BADLY DUBBED With so many new models emerging from VW these days, seemingly on a weekly basis, it’s hard to know what we decipher as ‘new-wave’ cars any more. I guess where this magazine is concerned, the Mk6/7 platforms still fall under that banner. And up until recently, the majority of tuned examples tended to follow a similar route; uprated wheels, suspension, stage 1 map, induction kit and perhaps an aftermarket exhaust. Easy, but a bit boring. We get why this usually happens, because that handful of simple mods can totally transform these cars. This is great for the end user, but as a magazine we still believe you guys like to read stories about the unique and extreme builds, rather than something you can see in the car park at your local supermarket. Thankfully, over the past 12 months, people seem to be taking these ‘new wave’ cars to the extremes, and this month’s cover car is the perfect example. A couple of decades back, 550bhp VWs didn’t really exist and even ten years ago, cars with that sort of power were unreliable and only really found on drag strips. Matt Thornton’s 550bhp Mk6 R, however, starts on the button and could be used daily, should he wish to do so. While the spec list might be mighty comprehensive, due to a well chosen selection of modern aftermarket parts, the car is both practical and reliable, while being a totally animal, should Matt chose to jump on the loud pedal. There are exciting times ahead... And don’t worry, those more into the old-skool stuff need not fret. We’ve got a pair of stunning Mk2s and a BAM 1.8T Mk1 to mix things up! Enjoy…

hat’s a pirate’s favourite VW? Why, a Golf arggghhh, of course! Despite that substandard intro the Mk6 R seems to have taken on the ginger step child role of the VW R division. Many bemoaned the loss of the sonorous six pot motor and thanks to its relative scarcity, given its fleeting two year

production run, numbers remain quite low compared to its younger and considerably more celebrated Mk7 bro. According to How Many Left.co.uk there are fewer than 390 manual MK6 Rs registered on UK roads. Nevertheless the EA113 engine toting hatch brought with it the classic TFSi tuning techniques that make it ripe for massive upgrades, and nobody is more aware of that than Sussex based, 33 year-old, Matt

Thornton. For some time now we’ve been hassling him to grab a feature on this almighty build, but as is often the way it was, “never quite ready.” Oh, how we beg to differ Matthew, have you seen your spec list? Having been put off a number times as he continued to improve and escalate the extent of his perfection, finally the time has come to reveal all. Are you sitting comfortably? This one is a biggie.

“I bought it back in 2015 as a replacement for an Augusta MV4 bike,” Matt reveals, continuing, “I really wanted the thrill of a bike without all the danger. The Mk6 R had been a dream car of mine for years, as soon as I saw one on the road I knew I had to have one.” Having paid his dues and graduated through a S3, Mk5 R32, big turbo Ibiza and a Mk2 2.9 VR6 when he was just 18 – a car that he built to blag his way into the bodyshop trade, as

well as a handful of other tuned and seriously spritely VAG machinery, the Mk6 was a simple evolutionary step. Hell, even as standard, we all know they don’t hang about, but Matt obviously had bigger things on his synapses. Almost instantly remapped by R Tech and taken to stage 2+ thanks to a Wagner tuning Intercooler, Proram intake and a Hardknocks 3.5-inch turbo downpipe and twin 3” exhaust system the altitude was also reduced on a

set of BC Racing coilovers, as Matt began researching what was possible and how much further the car could progress, “I knew the engine had huge potential, but I genuinely never intended to push on as far as I have. I always think it’s going to be enough, but it never is. It might sound cliched but you really do get used to whatever power you have, especially when the 4Mo chassis makes 400+ horsepower feel really blase.” Also, July 2021

9

"I was on my way to UD when the infamous high-pressure fuel pump issue arose and totalled the cylinder head" he revealed that R-Tech can be quite, erm… particular about the products they rate and the things they’re prepared to work with hence the plastic engine cover still remaining in place for a neater, more OEM look. Matt found the car to be pretty capable like that to be fair, but as time ticked by the niggling for a stage 3 setup, including a TTE420 hybrid turbo just kept bothering him. “That was where it got really serious. I was on my way to Ultimate Dubs in 2019 when the infamous high-pressure fuel pump cam follower issue arose and totalled the cylinder 10

head.” Not far from R Tech at the time the car was trailered there, the head swapped over for a spare they had on the shelf and Matt got going again in time for the show, “That prompted the full on rebuild though, it was time to go fully forged and push on for properly big numbers. I hadn’t seen many MK6 R's taken to that extent at the time.” More on that in a moment, though. As a bit of a B-road terrorist Matt found that when wound down on coilies he kept totalling splitters on bumpy roads with adverse cambers, the answer was a bespoke

installation 3H setup from Airlift with a preset, “nutter / hooning” ride height dialled in, naturally it combines a perfectly presented flocked tank install with a dry carbon tank base and matching manifold. Even the AEM methanol tank that’s sunk into the boot install has been flocked so that it doesn’t stand out too much. That level of attention to detail and OE fanaticism really makes this build shine, Matt even buying a set of Recaro CS seats and having them custom trimmed despite having wingbacks in the car when he got It, all to save 25kg or so in weight.

July 2021

11

"Some of you will probably have noticed the willy waving brakes as well" In fact, he reckons the car is now 120kg shy of factory, tipping the scales at 1326kg for an eventual power-to-weight ratio of a whooping 414bhp per tonne. The cage is just for show - made from ally, powdercoated and custom fabricated by Gary French at GDF Steelworks, yet there’s no compromise when it comes to OEM+ levels of spec or comfort inside. The fully retrimmed wheel in alcantara and perforated leather is a work of art that perfectly complements the lashings of man-made suede, leather and carbon that saturate this fast road focused setup. A tasty smattering of stealth audiophile excellence has also been slotted into this swanky interior – a Kenwood DNX-518DAB headunit, KFCX174 6.5inch speakers and Focal tweeters powered by a X301-4 amp with a surprisingly potent KSC-PSW8 under seat sub serving up the low end keeps Matt happy. Keeping everything roof side up is now left to an achingly packed spec that guarantees those 8.5 x 19 Rotiforms DTMs remain nailed to the black stuff via a set of 215/35 Michelin Pilot Sport 4s. And it’s a trait that Matt happily explores when his better half isn’t in the car, “She’s doesn’t mind go quickly in a straight line, but the twisty bits definitely aren’t her thing,” laughed Matt. With uprated H&R anti roll bars, Superpro bushes throughout, Vibratechnics mounts for engine, gearbox and

subframe, camber adjustable top mounts, Air Lift ARB drop links, Camber Racing adjustable rear arms and strut braces both fore and aft the whole lot is dialled in thanks to a Hunter 4 wheel geo setup. Some of you will probably have noticed the willy waving brakes as well bigger than most people’s dinner plates, and these are Matt’s ‘small’ stoppers that barely squeeze in under his 19-inch rims! Thanks to Audi R8 / Lambo eight piston Brembos up front mounted on custom brackets that match up to monstrous 390 x 32mm J hooked two piece bells and rotors the stopping power on tap is awe-inspiring, “Oh, it STOPS,” laughs Matt. They look pretty lurid finished in Acid green. Not to be outgunned, the rear end also sports four piston Brembos painstakingly custom fitted using 370mm two piece discs and Ferrari F430 handbrake calipers with custom made cables. With all that stopping power comes ample performance, but not before Matt saw to a complete glass out respray in Glasurit Rising Blue. Not content with bolting factory panels back on though he opted for SRS tech 2.5cm wider front wings, OSIR carbon fibre bonnet, a smoothed front bumper and a custom fabricated rear bumper that Matt spent an age grafting Corsa VXR bumper vents into. It is, and there’s no other word for it, staggering. With most of the Maxton Design catalogue

POLAR FIS DISPLAY It’s hard to show this mod (hence no photo), but the Polar FIS info box visualises 146 different engine parameters via the VW MFA readout. It’s like having constant VCDS on your dashboard. You can even perform certain low level diagnostics functions and change things like door locking speed. With RPM, boost, MAF readings and so much more this is a cracking little upgrade for the Mk5/Mk6 platform.

