Spice up the traditional cupcake with these treats the kids will love.

I threw a birthday party for my daughter over the weekend. She’d invited her entire class and, unsurprisingly, they had an absolute ball. But if I’m honest, the occasion was equal parts fun and stressful. Surely, I’m not the only one who finds kids’ parties testing – particularly when you’re hosting. Even after someone else’s party, managing that post-party sugar crash is a feat in itself! But my daughter had the best day of her life, so I’d do it all again in a heartbeat. If you’ve got a party coming up, head to page 48 for some cracking cupcake recipes. Happy party planning!

he tragically lost her husband, John Kennerley, in 2019 and now Kerri-Anne Kennerley has been left heartbroken all over again after her much-loved mother, Grace, died last week, aged 99. In a sweet tribute, Kerri-Anne confirmed the sad news on Instagram, sharing a video of her mother dancing to Meghan Trainor’s ‘All About That Bass’. “This morning we lost our beautiful dancing queen, always elegant and graceful. She is now up there dancing with dad and John. We will always love you, Mum,” she touchingly penned. The post was flooded with condolences from Kerri-Anne’s showbiz friends including Patti Newton, model Megan Gale and presenter Kylie Gillies. Last year the media personality praised her “fun” mother in a tribute for Mother’s Day, giving an insight into their close bond. “You might not be very mobile and in need of high care, but I love having you live with me,” she wrote. “We still have great conversations and your imagination is extraordinary and fun.” She also gave her followers an insight into her mother’s incredible life, revealing that she lived through the Great Depression, WWII, and sadly lost a baby to cancer.

Just two years after losing her husband, John, Kerri-Anne’s mother, Grace, has died.

BRAVE BERT’S HEALTH UPDATE

‘I’M DOING OK’ Three weeks after having his leg amputated in life-saving surgery, Bert Newton is doing well and staying positive. Taking to Instagram, his doting wife Patti Newton shared a touching image of the iconic TV personality, 82, sitting in a wheelchair beside his hospital bed. Bert appears to be in good spirits, smiling from ear to ear as he posed with one of his six grandchildren, Lola, 7, by his side. “I wanted to show you Bert’s doing OK, still flirting

with the nurses and having a laugh,” Patti gushed. “Spending time with his darling Lola. And taking a day at a time. A long journey, but he’s blessed with so much love.” Bert underwent the intensive surgery to amputate his leg earlier this month, following complications with a toe infection. “He had a choice and his choice was to live,” Patti declared at the time. “It is going to be a long journey, but we are all very positive.”

Bert was pictured in hospital following his life-saving surgery.

TH ABOUT LORD SUGAR! FORGET THE APPRENTICES – THE CEO HAS A LOT TO ANSWER FOR

MISS MONEYPENNY’S A FAKE!

Miss MoneyPenny’s looks by Cappellazzo Couture.

She’s the runaway hero of the series, becoming a fan favourite thanks to her fabulous fashion sense, but New Idea’s on-set spies have revealed that Alan Sugar’s EA, Miss MoneyPenny, is indeed a fake! The insider says that not only is the breakout star not the Lord’s executive assistant – she’s a hired model. The source explains that Celebrity Apprentice is, in fact, her first foray into the television industry and, apart from her exciting new gig, she still has a day job outside of the boardroom. 6

O

ver the past few weeks, sharpshooting CEO Lord Alan Sugar has been very critical, often sceptical, of this year’s stars, who are currently fighting it out for the top spot on Celebrity Apprentice. But despite his success as a business magnate and his impressive peerage title, it seems the Lord is no stranger to scandal. In 2018, Alan came under fire after he posted a tweet about the Senegal World Cup squad, where he compared the players to people selling sunglasses and handbags on beaches.

The tweet featured a photoshopped picture of the team looking as though they were selling counterfeit goods. “I recognise some of these guys from the beach in Marbella. Multitasking, resourceful chaps,” he sneered. Many fans felt the tweet was racist and Alan managed to dig himself a bigger hole when he refused to apologise. “I can’t see what I have to apologise for, you are OTT, it’s a bloody joke,” he sprayed on his Twitter page. What’s more, for years Alan has been engaged in a public feud with English TV anchor, Piers Morgan, even going as far as to brand him a “coward” after a spat over the UK government’s management of the pandemic. Fast forward to last year, the 74-year-old then found himself in hot water after sharing coronavirusrelated conspiracy theories online, causing an uproar from unhappy fans.

BRAD’S BIG WIN

5-YEAR FIGHT FOR KIDS OVE

Following a long and emotionally taxing custody battle, Brad Pitt has finally been granted joint custody of his children with Angelina Jolie, after a judge made a tentative ruling in the actor’s favour. “He’s so relieved,” sources tell. “His only intention is to spend more time with the kids.” The couple’s headline-making divorce has seen Brad, 57, fighting for nearly five years for equal rights to their five youngest children. Judge John Ouderkirk, the private judge hired by the two stars to oversee the case, made his thoughts clear in a lengthy ruling last week, after hearing from multiple testimonies. “Brad was just trying to have more time with his kids, it has been clear that Ange has done everything possible to prevent this,” another source revealed after the decision was made. Judge Ouderkirk is the same person Angelina made a legal bid to try and disqualify from the case last year. The actress claimed that the judge, who also married the couple, failed to properly disclose his involvement with the law firm representing Brad. The court, however, denied the motion. But Ange, 45, is dedicated to challenging her ex. On May 24, she reportedly filed a complaint over the custody ruling and the judge presiding over the case. According to the Associated Press, Ange’s

lawyers alleged in the filing that “Judge Ouderkirk denied Ms Jolie a fair trial, improperly excluding her evidence relevant to the children’s health, safety and welfare, evidence critical to making her case”. They also claimed that the judge “refused to hear the minor teenagers’ input as to their experiences, needs, or wishes as to their custody fate”. Ange’s lawyers cited a California code that permits minors over 14 to testify in custody cases if they want to, making Pax, 17, Zahara, 16, and Shiloh, 15, all eligible, while 12-year-old twins Vivienne and Knox would be exempt. Maddox, 19, is no longer subject to the raging custody battle.

Angelina and Brad have been at war over their kids for almost five years.

JEN GUSHES OVER BRAD! Although Jennifer Aniston’s marriage to Brad Pitt might have come to an end more than 15 years ago, she has nothing but love for her ex. The actress sat down with Friends co-stars

Courteney Cox and Lisa Kudrow to deliberate over some of the famous faces who guest-starred in the sitcom over the years. “Mr Pitt was wonderful. [He was] fantastic!” gushed the 52-year-old, as Courteney and Lisa agreed with the star. Brad famously appeared in Season 8 of Friends in 2002, starring as Ross’ friend, Will (left), who had been holding a grudge against Rachel, played by Jen – his wife at the time. 7

SCIENTOLOGY BIRTH THE ‘WOKE’ COUPLE HAVE REQUESTED NO NOISE IN THE DELIVERY ROOM!

R

ecently, it’s been revealed that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are testing out a plethora of alternative ways to heal the psychological trauma they allegedly experienced at the hands of the royal family. Happily settled into their new lives in California, which is considered by many to be the therapy capital of the world, the couple have plenty of science-based and alternative health avenues at their fingertips. Prince Harry, 36, has undergone EMDR (eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing) treatment, which is used to treat posttraumatic stress disorder. Meanwhile, last week it was reported his pregnant wife has been using reiki touch techniques on herself and their 2-year-old son, Archie. Now, New Idea can reveal the couple were considering a silent birth for the imminent arrival of their baby girl. “Meghan and Harry feel they’ve been through enough 8

in their own lives and are anxious to start over with their baby girl, and that means giving her the most peaceful entrance possible into the world,” explains one well-placed source. “There will be no doctors screaming ‘push’ at Meghan or anything like that.” Of course, giving birth in silence is a practice preferred by the Church of Scientology. They believe “any words

“It seems Harry and Meghan are more openminded than people realised,” says a source. “And after Harry admitted to medicating himself

‘THE CHURCH HAS ITS SIGHTS FIRMLY SET ON RECRUITING THEM’ spoken are recorded in the reactive mind and can have an aberrant effect on mother and baby”. Famously, Katie Holmes was allegedly advised to make as little noise as possible when she gave birth to Suri, her daughter with Scientology poster boy Tom Cruise, in 2006. Tom also confirmed he’d asked everyone present in the birthing room to remain mute. News of the silent birth comes as New Idea has exclusively learnt the church has its sights set firmly on recruiting the Sussexes. According to our LA-based insider, there is a huge Scientology building in Ventura, near where Harry and Meghan, 39, live in Montecito that leaders are desperate to show them.

with alcohol and drugs, the church feels he would be perfect to undergo their purification run-down, and the Ventura facility happens to have a state-of-the-art section for that purpose. “Ventura is not a celebrity area, so they’d have privacy to explore without a bunch of

photographers tailing them.” A source close to the couple, who’s known Harry for more than 10 years, adds: “When Harry and Meghan first moved to Los Angeles, everyone joked they would get into Hollywood stuff like Scientology and crystal healing. But now, given that he’s happy to televise a therapy session involving a lot of blinking and tapping away his worst memories, it sounds entirely feasible.”

