elma Hopkins, who rose to fame as a member of the singing group Tony Orlando and Dawn before launching a sitcom career (GIMME A BREAK!, FAMILY MATTERS), makes her Y&R debut on June 1 in the role of Denise Tolliver, a private eye who reveals shocking news about Amanda’s past — but she’s been a fan of the show for decades. “YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS became one of my favorites just because the stories were so intriguing, and I knew people that worked there — Marguerite Ray [ex-Mamie], Victoria Rowell [ex-Drucilla], Kristoff St. John [ex-Neil],” she says. “I just got hooked! I mean, I remember when Peter Bergman [Jack] came on. I’ve just watched it for a long time and really enjoyed it and, of course, it became more personal because of people on it that I knew. And when Bryton [James, Devon] came on as a kid, that just really sucked me in even more.” That’s because her own association with James dates back to when they played mother and son on FAMILY MATTERS, a gig James began at the tender age of 3. “I’ve been his pretend mommy for most of his life!” she marvels. And while the prospect of not only appearing on her

favorite soap, but reuniting with James, was appealing to her, it wasn’t an automatic “yes” when Y&R reached out to her about the role of Denise. “I was extremely nervous because they work at a different pace than I’m used to,” she explains. “So I did call Bryton before I said yes, to talk to him about it and ask, you know, if he thought I could handle it without having a nervous breakdown! But after that, I was really excited. It’s a different genre for me, for sure, but I’ve watched the show enough where I felt like I was walking into a family, with people that I know. I know their real names as well as their cast names! I’ve followed them, and I think some of them were surprised by how much I knew about them as people, as opposed to just from watching them on TV for the last 30 years.” When Hopkins reported to the Y&R studio at CBS Television

so much, and watched and loved; I just felt an attachment to her”) and was delighted to expand that list on the days she worked. Topping the list? Eric Braeden (Victor). “I was so excited,” Hopkins gushes. “We got on the elevator at the same time and it took a while before I realized it was him because we’re masked up. But when I realized it, I started babbling like an idiot [laughs]. He was so nice, but he was in a hurry, and I was trying to get in my, ‘I’ve been watching you forever!’ I was thrilled about that. Michelle Stafford [Phyllis], who I lo-o-o-ve, I got a chance to meet her; Christian LeBlanc [Michael], who I love; I met Sharon Case [Sharon]. It was wonderful!” Though they didn’t tape together on their first day, James was there to greet Hopkins. “He was the one I got to hug,” she beams. “I didn’t even think about it, you know? I just grabbed him! Certainly him being there when I first walked in, because he wasn’t in that first scene that I was in, was very com-

City, it was a homecoming of sorts, as she used to film her 1974-76 variety show, TONY ORLANDO AND DAWN, on the premises. “We shot right across from THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS. In fact, it’s THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL stage now. I’ve been back since the show was off, doing different shows — I did WAYNE BRADY, I think I did a HOLLYWOOD SQUARES, stuff like that — but it was weird coming back this time because it was familiar and yet unfamiliar. It’s familiar because I practically park in the same spot I was parking in when I was doing TONY ORLANDO AND DAWN, and it’s different, of course, because they take your temperature before you can get in the building now and you’ve got to go get Covid tests and all that sort of thing. So that part is really different because I was looking forward to just hugging everybody I saw, and you can’t do that anymore! It was kind of surreal. The funny thing was, the elevator is just as slow as it was all those years ago. It actually made me giggle.” The actress has gotten to meet some of her favorite Genoa City personalities in the past (“I had the pleasure, years ago, to meet [the late] Jeanne Cooper [ex-Katherine], who was really someone that I just admired

some butterflies to battle. “It was nerve-wracking,” she notes of getting through her first episode. “But a good kind of nerves, you know? If I hadn’t been nervous, I’d have been worried because this is a new genre for me. I’m not being funny; I’m not doing what I usually do, so it was very important for me to feel grounded in it. Mishael [Morgan, Amanda], and Leigh-Ann [Rose, Imani], my first scene was with them and they were just, ‘You’ll be fine, you’ll be okay.’ ” After, “I felt great because I got through it and I felt good about it — and the director felt good about it, which is even better. But I was still shocked at how it was just like one and done. Like, ‘That’s it? No more? I’m gone?’ I was surprised at how quickly it went and relieved that it went so well and that kind of took that real anxiety out of it for me, so I wasn’t quite as nervous the second show. But I told them, ‘Don’t get carried away [with the amount of dialogue for Denise], because I will come up missing.’ I don’t know how they do all that dialogue! I have great, great admiration for those actors because they do some serious work.” 5

“There’s no way he can be the husband and father he wants to be unless he tells the truth.” believe this was an accident,’ ” reminds Clifton. “But Liam doesn’t buy that, so he believes there is this small space of wiggle room where he’s thinking he may be lucky enough to get the

of his conscience and at the same time, Deputy Chief Baker will see he’s sincere when he admits he did not mean to do it.” However, complications quickly arise. “Liam is not a practical or logical person,” chuckles the actor. “He doesn’t go into this decision to confess thinking about things like, ‘What explains the fact that nobody said anything until now? What explains the fact that the car that ran Vinny over just magically disappeared? What explains the fact that Vinny’s cell phone and wallet are missing?’ Liam is asked questions he was not prepared for because he’s not conniving enough to prepare for those questions.” Liam is then arrested and taken into custody, which is fine by him. “On the outside, it looks like Liam had gotten his life back,” muses Clifton, “But the guilt was preventing him from being happy. He was a shell of a human being, and he’d never really get his life back until he told the truth — and that’s the chance he had to take.” HOWARD WISE/JPI