Amazingly it still spools up around 3000rpm though and hits hard all the way to the redline, “You can really drive it though, It’s so addictive and genuinely frightening

summarise quite how epic this Mk6 R is. We’ve only touched briefly upon the expertise, the dedication, the time and passion involved in getting this far, “My favourite thing about owning it is parking it up at a show and listening to people talking about it?” Matt muses, “How did they do that? Why did they do that? Why isn’t mine like that?, they all make me smile.” The fact that this show piece is now savage fast with fierce spool characteristics that just keep gaining in intensity all the way to the redline, is testament to Matt’s endless devotion. INTRODUCING HP TUNERS MPV12 TOOL

Want to tune your own VW yourself? Want to datalog it? Troubleshoot codes? Or use its ECU to create track data? Then HP Tuners MPVI2 tool could be just the ticket. Quite simply, you purchase the MPVI2 dongle for £299, tweak your map to your desired settings and tolerances using the free to download VCM Editor (see www. hptuners.com) and then upload your tune to the vehicle via the OBD port using the dongle. According to HPT, it’s really that easy, although for those who see it as a double edged sword – due to the complexities of mapping knowledge and understanding how an engine will react to certain changes – HP Tuners dealers around Europe will be able to offer off-theshelf, upload-and-go coding solutions to suit whatever stage of economy or performance tuning you’re looking for. Basically, once you have a license for a certain ECU / ECM that credit is linked to the ECU forever. If for any reason you have to replace the ECU at a later date, the license goes with the old computer, so you’ll need to re-flash any other ECU with

new credit(s). So, once you’ve paid out for MPVI2 dongle, you can then upload each tune using something HP term as a credit, with each credit costing £50 – some ECUs require multiple credits in order to flash them. So, imagine if you will, a group of mates with similar cars and upgrades all chipping in (see what we did there?) for a dongle and then paying out to remap each car from as little as £50 each – how budget conscious is that? Even if you have to shell out for a pre-approved map from one of the growing list of HP Tuners dealers, it’s still the most cost-effective way to gain performance while opening up the possibility to grow and learn all about engine management. And there’s more. HP Tuners also offer a range of supporting data logging and acquisition tools including both the Track Addict app for your Smartphone and Race Render software for video output data logging and overlays via a PC or Mac. Track Addict is the app that turns any smartphone into a powerful motorsports telemetry and

JUST

£299

video system. You can see your lap times instantly, capture video and telemetry data, analyse laps and impress your inline audience with video and data overlays. It even works with OBD-2 interfaces so that you can add additional data such as engine RPM, throttle position and temperatures. Best of all, it’s free and you get almost all of the functionality even with the complementary download version. You’d be mad not to have it on your blower, really! Race Render, on the other hand, is a much more involved software package that’s intended for either PC or Mac users. Create amazing videos with high-tech data overlays using GPS and OBD-2 signals. By combining the output from your camera (GoPro, 360FLY, Sony ActionCam, Garmin VIRB and many others) you can visualise the data from a range of GPS devices, dataloggers and other third-party apps. However good your lap, Race Render can help to bring your performance alive. PRICE: £299 CONTACT: www.hptuners.com

MISHI MATCH The team over at Mishimoto has just released a performance aluminium radiator for the 2015+ VW MK7 Golf TSI/GTI/R and if these photos are anything to go by, then it’s going to be pretty damn effective. Said to offer a 2.7°C reduction in global coolant temperatures and have a 56% increase in radiator core volume the vital stats certainly stack up. The rad features a 1.65" (42mm) thick, efficiently brazed aluminium core with TIG-welded end tanks, strutted tubes for maximum durability and CNC-machined inlet and outlets (with OEM style quick disconnect fittings). Offering efficient temperature regulation for both stock and modified vehicles these come with Mishimoto’s usual lifetime warranty. Seems like a no brainer upgrade to us. When Leigh Parker set out to build a homage to his Nineties Mk2 project, the right donor bodyshell couldn’t have been further from his doorstep. Words: Alex Grant Photos: Ben Hosking

here are countless personal reasons why it can happen, but some cars just get under your skin, and parting company can leave a void that ultimately only one machine can fill. Re-capturing that feeling years later is never easy, held up by a dwindling stock of once readily available base cars and finding the right parts. As if that’s not hard enough, Leigh Parker had the added challenge of managing the long-planned resto-mod from the other side of the world. Behind the New South Wales plates, this ’88 GTI is very much a product of the UK scene. British-born Leigh moved to Australia 20 years ago, taking the ideas that went into the build with him. Growing up with a petrolhead for a Dad before taking a summer job at his uncle’s workshop, he completed his apprenticeship at a Volkswagen and Audi dealership in 1988 and fell for the Mk2 Golf while he was there. It would take a couple of years to get into his own GTI, and another eight before he traded it in – for another Mk2. The memories of heydayperiod ownership were hard to shake off. “I just love the way the Mk2 drives, and it’s a pretty simple car with a classic look,” he tells us. “This is my third, and it’s a homage to the first one I bought in 1990; a Tornado Red 8-valve which I fitted with a 2.0-litre Audi bottom end and all the usual mods. I met loads of great people through work, and I was a member of Club GTI in the UK, so I went to eight or nine GTI Internationals and saw endless variations on these early cars. The scene here is good, but it’s nothing like the UK was back in the 1990s.” Without the change of scenery, he’d

T

probably have kept that pattern going for a little longer, but Australia didn’t offer much in the way of spiritual successors to those past projects. The Mk2 hadn’t attracted the same following as it had in Europe and, although Volkswagen had imported around 250 GTIs, they came with a hobbled 8-valve engine to meet emissions regulations and had two more doors than Leigh could live with. There are a handful of more desirable imports, but anyone who’d gone through the hassle of bringing one in wasn’t giving it up easily. Leigh wasn’t prepared to compromise: “I had been without a Mk2 for nine years since I moved to Australia, and felt it was time to get another one. So I bought this car – unseen, obviously – for £285 on eBay UK and had it transported to my friend’s farm so he could look at it. It was an MoT fail and the previous owner didn’t want to fix it, but I wanted a Tornado red three-door to have it matched to the VIN, the trim was good, and it hadn’t been in an accident. The rest I could repair.” He’s shrugging off a sizeable logistical nightmare. The GTI turned up at his parents’ house in Darlington on a flatbed and, having spent years working out the spec in his head, Leigh started tracking down new or upgraded parts that would have been near impossible to find locally. This wasn’t always a shortcut; the G60 arch trims and that Bonrath single wiper conversion – both identical to that 1990s project car – aren’t readily available these days, even if you’re in Europe. With that very specific vision in mind, the stakes were dizzyingly high by the time that rolling collection of hard-sought parts was loaded into a shipping container for the long journey to Sydney. Besides the financial risks, July 2021

