This issue would normally be our holiday special, but some of those trips we once took for granted are sadly in limbo. But Covid cannot cancel summer and so, instead, we’ve made it a celebration of glorious style buys that will look just as brilliant on a beach break as in your back garden. As what we’ve realised over the past year is how to adapt and that good things are worth the wait. Our cover star, Foxes, took a three-year hiatus from music to reset and she’s back stronger and more self-assured. Read her story and how she’s carving out a career worth pausing for. Plus, the small fashion brands to support, how to pimp your balcony and the products the beauty experts are packing. Enjoy!

huge passion for fashion and clothes.” Fairly recently her mum, Jane Allen, opened a vintage clothing stall on Brick Lane, where Lou sometimes helps out. “Yeah, it’s cool. She’d always wanted to and plucked up the courage. I’m really proud of her for doing that.” What is her favourite vintage find personally, we ask? “There are quite a few things, I love a charity shop hunt; but the best is a Chanel bag I found in Winchester for £4. I felt really bad actually and ended up paying more for it.” Growing up, she tells us, she admired Cyndi Lauper’s style. “I love character and colour clashing, so I used to love her, but I also took a lot of inspiration from film characters, Mathilda in Léon and also a lot of Japanese anime, which sounds mental but they do the best colour combinations and the outfits are quite mad.” Now she loves Acne Studios, Supreme and Ganni, “I’ve only worn tracksuits for a year now,” she laughs. Now aged 32 with a new album, how does she feel she has changed? “A lot! I’ve grown up and now feel a lot more comfortable in my own self. I feel more grounded, obviously when you’re young, well I was, kind of up in the clouds. Now I feel I can stand in my own power a bit more.” ■ Go to hellofashion.com to watch our cover shoot video

LOU’ S WO R L D What’s on your playlist right now? I try to listen to as much new music as possible – so at the moment there is Muna, which is an amazing band who play their own instruments. Also a band called Sault, then SG Lewis, Bicep, Mogwai, Loyle Carner, Waxahatchee and Georgia, which is brilliant. Can you describe what you are wearing today?
Because of lockdown, I live in tracksuits, I can’t deny it. This black one is Pangaia, they are sustainably made and are quite fun as well, because they’ve got some great pastel colours. I’ve tried to kind of snazz them up a bit by wearing mules with them. I probably look nuts, but I think that’s what’s good about east London. You can. What was the last text you sent?
I’m finishing the album at the moment, so I did actually send a verse for a new song to the producer I’m working with. It could be a lot worse, there are a lot of strange conversations happening on my phone. How has your lockdown been?
It’s been up and down; I think it’s been the same for everyone. You have good and bad days. I’ve done a lot of checking in on friends. I’ve felt weirdly more connected with a lot of people and have started talking to some I hadn’t spoken to in a really long time. So in that way it is nice. But I think we’re all a bit sick of it now. It’s been like a rollercoaster that I want to get off – get me off! Where is the first place you’ll head post-lockdown?
A beer garden with friends, I can’t wait. I don’t care if it rains, I’ll be there with an umbrella.
Can you tell us about your pet dog?
He’s called Hiro and he lives up to his name. It was my little niece who actually named him Tiny Hiro. I thought he was a toy cockapoo and then he grew and grew and grew. And I ended up with a proper medium to large dog – there’s more to love. What was the last holiday you took?
Italy, which is probably my favourite place in the world. I went to Lucca in the north. And the last box-set you watched? The Sopranos – series one to six. Describe your perfect day...
Waking up with the sun shining with someone I love and loads of laughing. Then having all my friends around making cocktails and dancing in the kitchen. The Dioriviera pop-up is at Selfridges from 3 June-31 June

For singer-songwriter Louisa Rose Allen, better known as Foxes, writing music in her bedroom has led to international success. efore taking a threeyear “gamechanging hiatus” from music in 2017, Louisa (Lou) Rose Allen had spent eight years consumed in her artist persona, Foxes. In that time she released two studio albums, Glorious and All I Need, collaborated with Zedd on Grammy-winning Clarity, released six UK top 40 singles and wrote lyrics for Rudimental, Kygo, Sub Focus and Giorgio Moroder. “The three years definitely happened for a reason. I needed to take a pause to realign my life – what I was doing and why. I can’t describe how it is to be back, but I’m now properly in the game again.” Lou was just 19 when things quickly started to accelerate. Her sister, Holly, had persuaded her to abandon the beauty therapy course she’d enrolled on in her hometown of Hampshire, move to London and sleep on her sofa to pursue her ambition of becoming a musician. She began doing open-mic nights and using SoundCloud to upload demos. “A sync company somehow heard some of my very early tracks and ended up using them on the last series of Gossip Girl. I’d been a really massive fan of the show and remember thinking, this is just mental. In a kind of underground blog way, my music had travelled to America from my bedroom. It was such an unexpected thing; I signed a major record deal with Sony very soon after that.” But the big gamechanger came when German DJ and record producer Zedd approached her to collaborate on single Clarity, which peaked at number eight on the US Billboard charts, reached number one on the Dance chart and proceeded to win Best Dance Recording at the 56th Grammy Awards. “It was another one of those moments. I was in east London, seeing what was happening in America, but I wasn’t there to be in it or hear it being played on the radio. It was a really big turning point, and it was only really when I arrived at the Grammys that I realised [the magnitude], although I still didn’t process any of it – it was all suddenly happening.
“But there were two sides, I remember it being such an incredible thing to be part of, and I was so grateful for the journey I could go on with Zedd [she went on the road with him for a year], which was way bigger than I ever thought my music would go. But then I think a lot of people thought, because that song became so massive, I was going to release something similar, but my music is actually a bit of a different genre.” She obviously needn’t have worried as, soon, she became an artist in her own right. And when she signed to Sony, the entire first album she’d written in her bedroom, between the ages of 16 and 18, was ready to go. “In my eyes, and at the time, I thought that no-one’s going to hear this,” she laughs. “I think it’s quite rare to sign with a major and already have most of your material ready.” Unusually, for a musician of such a young age, Lou has had full artistic control over her image, sound and live shows (something she sorely misses as a platform, while they are on hold during the pandemic), from the start. “I think, automatically, if you’re signed to a major label, people think you’re a built machine, a lot of people didn’t realise that I had artistic control.” She laughs when explaining that even her brother didn’t: “I remember him turning around to me in a car, when I first signed, saying, ‘So who writes your songs?’. And I said, ‘Me! I write them’. And he was like, ‘No, don’t’,” she smiles. But not only does Lou write for herself, but for other musicians. “In the early days, I remember ending up with so many extra songs that I asked my management if there was anyone we could give them to. We sent a few out and, to my surprise, a lot came back with a yes. “I ended up working with Rudimental, Giorgio Moroder and all sorts of people. It gave me an insight into these other artists’ worlds and it’s really interesting to experience someone else’s story, you learn a lot from that.” But then came a point that, having spent her 20s enveloped in the industry, she began to realise she had perhaps missed out on some life experiences. “It’s funny, because I’d done a lot, but it was almost in a guarded way, because it was within music. “So, it wasn’t just running off and making mistakes without any pressure. During my time off, it may sound corny, but I did a lot of soul searching and a lot of grounding – and I guess started living an adult life that wasn’t just in the industry.” During her hiatus, she did just that. “I ended up

