 You can now engage and release your pelvic floor properly, so the next step is to apply your new skill to everyday life. Whenever you pick up a heavy load, prepare, inhale and release first, then engage and exhale as you lift, to protect your pelvic floor and core. Mutu System is a digital 12-module core and pelvic floor programme. Membership costs £99 for 12 months of access, including personal support in Mutu Connect. Go to Mutusystem.co.uk.

and straining put pressure on the pelvic floor and can cause it to weaken, as can being overweight,” explains Dr Lakhani. “Highimpact exercise can also put pressure on the pelvic floor.” Finally, diet and lifestyle choices can contribute, too. “Blood sugar instability can cause the body to create too much stress hormone, which in turn can increase our need to urinate and eventually develop incontinence,” adds Claire.

significantly lower quality of life compared with those who are continent. This impacts every element of a woman’s life, including their career. Forty one per cent of women said they have taken time off work for health issues that they did not feel comfortable discussing with their boss; 30 per cent said pelvic health affected their performance or focus at work; and 36 per cent felt anxious and embarrassed in the workplace due to pelvic health issues. “Sufferers can experience humiliation, fear and anxiety over becoming incontinent in public, and distress at others finding out. It can also cause loss of sleep and sexual dysfunction. The stigma attached makes 75 per cent of women with incontinence suffer in silence, while those that do seek help take, on average, six to ten years to do so.”

‘One man – and 8 children – showed me true love’ When Katherine De Kretser, 41, went to volunteer in Sri Lanka, she had no idea it would change the course of her life forever

Words: Elaine Hayward, Kim Willis. Photos: Phoenix Features

A

t the age of 28, I was enjoying my life in London. I had a good job in recruitment, and a large circle of friends and family around me. But I craved adventure and wanted to experience a completely different culture. As I tried to figure what to do and where to go, my dad Peter made a suggestion. He was born in Sri Lanka, and although he hadn’t back in years, he told me about an orphanage built near the beach called Prithipura. It sounded like a special place, and as I read up about it online, I learnt that it was set up in 1964 by a man called Bryan De Kretser. After he’d heard there were children abandoned at the local hospital because of their disabilities, he bought a hut and some land and took on three children. Eventually, Brian found love with one of his employees, Thillaka, and they went on to marry and have three sons. Since then, the charity had expanded to four different locations across Sri Lanka caring for over 240 children and adults. Although I had no experience of working with people with disabilities, I really wanted

42 Bella

to contribute, so I signed up to volunteer there for six months. In January 2008, I quit my job, put my belongings into storage and waved my family and friends goodbye. I couldn’t wait to start my new adventure, and when I arrived at Colombo airport in Sri Lanka, one of Bryan’s sons who worked at the orphanage kindly came to pick me up. His name was Pieter, 53, Although he was late, he was lovely and greeted me with a warm smile. “Welcome to Sri Lanka,” he said. Immediately, I felt at ease, and when we arrived the orphanage, he showed me around and introduced me to the other workers and volunteers. The place had beautiful surroundings and a

welcoming atmosphere, so I could see why they’d named it Prithipura, which means Happy Village. I was amazed to see how everything operated smoothly on a tiny budget. Pieter’s family had achieved so much with so little. My role was to look after babies and young children who had severe disabilities, such as six-month-old Dinushi. She had no functional use of her arms and legs, but she was so bright and determined, I adored her. I had to adapt to a new culture and language, and there were so many people with so many

different disabilities, it was overwhelming at first. But after a few weeks, everything clicked into place and I developed a patience I never knew I had. I loved every moment. A network of employees and visiting volunteers kept the cogs turning, and I was honoured to be part of it. As my stay was longer than most volunteers, I got to know Pieter and the team well, and when it came time to say goodbye after six months, I was absolutely heartbroken, but I vowed to return. Inspired by my experience, once back in London, I got a job in social care, focusing on children with disabilities. I stayed in touch with Prithipura, and a few months later, Pieter came to the UK to visit family, and we met up a few