27

tracking down replacements could have added months to the rebuild once it landed in Oz. “I had to submit the VIN and car details to the Australian government to get Vehicle Import Approval so it could leave the docks and be registered here,” he explains. “It arrived as a running and driving car but, as it was from the UK, it had its fair share of rust to deal with. The condition wasn’t too important, because it was going to be stripped and rebuilt anyway.” As a Porsche main dealer workshop manager, Leigh also had the skills to take on most of the restoration himself. With the Golf stripped and loaded onto a rotisserie, he spent months replacing rotten panels with solid metal, shortcutting some of the fabrication with the help of a five-door shell he’d been able to source locally. Healing the scars of the British climate went as deep as replacing the entire roof panel, and he even took on painting the engine bay and underside, leaving only the external panels to a bodyshop. Line it up against a photo of his old Mk2, and it’s very obviously a modernised

28

Performance VW

interpretation, albeit with a few extra details tended to. The redundant holes for nowremoved wipers and the wing-mounted aerial were deleted along with the rust, while the trim was updated to 90 spec with big bumpers and those near-unobtainable G60 arches. There’s a period-correct look to its red-pinstriped dual-lamp grille, smoked indicators and single wiper, but the slotted gills above the bumper and those ducts in place of the fog lights are a hint that there’s a bit more going on underneath than a hopped-up 8-valve. This sort of performance would have been a lot harder to come by 20 years ago. Leigh tracked down an early 150hp AGU-code 1.8T, which has the big-port head, higher compression ratio and tougher internals, and rebuilt it with a set of forged conrods for extra peace of mind. Boost is provided by an IHI VF22 ball-bearing turbo, mounted on a Jabbasport manifold imported with the car and drawing air in through a larger MAF housing and carbon fibre inlettubing. The important numbers? An estimated 350hp, put down

through an 02J with a Quaife diff, lightened G60 flywheel, VR6 clutch and a taller fifth gear for cruising. It’s a spec reflecting a machine built for a broad range of talents, but it wasn’t easy finding space for all the hardware. “The plan was to build a fast street car with track capability – inspired by Anders Ranbo’s silver Mk2 from the Nineties - and I had decided on that spec a long time before I started. But sourcing the parts was an endless problem, and everything I couldn’t buy had to be cut and fabricated from raw materials,” he recalls. “So the downpipe is made from scratch and I build a custom engine mount to make room for it. Same with the intercooler, I had to bin the original front crossmember and make a tubular one to mount it to. It was mostly my work, but I had to have help with the engine because I broke my shoulder mid build, so my arm was in a sling.” Despite the OE-style install, the engine bay is home to a staggering amount of custom work, including the punched aluminium heat shield protecting the firewall, the crackle-painted

cover over the coil packs and Leigh’s own airbox design behind the passenger side headlight. That need for extra space also meant relocating the washer bottle and battery inside the cabin and tucking the oil cooler away behind the grille. Restoring the car from a stripped bodyshell offered opportunities for a few

less obvious upgrades, too. The inner wings are braced against the base of the A-pillar, adding stiffness alongside the weld-in front strut brace and the substantial-looking roll cage where the rear seats once were. KW V3 coilovers put it around 40mm closer to the tarmac than factory spec, paired with a full set of polybushes, thicker anti-roll bars and adjustable camber plates, dialled in to 2.0 degrees negative up front and 1.5 at the back. Every bracket and brace was painted or powdercoated before being re-fitted. The Australian registration process is strict on safety, so the Golf had to have the right kit to handle that extra power without risking shredded tyres or cooked brakes. The 17" BBS RX are a nod to his old Mk2 and offer enough space behind the spokes for a set of four-pot Porsche 996 calipers and re-drilled Ibiza Cupra R discs up front, and there’s a Mk4-based disc conversion at the back. Leigh changes between EBC RedStuff and BlueStuff pads for road and track, but the Pirelli P Zero Neros are sticky enough to meet all needs. As is the interior. It’s a little like a GTI Clubsport, featuring Australian-made Velo bucket seats trimmed in factory red-pinstriped cloth to match the door cards, but with almost no bare metal left on show. A bank of VDO gauges just below eye level mean he can glance at what’s happening with that overboosted powertrain, while the gearstick is raised on a custom-made platform for easy reach on track and paired with a short-shift kit. As an added layer of safety, there are external and internal kill switches for the battery – worth having, but hopefully never to be used. “The car was quite difficult to register with so many modifications. It had to comply with the rules of a new car that was registered

in 1988 in Australia, then it needed to have an engineer’s certificate for all the modifications, and the rules are different in each state. So in Queensland I wouldn’t have been able to have a half cage in a street car,” explains Leigh. “I was fortunate enough to find a great guy who was able to certify my car as an engineer and for compliance at the same time. It took around three months going back and forth – delayed by silly things like the emissions label under the bonnet, the seatbelt buttons having to have ‘press’ written on them, and the gear knob had to have the shift pattern on top – but we got there. The first time I drove the car I realised all the hard work was worth it.” Wheel time isn’t a rare experience. Having put in the hard graft during the build, the Golf does almost all of his weekend mileage – not

only shows and track days, but the stuff his old Mk2 would have, like shopping, grabbing some lunch, or heading out into the New South Wales countryside to let off some steam. That it’s picked up class wins at VITS and VW Nationals says a lot when show and shines fall between sessions of locking horns with big-power Japanese cars and domestic market V8s at Bathurst, Bulahdelah and Canberra hill climb events. As an all-rounder, it seems he’s struck the right balance. Needless to say, he’s smitten: “It’s so solid and almost modern, and if I’ve got the suspension set to soft then it’s fine – I get no complaints from my partner. I’ve driven it 250km to a fundraiser then driven home after four hours, and I was fine. The worst part is having no air conditioning – on a hot day in Australia, it can be a bit much.

“But I love how a 30-year-old car can be competitive on track one day and be out doing my grocery shopping the next. Most weekends my company car doesn’t move between Friday night and Monday morning. There’s nothing I’d change because I made sure it had everything I wanted beforehand.” With an appetite for the unusual, who knows where that might lead. The Golf hasn’t been immune from ongoing evolution, gaining a hidden ICE install since our shoot, and Leigh has continued to track down obscurities from Europe too. A set of stainless steel boot lip trims from a Deutsche Post Mk2 delivery van are the latest additions. Just as unwilling to pass on his hard work as the handful of other owners, there are countless reasons why Leigh is unlikely to find himself with that same automotive void any time soon ■