SILKED LONDON Stephanie Beard launched her London-based clothing brand this year. She creates a tightly-edited collection of eight ‘forever’ silhouettes (including a shirt, kimono, slip dress and cami top) that are available in just three colourways and made from 100% silk. She also works on the simple premise that the more you wear an item the more sustainable it becomes. Her aim is to create trans-seasonal and traditional clothing after struggling herself to pack for multiple destinations and climates. “I wanted to create a womenswear brand that focused on the pieces that stand the test of time and are the easy go-to items that won’t let you down – and what material feels more luxurious than silk?” Prices from £165, silkedlondon.com HELLOFASHION.COM

doing some mental stuff, like going to a couple of songwriting camps in the Nicaraguan jungle, surrounded by lots of strange animals. There I could write without the pressure. That was really nice, because it didn’t matter if it was good, or awful – I was doing it because I loved it.” And plenty of those songs made it onto her forthcoming new album. “Yes, most of them are definitely existing in the real world,” she affirms. “I’ve always described the writing process as cathartic. Something I learnt really early on was that writing things down is a really good way of releasing stuff into the ether and letting it go. So I would do that anyway growing up, I’ve always found it really funny that now lots of people are hearing it.” We ask if she’s had people question if a certain song is actually about them. “Oh, yeah, definitely. A lot of ex-boyfriends,” she chortles. “Some probably haven’t been that happy that I’ve written them. “My second album was around a break-up and I tend to write about very intense emotional things, so obviously, that would be part of it. I’ve learnt to stop focusing on break-ups as I’ve grown a bit older, I actually prefer writing about more permanent fixtures in life.” Like Friends In The Corner, a melancholic single from the new album about her close-knit group of childhood friends, and the vulnerability of growing older that they all shared they were feeling on a weekend away together. “When I took that time off, I spent a lot of it with friends that I’ve grown up with, and maybe we hadn’t seen each other as much as we’d liked. We were, by then, in our late 20s, when you get that thing where you start spinning out slightly. “All these feelings start coming up and there’s a lot of pressure when you start growing into yourself more. I remember looking around and seeing this in some of my friends on the trip. “We all connected and were actually just really honest for once. We weren’t putting up that, ‘everything’s going to be fine’ barrier. We admitted we were struggling a bit. I think lockdown really showed that as well, it brought with it a lot of vulnerability.” Another single on the album is Kathleen, which she wrote about her grandmother. “She is a legend. She did things before everyone else – she was this hardcore feminist, really environmentallyconscious – she was basically doing all the things we’re supposed to be doing now. And she was also an English teacher, so has always inspired me by feeding me with loads of poetry, books and all sorts.” When Lou was coming out of a turbulent relationship, she visited her. “Because I do when things go a bit wrong in my life,” she says. “My
grandma ended up giving me the most amazing advice, which I recorded on my iPhone. I thought, this is gold, I need to remember it. “Then a couple of weeks later, I went into the studio and was a bit stuck about what to write – I was coming to the end of writing the album. I put on my voice notes and I found her recording and thought, not only do I need to hear this, but everyone does. I need to write a song about it. So it’s an ode to her – the chorus is her giving me advice. It’s definitely a really personal song for me that I’ll always cherish.” During her early career, Lou spent a lot of time in Los Angeles and Hollywood. Another song on the album is a very raw and honest account of the experiences she had there. “It was a really brilliant time, but the more I went back and forth between LA and London, the lonelier I became. I started to notice there was a lonely side to the city that wasn’t as authentic as I thought it was. “I really need family and friends around me to flourish and, when I was spending a lot of time in LA, I realised just how important that actually was. That was around the time I thought, hang on a minute, I need to take a break and figure out where my mates are. Then we went straight into lockdown and I was on my own again!” she laughs. Growing up in Hampshire, Lou remembers always wanting to run off to London. “My sister had moved there and I felt a little bit left behind. So I remember wanting to write music to escape.” She started that process aged 12 and the first full song she penned was called Like Foxes Do, “Because foxes mate for life – so it’s quite bizarre and it’s probably the worst song,” she jokes. But it did have a significance, as that’s where the name Foxes stemmed from. “Obviously I had a thing about foxes,” she laughs. “But there were actually quite a few reasons that led me to call myself that. I’d always wanted to have a name that wasn’t my own, to be a bit more ambiguous and to let the music live in its own world. And I felt that foxes really resonated with the music I was making. “Another reason is that when I told my mum about the name she just went, ‘What?’. Then she told me she’d had a dream a couple of nights before that all these foxes were running up our street howling. “And then, I thought about foxes and how they make the worst noises in the world. RosaRio Dawson We caught up with actress and activist, Rosario Dawson, about her new role championing a brighter future with infinite possibilities in Pandora’s first-ever sustainably lab-created diamond collection, Pandora Brilliance. What does it mean to you to be a Pandora brand ambassador? What I love about the brand is its ethos of inclusivity and also the commitments it has made to sustainability – particularly in recent years. It feels really natural and authentic to be working with a brand that shares the same values as me. The price point of lab-created diamonds is much more accessible – was this level of inclusivity something that appealed to you? Diamonds are traditionally associated with romance and gifting, but what I love about this collection is that it’s open to everyone – it turns tradition on its head and encourages everyone to purchase something for themselves. I love the idea of buying yourself a special piece of jewellery as commitment to your future or a symbol of everything you’ve achieved – there’s a real sense of empowerment to it. Tell us about your commitment to sustainability... In 2013, I co-founded Studio 189, a sustainable fashion and media lifestyle brand, with the incredibly talented Abrima Erwiah. We work
with artisanal communities in Africa, who specialise in traditional craftsmanship techniques, which has created jobs, supported education and provided skills training. Is your teenage daughter, Isabella, excited about you working with Pandora? She is so excited! What’s really special about it is that it’s a brand that many girls have grown up with and collected over the years. Isabella really loves the charms and bracelets, so we’re excited to start building our own collection together. I like to switch up my look, depending on how I’m feeling that day, but generally I like to wear a few key pieces. Stacked rings and a simple hoop will definitely be my go-to look for this collection. The campaign message revolves around the idea of ‘infinite possibilities’ – was this something you connected with? Absolutely. I’ve always been so passionate about helping and supporting women, in particular, and I know how powerful it is to have that sense of self-belief and confidence. Not only can it help you to realise your dreams, but it also helps you to be resilient and overcome obstacles along the way. For me that confidence was instilled at a young age from my own mother – who has always been my guiding light and all-round powerhouse!