■ After much soulsearching, Liam confesses to the cops about running down Vinny. “What Liam ends up deciding is the most important variable,” relays his portrayer, Scott Clifton. “If Liam tried to keep this a secret, he would be miserable — and he would end up making everyone in his life miserable, and what kind of life is that? Liam comes to a very clear conclusion: There’s no way he can be the husband and father he wants to be unless he tells the truth.” But Liam does grasp the gravity of crossing Bill, who has been urging him to keep mum. “In terms of worthiness of living for Bill, that is not a variable,” notes Clifton. “You’ve got this black-and-white situation with Bill. The inner psychology of guilt is not a figure in Bill’s calculation. That was the only side of the story Liam was getting, until he confessed to Hope and he finally realized that his dad may be able to shove this down and ignore it and be at peace with himself, but Liam just can’t do that. Liam now faces the reality that he can’t do that. It’s not who he is — and he’s bad at keeping

Y&R: KYLE IS HARRISON’S FATHER It’s Official:

HOWARD WISE/JPI

■ Kyle is on pins and needles as he waits for the results of the paternity test to come back. “I think Kyle is in a bit of, ‘I’m in over my head but it’s time to be a man,’ ” explains his portrayer, Michael Mealor. “It’s very much him deciding who he is and who he is in this moment. This is going to change his entire life for better or for worse, and he’s wrestling to make sure he’s making the right choices.” Ashland comes to the Abbott house, and wants to spend time with Harrison, which doesn’t thrill Kyle. “It pains Kyle,” nods Mealor. “It’s a gut-wrenching thing whenever he thinks about Harrison spending time with Ashland, and them building more of a bond, because I think Kyle is beginning to realize that’s what he wants. He wants that bond. But he knows at the end of the day, Ashland is the father that Harrison knows and that’s what’s best for Harrison.” So, Ashland visits with Harrison while Kyle debates telling Ashland about the paternity test. Ultimately, Kyle keeps mum. “I think he’s growing tired of Ashland swinging his weight around and he really wants to put an end to it and get the respect he deserves,” explains Mealor.

“But he knows that the timing is not right now, because it’s not about him. It would do more harm than good for the people around him if he were to play that card at this moment.” He gets his chance, however, when the test results come back and prove that Kyle is Harrison’s dad. “Kyle is just awestruck; I think he doesn’t really know how to process it,” previews Mealor. “I think he’s really been wanting to say to Ashland, ‘Look, you’ve got nothing here and here are the facts, here are the receipts,’ but when push comes to shove and now it’s happening, I think he’s going, ‘Oh, okay. This is real, I don’t know everything I thought I knew about my thoughts and feelings. I’ve got to go back to square one and go through it all again. Now that I know for sure, I’m really going

to have to sift through this and figure out what I want, what kind of relationship do I want, how do I want to be in this child’s life?’ I think he’s truly shocked because there was always a doubt in his mind, so he’s definitely surprised, and definitely scared and terrified, and his life has officially changed.” Kyle takes great pleasure in telling Ashland about the turn of events, but Ashland isn’t going to go away so easily. “I don’t think Ashland quite understands; it doesn’t make sense to him,” previews Mealor. “To him, he’s going, ‘No, this is a ploy. It’s bull. There is no way this could have happened. He’s my kid.’ So I think Ashland is very dumbstruck in a way and he wants more proof. He wants to investigate it, and fight for this to the bitter end to prove what he believes is his.” 7

DAYS: JAN’S NEW PLAN FOR CHLOE

8

Under My Thumb: Jan (Heather Lindell, r.) instructs Chloe (Bjorlin) to go in for the kill.

How crazy does a person have to be to ask someone to do something like that? Plus, Jan used to just be a bully. And now she has some sort of mental health problem that has gotten worse. There’s nothing she isn’t capable of and it’s easy for her to play these mind games with people and probably revel in it and enjoy it.” Chloe, believing they can use the opportunity to get Jan’s gun away from her, agrees, but Jan gives Chloe a knife instead. When Chloe refuses to kill Claire, Jan realizes that she needs to think of a plan to get rid of them. Jan calls Philip and demands money and a private jet in exchange for Chloe’s safe return. She instructs him not to tell the cops, so he lies to Eli. Later, Philip arrives to rescue Chloe. “It’s a huge amount of relief,” notes the

■ Jan brings Chloe and Claire to the cabin where Claire tried to set Ciara on fire. “This is definitely a scenario of when it rains, it pours,” begins Nadia Bjorlin (Chloe). “Chloe was thinking she was getting rescued from the trunk of a car and it’s, ‘Someone’s going to save me. Oh, look. It’s someone else who hates me and wants me dead.’ It’s a lot to go through for her. At this point, it’s just like, ‘How did I end up here and how are we going to get ourselves out of this mess? And how am I going to get both of us away from this crazy person?’ Claire is one of her best friend’s children. Chloe is not only concerned about herself; she has this child to look after.” Jan is happy to see in the paper that Belle confessed to Charlie’s murder, but is still worried that Claire could reveal that Jan killed Charlie, and instructs Chloe to kill her. “Chloe has internal panic and external panic,” relays Bjorlin. “It’s like, ‘Oh my God, how do I get myself out of this?’ It’s an awful scenario and awful thing to think about. You have this crazy person saying, ‘You have to do this or you’re both dead,’ and Chloe has to think somewhat quickly and be smart about it to de-escalate the situation.

actress. “At this rate, everything is seeming like it’s more grim because Jan has had a gun to Chloe’s head, saying, ‘You’re going to get on this flight with me and if you’re lucky, I don’t shoot your brains out.’ So it’s feeling pretty hopeless, and to see a very familiar face and a loving face that you know is there to protect you and help you is a huge sense of relief.” And could make Chloe see Philip in a different light. “At this moment, Philip is the one who has now come in as her knight in shining armor and acted heroically, and it’s hard for her not to be thankful and think that that’s also kind of sexy and romantic that he wanted to make sure Chloe is okay,” explains Bjorlin. “There’s definitely going to be some push and pull between these characters in the weeks after that.”