80 d Katherine and Pieter times. It was lovely to reminisce and ask him about all the children. But it was also nice to get to know Pieter as a friend rather than a colleague. He was so kind and caring, and I could definitely sense chemistry between us. Only, neither of us said anything. We lived on opposite sides of the world – we had completely different lives. Over the next two years, Pieter and I stayed in touch sporadically, and I went to visit Prithipura for a fortnight in 2009. Then, on New Year’s Eve 2010, I was about to head into town to celebrate when I got a phone call from Pieter out of the blue. “Happy New Year,” he said, and I felt butterflies. “Shall we talk again tomorrow?” I asked and Pieter agreed. After that, we began Skyping each other every day, and very quickly, I realised it wasn’t just the children I loved and missed. It was Pieter, too. Over the next several months, we started talking seriously about a future together and getting

married. Although Pieter had a British passport, he was too dedicated to leave the charity, so it would be up to me to leave my life in the UK. I had to be sure it was what I wanted, so the following April, I booked a flight to Sri Lanka. Pieter turned up with flowers at the airport, and seeing him made my heart skip a beat. It was pouring with rain, and once we got outside the airport, Pieter and I had our first kiss. I stayed for three weeks and arranged to go back again in August. After going back to the UK, I counted down the days until I’d see Pieter again. Four months later, I went back to Sri Lanka, and Pieter arrived again at the airport holding a bunch of flowers. One evening, as we sat on a terrace overlooking the ocean, Pieter produced a beautiful ring out from his pocket and proposed. I was incredibly happy, and

although I knew it would be hard leaving my friends and family behind, Prithipura was a home from home, and I knew I could make a happy life there with Pieter. My parents were heartbroken about me leaving, but they were also delighted for me. In January 2012, Pieter and I married in a small registry office ceremony in London surrounded by close friends and family. Then, in March, I packed up my life and we flew to Sri Lanka to start our new life together. Everyone at Prithipura was so happy to see me with Pieter, and I was honoured to help him run the community. While I took charge of sponsorship, fundraising, volunteer support and sustainability plans, Pieter oversaw all projects across our four locations. There was always a lot to do and the years flew by. Then, in 2020, the coronavirus

‘I was incredibly happy’

pandemic spread around the world and all our communities had to go into lockdown. It was terrifying, and Pieter and I had many sleepless nights worrying about every conceivable scenario. At one point, we nearly ran out of food, but we took things day by day and managed to keep everyone well and safe. And because Pieter and I weren’t rushing off to the next meeting or errand, there was more time to spend with the children. Whenever I felt anxious, stressed and worried about the pandemic, a smile from Ashu, three, who has Down’s syndrome, was enough to make me feel stronger. And it was amazing to see how far Dinushi, now 12, had come since I’d first cared for her as a baby. She’s grown into such a lovely little girl who has learned to write, draw and sew using her mouth. All our children can surpass expectations. Sadly, Pieter’s father died in 1997, and his mum passed away in 2018, but they would be so proud of what Pieter continues to achieve. Sri Lanka has just gone into its second national lockdown, and we have remained in selfisolation to shield so many of our high-risk vulnerable children and adults. Of course, I miss my family back in the UK, but I wouldn’t swap my life here with Pieter and our community for anything. I feel so lucky to call this Happy Village my home. ● For more information and to donate or volunteer, visit Prithipura. org or Facebook.com/PrithiCom

I brought up my kids as good Christians and active members of our church. But my son changed when he went to university, came out as gay, and has been disrespectful to our family ever since. He has opposing views on religion and politics to us, which causes arguments. My husband has just about had enough and has told me that if I want a relationship with our son, it needs to be away from the house. I love my son, even though I don’t approve of his lifestyle choices. It would be easier if he were more discreet about his sexuality. Why does he shout it from the rooftops?