hen launching her eponymous brand in 2004, it is clear that Tory Burch approached it with a pragmatism evident in all she does. Based on her own personal tastes, her starting point was to create pieces that she found impossibly hard to locate, and that didn’t cost a fortune. “It was things I myself was missing that are chic and timeless,” she tells us, on a Zoom call from New York. “I was young and couldn’t, nor did I want to, spend on designer prices all of the time. But I wanted the quality and, quite honestly, felt that wasn’t being offered in the market at that time.” To raise backing she approached around 150 investors, telling them to only put in what they could afford to lose. “I was so terrified of taking other people’s money,” she smiles. “And they were surprised [by this honesty] and believed in me. But only time would tell and no-one had any idea if it would work, including myself.” The first pieces went on sale at an in-store ‘party’ at the launch of her shop in New York – and sold out immediately. “We basically sold through our inventory; we were packed – it was almost as if we were giving everything away. “It was an exciting moment to think that maybe we were on to something, however we had no idea where it would go.” Brand Tory Burch now has over 300 stores worldwide The ethos behind Tory Burch’s brand and an estimated worth of of covetable clothing and homewares around £1 billion. Forbes is female empowerment and respect named her the 88th most powerful woman in the world Words B E C K Y D O N A L D S O N last year. Selling a lifestyle, it would seem customers can’t get enough of her hautehippy apparel, polished sportswear, chic accessories and, more recently, homewares. Tory, who now runs the business from New York, was raised in a 250-year-old Georgian farmhouse in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. She describes her childhood as “incredible”, adding: “I grew up with my brothers [Robert, Jamie and Leonard] and my close family on a farm, it was very wholesome. We were pretty far away from most things, even our school was a 40-minute drive.” Although the carefree, outdoorsy nature of her formative years meant she was pretty much a tomboy, Tory began honing her style at high school. “I dressed in a classic, preppy way, but I had a sporty side, too.” She then continued to carve out her own aesthetic at university. “People would laugh because I was a music fan, so I would wear a concert T-shirt with a Hermès scarf; everyone kind of labelled my style. I became known for it, but it wasn’t a conscious thing. It was just a bit more out-there.” Her parents, who were both avid travellers with an eclectic and worldly style, have been omnipresent throughout Tory’s life. When she launched, many of the ideas came from what ▼