“It was cheap, straight and solid. I decided that as it was a bare shell I could add what I felt were the best bits" one. They were the first true hot hatch and appealed to me. I have two MK1 GTIs. One is the 1983 Mars Red car you see here and this is my first proper ‘restomod’. The other car is a 1982 silver example and provides a near period experience but I couldn’t resist some mild upgrades such as KW V1 suspension, BBS RM 15” alloys, and Recaro Mk2 Golf Electric seats. The ID.3 is my current daily driver which makes sense given my substantial daily commute to London”. The story of this stunning car starts in 2017 when Prittin saw an impressive Mk1 Golf online. Some cunning Facebook detective work revealed that the car in question belonged to Piotr Smentoch, a Polish enthusiast. Prittin made contact and

was referred to revered car builder, Andrzej Roszman of Gdansk, Poland. It was agreed that Andrzej could build a car to Prittin’s exact specification in situ whilst being project managed from the UK. Prittin explained: “I wanted the car to have the complete look that the European’s execute so well, so I had the idea of getting a car actually built in a country where they ‘get it’”. The hunt was now on for a suitable project base. Prettin found a bargain £800 bodyshell on Gumtree: “It was cheap, straight and solid. I decided that as it was a bare shell I could add what I felt were the best bits and make a car that was better than what came out of the VW factory all those years ago”. A deal was done and the car was soon bound

for Polish pastures. The Mk1 was taken back to bare metal to ensure that paint wasn’t hiding anything sinister. Prittin decided to use a Series 1 boot and rear valance as he liked the minimal look. All dents and imperfections in the metal were corrected and worked on. Coarse factory spot welds were removed and expertly re-executed resulting in the clean faultless look evident in the photographs. Andrzej laid down the iconic Mars Red hue. Next on the list was the power plant. Prittin decided on a 225 BHP BAM engine for a reliable tried and tested solution. A 2004 Audi TT was liberated of one and it was shipped to Poland. For peace of mind, this was rebuilt before fitting. A bespoke radiator

and intercooler were fabricated to keep temperatures safe whilst a K&N induction kit and custom stainless steel exhaust look after breathing and bring the burble. Part of the attraction to Piotr’s aforementioned inspirational car was the way it sat. H&R Ultra Low coilovers were duly drafted in to achieve the perfect stance over the staggered 17” BBS RS wheels that

38

Performance VW

were built up in Poland. Nankang NS-2 tyres complete the rolling stock package. Prittin explained: “For me, there was only one wheel choice. BBS RS are the holy grail but it's rare to see them in 17” fitment on a Mk1”. Front stock Mk1 GTI brake discs are backed up by a Mk4 Golf 226mm disc and calliper conversion for the rear which is a useful upgrade over the standard drums.

Prittin took time to consider the different elements of the build holistically to ensure that the project flows. The Mars Red exterior with its black stripes, backdated rear, GTI red-trimmed single light grill, and series 1 bumpers complements the interior where the red pinstriped instrument cluster, early steering wheel and period-looking Retrosound head unit continue the classic vibe. VDO

gauges are a subtle reminder that this MK1 has the go to match the show. Electric Recaro LS seats from a Mk2 Golf Edition Blue join a rear Mk1 Jetta coupe rear bench. A self-confessed Porschephile, Prettin drew inspiration from the 2018 GT3 and sourced the correct leather and Alcantara to achieve the striped look. This is a clever nod to Stuttgart whilst simultaneously continuing the colour coding. An in-keeping subtle but high-

40

Performance VW

quality audio install includes Rockford Fosgate speakers and an under-seat sub. Prittin is thrilled with the end result: “I never visited but had hundreds of photos at every stage. It’s incredible, they had my car and I paid them and they built it without me meeting them face to face. All decisions were mine but the execution was by Andrzej. He did a great job”. The deadline of March 2020 was set to avoid potential post-Brexit import difficulties. The car

was duly trailered back to the UK complete and on time having taken two years to complete. Ironically enjoying the fruits of a continental build has only been hampered by the global pandemic and Prittin’s plans for the car are simply to enjoy it as soon as he can. It doesn’t get much more international than a car originally made in Wolfsburg, rebuilt in Gdansk, project managed from Farnham that creates a Hollywood smile n

ROUND 1 SILVERSTONE OLLY TURNER WINS AT SILVERSTONE After an eventful rollercoaster of a day that saw Olly take pole position in the morning, a driveshaft failure on the start line of Race 1 meant he was unable to contest rival Jack Depper who was dominant in the first race. With some epic spanner work from the boys at JM Racing, Olly was back out for race 2 but started at the back of the grid due to the earlier result. A lightning start, and some of the best racing that was seen all day at Silverstone resulted in our lad climbing quickly through the field and then the trading of places between Olly and Jack throughout most of the race. When the flag dropped, the Scirocco of Depper crossed the line 0.003 seconds ahead of Olly, but the stewards reversed the result following further inspection of a questionable bit of contact, which enabled Olly to take the win. “I just want to say a massive thank you to everyone who sent nice comments and messages over the Silverstone weekend. LARGING IT Covid may have turned the world on its head last year, but that didn’t stop 2020’s Eurobuilt event boasting the largest turn-out to date. Show organiser, Scott Herdling talks us through the highlights… Words: Scott Herdling Photos: Derek Kenison eflecting back on what was 2020 I am blown away by the support Eurobuilt Car Show and Charity Auction received. Last year’s show, held August 30 at the Vermont State Fairgrounds, brought the Euro community out in force, with the show’s largest attendance since its inception. The show is a great opportunity to bring together the best people and cars in New England while raising funds for Foundation Blue. This year’s show was dedicated to the memory of my Dad, Robert Herdling, known as Pops to those in the car community, who passed away in November 2019.

The show isn’t possible without the support of our sponsors, led by title sponsor Sam’s Euro Shop. Eurobuilt is more than a car show, it is about community and giving back. The cars and trophies are a bonus, not the focus. Again this year the charity auction benefited Foundation Blue and additional funds were raised for Shriner’s Hospitals for Children in honour of Pops. The judges had their work cut out for them, with over 20 classes of top-notch cars to go through. Each year the heavy hitters shoot for the specialty awards. The crew from Sam’s Euro Shop chose Geoff Landstrom and his immaculate MK7 GTI as Sponsors' Choice. Best Paint and Body

Top honours with the Promoter’s Choice award, without a doubt, had to go to Cory Sterling and his period correct Mk3 GTI (PVW 11/20). Other notable cars in attendance included Matt Downs with his blue diamond wrapped Golf R, Justin Pelerin and his

VW CC, Stephen Florio and his S3 (which took top honours in class and best engine presented by Midnight Motors) and we cannot forget Evan Solimine and his super clean Corrado. Building on last year’s success with the charity auction, the Eurobuilt team and those in attendance stepped up their game and

NOT BOUGHT

o, this story starts with a rather mint Black MK2 16v. I’d bought the 16v locally as a non-runner with a blown head gasket. It was relatively low mileage, but the paintwork was tatty. Unfortunately, on our way home we had a little accident whilst towing the 16v and so the already tatty bodywork required some repair work and a full respray. When I got the 16v back from the body shop it was mint and with the help of my friend John Davis at Kent Volkswagen I put it back together again and absolutely loved it. I was living on a main road near a busy pub and it was constantly getting

damaged, so I decided to sell it and buy a cheap project car to smoke around in. With a few quid burning a whole in my pocket I started looking for a replacement Golf. I would regularly hang out with (annoy) John at Kent Volkswagen. One day I was chatting with him in his yard and spotted this pink B reg Mk2 1.3 C (poverty spec) with a cool number plate sitting in the corner looking rather sorry for itself. John had bought it as a non-runner and was using it as a spares car. I had a quick look around it and it had everything that I wanted. Back then in our area everybody wanted big bumper Golfs and the early golfs were being made to look like