■ Dan White is having a blast playing the thorn in “Mike’s” side in Nixon Falls, the slippery Elijah. White, who played a doctor for a day on Y&R in 2016, notes, “This is certainly my first sustained role in daytime TV, so it’s super-exciting. I like to refer to it as the jackpot I hit. When I found out who I was going to be spending my time with” — namely, Daytime Emmy-winners Maurice Benard (Sonny) and Cynthia Watros (Nina) — “I was like, ‘Wow!’ To step into this role with Maurice and Cynthia is just fantastic. Like many people, I watched soaps with my grandma, so I knew Sonny Corinthos as the gangster we all love. I knew that coming in, and that was really exciting. I had heard wonderful things about Maurice’s work ethic and how much he likes to play with other actors. He’s so gracious and it’s been so cool to get a chance to work with him. And Cynthia is so generous, checking in to see if I’m okay, asking me if I want to run lines or discuss the scenes beforehand. She’s made me feel very welcome. She’s just a lovely person. She’s kind and giving and open and gives you a lot of energy in a scene. It’s won-

derful to act with her.” The actor is thrilled that Elijah has turned out to be a central player in the Port Charles expats’ storyline. “I was cast in January and I started shooting the second week of February,” he says. “I had my first two scenes, when Elijah was trying to buy the Tan-O and it being foiled. We find out we’re on hold [to shoot another episode] about 10 days before, and we find out we’re booked about six days before. As soon as I got done [with my first show], I found out I was on hold for two more episodes. The audition said two episodes, maybe more, and I’ve already done episode 16! I’m so happy about it, and I feel like I have my training at CalArts and my wonderful acting coach, Gloria Gifford, to thank. I had a series on Showtime

eral takes! So, stepping [onto a soap] with two big-time actors, it’s definitely been a challenge, but one that was welcome.” Coming from a family of soap fans, White beams, “This has been and continues to be the highlight of my career. My grandma and all my aunties watched [GH]. Every day I walk past my grandma’s picture and I see her smiling. This is exactly what she wanted me to do when I moved out here, and I’m fulfilling that promise. Everybody in my family is so happy, but my daughter, who’s 7 — I’m the voice of the Principal on CLARENCE on the Cartoon Network, and she’s more impressed with the cartoon voice than GH [laughs]. She’ll watch one scene to pacify me, but my fiancée loves it! This success is my family’s success as much as, if not more than, mine. My mom calls me after every show to talk about it. She said, ‘We’ve been waiting for this for a long time!’ The success on this show has meant so much to me, but I think the biggest reward has been the joy that I’ve seen it give to the people I love.” 9

with Sofia Mattsson (Sasha, GH) ■ First of all, fans really seem JI M

to be enjoying Sasha and Brando. Are you a “Brasha” fan, too? “I’m R RE definitely a ‘Brasha’ fan and I’m so N excited that fans seem to like them, too! I love how unconventional Sasha and Brando’s love story is. They also have a lot in common, not only from their experiences with drug abuse but personality-wise, as well. They’re both very fearless, used to taking care of themselves and fiercely protective of the people they love. And neither of them is afraid of teetering on the dangerous side or putting themselves at risk to achieve a greater good. I think they can be a real power couple!” What has it been like to work with Johnny Wactor (Brando)? “Oh, he’s so amazing! I have an absolute blast every time I work with him. Not only is he super-kind, charming and fun to be around but he’s also always very prepared and ready to have fun and play in our scenes. I’m always excited to see what’s next for ‘Brasha’ and I feel very lucky to be paired up with him!” Obviously, her pregnancy by Brando came as a surprise to Sasha. How would you describe how she is feeling about becoming a mom? “On one hand, it’s scary and overwhelming because it’s such a life-changing event that was unplanned for. Sasha was focused on a career and on getting on track after her drug abuse; becoming a mother was not at all on her mind. On the other hand, Sasha is very strong and has always handled anything that’s been thrown her way, so she’s ready to put those feelings aside and buckle up to deal with motherhood.” W

to be excited about the baby as well. Do you think Sasha is relieved that he had such a good reaction to the news? “Absolutely! A baby comes with huge responsibilities and a lot of work, so the fact that he wants to be part of the journey and do his part is really great.” Does Sasha feel closer to Brando as a result of him wanting to be involved in the pregnancy and the baby’s life? “Yes, I think the fact that they skipped a couple of usual steps in a relationship and had to dive into serious and real stuff so soon has made them grow closer faster. But even so, they’re still just getting to know each other and have a lot to figure out when it comes to who they are to one another and what exactly this means for them as a potential couple.” Michael and Willow have put their romantic relationship on hold given Chase’s illness, but how do you think Sasha would feel if the two of them went public? Would it be hard for her to see them together? “I think at this point Sasha has dealt with the fact that she and Michael are over and even though it was hard and ended with some ‘what-if’s’, she’s started to move on just as much as Michael has. So I don’t think it would be hard in the sense that she wishes she was still with Michael. It definitely might be a little awkward at first, but I hope that for the sake of her friendship with both Michael and Willow they can move past that awkwardness and stay friends.”

Q Bryton James (Devon) was thrilled to welcome his former FAMILY MATTERS mom, Telma Hopkins, to Y&R, where she will play the role of Denise. Reports James, “I found out about it when Telma actually called me and said, ‘Hey, they are offering me a small little part, and I want to just make sure that I’m able to handle it,’ because she had heard so many stories about how fast-paced we are and how much dialogue they give us sometimes. She was a little nervous about it and I told her, ‘You can’t say no! You have to take the part!’ I told her I would hold her hand and walk her through everything that she needed, just like she did me 30 years ago on FAMILY MATTERS.” Having Hopkins on set “was incredible,” the actor enthuses. “It’s something I never thought about or expected to happen again, to step on stage with her. I was 3 ½ years old when we first met! To be on a soundstage with her and to share that again was an incredible feeling that I’ll never forget. There’s just so much history. I’m grateful to the writers and CBS and the show for making it happen.”