she’d seen her mother wear over the years. And the way she dresses is still a big influence to Tory today. “She is the most stylish woman I know; she’s always had this concept of less is more. And she’s the first to give us real feedback – positive and negative.” The brand’s iconic Reva flat, with T-logo medallion, was named in honour of her mother. “That’s her biggest joke, she said she’s known as a shoe,” she laughs. “She’s a good luck charm of sorts; every time we put her name on something it becomes one of our best-sellers.” When she left the University of Pennsylvania, where she majored in art history, Tory approached Serbian-born, American fashion designer Zoran, who was known for his understated minimalist approach, for a work placement. “I’ll never forget, I wrote to him, as my mother wore his clothing – he ended up answering my note saying I can have a job, but I needed to start in four days. “I had to move from Philadelphia to New York straight away and figure out an apartment over the weekend. All of a sudden there was me opening vodka bottles at 10am, in this loft full of extraordinary clothing – and just learning everything, because it was only three people and the sewing team,” she says, before confirming she wasn’t indulging in the vodka, personally. It was through Zoran she met Candy Pratts Price, who offered her a job at Harper’s Bazaar. She then moved into PR and advertising at Ralph Lauren, Vera Wang and Loewe. “One thing led to another, but I took away different things from each place. It was great training.” Creating a non-toxic workspace at her own company was fundamental from the get-go. “I had worked in wonderful places and I thought it was an opportunity to create an environment that felt different. “When I hired people, I said, ‘I don’t want a bitchy fashion environment’. I really meant that very sincerely, the culture is what makes our company stand out, it truly differentiates us, and the culture can change very quickly, so it’s a constant that you work on. “I was raised with the understanding that you treat everyone the same, whether it’s a taxi driver or the Queen of England, and life is too short to have an environment that’s tricky or that people don’t feel appreciated and valued in – so it’s very much part of who we are.” Something she has in place is Buddy Values, named after her late father Buddy Robinson, who she has said treated everyone with kindness and respect. “When we started to work on our bylaws, I had just lost my father – he saw the company when it was four years old. “He was such a kind, incredible person. He had a wicked sense of humour and was a man of few words, but they were always poignant and thoughtful – but also hysterically funny. He took care of people and he was an extraordinarily kind person – he had empathy.” To maintain this ethos, the company does in-house culture surveys and workshops that focus on diversity and a program called Color Brave, which creates safe environments for people to share stories around things that have happened to them, whether it be a racist or sexist act, or something else. “We want to create safe environments for employees to feel that they can talk about things and that’s been a pretty amazing discovery, people that I’ve worked with for ten years I’ve gotten to know better.

The beauty empire founder and make-up artist to the stars will be visiting her childhood home in Ibiza Holidaying or not, it’s always about hair and make-up. I love Sam McKnight’s range and I style my hair with Cool Girl Hairspray. I love to have gorgeous, flowing waves and the Dyson Airwrap is so easy to use. And I never leave the house without my favourite Mason Pearson hairbrush, it stimulates blood flow to the roots and spreads essential oils to the ends. I take my Airbrush Flawless Setting Spray everywhere with me – I even created a travel size to fit in my handbag. No melting, no fading, no creasing. Palettes are also perfect for on the go: powder; blusher; bronzer, eye colours and a giant mirror. When it comes to my summer holiday scent, I love notes of lemon, peach, tuberose and jasmine. My mother, Patsy, is one of my biggest beauty icons. She lives in Ibiza, so she has a year-round glow and never goes anywhere without her signature red lipstick – her mantra is, “a red lip can take you anywhere!”. She also has perfectlypainted red nails, whereas for me, I love Essie’s Ballet Slippers – a natural, nuanced nude that really works for travelling. I am a skincare obsessive and I never travel without my Magic Cream, my husband, George, is always stealing it. And as a redhead with fair skin, I’m careful in the sun – an SPF each day helps keep the wrinkles away! My favourite is my new Invisible UV Flawless Poreless Primer with SPF 50.

etail has unfortunately suffered a huge economic impact since the start of the pandemic, with many shops disappearing from British high streets. But alongside this loss, we have seen some bold, nimble and kind independent fashion brands quietly flourishing. The consumer’s needs and habits have begun changing for good, with more of us working from home and becoming accustomed to shopping online, where these brands can be found – without the need for an expensive shopfront. We are also seeing an increased desire for sustainably-produced, slow fashion that creates less waste; and consumers are developing a less-is-more mentality, looking for pieces that are designed to be both seasonless and enduring. These smaller brands are offering the customer added transparency and homespun values. Along with the rise of Instagram shopping, which allows customers to interact directly with the designers. Here are nine small-scale British brands to love and support…
HARMUR
BOUTIQUE BRANDS TO SUPPORT While the pandemic has sadly affected some fashion retailers, it’s also allowed independent brands to flourish. Here are some of our favourites
Founded by the glamorous mother and daughter trio, Constance Murphy, Matilda Murphy and Minnie Hartley, the brand first gained recognition for its silk handfinished tops, they initially made just three. Harmur has since grown into a full occasionwear offering with four collections a year, alongside the consistent Classic Collection, which, of course, includes that signature, backless party top. Now stocked globally, its first sales were at twice yearly ‘shopping events’ held at their London apartment – customers grew through word of mouth. Fans include Poppy Delevingne, Leonie Hanne and Negin Mirsalehi. Prices from £22, harmur.co.uk

ADANOLA Activewear has never been in such high demand and Manchesterbased Adanola is up there with the best. Founded by Hyrum Cook in 2015, the bra top and legging combos and tracksuit sets are available in a muted palette of sage, chocolate and biscuit; as well as charcoal greys, olive greens and midnight blues. Fabrics are super-soft and designed for a relaxed fit, plus the sweatpants have a chunky cuffed ankle and waistband. Accessories include branded caps, socks and large totes. AEQUEM Ieva Balciute and Magda Daniloaia developed the sustainable e-commerce platform after meeting at a business event and the concept went live in 2019. The name is inspired by the Latin word ‘aequo’, meaning equipoise, balance and equilibrium, and its ethos is just that – everything stocked is made from organic, upcycled, recycled and other eco-friendly materials, including ready-towear, jewellery and shoes; as well as home, beauty and menswear. “Sustainable fashion can be beautiful and luxurious. It can be exactly the same as normal fashion, but made considering people and the planet.” Prices from £14, aequem.com