New footage of little Archie appeared in Harry’s Apple TV+ mental health series, and royal watchers couldn’t help but notice he looks the spitting image of his mum, Meghan, at a similar age!

ANDREW MORTON EXCLUSIVE

THE TRUTH ABOUT DIANA & THE PRINCES’ FEUD Princess Diana s personal biographer, Andrew Morton, has spoken out in the wake of the BBC investigation into the revelatory Martin Bashir interview. Morton, the author of Diana, Her True Story, tells New Idea he agrees the disgraced journalist was out of line when he “scared Diana half to death” and “deceived her” by showing her falsified documents and bank statements during the infamous 1995 Panorama interview. Despite the deception, Morton believes Diana was still an active and willing participant in the bombshell interview. “Ironically, she wanted to speak out – first of all talking to me for the biography, and later with Bashir,” Morton says. Meanwhile, the

respected royal author believes the root of the current feud between Diana’s sons, Princes William and Harry, stems back to her death in 1997, and the differing ways they processed the tragedy. “What is absolutely clear is that both William and Harry have been scarred by the shattering experience of walking behind their mother’s coffin,” Morton tells New Idea. “Harry needs to unravel his relationship with [father] Prince Charles. Now, it seems he blames his father for his struggles with his mother’s death.”

Journalist Martin Bashir falsified documents he showed Diana during their interview.

arah Ferguson is standing firmly by her former mother-in-law, the Queen’s, side as the family rift between the royals and the Sussexes grows even wider. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s recent claims about their perceived ill-treatment has rocked the royals – in particular Her Majesty. Adding insult to injury, the monarch is still mourning

The Queen has always had a soft spot for Fergie, despite her many scandals over the years.

Fergie joined her daughter to tell the Queen about the pregnancy.

E VOWS TO QUEEN

ILL MAKE GHAN PAY’ the passing of her husband of 73 years, Prince Philip. Royal author Phil Dampier confirms to New Idea that the royal family have rallied around the Queen, 95, with Fergie and her ex-husband, Prince Andrew, unexpectedly emerging as key supporters. “Andrew has always been the Queen’s favourite son. Despite his fall from grace, he is the one supporting her privately,” Dampier confirms. “He and Fergie are frequent visitors to Windsor Castle and Sarah often walks her dogs with the Queen.” Although the divorced Yorks have maintained a tight-knit relationship, both Prince Philip, while he was alive, and the Queen held Fergie at arm’s length on account of her myriad personal scandals. However, Dampier hints The Queen is “delighted” that Princess Beatrice and her husband, Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, are expecting. “This news will cheer her up and give her strength going forward,” says royal author Phil Dampier.

that the Queen’s relationship with Fergie has slowly thawed in recent times. “With Prince Philip’s passing, she is likely to see a lot more of [Fergie] with Andrew,” Dampier explains. Now, royal insiders reveal Fergie, 61, made a personal vow to the Queen during one of their intimate walks, where she reaffirmed her loyalty to the Crown and told her she would hit back at Harry and Meghan’s constant attacks. “Enough is enough,” says the source. “Fergie can’t believe the disrespect that is being shown to the Queen.” Fergie has had little time for the Sussexes ever since they seemingly upstaged her daughter, Princess Eugenie, by announcing their first pregnancy on her wedding day in 2018. According to sources, it was Fergie who masterminded

her eldest daughter, Princess Beatrice, announcing her own pregnancy on Meghan and Harry’s recent third wedding anniversary to “even the score”. This game of oneupmanship shows no signs of stopping, says the source – especially after it was revealed that Harry effectively lied to his grandmother about his Apple TV+ series. The Queen

gave Harry her blessing in 2018 thinking it was just about mental health. But sources said last week the “gobsmacked” monarch had “no idea” Harry would use the show to accuse his family of total neglect.

HARRY’S LITTLE WHITE LIES Harry’s determined to tell the world what he and Meghan describe as “their truth”. But royal pundits are questioning if he’s shared a few porky pies, especially after some of the more lurid claims he made in the Apple TV+ series, The Me You Can’t See, quickly become unstuck. Firstly, Harry insisted his son Archie’s first words were “Grandma Diana”, apparently due to there being a photo of the late Princess of Wales in his nursery. However, Harry had previously insisted on James Corden’s TV show that Archie’s first utterance was “Crocodile – three syllables”. Harry also complained that he was the family’s ‘yes man’ when it came to royal tours, and suffered from burnout from too much travel. He referred to a four-day visit to Nepal in March 2016 as one of his breaking points. But insiders point out that the only official journey he’d taken prior to that was a four-day excursion in November 2015 to his beloved

South Africa four months earlier. Harry also shared that his time in the military on the frontline in Afghanistan was when he felt most at home as he was treated just like anyone else. Since then, several people have claimed the prince’s nickname was ‘Bunker Harry’, as he was actually extremely protected due to his royal status. And while Harry is praising Meghan for getting him into therapy after they had a heated argument, an on-record interview in 2017 begs to differ. Back then, he credited his now-estranged brother, Prince William, with getting him professional help to deal with losing their mother. 11

HARRY & MEGHAN’S

NEW TV MOVIE The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s departure from the royal family has played out in front of our eyes. But now, the tale is set to get a dramatic retelling in Lifetime’s new film, Harry & Meghan: Escaping The Palace. Last week, fans were treated to the first glimpse of the film when

Lifetime shared an image of two actors – Sydney Morton, who will play Meghan, and Jordan Dean, who will star as Harry – dressed identical to Harry and Meghan at the Commonwealth Day Service 2020. This was their final engagement as senior royal family members. 13

F

rom floods and mud slides, to hostage situations and terrifying car crashes, Home and Away has served up no shortage of crazy plot lines in its 33-year history. But it seems the drama isn’t reserved to Summer Bay’s

residents, with insiders telling New Idea that behind the scenes, a war is brewing among the show’s cast and crew over pay and fame. According to a well-placed insider, a divide between the junior cast and the show’s longstanding stars has emerged, causing a division

on the famous set. And with rumours that Bec Hewitt and Kate Ritchie are being offered the big bucks to return (see breakout, right), fireworks are beginning to explode! The source says the show’s veteran stars are starting to begrudge the young cast members who feel they are

entitled to bigger cheques – despite many of them only seeing Home and Away as their ticket to Tinseltown stardom rather than a long-term career. When TV executive Rob McKnight was approached for comment, he explained: “The veterans on the show know how hard it is to get consistent work as an actor, so they are happy to have a job, whereas new talents are just looking at their roles [on these soaps] as a stepping stone to Hollywood. “You can’t blame the older cast for resenting those who don’t respect the decades-long history of the show and what they feel they have helped build. Shows like Home and Away and Neighbours are legacy brands which will still be here long after the new.” Indeed, while recent Home and Away alum such as Chris

Kate & Bec BACK WITH A BANG!