The actor made good on his promise to show Hopkins the ropes, and led her on a studio tour. “It started probably up in hair and makeup, where I got to show her the best part: the schoolroom,” he says. “The studio teacher, Linda Stone, who has been with YOUNG AND RESTLESS since before I got there, was my studio teacher on FAMILY MATTERS, from 3 years old on, which was an insane coincidence. So I got to show Telma that Linda was there and make that connection. I showed her around the studio, showed her around the sets, showed her how to get to our famous commissary to enjoy some lunch.” James gives high marks to Hopkins’s Y&R work. “She was fantastic! Her first day, she had some nerves — her words, not mine — but you wouldn’t have been able to tell. She was a pro, as always, and I can’t wait for the fans to see her.”

Barbara Niven (ex-Liz, ONE LIFE TO LIVE) will also appear in the project, which is currently filming in Vancouver and will air this summer. “I’m so excited to revisit Hannah Swensen and to again work with Cameron and Barbara on these fun stories that combine romance with intrigue,” said Sweeney in a statement. “The fans have been so vocal in their love of these characters, and it’s exciting to be bringing them back to life and to return to Hannah’s bakery where it all began.” In the new mystery, Hannah (Sweeney) and Mike Kingston (Mathison) enjoy finally being engaged while still managing their busy careers. However, a murder at Hannah’s gym may complicate their wedding plans as Hannah’s need for sleuthing again impacts Mike’s investigation. HANNAH SWENSEN MYSTERIES is produced by Sweeney, Craig Baumgarten and Lighthouse Pictures. The series is based on the Hannah Swensen Mysteries series of books by Joanne Fluke and was previously called MURDER, SHE BAKED.

Plots Pr Kate reveals to Dr. Snyder that she’s faking her condition, and is neither blind nor suffering from amnesia. “Dr. Snyder is a questionable character himself,” points out Lauren Koslow (Kate). “And he kind of gets a little suspicious of her because he comes in and examines her and there doesn’t seem to be any problem. So she pretty much says, ‘Fine, I’m not blind and I remember everything,’ and then blackmails him to keep her secret, and he’s willing to do it. Turns out, he had been kind of an iffy character and had problems with the hospital board, where they almost removed him, so she pretty much says to him, ‘I can get you removed, so you better keep this secret.’ So he goes along with it, which definitely helps. People like Philip come in to see her and she has the doctor’s backing.” Kate’s goal? To make things harder for a reunited Gabi and Jake. “She goes through hell with Kristen and the entire Kill Bill:

time, she believed in Jake because he professed his love, and she was very loyal, so then to wake up in the hospital room and hear the two of them together discussing their future together, just in that moment, she’s thinking, ‘Hell, no,’ ” explains Koslow. “It’s really duplicitous behavior in her opinion. I think that is what she immediately feels. The way she sees it is, ‘No, you don’t get your happy ending so quickly. You need a little suffering. I’ve been suffering, so you’re going to suffer, too.’ ”

Before Liam goes to the station to confess to Vinny’s murder (see page 6), Bill visits his son and Hope. “Bill comes over to the cabin and has a very realistic talk with them about what could happen, and Hope knows ultimately he’s not entirely wrong,” sighs Annika Noelle (Hope). “Liam could be locked up and taken away from his family, and so she does see the real14

YOUNG AND RESTLESS No Charges For Chelsea Michael visits Chelsea and reveals that the judge ruled her case not guilty by reason of insanity. He adds that she will not serve jail time, but will remain at the facility, and her case will be re-evaluated on an ongoing basis, with periodic reports from her doctor. “While Chelsea is relieved that the judge ruled that she’s not guilty by reason of insanity, she is more focused on the fact that she is being punished and considered insane while Biding Her Time:

istic aspect of that. However, knowing Liam, he’s going to be a shell of a person until he feels he has done the right thing, and clears his conscience and takes ownership of what he did. Hope wrestles with the ‘scared straight’ talk that Bill gives them, but in her heart of hearts, she does believe that turning himself in is the right thing to do.” After his confession, Liam is arrested and Hope blasts Bill, blaming him for the sordid scenario. “Hope realizes that Bill is the catalyst for everything

Adam is on the outside scot-free,” says Head Writer/Co-Executive Producer Josh Griffith. “Michael shows concern when Chelsea continues to blame Adam for provoking her to retaliate against him.” Victor visits next, and Chelsea wonders what he wants. “Chelsea is surprised by Victor’s visit,” notes the scribe. “Victor reminds Chelsea that she must keep up appearances if she expects their plan to work. Victor makes it very clear that if she doesn’t cooperate, he has the power to make sure her stay at the facility becomes a permanent one. Chelsea keeps her guard up with Victor but his words encourage her to continue to ‘play the game’.” Chelsea then learns that the restraining order against Adam has been lifted and he can see Connor. “Chelsea is furious,” says Griffith. “Chelsea feels it’s completely unfair that Adam gets to spend time with Connor while she is stuck in the facility once again. She believes that Adam has outsmarted her, for now. However, Chelsea will spend her time wisely as she works to get released and plot her next move against Adam.” that went wrong that night and fully holds Bill accountable for putting Liam in this situation,” states Noelle. “Liam was unconscious and wasn’t even aware of what happened after he hit Vinny that night, so Hope finds a scapegoat in Bill, and that’s where she focuses her anger and her hurt. She places the blame on Bill. It’s ironic that Bill and Hope, despite their many differences, are fiercely protective of their loved ones. They go about things in a different way, but they both want what’s best for Liam.” 15