90 spec Golfs too. Also, it was just starting to become fashionable to shave off trim pieces and this little Golf being the poverty C spec was never supplied with any trim anyway, so it didn’t have all the holes in the doors etc that everyone was busy filling. After a quick inspection I decided that it was just what I was looking for and so I asked John what he wanted for it. He said I could have it for a £100, so I bought it there and then. All I needed was somewhere to build it. My friend Chris Elliot had just opened his own garage, which was in a massive barn. I managed to convince Chris and his business partner to let me store and work on the car in

his workshop. My plan was simple, I wanted a ratty looking track inspired car. I’d strip out all the interior, throw the wide track running gear off a Mk3 16v Golf on it and turbo charge a 16v engine. Chris quickly talked me out of the 16vt route and suggested that I go for a 20vt instead. Today, 20vt conversions are ten a penny because the donor cars are so cheap, but back then it was a relatively expensive conversion. And so a 20vt engine was sourced, but it was in a box of bits and we really didn’t know what state it was in. It ended up that the head was junk and needed replacing and then a rather inexperienced me wrecked one of the cylinder bores of the

block trying to install the pistons. Enthusiasm and cash for the little project Golf evaporated pretty quickly and so she sat in Chris’s workshop gathering dust for about 18 months. What happened next is a story I expect a lot of petrol heads can relate to. In what felt like a very short period of time I got a new “full time” job, met the love of my life and bought our first home together, which became the sequel to the film “The Money Pit”. All my time and money was being soaked up by the house and the Golf became a distant memory. Chris, got bored of looking at the car in his workshop, so we stripped a MK3 Golf and had the running gear powder coated. He then fitted them on

the car along with some new polybushes, coilovers and delivered the car back to me. We parked it up on the front garden and it sat as a garden ornament for 7 years. Running a car club has meant that I’ve got to meet some really great people over the years who in turn have become really great friends. You also usually hear about what people are selling before anyone else does. When something came up for sale (usually when someone was breaking their own project car) that I needed I would buy it and store it away in our loft. I bought the MK3 GTi Edition Recaro interior from a friend called Dan and stored it up in our loft for a couple of years. July 2021

I’ve always said, you buy things when you can afford them and sell the when you need the money, and sure enough I sold the Recaros on to another member of our club. A few years later he put his Vento up for sale and I bought them back again for what I’d sold them to him for. The engine came to me in a similar way. Jim Yeoman and his partner Fiona Hill have been members of my car club since they bought a Corrado G60 as a daily for Fiona. They would come to our meets in the Corrado and Jim would often bring his Sierra Cosworth along, too. Jim owned a garage locally and was very much into the fast Ford scene (in fact anything that went fast really). Over the years the G60 started to deteriorate to the point where they decided to break it for spares. That included the engine and gearbox, which I promptly bought off them on the condition that they would store it for me until I was ready to use it. Jim had started working on another one of our club member's Corrado VR6 Storms. I was really impressed with what they were doing and when it was finished the VR6 had 575bhp and I was blown away by how great

the bay looked. A conversation and a bit of negotiation and Jim was on board to build my Golf. The only problem was that like all good tradesmen he already had a list of cars that would need to be finished before he could get to mine. 3 years and a unit move later I finally pestered him into letting me come down to the workshop one day a week to start freshening up the G60 engine. The supercharger was already modified to stage 4 and went off to Jabba Sport for a refresh. I managed to buy NOS BBM billet aluminium fuel rails to replace the brittle factory rail and plumbed in an Aeromotive fuel pressure regulator so that I could set the fuel pressure exactly to match the Jabba Sport Stage 4 Chip. The rest of the engine and gearbox got a good strip down, clean and a refresh coat of paint. A further 2 years past and finally I got the nod that my car could take residency in the project bay of the workshop. So, some 10 years had passed since I chewed John’s hand off and bought the Golf. In our club it had become a running joke. I lost

count of the number of times people asked me when it was going to be finished and most had pretty much come to the conclusion that the car wasn't ever going to get done. They started to get a little more interested though when I posted up some pictures of the engine looking brand fire new and ready to slot back in to the shell. With the go ahead from Jim I got the Golf off the front garden and transported it to its new home. I set about stripping the car down ready for it to go off to Graham Musset to receive a fresh coat of Mars Red. I wanted the cars paint to look as if it had just come off the factory production line, so we decided to paint it with just a solid base coat rather than base and clear which is probably a more popular choice for “Show Cars”. Graham did a great job and the car came back to the workshop with a shiny new paint job. Jim still had a few bits of the Corrado laying around the workshop and a quick rummage turned up an adjustable steering column. Being 6’2”, I’ve always struggled to get a comfortable driving position in a Golf. With a little fabrication, we had the Corrado’s column in and then I turned to the electrics. I wanted to make the engine transplant as simple as possible, so the old CE1 electrics were removed and replaced with everything from a

I wanted to clean up the engine bay as best I could. So, all non essential items/brackets were removed, and the battery was relocated to the boot along with the washer bottle. Having got all the interior bits that I needed together, I started to look for someone to re-trim them as they were looking a bit tired and out of place in the now new looking car. I found a local upholstery chap called Martin who runs Martins Upholstery Workshop here in Thanet. We met up, got on really well and a deal was done for him to recover the dashboard, door cards, centre console, in fact nearly every part of the interior. I’d seen some pictures of the new Porsche 911 GT3RS interior and really liked the way they’d used half Leather and half Alcantara, so that’s what we did and I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out. While Martin was busy on the interior, we dropped the refreshed G60 engine into the shell and I started to plumb in the ancillaries. WOLFSBURG EDITION In our area of Kent there were a couple of air-cooled clubs, but nothing for the water-cooled enthusiast. We would turn up to the air-cooled meets in our beaten up GTis and they would look at us like we had two heads. So, we decided to do something about it and started our own club. To start with it was just a couple of us who would meet up and go for a drive. A couple of the mechanics at Kent Volkswagen in Margate were part of our new group, so we’d hang out at the garage and work on our cars. After a while I was nominated to set up a forum and between us we came up with Vagingit. So, we took the laid back attitude of the air-cooled scene and created a water-cooled community. We didn’t want to be a car club with stuffy rules and we didn’t care what you drove, just that you were there. Within the space of a year we’d gathered several hundred members on the forum. It was a local forum for local people who were mostly in the South East of England. We held regular meets and cruises and would support shows with club stands. It was a great time, and we met some amazing friends and cars. A couple of years ago with most of the founding members in their late thirties, we decided to have a bit of a re-brand and changed our name to Wolfsburg Edition. radiator. I then turned my attention to the underside of the car. I already had a Mk3 fuel tank installed, but the car just didn’t look right with the wide track suspension Chris had fitted all those years ago. So, off it all came. One of Jim’s customers (also a member of our club) brought in his 16V Corrado for some work and whilst chatting he let slip that he was thinking of selling the car, but would rather break it up and sell it in parts to get more money. My ears pricked up and before he’d left I had bought all the running gear, the suspension including the uprated G60 brakes and also the wheels. He dropped the car off to us and we set about stripping it for him. With all the Corrado bits on the floor I got the grinder out and wire brushed all the rust off the suspension and gave it a couple of coats of Hammerrite paint before reassembling it with new bearings, brake lines and polybushes. The tank got a good clean out (12 year old fuel had turned to jelly) and the in tank fuel pump was DOA, so I replaced it with a new one. The last piece of the puzzle was the exhaust system. One thing I did know about the G60 engine was that they ran hot and with the inlet manifold sitting directly above the exhaust manifold I wanted to reduce the exhaust temperature as much as I could. I sent the factory exhaust manifold off to Zircotec to be ceramic coated, which they claim reduces the surface temperature by 33%. The 2“ Powerflow stainless exhaust came from another member of our club who couldn’t sell it so we did a swap a for some parts I had and the two were joined together with a custom de-cat pipe. All bolted together it was time to turn the