WAR Hemsworth, Isabel Lucas, Rebecca Breeds, Luke Mitchell and Samara Weaving have all found varying degrees of success in Hollywood, it’s not the endgame for all. “Not everyone wants to be in the blockbusters!” laughs New Idea’s insider. “Ada [Nicodemou] leads a very comfortable life, Georgie [Parker] always wanted to stay put and raise her daughter … they’re just a different breed to these millennials,” says the insider. Rob, who previously produced Channel Seven’s Sunrise and The Morning Show, says that an increasing amount of newcomers on Home and Away struggle to see the appeal in the famous soap. “The older cast have seen hot new things come and go – eventually they all

leave, despite the level of fame they achieve. There are a few exceptions who play their cards right and move on to other projects within the network,” he says. Another source of contention behind the scenes is said to be contract changes that were put in place recently, which limits the endorsements and ambassadorships available to the young stars. “Things have changed so much. Years ago, the young ones on the smaller salaries did weekend nightclub appearances and earned thousands on top to subsidise their measly pay, but production has stopped all that,” dishes the insider, who adds Channel Seven must “approve all endorsements prior”, making it difficult for them to earn additional pay.

The divide between the veteran actors and Summer Bay’s starlets could be about to widen, with rumours ramping up about the return of Home and Away’s legacy stars Kate Ritchie and Bec Hewitt. This year, both the actresses have dropped hints about making a comeback, and while fans will no doubt be elated if they do, New Idea’s on-set source says it wouldn’t go down so well with the young stars. “As deals and opportunities dry up for the young guns, the last thing they need is two big names returning to steal the spotlight from their characters,” tells a source, who says reintroducing characters like Sally Fletcher (Kate) and Hayley Smith (Bec) would “eradicate” a lot of the screen time for the smaller characters. Rob McKnight, who hosts the popular video podcast The Anj, Rob & Robbo Show, says that bringing back the likes of Kate and Bec would be costly. “Returning characters are always a big drawcard, but they come with a price,” he reveals. “Especially if they still have

The duo have made no secret of the fact they both would be open-minded about returning to the popular soap.

successful careers. A Kate Ritchie cameo will cost the network big bucks as she has her radio gig, and the accountants need to assess whether that will drive more viewers to the show,” he muses. Interestingly, our insider maintains that it’s unlikely both actors would be called back, due to costs. “Bec was paid a lot to return to DWTS, so she might want a fortune for Home and Away,” dishes the source. “It would likely come down to producers having to choose between the pair.”

Introducing the Magnificent Seven! For now, J.Lo and Ben’s kids are “all very curious about each other”, says a close friend.

MODERN FA

THE COUPLE’S KIDS HAVE GIVEN THEM THE THUMBS UP!

T

he biggest difference this time around for Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck is there are now five kids to factor into their rebooted romance! Friends say the smitten couple are making “every 16

effort” to blend their brood as smoothly as possible – yet there might still be some hurdles to overcome. Ben’s three kids with ex-wife Jennifer Garner – daughters Violet, 15, and Seraphina, 12, and son Samuel, 9 – are “ecstatic” about their new soon-to-be stepmum, but they haven’t had to deal with step-siblings before. “This is a whole new ball game and the stakes are high,” dishes a family pal. “Violet and Seraphina were begging their dad to ask Jennifer out back in

January, so they’re incredibly excited about it all. They’re both taking credit for the matchmaking, which is cute. “Ben’s kids are very laid-back, but Jen’s twins are very passionate – it could be like mixing oil and water.” Indeed, J.Lo’s 13-year-old twins, Max and Emme, were very close to her ex-fiancé Alex Rodriguez and his two daughters. According to the friend, the sudden change in their mum’s love life hasn’t been easy, especially for Emme. Just hours before rumours

of her split from A-Rod were made public in March, J.Lo posted a picture of Emme sobbing on her dad Marc Anthony’s shoulder. “Emme had really bonded with Alex’s girls, so she took it hard when [their parents] split,” says the family pal. “It was so sudden and so final – it could be hard for her to open up again. “Emme and Max do know why their mum ended things, and all about the cheating rumours, so they have come to terms with it. But opening

MILY! up to a whole new cache of step-siblings so soon could be too much. “Luckily for Ben, the twins are a bit showbiz-obsessed and there’s no doubt an Oscar winner is an upgrade from a retired baseballer.” Friends say the couple’s former spouses, Marc Anthony and Jennifer Garner, are fully behind the new romance. “To see them finally, after all this time, so happy – it’s only a good thing,” adds the pal. “Marc and Jen have both agreed to give Ben

and J.Lo as much time as they both need. “Teenage sibling rivalries aside, everyone’s very excited about this romance.” With talk that J.Lo, 51, and Ben, 48, are fast-tracking plans to tie the knot, the source says it’s not out of the question that their party of seven could soon get another member. “More kids are definitely on the horizon. Jen had plans to adopt two more babies with A-Rod, so she will have cleared it with Ben before taking any more serious steps with him.”

J.LO L AYS DOWN THE DATING LAW While Ben and J.Lo are moving full steam ahead, their reconciliation comes with a few ground rules the actor needs to follow – namely “no strip clubs and no partying in general”, spills a source. Back in July 2003, exotic dancer Tammy Morris claimed Ben cheated on J.Lo with her. While Ben denied the claims, he and J.Lo called off their $2 million wedding just a few months later. “Jennifer was mortified,” a source reveals. “She isn’t taking any chances this time around. Ben knows he’s behaved badly

in the past, but insists he’s changed. He completely understands Jennifer’s reservations and has agreed to her rules. Ben is just happy that J.Lo took him back. He’ll do anything to keep her happy this time.”

The couple spent time together in Miami on May 23, where J.Lo was caught snapping selfies on the balcony.

B

rynne Edelsten’s bedazzled life has come crashing down around her, after she was charged with possession and trafficking of the drug ice. The controversial ex-wife of businessman Geoffrey Edelsten is reportedly facing three charges of trafficking, possessing and using methylamphetamine after being arrested on May 11 following a raid on a property in Melbourne’s Boronia. 18

BRYNNE’S

Victorian police claim they found magic mushrooms, methylamphetamine and prescription drugs at a property visited by Brynne. The socialite, 38, was allegedly spoken to by police and let go, but later that day she was arrested and charged. According to the Drugs, Poisons and Controlled Substances Act 1981, in Victoria, the maximum penalty for trafficking or attempting to traffic methylamphetamine is 15 years’ imprisonment. Brynne, who is set to appear at Ringwood Magistrates’ Court on October 8, intends to fight all charges. “I am shocked and saddened by these events and will be vigorously fighting all charges. I am very thankful for the

support of the team aroun me,” she said. It’s not the first time US-born Brynne has had a run-in with the law. In 2015, she faced charges in Perth for possession of MDMA, commonly known as ecstasy. The charges against Brynne were dropped following a court hearing. She told reporters outside the Perth Magistrates’ Court: “I don’t condone the use of drugs.” This new shock turn of events comes after Brynne sat down with New Idea in March to exclusively reveal she was happier than ever with her new partner, Brok Eastwood. “I just love spending time

with him and he makes me smile every day,” she said. She added that she knew “right away” Brok was the one and admitted they had already discussed marriage, as well as starting a family together in the future.

Michelle says she fondly remembers watching the first season of ACP while in Year 12, idolising Lorrae and the cast. “I remember thinking, ‘I just really want to be on that show,’” she recalls. And while Lorrae had accolades and a booming public profile – her résumé included roles on Homicide and Number 96, and even a position on Australia’s entertainment unit

‘SHE WAS SO LOVING AND TRULY SO HAPPY TO OFFER ADVICE’ “Lorrae was a consummate professional and was always entirely prepared,” recalls Michelle, who appeared on ACP as Nurse Kate Bryant opposite Lorrae’s treasured character, Shirley Gilroy. “As is the case of actors who play roles for some time, your personal habits and life – even your fashion sense – tend to bleed into your character, so it was sometimes hard to work out where Lorrae stopped and Shirley started – she broke the mould!”