Laura’s label was created in 2016 and is inspired by her trips to Bali. Combining old and new, the solid silver gilded with 24-carat gold pieces fuse antique aesthetics (she is fascinated by museums) with a modern sensibility. She works with semiprecious stones, such as lapis lazuli, peridot, agate and citrine. Originally a fashion designer, Laura learnt artisanal metalwork skills from Balinese locals and switched to jewellery. She is now based in London, where she designs the pieces, which are then made by a group of local artists back in Bali. “I love that each piece is slightly different and I thought this would also be the strength of the brand, the unicity.” Prices from £80, lauragalasso.com

ure, it’s not sunny the whole time, and yeah, pebbles over soft, white sand is never going to entirely be my jam, but let’s face it, the humble (and increasingly pretty spoiling!) staycation is where it’s at this summer… A little more social distancy, a lot more eco-friendly, and a great opportunity to see parts of this island I’ve yet to explore. I’m already scouring Kip Hideaways, a membership site full of stylish and affordable rentals, from treehouses to coastal studios, all within the UK. After searching for some new swimwear to add to the summer proceedings, I was bowled over by Paper London’s latest colourful collection of responsiblymanufactured swimwear. Its innovative, 100%-regenerated nylon fibre fabric is sourced from recycled fishing nets and waste products found floating in the ocean and also protects you against the sun’s rays.
On those balmy city nights (and perhaps a little inspired by Bridgerton?!) I will be reaching for my 100% pure silk nightdress from If Only If Nightwear, a family-run British business which designs the most timeless, ethically-created nightdresses, ensuring the sweetest of dreams (which may, or may not, feature the Duke of Hastings…). where she speaks to industry insiders on the topic. How did you and Vince come up with the idea of Hunu?
The cups came from a personal need, we both have busy lives and lots of coffees with friends. Also, on set [of a shoot] you go through disposable cups constantly. I wanted something that could fit in a small purse or pocket, so we created our own collapsible silicone coffee cups. Was Guernsey a fun place to grow up?
It’s so beautiful and such a safe environment. From the age of seven, I was cycling around the whole island on my bike, or I’d go to the beach with friends and my mum would just be like, ‘Yep, go ahead’. I now realise that my favourite place to be is by the sea or doing some kind of activity near water or nature. So Guernsey gave me a real appreciation and love for the ocean and the environment. Did you pick up exercise tips from your fellow Victoria’s Secret girls?
BEHIND THE SCENES
COFFEE WITH MEGAN
I definitely learned a lot leading up to the shows, because you’re so hyper aware of looking your best. And if there are any models that have tried all of the different workouts available – it is definitely the VS girls. But I was always really sporty, I was in England Netball’s Academy squad. Did you look up to any models as a teenager?
For Megan Williams, the face of this issue’s fashion shoot, modelling has inspired her to launch her own eco brand
Have you missed dressing up during lockdown?
I definitely have. I’m a really casual girl, who doesn’t wear much make-up, but then I look back at photos of nights out with my girls in New York and I’m like, ‘I do really miss this’. I might need a few new pieces for my closet to spice that up again. Who are your favourite designers?
I love Jacquemus as a label, because it makes really beautiful, feminine pieces. But I also try and shop sustainably, so denim brands like Re/Done and also Calle Del Mar, which makes locally-produced knits. And I like to shop at vintage places, such as Worn in London. Is there a beauty product you couldn’t be without?
I’ve been using a plant-based oil from Lion & Loki, which is my go-to for everything – even my hair.
WORDS: BECKY DONALDSON
M
odel Megan Williams was scouted aged 14 while eating McDonald’s in Woking shopping centre, near to her secondary school, “We went there every Saturday without fail,” she says, smiling. They were running a competition, which she didn’t win, but one of the judges suggested she approach a London agency. She was signed and began immediately – since then she’s worked for Victoria’s Secret, Ralph Lauren, Elie Saab, Dolce & Gabbana, Guess and Philipp Plein. Recently, having moved from New York to London, her and boyfriend Vince Dickson, who is also a model, founded collapsible silicone coffee cup brand, Hunu. And now, with a more informed knowledge of the environment, she is not only looking at how she can be more sustainable personally, but on educating others through her podcast Coffee With Megan,
I remember ripping campaigns out of magazines, I had a model montage on my wall. I liked the old school Guess campaigns with Naomi Campbell and Claudia Schiffer, and I still have such a love for the 90s models, like Christy Turlington and Cindy Crawford.