future watch DAYS’s executive producer, Ken Corday, reflects upon the show’s two-year pickup By Stephanie Sloane Q Soap Opera Digest: Congratulations on the pickup! How do you feel now that you know the show will remain on the air until September 2023? Ken Corday: Thank you. I feel a lot of relief. The cast was thrilled. We needed this. We

a little love. Digest: What did it mean to you to get a twoyear pickup? Corday:

eight shows a week is arduous and the crew is pretty much done after three or four weeks of that, and so is the cast. And we’re able to plan for the next 24 months and beyond, and that’s a huge bonus, especially budgetarily. In two years, we’ll see what happens. Right now, I’m going to focus on the foreign sales of the show, because that’s in need of a little attention and

about what to watch next year. Digest: Do you do things differently now that you know you have two years as opposed to one year? Corday: this gives me the opportunity to do that. Digest: Very few shows on the air have the distinction of saying that they’ve been on for 57 and 58 seasons, which you will have at the end of this extension. How does that feel? Corday: My dad [Creator Ted Corday] didn’t think it would last a year or two

swinging in and out every day and that’s great. The show is looking more populous again. We’re seeing more extras, we’re seeing more scenes, longer scenes, scenes with five people, which we couldn’t afford to do the first few months coming back. Shooting eight a week does get us ahead. We’re banking five or six shows every month to get ahead. Digest: Have things become more second nature with the way you’re operating? Corday: It became a more facile environment to work in. People come in early for testing and it became the new normal, a very expensive new normal, but safety protocols have to be in place, number one; we want people to feel safe and they do. The work environment is very controlled and very safe and the guilds are happy and county health is happy. But as people get vaccinated and we continue to pull out of this horrible time, the future looks good. When we speak in six months, it won’t be the same as it is now. When we speak in a year, hopefully we’ll be back where we were before March 2020. Digest: How did it feel for you to gather on set and see your DAYS family and how happy they were about the news? Corday: Better than ever. It was a wonderful time to be able to celebrate, and to do it coming out of what’s been the most difficult time to celebrate. So it’s wonderful. I probably spoke too long but I didn’t really care at that point in time [laughs]. Too much time had passed without the occasion. Digest: What do you say to the fans who watch and watched through the pandemic? Corday: I’m grateful to everyone who watched on network or on Peacock. The future looks really rosy now that we’ve secured this pickup and we know there’s a longer run for the show. We’re going to be a little bit more daring, and hopefully do 앮 even better than we’ve done before.

“It’s nice to get a little love.”

Digest: Because of your production schedule, you were able to air all original episodes during the pandemic, which brought you up-to-date. Where are you today? Corday: We’ve gotten ahead again, thank goodness, because we’ve only taken two weeks off at Christmas and we really needed that. Now, we’re taping the shows that will air mid-September and I’m reading shows that will air Halloween. Never stop the writers from writing. Digest: Not all shows can do that. Why has it worked for you? Corday: We had no choice. One, coming back on September 1, the days were shorter. The show had to be written a little more carefully. We had to be careful with how many people were in scenes, with how expansive the show could look, minimize things, and after getting used to that for a couple of months, we’re able to start expanding, and now I’d say we’re back to our normal amount of people on sets

and he never saw a year, and my mom [Creator Betty Corday] was amazed that it got to 25 by the time she retired, and here we are 30-plus years later. I said to the cast five years ago, “Let’s stop worrying about seasons 53 and 54; let’s focus on 60.” And that’s a hell of a milestone, and it will be. Digest: How do you feel about the current state of the show? Corday: The state of the show is wonderful right now. I’m thrilled with it. What we have planned coming out of the Olympics is great. It all starts with Mr. [Ron] Carlivati [head writer]. It’s nothing without him, and we’re certainly on a roll. Rare Wonder RED HELENITE RING

Man and Earth Create a Rich Red Rarity

Raised from the fiery depths of a volcano, the bold and beautiful elegance of Helenite was first discovered after the eruption of Mount St. Helens, and this exquisite stone was created from the ashes of its namesake. When salvage workers found that the heat from their torches was turning the melting volcanic rock and ash into vibrant colors, Helenite was born, the rarest of which is a fierce red color. This accidental collaboration between man and Earth has given the world a sparkling stone that rivals the rich beauty of the finest red gemstones like rubies and garnet. Now it makes its Bradford Exchange debut in this visually stunning statement ring. Our “Rare Wonder” Red Helenite Ring is crafted from solid sterling silver, enhanced with a fine layer of rhodium plating for maximum shine and beauty. This rare treasure features a bold red Helenite stone at the center in a highly fashionable cushion-cut. Over two carats in size, the stone sparkles with a breathtaking shade of red. A total of 6 genuine white topaz gemstones, in round and princess-cut settings, delicately adorn both sides of the band for even more mesmerizing dazzle. ■ There are three kinds of crazy on soaps: funny, scary and stupid. Aim for the first two. ■ Y&R’s Michael Baldwin used to be stupid crazy. He sexually harassed Cricket, stalked her, tunneled into her apartment, and forced himself on her. (Paul rescued her.) He was slowly redeemed with a lengthy prison sentence and by donating a kidney to Danny Romalotti. Chelsea goes back to being funny crazy when she’s sprung from the loony bin. ■ DAYS’s loony Jan is stupid crazy, popping in to frame Belle for murder so she could “have” Shawn. And nothing is funnier than Bonnie making fun that her dream is to become “Jan Brady”. Kristen used to be funny crazy (those teeth flying across the room!) but all the latex masks and convenient syringes in her pocket have made her preposterous crazy. And I’m not buying Ava’s sudden turn from killer/kidnapper to moony-eyed ingenue, either. Crime with no payment attached — or at least a little humor — shouldn’t pay. Give me funny crazy Sami Brady every time. Her latest scheme to convince Chloe that Lucas had a brain tumor (to keep Chloe from Brady per Kristen’s blackmail instructions) was pure comedy, right down to Lucas insisting he wanted to go to Antarctica to “die”. Chloe: “You want to spend your last few months in the cold?” Lucas: “I love penguins. Want to join me?” Yes! ■ It’s always better to err on the side of funny crazy, like B&B’s Quinn. Even her crimes are entertaining — stabbing Bill with his own sword necklace, pushing Ivy into the Seine, and now adultery (sorry, Eric). A common mistake is creating a charac-