She would turn up at location in the freezing cold weather at the crack of dawn and they’d whack a quick breakfast in her, and on she would go,” laughs the actress. In fact, Michelle – who is married to Australian singer, Frankie J. Michelle says she also enjoyed nothing more than hosting soirees at her home. “She would sometimes have us over to her lovely place. We went there a couple of times – she was just a brilliant entertainer,” Michelle remembers. “She would have a handful of the young cast over for lunch – they were such special affairs. Speaking to Maxim in 2015 about her royal family ties, Katrina said she felt “kind of bad” for Kate once the media discovered who she was. “All of a sudden there are photos of this stripper girl all over.” She went on to admit her Cambridge connections have opened up a lot of

WILLS’ WILD NIGHT OUT

He recently celebrated 10 years of wedded bliss with his wife, Kate Middleton. But back in 2017, Prince William was caught getting cosy with an Australian model while on a Swiss ski trip. At the time, embarrassing videos emerged of the future king partying with friends at the Farinet nightclub in Verbier. He was then seen chatting with 24-year-old bikini model, Sophie Taylor, before putting his hand on her waist. One onlooker said Wills was drinking and dancing until the early hours. At one point, he flirtatiously grabbed Sophie’s cowboy hat. “We couldn’t believe it when we saw photos of her dancing with Prince William,” one of Sophie’s close friends told The Sun. “Sophie’s stunned by the attention and said she was totally unprepared for it.”

Shortly after the footage of ‘Wild Wills’ went viral, it was revealed that the Duchess of Cambridge was far from happy with her husband’s antics while she stayed home with the kids. “It’s known she doesn’t like it when he goes off on his own stag dos and such things,” royal reporter Katie Nicholl said. “As a couple, they’re very careful of their image and what they project. This is definitely not the image that Kate wants to convey.” Since rubbing shoulders with royalty, Sophie has settled down and is now married with two children, having recently welcomed her second child – a baby girl – on May 18. Her Instagram account is no longer filled with pictures of her travel adventures and late-night shenanigans. Instead, it shows off her beautiful family. 27

TIMES ARE TOUGH FOR ONE OF AUSSIE TV’S BIGGEST NAMES

She was once a regular on the box, but Rowena hasn’t worked on-screen in years.

O

nce upon a time, Rowena Wallace was the undisputed queen of Australian TV. She dominated the box and became a beloved household name, starring in treasured shows such as Number 96, Cop Shop and, of course, Sons and Daughters, where she played the formidable Patricia Hamilton. But it’s been nine long years since the showbiz icon last graced the small screen – and her new life of obscurity is proving to be a hard pill to swallow. These days, Rowena is out of work, cash-strapped and mourning the life she led before she decided to relocate to the sleepy coastal town of Wonthaggi in Victoria – which she says, in hindsight, took her out of the spotlight. “I miss working incredibly!” Rowena, now 73, tells New Idea in her signature raspy tone. “I miss the whole spectrum of acting and what goes into it. I never had a job I didn’t like – I always

had so much fun being on set.” Like most people, 2020 unfortunately put Rowena’s career in further turmoil when her role in Opera Australia’s production of The Secret Garden fell over as a result of the

“I can take any role. I’ll do anything, so long as I don’t have to run,” she says, bursting into a loud cackle. “I’m very open to taking on new work, but moving away from Sydney and Melbourne

was probably not a good idea. “Who’s going to send a bloody taxi for Rowena in Wonthaggi?” But all hope is not lost for the star, who is open-minded about her future. Indeed, it’s not just a Sons and Daughters reboot she’s eyeing off –

though Rowena confesses she would jump at the chance to play her famous villain, Pat the Rat, again. No, Rowena is open to all sorts of ideas. “I think we need more roles for older women,” she proclaims. “I never forget my lines, I am quite capable!” But while the actress seems to be overlooked for TV dramas and scripted comedies, she admits she wouldn’t rule out taking on a reality show. When asked if she would consider joining the upcoming celebrity editions of MasterChef or Big Brother, she says: “Work is work – I’m on the pension, I’ve got two dogs to feed, so I wouldn’t say no.” 29

The seasoned professional says she would happily take a call from a casting director to reignite her career. “I’m still here, you know. I’m alive!” she confidently shouts. “Look, if I happen to click in someone’s mind, I would be so happy to be considered for something. “It would be better than winning the Powerball!” she says, laughing. Over the years, Rowena has made no secret of her financial difficulties, revealing she “doesn’t have much left” after she pays her bills. It’s a grim reality for the Englishborn star, who is facing having her electricity cut off. “The pension is ridiculous – you can’t pay for anything.” Worse than financial 30

discomfort, Rowena says the uncertainty of not having enough money has left her feeling terribly anxious. “I hate owing money, like everybody does, and the anxiety of them threatening to turn the power off is terrible.” With a glimmer of hope in her eye, Rowena prays she will return to our screens soon. “I’ve always had this feeling that someone has grabbed my forelock, and pulled me and tugged me and taken me places – hopefully that will happen soon,” she says. “The thing is, you go in and out of fashion – we all do! H TRIPLETS THE WAY! LIFE’S ABOUT TO GET EVEN BUSIER FOR THIS FAMILY

K

aren and Deon Derrico always wanted a big family, but never in their wildest dreams did they imagine how large their brood would grow. The couple have a knack for making multiples, meaning Karen has only been pregnant six times – but has 11 children, with three more on the way! Her eldest two, Darian, 14, and Derrick, 9, were both born individually. They were followed by twins Dallas and Denver, 8, then quintuplets Deniko, Dariz, Deonee, Daician and Daiten, 6, then twins Diez and Dior, 2. Now, the big family, from The couple share their pregnancy journey in a new TV series.

Las Vegas, are sharing their life in a new television series, Doubling Down with the Derricos, which follows Karen’s latest pregnancy with triplets. “Our highlight was showing the authentic love we have for one another and our ability to overcome challenges we are faced with daily,” Karen, 41, tells New Idea. “We aren’t faced with any more challenges than any other family.” Karen and Deon tell how upon meeting one another on a night out, it was love at first sight. “My roommate wanted to go out one night and made me go with her,” Karen recalls. “Deon was on the dance floor by himself and I thought he was so bold. I walked up to him and that’s it.” The couple’s relationship went from strength to strength and they eventually tied the knot. They’d always dreamt of having a big family, but their journey to parenthood wasn’t easy. “We lost the first two pregnancies,” says Karen. “I was devastated. When I lost

the second one, I wondered if this dream of ours wasn’t going to become a reality.” Doctors told Karen that she suffered from secondary infertility, where women can get pregnant but struggle to sustain a pregnancy to full term. Thankfully, when Karen fell pregnant again, shots of progesterone helped her carry her baby to full term. While two more miscarriages followed, the couple’s luck turned – Karen was pregnant again with twins! “I would hear stories of people having multiple multiples all of the time, but never thought it would happen to me. No-one in my family had multiples. When I had the twins, the doctor told me it was common to have another set of multiples, but I was just like ‘whatever’. A year and a half later, I was pregnant with five. It was unbelievable!” The mum says that life in the Derrico house is like a “dance recital”. “We enter gracefully in the morning and we go through different musical themes as the day goes on,” she says. Mealtimes are chaotic and their grocery bill costs more than $4000 per month to feed everyone. “At dinner, everyone has a task,” she says. “We really instil togetherness, we are a team and no one person is bigger than the big picture.”

REAL LIFE

It was love at first sight for Deon and Karen.

Despite the chaos, Karen and Deon still manage to find time for one another. “When we get through the day and everyone has been put down to bed, we’ll recap on the day or watch TV. We really enjoy each other’s company,” she smiles. “Our relationship has evolved into something we could have never imagined. I have a phenomenal husband who helps me and our children to have fun. At the beginning of our journey, we didn’t know we would get to this point, so we don’t take any days for granted.” When the Derricos were approached to do a series about their lives, they jumped at the opportunity. “We didn’t have anyone to go and ask: ‘Hey, what’s it like having quins?’ Or anyone tangible to learn from about navigating life with 14 children,” says Deon, 50. “We want to send the message to others not to give up.” “As a mother, you have to wear a lot of hats and I really wanted to bring to the forefront that you are not alone and we are in this together,” adds Karen. REAL LIFE The Hopday family – mum Claudia, son Arthur, daughter Zoe and husband Ben – have been through so much.