key and fire the engine up for the first time. That was a bit of an anti-climax as a dead ECU relay prevented us from getting any spark. A new relay later and she fired into life. Martin had finished up the interior bits for me, so they were fitted into the car and we set about cutting and welding the MK3 Recaro’s so they could fit in to the MK2 runners. The Keskin KT1 wheels were refurbished and shod in new rubber and it was time for its MOT. I got to drive the car for the first time in 12 years to the MOT tester, where she passed with flying colours. There was something very strange about driving a car that you’d own for such a long time, but never ever driven. It was compounded by the fact that I’d stripped and replaced nearly every nut and bolt on the car. As you can imagine, everyone in our club was amazed to see me turn up to a meet in her. She even took a top 20 at the OhSoRetro show, which to me is probably the best trophy I could be awarded. The best thing about the car is that she is the sum of all the great cars and people that have passed through our little community, a vulture if you like, picking off the carcasses of the dead projects. A little bit of everyone is in her DNA and that makes her special, not just to me, but to our club. What next? Well, as this project was coming to a close Jim asked me what I was going to do next. I’d become a bit like a piece of furniture in the workshop and I think he was going to miss me being around so we decided to do another project together, but this time it was for Jim as a little thank you for all his help and support over the last 4 years. Hopefully, in the not to distant future (lets hope less than 12 years) we will have finished a track inspired 16v Mk2 ■

MR SAND MAN Volkswagen’s awesome ID.4, with Tanner Foust at the helm, is the first production-based EV to complete the NORRA Mexican 1000 off-road race. Here’s how they did it… Photos: Volkswagen he production ID.4 1st Edition RWD was modified by VW brand ambassador and pro racing driver, Tanner Foust and Rhys Millen Racing for off-road use and in total it covered no less than 840-miles off the beaten track! Not only did Tanner help with the car’s development and preparation, he also piloted this beast of a creation. The Rhys Millen Racing modified rear-wheel-drive ID.4 1st Edition model ran its stock powertrain and 82 kWh battery pack with a modified off-road suspension and racing interior. The ID.4 was one of the 64 vehicles that finished the entirety of the NORRA 1000, out of 90 cars and trucks entered. “This was everything we had hoped for,” said Tanner Foust. “The course was challenging, but the ID.4 was more than up to the tasks we asked of it. This demonstrates the real potential for EV technology to make an impact in all sorts of

areas that we have only just begun to explore.” Stages measured between 33 to 167 miles, and the ID.4 was able to recharge mostly using a portable biofuel-powered generator connected to a 50 kW flat charger. In a couple of instances where the ID.4 was scheduled to be transited to the next stage but the charger was not available, the team flat-towed it behind a chase vehicle for a short distance, using the regenerative braking to add range. While the 201-horsepower electric motor, battery pack and drive systems were left stock for the race, the interior was stripped and modified with a roll cage, racing seats and supplemental screens for key data like battery temperature. The suspension was thoroughly reworked with rally-style coil-over struts at all four wheels and tubular lower control arms in the front and boxed lower rear links. The radiator was raised several inches to improve approach angles and

cooling capacity, and additional skid plates of 3/8-inch steel added to the undercarriage. Despite the brutal nature of the Baja wilderness, the only damage suffered by the ID.4 was some cosmetic injury to the rear bumper. All of the vehicle’s key power, battery and control systems performed as expected. The ID.4 was raced mostly in “B” level battery regeneration mode with stock traction control turned on. Foust drove most of the race, with writer and off-road racer Emme Hall completing two stages. “This was an exciting test of ID.4 technology because no other productionbased EV had ever entered this event, let alone completed it,” said Scott Keogh, President and CEO of Volkswagen of America. “Congrats to our team for demonstrating that EVs can stand up to extreme environments, and showing how fun electric vehicles can be. The ID.4 could definitely be the Baja Bug for the electric age n ”

While ID.4's electric motor remains untouched from the factory spec, suspension was uprated to deal with tough off-road conditions

Tanner was understandably one happy chappy after getting the car home in one piece

THROWBACK BIG JOBS F

Back in the early 2000s, Volkswagen didn’t just dip its toe in the luxury saloon market with its flagship Phaeton, it knocked the ball well and truly out of the park!

or this month’s throwback we revisit the legendary Volkswagen Phaeton; a refined and uncompromising car that marked VW’s intrepid step into the early 2000’s luxury automotive market. But the Phaeton was no mere dipping of the toe into the high-end pool; it was a bold leap that saw no expense spared. From technology, to interior materials, to paint quality, to drivetrain, Phaeton was designed to stand head and shoulders above even the most well-established rivals. In the late 1990s, Ferdinand Piëch’s time as Volkswagen AG CEO was nearing an end. Rather than quietly fade into retirement, Piëch pursued an ambition of introducing a Volkswagen model to the luxury segment. An early look at the shape that ambition would take was the Concept D sedan Volkswagen brought to the 1999 Frankfurt Motor Show. The

72

Performance VW

Concept D featured a 5.0-litre, direct-injection V10 engine and directly previewed the look of the Phaeton—save for the hatchback element of its design. Just two years later, the Phaeton would enter production, looking to establish itself among other luxury sedans of the day through a combination of superior comfort, technological advancements, and performance from a wide range of engines. Such was Volkswagen’s commitment to the Phaeton, in fact, that an entire facility—the “Transparent Factory” in Dresden—was built especially for its production. At the Dresden factory, the construction of the Phaeton in itself was unlike anything else in the automotive world: components of the luxury sedan would arrive as sequenced deliveries immediately before assembly. Parts and modules would traverse the factory in boxes via a driverless transport system, and an

electric overhead conveyor would bring each Phaeton through the three vertical levels on which it would be assembled. The precision, compartmentalisation, and extraordinarily clean environment of the “Transparent Factory” resulted in truly world-class construction for Volkswagen’s world-class luxury sedan. Initially, the Phaeton came standard with a 3.6-litre V6 engine. Another Piëch project of the day, a 6.0-litre W12 engine, was available as an option. The W engines were just beginning to see their way into production at this time: the Passat had an optional W8, and the W12 available in the Phaeton could be found in new Bentley models or as an option in Audi’s A8 luxury sedan. A V10 diesel option became available in 2003, followed by a six-cylinder diesel and a V8 gasoline engine. 4Motion all-wheel drive was standard issue in W12 Phaetons, and all models featured an advanced

While the future of Volkswagen vehicles might be exciting, sometimes it's important to look at where it all stems from

air suspension, outstandingly comfortable seats, and a draft-free automatic climate control system. Even the air conditioning system on the Phaeton was an achievement. Along with a humidity-monitoring function to avoid the vehicle misting up, the Phaeton W12’s fourzone climate control system was designed to be capable of maintaining a steady interior temperature of 72 degrees Farenheit while the vehicle held a constant speed of 186 mph at an ambient temperature of 122 degrees. The climate control systems, aerodynamics, brakes, suspension, steering system and even wipers were designed to cope with speeds far exceeding the typically-regulated 155 mph. As unlikely as one might be to find themselves requiring such performance, the Phaeton still stood ready to deliver. But the Phaeton found difficulties in breaking through to a status-sensitive American audience. As impressive as it was, a segment crowded with long-established luxury makes and models constricted its success, ultimately driving it from the American market in 2006. Ironically, the Phaeton has since become something of a cult favourite among enthusiasts in the United States, while its sort of fallen by the wayside here in Europe.