Tanner Novlan (Finn, B&B) “Mine was the first day and they changed all the dialogue in the rehearsal. I remember rifling through my papers being like, ‘Should I write this down?’ and they were like, ‘Okay, we’re going to tape.’ I thought, ‘This is the flexible part that [wife] Kayla [Ewell, ex-Caitlin, B&B] talked about.’ ”

Kimberly J. Brown (“Chloe”, GH; ex-Marah, GUIDING LIGHT) “Probably the first time they wrote a big, crying breakdown for Marah, where she talks to [her father] Josh about how she was scared he was going to stop loving her because she told a lie. I had worked on it a lot and by the end of it, Robert [Newman, ex-Josh] and I were both crying. They called, ‘Cut!’ and I remember thinking, ‘But I want to do it again! That was fun!’ ”

Emily O’Brien (Gwen, DAYS) “Having to do the lingering looks at the end of a scene without being able to respond. Or someone talking out and someone is behind them. That’s not real life, that’s soap life.”

GH’s Jon enjoyed his on-screen session with Nancy.

Jon Lindstrom (Kevin, GH) was thrilled to play a prominent role in the show’s recent Alexis-centric episode. “It was a lot of fun to do,” he reports. “We actually did a table read of that script — me, Nancy [Lee Grahn, Alexis], Phideaux [Xavier], the director, Kelly Monaco [Sam] came up. Two of the producers, Michelle [Henry] and M.K. [Weir] were there, and I think another actor. At the table read, we tweaked things and played with the material a little bit just to make sure that by the end of it, you kind of came away with that Ordinary People moment, that moment of discovery. It was a great show to

We’ve never had the opportunity to really dig in, so it was great to have a chance to actually work with Nancy because I think a lot of her as an actress. I think she’s incredibly talented and resourceful and can really think on her feet, and that’s gold, especially in a medium like this, where you’ve got to crank it out. She really does a remarkable job, so it was a welcome change for me to have some new blood and energy to work off of, and doubly so, coming from someone I’ve known for so long and that I like and we’re friends.” 40

you.” He was really, really understanding. And then I got home to a gutted washroom and I told my husband, “Yes, I have to do this crazy surgery, and when I get out of surgery, I’m going to have to literally stare facedown for seven days in a special chair and I only get breaks every hour for 10 minutes.” So it was an interesting road to recovery. It was pretty intense. But then I got through it and everything was good. Digest: Seven days must have felt like a long time. Morgan: Yeah, seven days with two kids was really interesting. I was told it could be anywhere from a week to three weeks, and I was really thankful that it wasn’t three weeks, especially with my neck because I had broken my neck in a car accident and I had spinal surgery done, so just having my neck in that position was interesting. I thought I’d be able to sit there longer. I was like, “Oh yeah, it’s like a massage chair. It will be really relaxing.” No, it was not relaxing at all. It was very uncomfortable. But I read a lot of books. I did a lot of soulsearching. I meditated a lot. I really tried to take advantage of the time and look at it for the best it could be. And I looked at it as I really wanted to go to the spa for the longest time and then the pandemic hit and then you couldn’t do it, so I thought, “I’m just going to look at this as my quiet time.” And the kids couldn’t bug me because it was, “Mommy’s in the chair. You have to leave Mommy alone.” At the end of it, I think I came out feeling a lot stronger and energized to get back to the things I wanted to do. I’m part of the 5 a.m. club now, so I wake up at 5 a.m. every morning. It was something I wanted to do. It got me on schedule in this weird way because I had to schedule my day out to put my eye drops in, to do this, to do that and every hour I only had 10 minutes, so I literally had to time out what I could do. I was like, “Okay, I have 10 minutes. I can take a shower. I can change my clothes. I have to put my glasses on....” So everything became really regimented and because of that, I just decided, “I want 43

oap Opera Digest: How scary was it to find out that you had a problem with your eye? Mishael Morgan: It was really scary and a little overwhelming because at the same time, my husband and I had decided we were going to renovate our bathroom. So, our bathroom was completely gutted. I had no symptoms whatsoever. I just went to a regular optometrist. I just wanted to get my contacts. I even wanted to find a way to weasel out of the exam, but the universe wouldn’t let me. So I went to the regular optometrist and she saw something and she said, “I’m going to send you to a specialist just in case. It may be nothing, but just in case.” I get my eyes checked pretty regularly because I do have a high prescription, but this had been the one time that I had maybe a two-year gap because I had just had my daughter. But I didn’t have any reason to think there would be any issues, and I thought if they did find something, it was probably what my sister had a few years earlier, a mild little retina tear. She went in and out in one day. I wasn’t going to be shooting until Friday, so I thought, “Maybe they can get me in and out this week, and we’ll be done.” And then I go to the doctor and he was like, “Yeah, so your retina is definitely detached and it’s close to the center of your eye and if it detaches any more, you could lose vision, you can go blind, so we have to take care of this right away and we have to get you into surgery in a day or two.” First of all, I don’t even have my contacts in or my glasses on, so I can’t even see the man who was telling me all of this because he’s sitting on the other side of the room, and I’m like, “This doesn’t even feel like real life.” But luckily, they were able to get in there and do the surgery. I called Tony [Morina, executive producer] right away and told him what was going on so he was very understanding. I was the one who was like, “Oh, my God, my storyline. I’m so bummed I’m not going to be able to do it. What’s going to happen?” and he was like, “Mishael, stop thinking about work. You have to go and take care of