I SPOTTED MY DAUGHTER’S CLAUDIA HOPDAY’S SHOCK DISCOVERY SAVED HER DAUGHTER’S LIFE

F

or most parents, celebrating their child’s birthday is a time for joy and happiness. But for mum Claudia Hopday, on the day her daughter Zoe turned 4, her family’s lives changed forever.

34

After tucking Zoe into bed following a day of festivities, Claudia settled down to look over photos from the party – only to make a shocking discovery. As she glanced upon a photo of her daughter looking cross-eyed, she knew something was very wrong.

A series of tests revealed that little Zoe had a tumour behind her left eye, caused by neurofibromatosis (NF). What’s more, Claudia and her eldest son Arthur, 10, also had the hereditary condition, which causes tumours to form in the brain, spinal cord and nerves. Now, the family are hoping to bring light to the condition that affects one in 2500 adults and children in Australia. “Every day we learn new

things about NF,” Claudia, 34, from Wyoming, NSW tells New Idea. “What was initially quite overwhelming has simply become a part of who we are now, but that does not mean we are not vigilant of how quickly things can change.” Growing up, Claudia had no idea that she had type 1 NF. She spent her whole life unaware there was even such a condition until her daughter was diagnosed. After looking through the

m Claudia noticed aughter Zoe’s eye looked crossed shortly after her th birthday party.

THE PHOTO THATCHANGED EVERYTHING ! photos of Zoe’s birthday, Claudia suspected something might be amiss. She noticed Zoe’s left eye seemed crossed. “I dismissed it and thought she was probably just excited and tired,” she recalls. But after monitoring it for a couple of days, Claudia took her kids to get their eyes tested. While Arthur’s eyes were perfect. Zoe was referred onto an ophthalmologist. After hours of seemingly benign tests, Claudia was told to take Zoe straight to the children’s hospital for an MRI. “The ophthalmologist said she thought something was pushing up against her eye. We were eventually admitted and were told they suspected she had neurofibromatosis, and that I had it, too,” she says. A neurologist confirmed Zoe had a tumour on her left optic nerve, and that both her and Claudia had the condition. What’s more, they encouraged Arthur to be tested, too. “It was so overwhelming,” Claudia recalls. “At first I was

crying all the time. I would never cry in front of the kids, but it would be in the shower, when she was sleeping.” Just three weeks later,

check for malignancies.” She was told she had traductal papilloma, a type f benign lump, and that it ad to be surgically removed. That same year, Arthur as diagnosed, too. “At that point it wasn’t shock, we suspected it lready,” recalls Claudia. The mum says that assing on the condition to er children weighs on her. “If I had known earlier, would have gone down e IVF route to have Arthur and Zoe,” she adds. While Zoe can’t see through her left eye, she is rebuilding her strength and thriving in kindergarten.

‘EVERY DAY WE ARE LEARNING NEW THINGS ABOUT NF’ Zoe had lost control of her eye, was disoriented and complaining of headaches. A visit to the doctor revealed the tumour had grown and she needed chemotherapy as soon as possible. “As we started to learn more about the condition and its potential impact, some pieces of my own story started to fall into place,” says Claudia. “In 2017, I had discovered a lump in my left breast, but was told it was not serious. In August 2019, another lump appeared in my right breast. Considering my NF diagnosis, I had a scan and two biopsies

“She is fantastic,” smiles Claudia. “Her hair has grown back now, so thick and beautiful, as well as gained all the weight she lost during chemo.”

What’s more, the Children’s Tumour Foundation offered support to the family. “They’ve been amazing,” says Claudia. “If you had any questions, they’d answer them. They’re always there if you need a shoulder to cry on.” Now, Claudia hopes to shine a light on the condition. While the Australian Government has, this year, committed to investing $8 million towards supporting the Children’s Tumour Foundation and neurofibromatosis research, more work needs to be done. “My hopes are, in the next few years, it gets out there and people are more aware and know what it is,” she says. “Some GPs have no idea what it is and the more we talk about it, the more we bring it forward, the more research there is and eventually a cure.” By Courtney Greatrex • For more information, visit the Children’s Tumour Foundation at ctf.org.au

rowing up, Nina Young didn’t have much to do with her father, Allan Ladd. She knew he went to prison, but she never asked why. That is, until her 20s when curiosity got the better of her. But nothing could have prepared Nina, 36, for what she found out – her dad Allan was a murderer. He was convicted of brutally strangling a woman to death in remote Western Australian bushland in 1977, then violently bashed a man 22 years later. The revelation would be enough for most people to shut down. Instead, Nina delved head first into

the subject, learning as much as she could about who her dad was and what he’d done. Nina turned her journey into a podcast, My Father The Murderer, in which she interviewed her mum, Denise, and visited the grave of Allan’s victim. Now, the mother-daughter duo have joined forces to share their experiences in a book told from their perspectives. “Putting my story out there was terrifying at first,” Nina tells New Idea. “But writing the book has given me an insight into how Mum was feeling at the time and what she went through with Allan.” Denise had seen an ad looking for volunteers to help prisoners with literacy and signed up. She met Allan inside the walls of Fremantle Prison. They fell in love, but Denise had no clue Nina as a child, pictured with her father, Allan, on the rare occasions he came to visit her.

what Allan had done. It would be two more years before she found out why Allan was in prison – for strangling a woman with his bare hands! After serving just seven years of his life sentence, Allan was released on parole and, that same year, Nina was born. By the time Denise discovered the truth, it was too late. Allan had revealed himself as a violent, dangerous man and Denise fled from him in the night to start a new life as a single mother. Allan didn’t play a huge role in Nina’s upbringing, instead she was raised by her step-dad, Pete. “I didn’t think of Allan as my father, just a cool guy with long hair and a motorbike who would sometimes visit,” she recalls. Eventually, he stopped coming around and their relationship was distant.

When she was 7, Nina asked her mum about him. “She said that my father was in prison, but for some reason I never probed into why.” For many years, she did her best to not think of her father. But Allan came crashing into Nina’s life again when she was 15, while her mum was watching an episode of Australia’s Most Wanted. “Mum was watching TV and, when she saw I was looking, panicked and switched it off. Later she explained my father was on the run,” she says. He was wanted for the death of a man. A few weeks later, he was arrested and convicted of manslaughter. Rather than confront her feelings towards the revelation, Nina kept them buried deep until she was well into her 20s. “Curiosity got the better of me eventually,” she says. “I started seeking answers.” Nina documented the process in her six-part podcast series, where she travels back through the past to come face to face with the most painful parts of her family history. “The podcast did amazingly well,” she says. “I’ve had people contact me from all over the world. People who have been married to abusive men and even a daughter of a murderer, who said it was the first time she felt seen.”

While the podcast was an important part of Nina understanding her past, she wanted to give her mum that same voice. “I wanted to give her that empowering feeling of being able to tell her own story.” The duo took it in turns writing chapters for the book. For Nina, it was revelatory reading back her mum’s story. “I think she still blames herself too much,” says Nina. “There were some parts I hadn’t heard through her own words and what she went through. I really admire her.” Now, Nina says she is closer than ever with her mum. “I have really got an insight into how she was feeling and what she went through. Her only mistake was being a good person, who believed that people could change.” By Courtney Greatrex Allan met Nina’s mum, Denise, at Fremantle Prison (below).

SHARK

MURDER THE CASE OF A HUMAN LIMB SPAT UP BY A SHARK 86 YEARS AGO HAS FINALLY BEEN CRACKED

W The arm vomited up by a 4.4metre shark (opposite left) in Coogee (below) belonged to criminal, Jimmy Smith (right).

38

hen a newly caught 4.4-metre tiger shark made its home at Sydney’s Coogee Aquarium in 1935, crowds flocked to see it. But visitors got more than they bargained for when the shark spat up a human arm! As the screams filled the air, the limb was fished out of the water. Initially thought to be the result of a shark attack, a medical examination revealed the arm had been severed by a knife. On the arm was a prominent tattoo of two boxers, with a rope attached to the wrist. The intact fingers offered fingerprints for the police to track down who the arm belonged to. The arm’s owner was identified as Jimmy Smith, a small-time criminal who had been dealing with big-time players. The case became known as the ‘Shark Arm Murder’, and the bizarre mystery has never been solved.