This month, four of the most influential women in beauty discuss their dream staycations and what they pack for a sunshine break. Plus, nourishing products for afro hair and the best new blushers according to tone and texture
Beauty influencers’
SHORT HAUL CHIC We speak to four industry insiders to find out where they will be spending the summer and what beauty essentials they’ll be packing Words A L I C E M A N N I N G
By the seaside
RUTH CRILLY
The model and digital creator, also known as A Model Recommends, and founder of The Night Feed app, will be holidaying on the British coast My dream staycation is always by the sea in either Dorset or Cornwall. One of my favourite hotels in the world is the Scarlet in Cornwall – all of the rooms look towards the sea and it’s just so peaceful. All year I look forward to a Cornwall trip so that I can have fresh lobster from a little place called Fresh From The Sea in Port Isaac. I dream about it sometimes. I always travel with a good cleanser, an antioxidant serum and a heavy-duty moisturiser, because I tend to be outdoors in the elements a lot. I have a little travel pot of Emma Hardie’s Moringa Cleansing Balm that I refill from a big one and I always have Skinceuticals’ Discoloration Defense Serum in my travel bag. I try to pack compact beauty things when I travel, it’s almost an obsession trying to get my skincare into the smallest possible unit. The Elizabeth Arden Ceramide Capsules are great for that as they are tiny. I am now very careful in the sun, I used to be the sort of person who would oil themselves and then slowly turn all day, like a rotisserie. La Roche-Posay makes lightweight sunscreens that are really reliable and inexpensive enough to not be mean with application.
LJQ BEAUTY Two young kids mean little time for make-up, unless great-uncle iPad is looking after them. I travel with a tinted moisturiser or skin enhancer – Code8 Radiate Beauty Balm is amazing and Nars does a heavier tinted moisturiser that gives an incredibly dewy look – a bronzer and touch of blush, then a good brown mascara. It has to be brown for ‘off duty’ because black on my blonde lashes always makes me look a bit too done. Clarins Supra and Yves Saint Laurent Mascara Volume Effet Faux Cils are the best brown mascaras I’ve found at any price point. When it comes to my hair, air dry all the way. I very rarely use a hairdryer, just a bit of Colab dry shampoo or Living Proof Full Dry Volume Blast in the roots and Davines Oi Oil through the dry, bleached lengths. My summer scent is Philosykos by Diptyque. It’s the ultimate fig scent and it feels a bit more sophisticated than the usual coconutty summer smells. My easiest holiday look is a Me + Em maxi dress with bright white trainers. I spent months tracking down sunglasses like the ones Rose Byrne wore when she played Gloria Steinem in Mrs America. I finally found a Givenchy pair and had those light-reacctive lenses put in – so I can see in the sun. I’m m really into that retro, Chloé sort of look – sunkissed skin, bit of vintage lace, brown leather sandals – but in reality, I end up in semi-tailored shorts and a vest top. I’d like to be like Paula Sutton (@hillhousevintage) and crack out amazing dresses for high tea on the lawn, but it just ain’t happening with kids in tow. Not for a few years, anyway...

The renowned hairdresser and creative director of John Frieda salons is also off to Cornwall to ride the waves I love the ritual of beauty – it calms me down and soothes my soul. So staycations are all about nourishing products to treat my skin and hair while I’m away. I love Sisley face masks. Ren Overnight Recovery Balm is a calming miracle worker come wind, rain or shine. Wella Colour Motion Mask works wonders on hair and there’s nothing like getting in from a long walk to a hot shower and Ren Calming Shower Gel. I use Environ skincare on my face and the Erborian BB Crème, it’s lightweight and hydrating. I pile on layers of Chantecaille mascara because I like thick lashes and I use a Chantecaille eyeliner in Amethyst, as it contrasts with my blue eyes. I gravitate towards sparkly shades in summer, like Chantecaille eye shadow in Pangolin, Nars The Multiple in South Beach on my cheeks and OPI All A’Twitter in Glitter – I love glittery fingers and toes with a tan. On my lips I use the Dr Perricone No Makeup Lipstick – it’s balmy and provides some protection from the coastal wind. Before I hit the beach, I usually apply Nioxin Deep Protect Density Mask and tie my hair up into a bun. And the peppermint oil in Nioxin Shampoo and Conditioner makes my hair and scalp feel super fresh afterwards. Coola does the best sunscreen and it has a matte finish for the face, which I love. My top packing tip is to buy a lot of small bottles from Muji and decant everything, otherwise they’d be no space for clothes! I love to travel, so Chloé’s Nomade has to be one of my scents.

RUBY HAMMER
The make-up artist and brand founder is heading to the Cotswolds I’m heading straight to Oxfordshire to check into Soho Farmhouse; fresh air, long walks, bike rides, roaring fires, treatments and wonderful food all in one place. I travel with a heavily-edited version of my make-up bag. My essentials are light and dark concealers – Nars Soft Matte Complete Concealer in Hazelnut, Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer in Amande and Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage SC-7. I also pack Lancôme Lash IdÔle Lash Lifting Volumizing Mascara and an eyeliner. Westman Atelier Baby Cheeks in Bichette is brilliant for eyes, cheeks and lips. I’ll always bring some balmy nudes for day and one vibrant red lip shade – my go-to is Charlotte Tilbury Red Carpet Red. My Ruby Hammer 3-in-1 brush offers everything for applying, but I’ll always pack some lash curlers, too. My favourite SPF for the face is Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen, it doesn’t leave a bluey film. For body, I love a spray oil – you can’t go wrong with Vichy Capital Soleil Protective Water SPF50. My all-year-round scent is from Aromatherapy Associates, but for summer I do love Tom Ford Neroli Portofino. And I always get my nails done before I go away. On my fingers I wear Leighton Denny Crème De La Crème and on my toes it’s CND Bloodline. I won’t pack a hairdryer or curling irons, but a tub of Philip Kingsley Elasticizer will mean my hair always looks in good condition, however I wear it.