Patch It Up: Morgan shared this shot on social media during her recovery.

would be up on my feet and ready to go in two weeks, so maybe they could just push some of the shows. I was trying to work it out in my head that maybe it would be okay. And then when they said that they had to do the temporary recast, I felt really sad for a second, but I said a prayer. I think everything happens for a reason, and at the end of the day, I’m so lucky to be okay and my kids are healthy and safe and there’s nothing to be upset about. I think I just wanted to know that somehow this was meant to be and whoever was taking over my role would appreciate it because I put so much work into this role so far, and I just want it to go to somebody who can do it justice and appreciate the opportunity, even though it’s just for a short period of time. And then it felt like it was just a couple of hours later that Karla texted me and sent me the sweetest text and told me that she was going to be stepping in for me and I was so thankful. And when she wrote me back, she told me she was 25 weeks pregnant and was hoping for something like this and really needed something like this right now and she was so grateful that it had come around to her and she’s going to do her best to do it justice. It

to become a little more regimented. I want to get organized with the kids and be able to get up a little bit earlier so I get a head start on the day,” so it forced me a little bit to do that. And because I was off work for three weeks, I really got into the habit. Now that I’m back at work, I feel so proud of myself because my whole life has kind of changed for the better. And that’s what I love about times in my life like this; I have always found them to be very inspiring and [they] pushed me into my next phase of adulting. Digest: Were you in pain? Morgan: I was in pain but I think I have a high threshold for pain. Anytime I had pain, I thought about the fact that I gave birth to two babies with no drugs and that just made me kind of relax, just reminding myself of the three days I was in labor with my son. I can get through anything. So it was pretty mild pain. I wasn’t struggling or anything. Digest: Are you as good as new or is there still healing? Morgan: Still a little bit of healing. I would say I’m at 98 percent. Visually, I look pretty much healed, but there’s still some healing going on inside. Digest: How did you feel about Karla Mosley (ex-Maya, B&B) taking over the role temporarily? Morgan: That was a bit of a hard pill to swallow at first. It wasn’t when I heard about Karla. I had just gotten out of surgery and then Tony contacted me personally and told me that unfortunately, they’re going to have to do a temporary recast because the story was already going, and my story was starting to get intertwined with other storylines, and Victor had just gotten introduced into my storyline, and it just kind of created a situation where they couldn’t back off the story now because it was already connecting to everybody else’s story. I kind of knew that and understood it, but I was hoping that I

was everything that I needed. I was so grateful in that moment. And as soon as I heard that and as soon as we chatted, all my worries just melted away and I just felt so content and happy, and I could really focus all of my energy back on my healing. Digest: She’s a fan of yours. Morgan: She is so sweet. I think we had a random, five-minute conversation at a Daytime Emmys years ago at the bar having a drink, and we’d see each other in the hallway every now and then and we’d say hello, but we really didn’t know each other very well. And then after she left, she left me the sweetest card and then we texted a few more times and we’re committed to getting our kids together and maybe doing a beach day or something. We’re going to do that soon, so I think this has created a really great beginning of a new friendship. It was weird to think about it this way, but it’s very intimate to play a character, and then to think that she stepped in for my character, in this weird way, I feel it’s bonded us and I’m excited to start our new friendship, so we’ll see. Digest: Did you tune in to watch her? Morgan: No, because I literally went from recovering to right back into the show and we just hit the ground running. As soon as I started back, that was the week she started airing, so I was playing catch-up. I’m hoping to get sent a couple of episodes and I’ll get to

take a look. It’s weird. I had this thing where I didn’t know if I wanted to see her in the role or not. I didn’t want it to change how I came back and attacked the character, but I also wanted to know what she did at the same time, so that if she played a scene differently than I anticipated that at least I would factor that in to what I was going to be doing when I came back. But I don’t know, it just didn’t work out. But I felt really happy that she was able to step in. She is so seasoned and she has been in this world for a long time, so I had so much faith that she would do an amazing job and it seems like she has. Every single person has told me that she’s been awesome. When I was talking to Bryton [James, Devon], he was like, “For somebody to step in and say the amount of dialogue that you say, Mishael? You’re not like every other character — your character talks and talks and talks.” So he said she came in and there were chunks and chunks and she just knocked it out of the park and she was able to get through it all. Digest: How were your co-stars through this? Did you hear from them? Morgan: I did. I heard from a lot of them while I was away. But the one that I was so shocked to hear from was actually Eric Braeden [Victor]. I don’t work with Eric that often, but he has personally come up to me a few times and told me that he’s really enjoyed my work. We had a scene and Karla had stepped in and he called me that day, just concerned about what was going on with me. He just wanted to let me know that I’m definitely missed and don’t worry about being replaced, you’re not replaced, and I was like, “Thank you so much.” He was so sweet and that was one call that I was not expecting. And I was super-flattered. Digest: Who would have thought that when you were growing up and watching Y&R that you would have Victor Newman calling you personally? Morgan: That’s exactly what I was thinking when he was talking to me! I’m like, “Who would have thought that Victor Newman would be calling me on my personal cell phone in real life?” 앮

Q wrong. Please let me know if I’m right. Thank you. I never miss an issue of your magazine! Melissa J., via email A In 1990, video footage revealed that Kayla

had fought with Steve’s ex-wife, Marina Toscano, and threatened her. Marina was then killed, and when Abe and Roman reviewed the tape, they were forced to arrest Kayla for her murder. The true culprit turned out to be Marina’s sister, Isabella, who had blocked out the incident. Since it was self-defense, Isabella was exonerated and Kayla was cleared.