44 Bella

I am 72 and have been retired for a couple of years. I live with my daughter, son-in-law and two grandchildren. A few years ago, we sold our flats and bought a house together, but these last couple of years, things haven’t been going well. My son-in-law is very controlling, and it’s been worse since lockdown as he’s been working from home. He’s quite spiteful towards me. I have always helped out, bringing up their kids, paying some bills, and all my money is tied up in the house. He now earns a good wage and it seems I’m no longer of use. I feel mentally and emotionally bullied. My daughter says she feels in the middle, but seems to support her husband. This has caused a lot of trouble in the family as he’s fallen out

with others, too. I’m worried I’m going down the same path. I love them dearly, but I don’t know what to do for the best.

A

I think there’s more going on here than meets the eye. You say that it’s the last couple of years that have been particularly difficult, and this coincides with your retirement. Throw into the

A

Your son has not made any choices. Being gay is just who he is, and maybe he wouldn’t feel the need to shout it from the rooftops if he didn’t feel so judged. I understand that your religion has taught you that homosexuality is wrong, but there are many factions of the Christian Church who have moved with the times and practice a far more accepting attitude. Your son is furious because he feels rejected by the people who should be showing him unconditional love. Although the wider world is changing, it is still a rocky path to take, especially while there are people in the world who think like you and your husband. Being gay isn’t a dirty secret. Educate yourself, or risk losing your son forever. Ask him to help you, rather than expecting him to change himself to fit in with your family.

mix the fact that your son-in-law’s career has gone in the opposite direction and he is now far more financially stable than he was when you all made the decision to pool your resources. So, his sense of his own authority has gone up, while perhaps you have your own feelings about retiring. We sometimes link our sense of who we are to what we do for a living.

to treat girls with respect. Or should I be letting them play the field? I don’t want my experience with their father to colour my judgement.

A Worried they will be like their dad

Q

I split up with my ex a few years ago after lots of lies and betrayal. He was a serial cheater. I have two teenage sons who are now having relationships with girls. I’m fearful that they are going to turn out like their father, so I question their intentions. I know they aren’t in serious relationships, but I want them

I hope you have found a way to feel supported in order to process the loss of your marriage and any feelings regarding how your ex treated you. I believe this will enable you to distinguish when you are overidentifying with the girlfriends or when you are simply teaching your boys to be respectful. And this is an important role, especially as their dad hasn’t shown himself to be a good example. However, don’t bring him into your discussions. Your kids don’t need to know what went wrong between the two of you, even though it’s hard not to point the finger of blame. You are,

your future

It gives our days and weeks a structure, and means that we are contributing to the wider world. It’s possible that, on some level, you remind him of a time when he wasn’t financially independent and needed you to help. Perhaps in order to combat that uncomfortable feeling, he asserts his authority over you. People try to control their environment as a defence against feeling unworthy and useless. I wonder if you and your son-in-law are scrapping over control because you both feel unsure about your own worth. You’re playing tug of war with him, and it will continue until one of you lets go. However, if living with him has really become unbearable and you’re worried that it’s going to impact your relationship with your daughter, perhaps you should find a way to move out. Could they buy you out now they are more financially comfortable? I imagine you got on well before all this got in the way, so I’d hope you can rediscover that aspect of your relationship and remember why you thought it was a good idea to live together.

however, free to give them an insight into what it feels like to be a teenage girl! Boys should be educated from as young as possible about how to be respectful, and you are in the best position to do so.

Once again you’re on the hunt for opportunities and chances. You’re wise to keep an open mind, but be discerning on the 18th, when something could turn out to be a dead end. You start to concentrate on long-term plans from the 21st, but don’t rush them. Theme of the week: Challenge

After a hectic start to the week, you prefer to take life at a more leisurely pace. The 18th is wonderful for enjoying your home comforts, and on the 19th, you’re caught up in some comforting and poignant nostalgia. Personal plans are on the agenda from the 21st, particularly if you want to try something new. Theme of the week: Emotions

20 February – 20 March

Someone makes a promise they may never be able to deliver at the start of the week, so don’t expect too much from them. A project you’re involved in shows signs of needing to be scaled back from the 20th, especially if you’re worried that it’s getting too ambitious. Theme of the week: Close ties