Volkswagen’s big luxury car enjoyed much greater popularity within the German domestic market and around the world, especially in China. In fact, the Phaeton was successful enough in its high-luxury aims that a revised version was released for the 2010 model year, offering a 4.7-inch longer “Executive” interior for those who wished to be chauffeur-driven. The already high level of standard equipment expanded to include 4Motion all-wheel drive in all models, along with Continuous Damping Control (CDC) adjustable air suspension, 18-way adjustable electric seats, and a laminated finish to all glass areas. For the first

time on a Volkswagen, the option of Google MapsTM was available on the Phaeton’s satellite navigation system. The success of the Phaeton in the world market continued into the 2010s: A record 7500 were built at the Transparent Factory in Dresden in 2010, and over 60,000 were produced between 2001 and 2011. Phaeton production was discontinued in 2016, as Volkswagen shifted the resources of the Dresden factory toward a focus on electric vehicles. The e-Golf was assembled at the Transparent Factory from 2017 to 2020 and mass production of the ID.3 EV began in 2021.

GOODIE TWO CAMERAS

After months of badgering by his better half, Ell's has finally fitted a Bluetooth adapter to the family Q5, and he threw two dash cams into the mix while he was at it. Who’s a good boy?

or an early model, there’s very little to give away the vintage of our 2009 Q5 except for the lack of Bluetooth connectivity. While there are replacement MMI systems available that do offer Bluetooth, they’re extremely expensive and still look a little dated when installed. The wife had been on at me for some time to find a Bluetooth solution for the car, and after discovering our friends at Kenwood had just released a neat, remote DAB unit (KTC-500DAB) that also acted as a Bluetooth adaptor, it was a no brainer for me, especially at just £79.95. While I was on the Kenwood website I discovered it also sold a pretty tidy looking dash cam bundle (601 Ultimate Pro Driver Bundle), which included an Ultra HD dash cam (DRV-A601W), rear view camera (KCA-R200), plus all hardware needed to rig the kit up and even a 128GB SD card to record all the action. Better still, I bought the kit on offer directly from Kenwood for £249.95 (saving £120). The cameras were something else

my better half had been harping on about for some time, so at this rate I was surely going to wind up in her good books… without breaking the bank, too. The DAB+ unit came with an in-car digital radio antenna (which mounted on the top of the windscreen), an external Bluetooth microphone (which clips in the A-pillar rubber) and a Bluetooth interface unit (which was hidden inside the dash panel, where it was connected to a power supply). It was all super straightforward to instal, and in fact, the hardest part was finding where to actually locate the unit itself. Once rigged up and switched on, we just needed to simply tune it to an FM channel on the car’s factory radio and job done! With hands-free calls, plus the addition of all the regular digital radio stations, this is without doubt the best £79.95 I’ve spent in a long time. Fitting the cameras took a little bit more time, but that was largely because we had to run a power supply from the front of the car to the rear camera. Other than that, it was all relatively straight forward once we’d worked

out where to mount both cameras. The front camera features a wide 3” full colour LCD screen and is crystal clear. As far as we’re away, unique to this camera is the anti-reflection polarising filter, which means you don’t get horrible reflections or glare from puddles. Other neat touches include the magnetic fixing and smartphone viewing app. The other important feature is that the camera keeps recording, even if you have a start-stop car that switches off at traffic lights etc. The Wide Quad HD rear view camera links seamlessly to the front dash cam, offering dual recording and a 180-degree rotational lens, plus an ultra-wide view. For less that £350 I not only brought our trusty old barge up to date, but also gave us as a family far more piece of mind in terms of hands-free phone calls, plus the additional comfort of knowing every journey is being recorded should anything unforeseen happen. Add DAB into the mix (to keep the kids happy), and I’d say it’s a win, win, win situation. SHOUT: Kenwood (www.kenwoodelectronics.co.uk)

LIGHT AT I THE END OF THE TUNNEL Tony upgrades the headlights on his Mk6 with the latest kit from Osram and is wondering why he didn’t do it sooner.

New OSRAM unit (left) looks quite different even when not illuminated

82

Performance VW

I won’t lie, when I first turned my attention to the VW catalog with an eye to scooping up a used but new-to-me Mk6, it was the GTI I had my sights on. The Golf R was awesome but a touch too spendy for my needs and the rest of the range seemed a bit bland and uninspiring, the sporty sophistication of the GTI seemed to hit the spot and tick all the boxes. Well, I got as far as collecting the required currency and even taking a tentative test drive or three... all seemed well until a couple of stern lectures from Volkswagen master mechanics and a rummage through the reference library of reviews littering the web. While the GTI was touted as being more fun to drive than the proverbial barrel of monkeys and the style and build quality got high marks, the general reliability, recall record and tendency to be towed back to the dealer was fair to middling. Now I don't mind spinning spanners now and again and a little fix and upgrade can be a good thing, but I was looking for a reliable daily driver, the car was going to be modified sure enough, but but I’d rather it was by choice not necessity. So there we are, that’s how I ended up with a 2.5 five cylinder five door hatch in my garage, arguably the most reliable Mk6 motor in perhaps the most boring wrapper of the bunch. Being a base model Golf means that the bells and whistles count is not the highest, ordinarily not something I’m too fussed about in a daily driver... I’ll confess to being more of an eyes on the road hands on the wheel kind of driver. One thing that immediately became

apparent though, the very first time the car attempted to negotiate one of California's famous twisty canyons after dark were the pitiful OEM headlights. Poverty spec options had blessed the base model with illumination from the Dickens era; believe me strapping on a brace of crystal chandeliers to the bumpers would have been a marked improvement. The feeble factory headlights were high on the list for an upgrade, but surprisingly replacing the horrendous halogens didn't prove to be as easy as expected. The first stop was trying to improve the stock units with drop-in HID or LED replacement bulbs with the associated bits needed to make the operation work. This plan failed in pretty spectacular fashion with a mix of spaghetti wiring, questionable fitment and a wildly fragmented light beam that not only annoyed oncoming drivers but attracted the long arm of the law. A little more cash provided a host of eBay’s finest replacement headlights, but even though these jobbies came with preinstalled upgraded bulbs, LED and/or HID bulbs, build quality, fitment issues and the fact that the factory electronics refused to play nice with any of them; can you say error code apocalypse?, I decided to keep looking. Enter OSRAM. A German producer and supplier of all things lighting...as well as a good deal of other cool stuff. Having been around for over a hundred years and operating in over a hundred and twenty countries there's a pretty good chance these folks know their business, and after taking a quick glance over their offerings in the automotive headlight department they had my attention.

Removing front bumper made access easier during install

Fortunately, aside from producing a full range of awesome GTI replacement headlights, they are also willing to deal with the lowly base model Golf...result! The OSRAM LED driving XENARC headlights for the MK6 honestly looked too good to be true on paper; State-of-the-art lightguide technology, LED driving XENARC lights with pixel-free optics generating a maximum of light on the road, which means up to 20 metres longer light cone and up to 70% more light than standard headlights with halogen lamps. This translates to way better visibility and more time to react on the darkest of canyon runs. There’s up to 40% whiter light compared to standard headlights with halogen lamps which makes a huge difference in real world conditions... and it looks pretty cool too! All of this sounded like just what I was after but what about the actual install process? Here's the real surprise, these things are literally plug and play... and that’s real plug and play, not the normal cut, hack, bend, twist, bodge and play you get with so many aftermarket “custom fit” parts. Throw in a two year warranty and OSRAM insist upgrading to the ECE-approved LED driving XENARC headlight complies with all legal requirements,

and I was sold. The most involved part of an otherwise simple install is removing the front bumper cover to get to the headlight attaching hardware; you’ll need to whip the grill off to get to some of the bolts on top, or rather four T25 torx that VW like to liberally use everywhere. Once the top end torx are off you can undo a gang of similar T25s holding the under tray and arch liners, then simply detach a couple that actually hold the cover to the car. Roping in a helper is not a bad idea here, the promise of pizza works well, we’ve heard beer works better but we’ll save that experiment for a latter job, take it from me wrestling the bumper cover off without scratching your paint is so much easier as a two man job. Disconnecting the battery and working out a few T30 torx will have the old headlights out and then it’s in with your shiny new OSRAMs. The electrical part of the job is literally connecting the OEM headlight plugs to the back of the new headlights and then connecting two wires (one from each headlight) to the positive pole of the battery... and you’re done! The headlights come with a little red switch on the back that allows you to choose whether you want the indicators