BULLY FOR HER

PHOTOS: HOWARD WISE/JPI

Am I confused or didn’t Y&R just do an entire storyline about how bullying is wrong? Which is making me wonder why every single scene Sally is in has characters being extremely cruel to her. I could be misremembering things, but isn’t what spurred all this hate is that Sally called Kyle attractive and she wanted the same job as Summer? It makes Phyllis, Summer and Kyle look insecure, petty and exactly like the villain they want Sally to be. But

I think we’re meant to be rooting for them? Courtney Hope is a great actress, and Sally is such a fun character. I really hope the writers give her an ally soon! It’s gotta be exhausting listening to people tell you how awful you are day in and day out! Even just watching it on a TV screen is starting to make me uncomfortable. Amanda, via email

FAMILY TIES

I simply adored the very sweet Ned and Brook Lynn scenes on the May 10 episode of GH. I loved watching Ned bond with his daughter and singing the beautiful lullaby to his “grandchild”. Loved the song he sang in those scenes. It was a very sweet and beautiful song. It’s always a good day when Wally Kurth gets to sing. Ned “Courtney Hope is a great needs to sing a lot actress, and [Y&R’s] Sally more. I did like the is such a fun character. nod to Ned/Lois’s I really hope the writers history when he give her an ally soon!” talked about doing 68

the same thing when Lois was pregnant with Brook Lynn. I really wish Brook Lynn was pregnant; it’s heartbreaking she’s lying to her father. Ned deserves to be a real grandfather to his own grandchild. Wally Kurth and Amanda Setton did a wonderful job with those scenes; I love these two so much. They bring so much heart and fun to the Ned/Brook Lynn relationship. It’s time to bring Ned back under the Quartermaine roof so he can watch and protect his loved ones. Anji, via email

SWITCHING COURSE After two years of patiently waiting for Adam and Sharon to reunite on Y&R, the recent turn of events has come off as bizarre. There have been many times where couples have been teased and quickly dropped, but for “Shadam”, this makes zero sense. Since Adam returned in 2019, it has been all about Sharon. She has been his light in a dark world where he is treated as an

everyday villain. Sharon has put her love for Adam above Rey. Rey himself has seen the signs for over two years that Sharon’s connection to Adam will always be bigger than the feelings she has for him, to the point that he wanted to go to therapy and eventually moved out. Adam made Sharon aware of his strong feelings. Suddenly, Adam has this epiphany dream and realizes he needs to let his queen go, and Rey finally decided he wants to reunite with Sharon? This is what you call bait writing and stringing fans along; more specifically, the Sharon and Adam fans. The issue with Sharon and Rey is that they have not been established as a stable couple separate from Adam for two years. We have not seen any signs that Sharon loves Rey as any more than just a “safe choice” that

her family will approve of. Rey is made to look idiotic because he dealt with all of this in the past with Mia, but he’s suddenly dropping his worry to reunite with Sharon? Huh? All it took was a picture of Sharon and Adam kissing to give Faith, Chloe, Rey and Chelsea more story, so to end something that buzzworthy for something safe is inexplicable. Tia C., via email

HOT, HOT, HOT The surprise pairing of Quinn and Carter is a brilliant move by B&B. It makes perfect sense that these two hooked up. With both of them hurting from their prospective relationships, this unexpected affair makes perfect sense. And it doesn’t hurt that their chemistry together is on fire; Quinn and Carter are burning up my TV! B&B,

you found a gold mine of story to tell with this secret affair, and pulling Shauna into this to cover their tracks makes it an even greater layered story to tell. Please, B&B, keep giving us more of this sexy, hot affair, with an explosion of potential fallout keeping me on the edge of my seat! Nancy W., Lafayette, LA

AROUND THE DIAL T. Wright emails, “I like the pairing of Jason and Britt on GH. They have a great deal of chemistry. Plus, it’s time that Jason and Sam split. Sam and Dante are a good match. Let Anna and Valentin get together, and Elizabeth and Finn.” Pamela J. in Noblesville, IN, adds, “My new favorite ‘couple’ on GH is Maxie and Brook Lynn. They’re hilarious! When GH wrote out Maxie’s partner in crime/ best friend, Lulu, I was not only disappointed, I despaired of them finding any scene partner who would fill Lulu’s designer shoes. Now that Maxie and Brook Lynn have formed an unholy alliance, I’m glued to the screen and can’t wait to see where the story goes. GH’s idea to pair them in story is pure genius. Kudos to the actresses, writers and producers!”... Deborah G. writes, “I 100 percent agree with P.S. in your

sneaking out of the hospital on DAYS. P.S. asked if she got an Uber. My question is, as Jan was supposedly a comatose patient in the ICU, who removed her IV and Foley catheter? When she left and came back, who reinserted her IV and Foley catheter? So insulting to us nurses. Especially right now with COVID-19. That’s just wrong for my fellow nurse heroes!” ... S.S. in Palm Coast, FL, praises, “Kudos to the writ-

ers of the 5/13 episode of Y&R, which was written in an outstanding way. Also, to the set designers that made the set dark and foreboding with life-size chess pieces. Very imaginative. Adam’s dream episode was one of the best I’ve seen in a while, and I just had to comment about it.”

YOU SAID IT! “Melissa Claire Eagan’s performance of Chelsea’s downward spiral was excellent. She totally pulled it off. It was the best of anything on Y&R of late and it was amazing. Great job, Melissa!” — Mary D., via email