ARIES

21 March – 20 April

You’re in great demand this week, not only from you-know-who, but also your wider circle of friends. Proceed with caution on the 18th, when you have divided loyalties over being with a close partner or being with a gang of people. It’s going to be an exercise in tact. Theme of the week: Intimacy

Work and other commitments keep you busy at the start of the week, but try not to overdo it. You’re focused on togetherness on the 18th, when any activities involving teamwork are looking good. Avoid being possessive on the 20th. It won’t be pretty! Theme of the week: Staying active

Being a Sagittarian means you’re almost unfailingly optimistic, but beware of overconfidence as the week begins. It’s easy to ignore some difficult facts because you’re swept away by wishful thinking. On the 20th, you blossom when you’re with someone you trust. Theme of the week: Teamwork

21 April — 21 May

Personal finances are highlighted this week, especially if you’re making canny purchases. You long to laze the day away on the 19th, but are you able to? A friend’s considerate actions earn them a place in your heart on the 21st, which is also the start of an active phase. Theme of the week: Duty

Your confidence gets a big boost this week, which is exactly what you need if you want to push ahead with your fresh ideas. Even so, someone close to home causes a few ructions on the 18th. Maybe they feel threatened by some of the things you’re talking about? Theme of the week: Being yourself

Rose Byrne felt the burn making new series Physical

challenging and daunting, which is good. I especially loved how doing all the physical routines take you out of being so selfconscious as a performer.

repare to get hooked on Rose Byrne’s new dark comedy Physical on Apple TV, which will send you into a leotard-buying frenzy! Set in the beach paradise of sunny ’80s San Diego, the series follows Sheila Rubin, a quietly tortured, seemingly dutiful housewife supporting her smart, but controversial husband’s bid for state assembly. But she’s battling a complex set of personal demons relating to her self-image until she finds release through the unlikeliest source – the world of aerobics. At first hooked on the exercise itself, Sheila’s real road to empowerment comes when she discovers a way to merge this newfound passion with the burgeoning technology of videotape to start

a revolutionary business. The series tracks her epic journey as Sheila transforms into someone we take for granted today, but was entirely radical at the time – the female lifestyle guru. For Rose, 41, the draw of a show celebrating a woman rising up was obvious after making the acclaimed Mrs America about the feminist movement in the ’70s. The Bridesmaids actress is currently in her homeland of Australia with her partner of nine years, Bobby Cannavale, and their children Rocco, five, and Rafa, three.

Why did you want to make this show? When I read the first script, I was so moved. It felt like a story I hadn’t seen before, and it’s incredibly human and relatable. For me, as an artist, it was very

Yes, she said she was so focused on all the driving she had to do for the film that she didn’t have time to do so much acting. It became a lesson in how, with the focus required for a task like driving – or, in my case, aerobics – it’s impossible to be as self-conscious in our performance. Even in my extremely tight leotard.

We learn about Sheila’s eating disorder through her critical “inner voice” – did you relate to that at all? Women can be incredibly selfdestructive in what we do to ourselves and to our bodies, and I don’t think that’s represented enough in the stories I see. Sheila doesn’t know how to articulate it, but she wants a seat at the table. She is trying to harness this ambition while harbouring secret, terrible shame, and a destructive illness.

Are you a fan of aerobics? Before filming, I began working

And they really are tight! Now, every kind of Instagram influencer wears those outfits. The late ’80s to early ’90s is extremely current right now. And putting on those outfits felt like that. The evolution of style and how it all recycles is so interesting. We had a fantastic costume designer who was just so detailed,

Cindy Crawford in her 1992 workout VHS

e h t o d o d r o f w ra kout’ Playing Sheila in the show

I did the Cindy Crawford workout in my living room in my suburb of Balmain, Sydney, where I grew up, around 1993. I vividly remember the circular camera work, the location changes from the beach to an indoor mat – in perhaps a warehouse? Also, vividly, the black-and-white, then smashing to colour. Most importantly, her amazing hair, the signature cut-offs and, I think, a white thong bodysuit at some point.