ARM

MYSTERY Yet over the past year, new findings appear to have cracked the 86-year mystery. The book Shark Arm by Phillip Roope and Kevin Meagher pulls together long-forgotten details from deep within the NSW Police archives and exposes the most likely culprits. The release of the book elicited new details from beyond the grave, further confirming who was behind the murder. “This case is so much more bizarre than anything you could dream up,” says Phillip. He and Kevin spent more than a decade digging through the archives, before reaching their conclusions. “The disappearance of Jimmy Smith changed the day that shark spat out his arm, which made the people responsible do their best to cover up their tracks.” Smith was working with criminals specialising in fraud and smuggling. After one boat-sinking insurance scam went terribly wrong, Smith found himself on the outer in his criminal circle and so he

turned into a police informer. “To these people, there was nothing worse than an informer, so they wanted him out of the way – for good,” explains Phillip. Three weeks before the shark spat up his arm, it’s believed Smith was set up while drinking with his friend, the forger Patrick Brady, in a waterfront cottage. It’s believed Smith was then taken away by armed men,

The night before Holmes was due to give evidence at an inquest into Smith’s murder, he was found dead after being shot three times. The case against Brady fell apart and he was acquitted. Brady already claimed the last time he saw Smith alive was with boat proprietor Albert Stannard, who was also one of the last people to see Holmes alive. Stannard and waterfront heavy, J.P.

‘THE DISAPPEARANCE OF JIMMY SMITH CHANGED THE DAY THAT SHARK SPAT OUT HIS ARM’ killed and his body dumped at sea. His arm was later returned to the cottage as a warning for Brady to keep his mouth shut. Brady was eventually charged with Smith’s murder, but the investigation soon extended to another in the criminal ring, businessman Reg Holmes. After a failed attempt to take his own life, Holmes finally agreed to co-operate with police.

Strong, went on trial twice, but neither were convicted. In Shark Arm, Phillip and Kevin allege Stannard ordered the murder of Smith and Holmes. A shock confession after the book’s release confirmed the findings. “A woman made contact and told us about her grandfather, who had been a trusted and long-time Stannard boat driver –

The owner of the arm found at Coogee Aquarium (above) was identified through a distinctive tattoo of two boxers and fingerprints.

a claim we confirmed as true,” Phillip says. “She revealed her grandfather had claimed he was told not to come to work on the night Smith was murdered, as his boat was going to be used to kill and dump a man at sea. She was so accurate with the details, we were convinced she was telling the truth. This was the missing piece we needed.” Almost a century later, both murders officially remain unsolved and Phillip believes they will stay that way. But a review of the book by the NSW Police News stated: “The authors’ conclusions ring with veracity.” “We’re very happy with that and convinced we have finally solved this case.” By John Burfitt Shark Arm is available through Allen & Unwin, $32.99.

EAT YOUR GREENS

Focaccia recipe by Nico Moretti.

This dough will be quite wet, which gives it its characteristic soft crumb, so don’t be tempted to add extra flour.

Savoy cabbages have beautiful vibrant green leaves with lots of wrinkles, making them perfect for coleslaws and salads, as well as soups, stir-fries and casseroles. Thinly slice leaves and add to hot dishes just before serving. Cabbage doesn’t require much cooking – in fact, overcooking is what gives cabbage its bad name!

Q A

What’s the best way to store parmesan cheese?

Wrap the cheese tightly in a sheet of baking paper or greaseproof paper (not plastic wrap, as this will make it sweat) then store in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

Tips to make home life easy!

T

oo often, Australians approach their retirement years with dread. They fear they won’t have enough money to live on and, worse still, that somehow they’ll run out of money when they need it most. Although, you can have the retirement of your dreams and live a happy, wonderful life, thanks to tips from author and financial adviser, Patricia Howard.

DON’T GROW OLD AND GREY BEFORE YOUR TIME Don’t live your retirement the way your parents did or according to some outdated rule book. Most importantly, don’t skimp on the here and now so you can leave a nest egg for your children. Retirement is your big opportunity. Make the most of every single day. YOUR ‘HALF A MILLION’ RETIREMENT NEST EGG Every Australian is eligible for the age pension. While it is means tested, this is the equivalent of having $500,000 in retirement savings. Moreover, it’s secure, indexed for inflation and you 58

will never lose it – it’s your longlost retirement nest egg. There’s too much talk in the financial industry that you need a million dollars to retire. Don’t give up on your financial situation. There are still lots of strategies to help you make the most of your financial position, and taking advantage of the age pension is one of them.

in turn prompts many to take a risk with their hard-earned money. Your precious retirement savings are irreplaceable. Don’t put money into anything you don’t understand – and remember, retirement is all about generating as much income as you can, as safely as possible, with some capital growth.

MAKE GOOD CHOICES Just as a healthy diet focuses on good food choices, so too should you choose the right investment options. Think ‘high yielding dividends’ spiced up by ‘franking credits’ and served with a dish of ‘capital growth’ on the side. Retirement is a time in your life to make smart decisions about your health, stay fit and think long term. That’s the case for your finances, too. Make healthy financial decisions.

LIVE LIKE A MILLIONAIRE Learn to live off investments just like millionaires do. As John Travolta once said: “I learnt very early how millionaires live. They never spend their capital, just the income it generates, and they always get good advice.” Make sure you know exactly how much money your investments are generating and adjust your spending each year to stay within those limits. That’s the key to making sure you never run out of money.

GIVE UP THE ‘FINANCIAL SMOKES’! A key downside of the financial industry focusing so much attention on people needing a million dollars to retire is that it makes people anxious, and this

‘SLIDE’ INTO RETIREMENT These days, few people just stop working at age 65. Find a new mojo and slide your way into retirement. Find a side hustle, volunteer or turn a hobby into a business ‒ you just need to find your groove.

Words: Andrea Black.

MAKE RETIREMENT EARS

With some careful planning, money shouldn’t be a worry after your working years are done.

CONSIDERING A RETIREMENT VILLAGE?

If maintaining a large home sounds too hard, living independently in your own villa or apartment in a friendly and supportive community might be worth considering. Residents benefit from less household chores, less maintenance, and the increased time to enjoy living life and following their passions. A retirement village may not be for everyone, but according to Uniting Independent Living (uniting. org/villages), those who choose to make the move do agree that they should have done it sooner. Their advice? The best way to decide if a move to a village is right for you is to book a tour and chat to some of the residents about their experiences.

If you can monetise these extra activities or find a way of making some additional income from them, it will take some of the financial pressure off you in retirement and help make your money last that much longer.

SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED POVERTY It’s surprising how often love lives and financial affairs become intertwined. If you are living alone, step up and make sure you take control of your financial situation, and make sound decisions about what you do with your money. Be wary of romantic involvements and the scams that can come with them ‒ everything from sending money to online romantic encounters or backing your partner in a new business deal. Make sure you do your homework and look upon any money you give someone as a gift, not a loan. BUILD YOUR ‘ESCAPE HATCH’ Make sure you have a strategy outlining what you will do if all goes wrong. Again remember, you will always qualify for the age pension and you can’t lose it,

MOST IMPORTANTLY, ENJOY YOUR RETIREMENT Make good decisions to maximise your income in retirement and then get on with enjoying life. installing the correct items, then working out where and how things will be placed. It makes the process so much easier to have a clear idea before starting, and ultimately achieves the best results.

MAKE A PLAN You need to consider your space and what purpose your shed renovation will serve. To make the process as easy as possible, make a plan before you start so you know exactly what you’ll need, and that what you have in mind is practical. It’s important to consider things like if you need bench space or if your shed will be purely for storage.