Up The Garden Path is one hot collab between set designer Shona Heath and Jo Malone London (below), which celebrates the heady magic of an English country garden. The range, from £86, includes pastel-hued candle accessories (think holders, lids and trays), and our inner interior designer is seriously freaking out. Guaranteed to add colour and character, you’ll want one for every room.
We’ll admit it, we’re suckers for glitter and the models at Etam made us want to dip our brushes straight into the sparkly stuff. So, when Nails Inc Inc.Redible Party Recharge Under-Eye Masks, £20 (left), landed on our desks we couldn’t wait to slap them on – all the fun with zero mess. With hyaluronic acid and niacinamide, the jelly masks soothe and hydrate for a fresh look. Just don’t forget to take a selfie while adorning them.
Flushed cheeks are having a moment, thanks to the SS21 collections. And, right on cue, there are some brilliant, brand new blushers for summer. If you like your complexion matte, then you’ll love Vieve Sunset Blush, £23 (1), while Paul & Joe limited-edition Gel Blush in three shades, £19 each (2), are a water-based gel formula and a doddle to blend. Givenchy Prisme Libre Blush, £38.50 (3), combines four different shades to sculpt and illuminate cheekbones.

RECLAIM YOUR TEXTURE The natural hair movement has gained huge momentum, as women ditch relaxers and wear their curls, coils and kinks with pride. If you are about to embark on your natural hair journey, here’s how to find a routine that works for you.

BLUMARINE
INSIDER INFO According to a survey by Antidote Street, a digital platform for textured hair, 77% of women feel like they are using the wrong conditioning and styling products. And, according to Mónica Santos, a hair coach at Carra – an app that offers personalised product recommendations and curl care advice – it’s important for women transitioning to their natural hair to use products with a high protein count and get the frequency of their use right. “Transitioning hair is weaker than natural hair due to the chemical or thermal treatments it has endured,” says Mónica. “Protein will give the hair more structure and patch up weakened or broken strands. And, as hair grows and the relaxed hair is cut, the need for protein will reduce.” Mónica also suggests washing hair once a week to remove product build-up, “Then condition to seal the cuticle and, in some cases, use a deep conditioner”. Colour-treated hair may require this extra step. “Finish with water-based botanical styling products that contain humectants [watergrabbing ingredients, such as glycerin and panthenol] to prolong hydration,” advises Mónica. And to detangle knots, comb from the ends towards the roots to avoid tugging or breakage. One product you should use sparingly is coconut oil. “When we’re thirsty, we reach for water, not oil, and it’s the same with our hair. If hair is dry, wash it. Coconut oil is one of the few oils that can actually penetrate the hair strand and preserve elasticity, but when used raw and excessively it starts to prevent water getting in, leading to dry hair. And shampoos can’t remove oil from inside the hair strand.”

CURL CODING Hair texture has a coding system, which can be helpful when researching products. The higher the number and letter, the tighter the curl pattern. So straight hair is Type 1 and Type 2s are wavy. Type 3s are curly – see left for 3B springy ringlets and above for 3C corkscrews. Type 4s are coily. For example, you could see Lupita Nyong’o or Maria Borges with 4C texture – the tightest coiled strands.

hile you can easily devote several hours a week to a spa-worthy facial skincare routine, many of us are guilty of neglecting to moisturise our bodies. The skin on your body has fewer sebaceous glands in comparison to your face, so it can be common to have an oily-to-normal complexion but experience dryness or dehydration elsewhere. Sister brand to the UK’s best-selling Childs Farm, the range focuses on gentle, effective formulas that care for sensitive and eczema-prone skin. REBUILD YOUR SELF-ESTEEM
SLEEP SOLUTION
If the thought of returning to ‘normality’ has left you feeling anxious, you’re not alone, especially if you suffer from low selfesteem. Psychotherapist Lee Pycroft shows us the tools to help achieve emotional balance
WORDS: ELLE SIXSMITH PHOTOS: STOCKSY *THE SLEEP SCHOOL’S THE STATE OF UK SLEEP SURVEY JANUARY 2021
Since the pandemic, 43% of us have experienced poor sleep, with work cited as the number one disrupter, says a new study*. A bad night’s sleep can easily escalate into an unproductive day: cue brain fog; slow reaction times and overeating (hello, Pret brownies). For a long-term solution, download the Sleep School app for a free seven-day trial (£29.99 per year thereafter). Created by a team of neuroscientists and sleep experts, you’ll find evidence-backed courses tailored to every need – whether it’s anxiety that’s fuelling your sleepless nights or chronic insomnia. Plus, you can book a private session with a qualified sleep doctor for extra support.
Create boundaries
Establish a boundary over how much time you spend ruminating. Take 15 minutes to brain dump your worries into a journal and then do something enjoyable, like going for a walk. Then revisit your journal later to see if you’ve been catastrophising. Set positive intentions
Say your daily intentions out loud or write them down. Set yourself a 90-minute window for each task and then give yourself a break. It’s a great way to feel a sense of completion.

SPF REFRESH
SHAKE IT OFF Sick of that bad smell coming from your protein shaker? Upgrade to the ShakeSphere steel tumbler, £55 (above), which, thanks to a clean capsule design, is able to break down powders and puree soft fruits without the need for messy mixing balls or grids. The copper and double stainless steel lining keeps drinks cold for 12 hours or hot for eight. Just shake and go.
If there’s still half a bottle of SPF lingering in your cupboard, it might be time to bin it. “There’s a far greater risk of immediate and longterm skin damage if you use out-of-date suncare,” warns dermatologist Dr Hiva Fassihi. If loading skin with a moisturiser and SPF feels OTT, just use La Roche-Posay Anthelios Age Correct SPF 50, £25 (left). It’s hydrating and broad spectrum, so shields against UVB (burning rays) and UVA (skin ageing) and corrects existing sun-induced damage like dark spots.
Create balance
When you channel all of your energy into one area of life, be it work or relationships, other aspects can become undernourished. If other parts of life are also built up, it can help you feel more balanced. Accept compliments
Ask close friends to make a list of all the things they love about you. So, when selfcriticism hits, this list can act as a gentle reminder to know that you are appreciated.