I try to do it every day for 15 to 20 minutes. It’s a great way to quiet the mind. I’ve gone through stages where I’ve had personal trainers, and I really enjoy doing strength training when I have the time to work with someone. When I’m back home in Australia, I love to swim. There, we have great 50-metre Olympic-size swimming pools that are often fresh water. I’m a big swimmer. I do notice that now, as I’m getting older, it takes a little longer to get my fitness back. But exercise does help you feel better. It’s a great stress reliever.

And what is exercise for you now?

Are you quite health conscious?

Exercise is a juggling thing with small kids. I’ve been taking a lot of long walks and hikes, all that cliché stuff. And doing yoga, which I started when I was 15 and rediscovered during quarantine.

I’m really good at sleeping. I’m not particularly a night owl, so I’m in bed early. I try to get seven to eight hours. I always drink warm water with lemon first thing in the morning, which I’ve done

Did you do any of the exercise videos from this era when you were younger?

for 20 years. Overall, I drink a lot of water all day. I just got one of those ridiculous gallon water bottles that I carry around. I’ve been apologising to everyone for just how obnoxious it is. I grew up with foodie parents, so they always instilled in us the idea of real food. I have that as my baseline, and I follow in the footsteps of my mum and dad. But wrangling two small boys is challenging. I have my moments of looking at a million recipes and trying to be creative and find new ideas, then I just end up making the same things for three weeks. I certainly believe a little bit of everything is good, and I let myself have it. Everything in moderation. I enjoy food, so I don’t want to deprive myself of anything I really like. My all-time favourite is spaghetti Bolognese. Also, my mum does a really great spinach pie. And I love Mexican food –

chips, guacamole, margaritas. I could eat that all the time.

You are more selective about the roles you take now – has being a mum changed the way you look at acting? Motherhood is such a profound change, from the physical experience of it to raising the kids. It’s so different for everybody, and I think it’s really hard for women to talk about it. There’s so much expectation and shame around it – it’s very complicated. But it’s also the greatest thing that’s ever happened to me. It did change my career ambition, as it streamlined things in a clear way. But there’s the struggle of trying to prioritise both – am I doing enough at home? Am I fulfilled at work? The balance of work and home life is a personal experience. I don’t judge anyone. l Physical, Friday 18 June, Apple TV

with the show’s choreographer via Zoom. We did online classes, building the choreography. This show is a journey for Sheila, so the routines have to look rough in the beginning, and then she slowly gains her confidence and strength. I hadn’t been doing a lot of cardio personally, so that was very hard. But it was fun, and I really loved the training. I can see how it becomes addictive.

Rose found the script “incredibly moving and relatable”

CODEBREAKER Each number in this grid represents a letter. We’ve placed one word, which shows you that the numbers 4, 16 and 11 represent the letters K, I and T, so write these letters in the appropriate squares. This should give you enough clues to start guessing the identity of the other letters. The completed grid will include all 26 letters of the alphabet.

Killer Sudoku is based on the traditional sudoku grid and every column, every row and every 3x3 box must contain the digits 1 to 9. But there’s a twist – the dotted squares must be filled with numbers that add up to that in the left corner.

one last thing CHRISTINA AGUILERA Xtina, 40, is getting Dirrty by releasing her own line of merchandise for Pride, complete with mesh top and pants (oh my!).

American actress Busy, 41, celebrated her child Birdie, 12, who came out as nonbinary at the age of ten. She said, “I have so much pride for this kid and everything they are and do.”

RITA ORA She performed at one of the few Pride events allowed to take place this year, and Rita, 30, did it in style. She celebrated Sydney’s 43rd Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras in March.

LIL NAS X Music sensation Lil Nas X, 22, channels the iconic purple-suited Prince after he released the song of the summer, Montero (Call Me By Your Name).

LADY GAGA

Love is love!

The 35-year-old superstar has long been an ally of the LGBTQ+ community with her celebratory anthem Born This Way, and she’s just released a range with Versace for the tenth anniversary.