Once connected and powered up, new lights look far more modern

84

Performance VW

to simply flash, or convert to a sweeping strobe effect. I’d love to say that the whole operation was a strictly more lighting safety minded thing, but i’d be lying if I said that the headlight swap wasn't equally about awesome looks. The XENARC headlights transform and update the car a treat, giving the humble MK6 base model Golf a sexy new Mk7 GTI look, we opted for the smoked black edition, but chrome or red stripe GTI editions are also available. Realistically if you know one end of a screwdriver from another, don’t take take too many tea breaks, limit checking your phone every five minutes and don't waste time endlessly looking for tools you only used and put done two minutes earlier, you should be able to handle the complete install in less than two hours. These headlights are great, in fact they are better than great; They’ve been on the car for a few months now and the quality and performance is as good if not notably better than anything OEM VW has to offer, and though they are not the cheapest option on the market, you will be hard pressed to find anything better...at any price. RELOADED

ooking at how rare Golf Rallyes are these days, it’s hard to imagine a time when people would fully customise these cars purely for kicks, but that’s exactly what Kenny Macmillan did back in 2009. And to be fair, we didn’t blame him as the standard cars weren’t particular that good. However, what we loved about Kenny’s was that, while the Scotsman went full-on with his build, externally you wouldn’t really have known, other than the slight reduction in ride height and those classic Work VSXX split rims. Under the hood and inside, however, was a slightly different story! While Kenny chose to retain the 8v G60 motor, it was far from standard. Firstly, the capacity was bored out to 1.9-litres, it had a lightened and balanced bottom end, Schrick baffled sump, Wossner custom 83mm pistons and rods, plus a big-valve head, CNC mated port inlet and smoothing. A full-blend R1+ G-Lader wth 65mm pulley and boost return was fitted, along with a custom Schrick camshaft, SNS chip, JR induction kit, Pipewerx exhaust and a whole host of other go-faster bits. Most of these parts were all hidden out of sight though, so to ensure people knew this motor was rather trick, Kenny and the team at G Werks went for a crackle black finish on the main engine parts, with gold-plated finishings. The result was nothing short of stunning and set the car apart from any other Rally we’d seen. Look more closely and you’ll see those aforementioned Work wheels had gold-plated bolts to match, plus there were gold bells on the uprated 330mm front discs! If the engine bay wasn’t unique enough then Kenny took things to a different level again

inside with the use of Ferrari 599 GTB electric seats with carbon trim. The door cards were then trimmed in carbon and Ferrari Beige Nappa leather to match along with the Momo steering wheel. The dash was then flocked and to carry on the motorsport theme, a CAE shifter was added (finished in black and gold), plus a half rear roll cage, coated in carbon-looked leather. The more you walked around this car the more

“Kenny took things to a whole new level inside with Ferrari 599 GTB seats”

the subtle modifications popped out, like the Audioscape speaker pods, also covered in carbonlook leather, the chrome door locks and goldplated bonnet stay. It was all clever stuff that was in keeping and complementary to the original car. So, almost 12 years on, what happened to the car? Well, luckily we caught up with Kenny on Facebook recently and he was only too happy to spill the beans…

WHERE IS IT NOW?

+ POINTS It’s got to be that crackle black and gold plated engine.

- POINTS Looking back perhaps the steering wheel was a bit OTT.

Well, the good news is, Kenny still has it. The bad news? Yeah, well, it’s in a thousand bits. But (and it’s a big but), there is light at the end of the tunnel. Kenny plans to bring the car back, now he finally came to terms with the fact he needs to pay somebody else to do it, as he simply doesn’t have the time. So why did he take it off the road in the first place? “Well, I took it off the road at the end of the 2009 season, after the Players show, to freshen up a few things, but then I got carried away,” he said. Then he got a call from Jay Mac at Players wanting to buy his engine to put in his own Mk1 Golf. “He offered me the VR6T he was building for his Mk2 project and a deal was done. In hindsight I should have kept the G60, but I fancied more power. Then various things got in the way, and it’s been parked up ever since.” Fast forward to 2021 and Kenny is still going down the VRT route with the hope of a between 400-500bhp, which should be fun. “I’m really looking forward to driving it again, and mostly proving to all my mates that it would indeed live again, having promised them that for over ten years!”

These views are ours and ours only, it’s all for a bit of fun, etc

REWIND 1 YEAR AGO JUNE/JULY 2020 It’s a year since our Stance Special and what an edition it was. With Clay McFarren’s bagged Mk4 up front, the quality stanced rides continued inside with Kenny Stas’ Mk2 Golf 8v turbo and Yamada Takeshi’s killer Jetta Coupe. We also brought you a pair of tastefully modded TCRs and John Mitchell’s amazing 600bhp Corrado. We also chose our ten best static and bagged feature cars, plus looked at the latest wheels for 2020.

5 YEARS AGO JULY 2016 The issue kicked off with Steve Nodarse’s hot-rod inspired Corrado followed by Paul Bird’s stubby Mk2, Vic Nagi’s bagged B8 Avant, Paul Walker’s R32-powered Mk1 Caddy, Stan Kowalski’s tuned Mk6 GTI, Panscraper’s Beetle and finally Kyle Wilinsky’s Mk3 GTI VR6T. We wrapped the issue with a profile on BD Clean, plus event coverage from Early Edition, Euro Jam and Worthersee.

10 YEARS AGO JULY 2011 Edger Tepper’s mind-blowing Mk1 took cover back in 2011 and it’s not hard to see why. Inside the issue we checked out HPA’s awesome Jeep TDI conversion, Rich Witham’s hardcore Mk1 track car, Travis Vanausdal’s timeless Mk4 and Richard Vale’s hillclimb Polo G40. A look behind the scenes of HR Engineering closed the issue nicely.

15 YEARS AGO JULY 2006 Well, what do we see here? Yep, it’s ‘that’ issue: the Oxford Edition Beetle cover What an awesome creation. Inside we also had jochen Belien’s cool mk1 Caddy, Jags Digital’s Mk2, a pair of US Mk3s, Steve Allan and Herbert Riedl’s cool Mk1, with Drew McLaughlin’s Mk4 being the final piece of the puzzle.

We may not have always been so finely polished, but we’ve always been at the forefront of the modded dub scene. ah the good ol’ days…

20 YEARS AGO JULY 2001 One of the most talked about Mk3s ever? It can only be Carl Taylor and Premier’s infamous ‘P2 YOB’. Neil Woods supercharged 20v Mk1 came next, followed by Michael Tonge’s Mk2 G60, Andy Dimishky’s Mk1, and David Markarin’s Mk3 VR6. Dave Morden’s Mk2 G60, a Polo G40 buying guide, and a handful of show reports wrapped things up.