We painted the railings white, installed curtain poles and the seat is made from a wooden pallet. California MAGIC Founder of US brand Rails, Jeff Abrams’ beautiful Montecito estate has a relaxed sensibility mixed with heritage pieces found on his global travels Words B E C K Y D O N A L D S O N

J
eff Abrams is a testament that anything can be reinvented, as long as it’s good enough. Since its inception in 2008, in a market that is already crowded, his apparel brand, Rails, has managed to thrive, with stockists in 40 countries, a newly-opened Soho New York flagship – and plans for four more stores this year. Although firmly rooted in the southern Californian lifestyle, its refined European sensibility has made it a global hit. Quickly evolving from the Rails trademark Hunter shirt, which was made with Tencel, a revolutionary super-soft fabric, the brand now offers a full lifestyle range. “We’re trying not to roll out too many categories too quickly, but I think what’s great is that we know there’s a path for us, and a lot of new channels – so we’re actually launching denim in fall and a home goods collection, featuring our signature luxe fabrications, next year.” Although Jeff didn’t train in fashion, art and photography have always been present in his life. “I had that in me and it seemed fashion was a good place to combine my creative side and desire to have a business. I didn’t really know what I was doing at the beginning; it was really this discovery process. “But that’s what’s exciting, there’s a new challenge every day. And you’re reinventing yourself every season in some way with a new collection. So it’s always interesting and fresh.” He had previously worked in marketing and advertising for a TV studio, but always wanted to run his own company. “The corporate environment, while it was fine, has a big hierarchy and everyone reports to a boss. And there are also those Sunday-scaries, where you’re like… at work tomorrow.” So when he began Rails, he wanted it to have a “family feel” – the fact his first and second employees are still with him today proves he has accomplished that. “I’ve tried to build this environment where we’re all on the same team, and it’s not like you have this boss, it’s been good for our brand culture. “I try to keep everybody connected to what’s happening in the business, so whether you’re working in the warehouse, in the accounting team or another department, you understand how your job impacts the whole business. “And a sense of humour is important, honestly – it’s the number one thing. Our company laughs a lot, we have a joke and a good time. If you get too serious, what’s the point? The journey should be the exciting part of it.”
Rails, which was named with the Interrailing he did after college in mind, has a big focus on travel. A starting point for each collection carries the theme of garments that are effortless to wear and effortless to pack. But also pieces that appeal to its growing global market. “There are not a lot of brands from California who are really thinking of themselves internationally. “We’ve really tried to set ourselves apart by doing that. I think about each market as if it’s our own backyard, they’re cultivated on a grassroots level. I don’t think of the UK as some far-off location that we’re sending things out into the ether to. And that’s hopefully why we will continue to be successful.” This year, Jeff has stores planned for San Francisco, LA, a pop-up in Paris this spring and a flagship in London towards the latter of this year (along with an international headquarters based in the UK capital). “Part of what we’re trying to do now is expand our footprint, where historically we’ve been primarily in the wholesale channel. It is still very important to us to sell to our speciality partners around the globe, but we’re trying to build our direct-toconsumer presence, and that’s both with our retail stores and website – where people can interact with full collections.” From very early on in the Rails story, celebrities have independently invested in items: Gisele, Beyoncé and Kate Moss have regularly been seen in the brand and Matthew McConaughey went back to buy ten more shirts for his friends. “This has been great for getting the word out there about our brand,” he says, adding that celebrity families are his next target. “Where the mother, children and dad all wear it. Cindy Crawford and her family would be good,” he smiles. Travelling around Europe, and specifically living in Italy, has not only inspired the concept of the label, but his affinity prompted him to “purchase on a whim” El Mirador – his beautiful 19th-century spread in the enclave of Montecito, Santa Barbara – because it made him feel nostalgic for his time abroad. “I discovered it online two years ago, I’ve always dreamed about a romantic country retreat away from the busy LA life. I viewed it with no intention of actually buying – it was more to allow my countryside dream last a little longer,” he laughs. “But as soon as I drove up the tree-lined driveway and the house was revealed against the beautiful landscape, I fell in love. It was

out on the perfect white sand beach and listen to a great episode of Desert Island Discs. I’d fall asleep on the beach until about 4pm, which is perfect timing for my next stop, afternoon tea at The Wolseley in London. My whole family would meet there and we’d order finger sandwiches, with extra cucumber, and scones. I’d wear... HVN, because ever since I launched my label I’ve really lived in my dresses for day to day. But I also love Valentino, Chanel and Miu Miu. Whenever I’ve travelled over the past ten years, my small Chanel cross-body black bag has come with me. It only fits credit cards, a lip balm and a phone, but that’s OK with me. After tea I’d be on the next flight to Tokyo with Ross and Rio, we always vacation there together, she even crashed our honeymoon. We’d walk around Shibuya and Harajuku, shopping stationery and vintage. I’d be sure to pay a visit to my favourite stores: Loft; Tokyu Hands and Miss Faline. For dinner we’d visit our favourite ramen spot, Afuri, and order the delicious yuzu ramen. I’m not exaggerating when I say I daydream about this meal every day. There’s a few all over the city, but my favourite is the one in Nakameguro. After dinner, we’d walk by the river nearby, which is beautiful and peaceful. After dinner Ross and I would head back home to LA, because I’d complete my perfect day ending it in bed with my cats, Marmite and Zingo. I’d take forever choosing a Poirot episode to watch, but pass out in the first five minutes. Heaven.