BANG FOR BUCK You don’t need to spend a lot of money to renovate a shed – there are simple ways to achieve really fantastic results. A fresh coat of paint goes a long way and changes the whole appearance of the space dramatically, and a few cost-effective shelves from Bunnings can add substantial storage space. A great tip I used when renovating my shed is using storage tubs … to organise all your loose ends and maintain a neat appearance, and you can label each tub for easy access.

etting a pet is an exciting and momentous occasion in your life. But bringing them home can come with many extra costs, so consider the financial impact they may have before diving in.

START-UP COSTS “As they say, pets are for life, not just two weeks of holidays, so you need to plan to look after them for approximately 15 years,” says financial adviser Helen Baker. Helen notes that the expenses of owning a pet are varied, from the initial outset of acquiring a particular breed, to the set-up costs, through to their food and treats and finally, their ongoing veterinary care. 62

IS INSURANCE WORTH IT? Unsurprisingly, the first year of pet ownership is the most expensive, with the RSPCA estimating the cost of getting a dog to be somewhere between $2350 to $5220 in the first year. After this, it’s estimated a dog costs around $1500 per year. Because of this, more people are considering pet insurance, with 30 per cent of dog owners and 21 per cent of cat owners purchasing protection to cover unexpected trips to the vet. “Just like all insurances it is a management of risk – you are protecting yourself if something happens, while the insurer is protecting the money pool for future claims,” says Helen. She adds, “What is your back-up plan if something goes

wrong and you don’t have insurance? Can you afford the care? Investigate the cost of a health event for your pet versus the cost of insurance. Does it make financial sense?” SIMPLE TIPS TO SAVE If pet insurance doesn’t suit you, Dr Lee Danks, technical services veterinarian at Black Hawk Pet Care, believes that some veterinary costs can be avoided by keeping your pet in tiptop shape. “So many of the everyday conditions that we see in practice have some form of a nutritional element,” he says. “Obesity is most prevalent, [along with] dental disease or gastrointestinal disease, [and] mobility issues. These all have some interplay with nutrition. If we are going to do the pets of Australia

SH a favour, then put them on a higher level of nutrition.” Dr Danks explains that good nutrition is the one thing that should never be scrimped on. And while making your own pet food to cut costs can be tempting, he advises that you are rarely saving money and could be depriving your pet of vital nutrition – which could prove more costly in the long run.

Michelly De Almeida is a volunteer mentor who recently supported a WAGEC mentee to work towards financial independence. “Sometimes all we need is one person who believes in us, who trusts us, so we can keep going,” she explains. Throughout six months of mentoring, Michelly and her mentee worked to develop goals, tailor resumes and explore job opportunities. All the while her mentee, a single mother in WAGEC’s crisis accommodation, was studying full-time at university. Michelly says she was regularly blown away by her mentee’s resilience and dedication to her future and her family. “I had to constantly stop while we were talking over the phone to just say, “Girl, you are amazing.” As someone who had migrated to Australia, studied full-time and paved her way one step at a time, Michelly used her own experience to offer hope. New to the Australian market, Stella Insurance is a female-first, purposedriven business created by women, for women. Stella is building a community to help educate, support and empower women to balance the gender bias in matters such as insurance – and life at large. Starting with car insurance, Stella designs products and customer experiences that prioritise women. It strives to partner with like-minded people and organisations to drive practical and progressive change. Stella has recently partnered with Women’s and Girls’ Emergency Centre (WAGEC), which supports women and children in crisis to build safe futures. Together, they want to end genderbased violence in a generation. At WAGEC, their 44 years of experience combined with research evidence from Our Watch, Australia’s national prevention organisation has identified that access to economic safety and financial independence are crucial to breaking the cycle of violence. Our Watch’s Change the Story framework for primary prevention of violence against women and their children shows that promoting women’s independence, economic security and decision-making in public life and relationships is essential to driving change. This is why WAGEC

SIGN OF THE TIMES Are there coincidences in your life that sometimes seem a little too coincidental? This might be a sign to take a moment to note down and observe – either in your phone or your journal – what the universe is trying to tell you. “Start with the little things – like when you think of someone and then you see them, or they call you later that day,” suggests Sheila. “Notice when you put a thought or wish out to the universe and watch how the answer will come to you later that same day or week. That is your intuition speaking to you. When you document these instances, you will start to trust your intuition more.” • Sheila Vijeyarasa is the author of Brave: Courageously Live Your Truth (Rockpool Publishing, $29.99).

OUR RESIDENT ASTROLOGER PREDICTS YOUR WEEK FROM MAY 31 TO JUNE 6

WITH JENNY BLUME TAURUS

APR 21 – MAY 21

Slow down, Taurus! Money-related matters might require a rethink over the next few weeks. As new info comes to light, your feelings and strategies will almost certainly change. In the meantime, your busy social life should keep you occupied: brunches, dinners, drinks ... what a whirl, and what a lovely antidote for all the stress that’s around. Enjoy some downtime. LUCKY CRYSTAL: GOLDEN CITRINE

LEO

JUL 24 – AUG 23

‘A change is as good as a holiday’ might suit nicely as your motto. With two eclipses in the wings, it’s time to tackle a few bad habits or alter your routines – you’ll not only feel fitter, but happier, too (investing in group sessions might be your best move yet). Look out for familiar faces who will pop up in the oddest places – an old lover may even make an appearance.

GEMINI

MAY 22 – JUN 21

Everyone will have an opinion this week, making decisions harder than ever. If obstacles are popping up, don’t push: a situation may require more thought and research. As luck would have it, this weekend’s extroverted stars should shake off a few worries. Lovebirds might bust through an important barrier, while couples might feel the flame flickering back to life. LUCKY COLOURS: ORANGE AND GOLD

VIRGO

AUG 24 – SEP 23

As Mercury shifts into reverse, you’ll be bubbling over with inventive ideas. Creative types could find themselves swept up in a flurry of activity, while at work, a left-field suggestion might hit the mark. Party plans could be on the agenda, along with a stream of meetings. Some flattering new evening wear might come in handy!

LUCKY DAYS: TUESDAY AND SATURDAY

LUCKY DAYS: WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY

SCORPIO

SAGITTARIUS NOV 23 – DEC 21

OCT 24 – NOV 22

Pressure may be mounting, but don’t rush into big decisions. Over the next few weeks, better options could materialise, but for now, weigh up options and do a little soul-searching. Bounce your thoughts off some friends if you can, and as moneymanager Mercury shifts into reverse (until June 22), remind yourself that the best things in life are free. LUCKY COLOURS: RED AND ORANGE

AQUARIUS

JAN 21 – FEB 19

Remember, the grass is not always greener. The change and excitement you’re seeking might not be all it’s cracked up to be. Instead, try injecting new life into existing relationships – with Venus adding a spicy note, a little effort should go a long way. On the singles scene, take off those blinkers: someone you currently view as a friend might soon become more. LUCKY GEMSTONE: NATURAL PEARLS

Ready to spice things up? As your love sphere receives a cosmic blast, not only will you rediscover romance, but your libido, too. Couples may find deeper topics being discussed, but if stress has been mounting, it’s just what you need. Talk of relocating might hit the agenda, while for singles, a change of scenery might expand your options. It’s time to look further afield! LUCKY SIGNS: GEMINI AND LEO

CANCER

JUN 22 – JUL 23

As they say, it doesn’t rain, but it pours. For parents, kids’ activities might hit fever pitch, while at work, new staff or methods could keep you on your toes. You might even get caught in a power play, but with Mercury obscuring facts, don’t be drawn into taking sides. Luckily, these stressful stars won’t last long, and by Friday, the vibe should improve.

Live a little! New experiences are just what the doctor ordered, so get creative. It could be an excursion with the kids, an adventurous weekend away or a night out with friends. Things are heating up on the work front too, so if you’ve been feeling restless, send out your résumé or chat with the boss. Alternatively, look into training options and update your skills. LUCKY NUMBERS: 3, 7, 12, 21, 28, 38

CAPRICORN DEC 22 – JAN 20 As the weather cools, the cosmos might prompt a reassessment of your priorities. A person or pastime may have reached their use-by date, while on the health front, a few lifestyle or dietary changes could beckon. At work, why not ask for more flexible hours or use your lunchtimes to get fit? More trips away could also help – and satisfy that travel bug.

LUCKY FLOWERS: AUSTRALIAN NATIVES

READER Q&A

Q

Can you see a new dog coming into my life? I’m not sure if it’s the right timing, as I may be moving into a retirement villa in the next few years. MARY, TOOWOOMBA, QLD. Dogs are the best, aren’t they! Have you considered adopting an older dog? I can see a burst of love in your chart in late July (Venus and Jupiter form a beautiful link), so that could signal the arrival of a furry friend. Don’t let age put you off – you’ve got so much love to give.

Q

I long for a child to share with my partner. We have bought a house and this is the next step for us. Do you see it happening with my stars? KRYSTAL, PERTH, WA. With your passionate Scorpio moon, I can see your desire for children. Your chances of having a family look good, but first, a health or work-related matter might require extra attention. Neptune is currently transiting your sun, which can feel confusing and destabilising, but luckily, this should clear in the next few months. Try to be patient. Things should fall into place through mid 2022.

CLEAR THE CLUTTER Change is in the air (we’re midway between two power-packed eclipses!) so why not go with the flow and clear some clutter, both at home and at work? Not only will you improve your feng shui, but physical activity should work off some excess energy – and there’s plenty of that flying around this week!

Hanging onto clutter can trap you in the past and impede progress, so if you are feeling frustrated or blocked, put those sentimental feelings aside and let it go. With a new moon eclipse on the horizon (on Thursday next week), right now is the perfect time to make space for the new.

The mirror you mention is called a bagua mirror, and ironically, facing it towards your neighbour could be making things worse! They can reflect

the negative energy back, doubling the intensity, so I would take it down. Your chart shows potential power struggles until August, so unless you’re up for a stoush I would lie low until then. Tensions should ease after that, so hang in there. If you’re lucky, the neighbour might even move!

Immediately, the monotonous and mundane job of cleaning, brought joy into the house. “So now when my husband James and myself are cleaning the house, we always have music on.” One song that Miranda, 33, and James love to sing together is ‘Islands in the Stream’ by Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers. “It’s super dorky,” she laughs. “But we often do a lot of long driving and it’s the song that gets us through it.”

Given her intense passion for music, accepting the offer to host Australia’s Biggest Singalong, was a no-brainer for the former Love Child star. The two-hour live musical event sees Miranda team up with Julia Zemiro to bring the nation together to sing along with the Pub Choir from the comfort of their couch. “I hope to bring the joy that I feel when I sing, to the homes of people watching and participating in this show,” says Miranda. And music certainly brought Miranda joy during the pandemic lockdowns. “For me personally, music is what got me through 2020,”

Miranda and her husband James tied the knot in Sydney in 2018.

Music spreads joy and is the quickest pick-me-up.”

x-journalist and first-time author, Casey Beros claims “life is too short to walk around feeling crappy about yourself”. That’s why she penned self-help book The ‘Bad’ Girl’s Guide to Better. Here she chats to New Idea about everything writing…

of cafes, the people watching inspires me, and the endless cups of coffee, tea and snacks don’t hurt either! That said, I’ve written everywhere you can think of – in the car, on planes, in hospitals – you name it. I watch, read or listen to something inspiring.

Inspiration for my book came from… When I was younger, I felt like the people I looked up to weren’t really transparent with their mistakes, which is a shame because there is such camaraderie in brutal honesty. Life is beautiful and incredible, but it can also be tough and lonely and kind of relentless – and we could all do with someone to hold our hand through it, so I made a bestie in a book.

My favourite spot to read is… Give me some sunshine, a deckchair, a good book and a margarita and I’m pretty much the happiest girl alive. It doesn’t happen often, but every time it does, I promise myself to do it more.

When I have writer’s block I… Procrastinate, write my shopping list, fold the laundry … and then force myself to write ANYTHING! The best place to write is… I love the hustle and bustle

The one piece of advice I’d give my teenage self is… No-one knows what they’re doing – just enjoy the ride and let your life unfold as it’s supposed to! The ‘Bad’ Girl’s Guide to Better is out Tue. 81

But SJ doesn’t think of age as an obstacle in the game. In fact, the jewellery dealer says it’s quite the opposite. “My age is far from a hindrance – it is my superpower,” she says. “My focus is using this awareness to strategise how to get further in this game. I am completely aware that I can only truly put trust in myself.” However, last week the mum-of-two had her fellow contestants concerned after she had t be lifted down from the rope challenge by a safety officer to avoid hurtin herself when she fell. “My body was so tightly locked into a

Once she was pulled down, SJ was given the all clear, and reveals it definitely taught her an important lesson. “The experience confirmed to me that we have been gifted this body, and we must be responsible for looking after it as best as we can,” she adds. And in order to look after her body, SJ says that she tries to live a “simple life”, practising yoga daily, eating a plant-based diet and keeping alcohol consumption to a minimum. While it’s easy to forget SJ’s age given her zest for life, she doesn’t have any desire to be labelled as “youthful”. “I would not wish to be any younger today or

tomorrow, than I am at the present moment,” she adds. “For me, living a full and good life implies ageing, rather than being stuck in any ‘prime time’. Today is our prime time, I try to live life fully, today.” SJ has also made a name for herself in the house due to her quirky sense of style, but she is adamant that she is not interested in fashion. “The housemates certainly seem to enjoy wearing my clothes, but it’s all about style not fashion,” she says. “I am not the slightest bit interested in fashion.”

During last week’s rope challenge, SJ had to be helped down by a safety officer after becoming stuck and nearly fainting.

her is planning to turn back time on her amazing life and career in a new biopic for Universal Pictures. On the eve of her 75th birthday earlier this month, the iconic singer confirmed the news on Twitter, writing: “OK, Universal is doing a biopic.” Cher revealed that her “dear, dear friend” Eric Roth, who is known for Forrest Gump, will pen the film. She will serve as a producer alongside Mamma Mia!’s Judy Craymer and Gary Goetzman. “[Cher’s] unparalleled success in music, film and TV has inspired generations. We could not be happier to tell her

story to cinema audiences,” Judy said in a statement. During her six-decadelong career, Cher has dominated the industry, having sold more than 100 million records as well as winning an Oscar for her role in the film Moonstruck. But it’s her compelling personal life that will no doubt have fans tuning in. At 16 years of age, Cher dropped out of school and moved to LA where she met her first husband, Sonny Bono. The two went on to become one of the most famous duos of all time and welcomed a child Chaz (born Chastity) together. Following their divorce, Cher began a tumultuous relationship with musician Gregg Allman, with whom she shares a second child, Elijah. The star has also been linked to celebrities such as Gene Simmons, Richie Sambora and Tom Cruise over the years. Naturally, fans are already speculating who will play Cher in the film, and there is no doubt a long list of Hollywood celebrities putting their hands up for the role. Dakota Johnson, Anne Hathaway, Dua Lipa and Lady Gaga are just a few of the names being tossed around at the moment.

The reclusive pop culture icon, who turned 80 on May 24, was recently spotted running errands around Santa Monica in his typically low-key fashion. According to onlookers, Bob, who drove a modest Toyota ute, kept a low profile in a navy short-sleeve shirt, combat-style boots and dark aviator sunglasses. Despite being considered one of the greatest songwriters of all time,

While little is known about the elusive singer’s life, in 2014, reports claimed that the father of six had split with his third wife, Darlene Springs, after a brief marriage that the singer never acknowledged or publicly confirmed. Prior to his outing earlier this month, Bob had not been snapped out in LA since March 2011 – when he was seen visiting a local synagogue.

getting a little out of hand and it’s a full-time job looking after them,” a close pal tells New Idea. “They’re great dogs, but they bark a hell of a lot and are hard to house-train one at a time, let alone with this many.” The actress took to social media recently to unveil her troop of pooches, and insiders insist the pack are keeping the actress’ hands seriously tied. “She makes jokes about picking up dog poop all day long, but that’s just the start of it,” says the source, adding, “While she’s happy to be helping them, the work it takes to look after them all is beginning to take its toll on her.”
