Strategy for Success at a JOB FAIR
By: Teri Bisceglia, GCDF, CPRW Frederick County Workforce Services
So, you’ve been looking for a new position and thought you might try attending a job fair. Great idea! All those employers in one spot! I can finally talk to a person! Having a strategic plan will help you navigate a job fair with ease and success:
PREP
• Get list of participating employers from event sponsors/venue
• Identify and do some research on employers you’re interested in: find out what they do; their current openings; interesting fact(s) to develop question(s) to ask
• Prioritize employers; create list of ideal companies first (ones to definitely talk to) followed by practical choices, and so on
• Prepare 30-second commercial, “Tell me about yourself and the work you’re interested in doing”
• Create targeted resumés if possible, and be sure to bring enough resumés for all identified employers
• Bring pen and notepad and, if possible, your business cards
• Remember you can never go wrong with clean, neat and odor-free; less is more for accessories including cologne and perfume. Dress for the job you want. And, SMILE!
FA R
ONSITE
• When you arrive, take few minutes to review layout map, marking where employers are located
• Give yourself enough time to visit each identified employer
• Visit companies based upon your prioritized list
• Give your resumé to as many employers as you can
AFTER
• Follow up with all employers you connected with
• Apply for available openings
Stop by Frederick County Workforce Services before and after a job fair to get more information on resumés, 30-second commercials, interviewing, and job search strategies; or check us out at www.FrederickWorks.com.

4 BOOMING CAREER SECTORS
VISION CARE
An aging population has increased the demand for eyecare specialists. Ophthalmologists are medical doctors specializing in eye care and surgery. Optometrists have a doctorate in optometry, and they can examine eyes, prescribe medications and dispense corrective lenses. An optician is a technician who designs and fits glasses and contact lenses according to a prescription.
HUMAN RESOURCES AND RECRUITMENT
As a result of the Great Resignation, businesses in almost every sector are scrambling to fill vacant positions. A human resource professional will seek ways to meet employee needs while achieving business goals and potentially advocating for beneficial workplace changes.
HEALTH CARE
Current health-care workers are retiring in great numbers. If you have a compassionate nature and want to help people, there are plenty of positions available in this sector. Home care workers, registered nurses and paramedics are all in demand.
SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT & ENGINEERING
There’s a growing need for specialized workers in the field of information technology. Software developers write code from scratch to build programs for computers, tablets and phones. Since they usually create entire programs from start to finish, this is typically a job that involves independent work. Software engineers, however, create the tools to develop software, often working on teams to solve large-scale issues.

Are you considering a career change? If you want to switch things up this year, but don’t know what direction to take, here are some employment sectors that are currently experiencing an upswing.
PLUMBING: HIGH EARNING POTENTIAL
Becoming a plumber may be an interesting career option if you can’t see yourself working in an office. Plumbers create and build with their hands and are constantly on the move. They get to meet people from all walks of life and build lasting relationships. Every day is different, and you won’t feel isolated or lonely while on the job.
Plumbers earn a comfortable living. In fact, plumbing is among the most highly paid trades. Therefore, you can easily support yourself and your family. Most importantly, plumbers help make a difference in people’s lives and safeguard their health by keeping water and sewer pipes well maintained. The gratification of helping people is hard to beat. Moreover, plumbing is a physically demanding career that will keep you active all day. Most jobs require you to sit at a desk, so you have to exercise on your own time. However, with plumbing, you’ll keep fit on the job.
Finally, plumbers have unmatched job security. They don’t have to worry about their job being outsourced or eliminated. As long as there are leaky pipes, drains and toilets, plumbers will be needed to fix them.
Get in touch with a career counsellor to find out how you can kick off a career in the plumbing industry.
Spark your creativity with a career in welding
Welders use their skills to create magnificent, breathtaking structures every day. Welding is a growing career field that offers many opportunities for those interested in learning technical skills, exploring their creative tendencies and working hard.
Welders also have the opportunity to travel for their work, as welding is needed all over the world in several fields, including the pipeline, military and shipbuilding industries. There isn’t a standard educational path toward becoming a welder. For example, many individuals choose to attend a vocational school, while others apply for apprenticeships or welding training programs. A huge benefit of joining this industry is that you can start from the bottom and
gain skills and experience through specialized, on-the-job training.
As a welder, the satisfaction of working with your hands and the pride of helping a project evolve from start to finish is hard to beat.
If welding seems like the right career path for you, find a training centre and start earning the competencies you need to be a skilled professional today.
CARPENTRY: A SKILLED CRAFT
If you love working with your hands, are creative, detail-oriented and looking for exciting opportunities, a career as a carpenter may be an ideal path for you. Here are three good reasons to become a carpenter.
1. You can make an impact. A career in carpentry offers you a chance to make a difference in the lives of the people in your community. For example, families will grow into the homes you build, and students will learn in the schools you construct.
2. You don’t have to pay for an expensive education. Carpentry focuses more on skill than education.
HORTICULTURE: A GREEN CAREER
If you’d rather spend your days surrounded by greenery than working at a desk, the field of horticulture may be perfect for you. Here’s a look at the important work of horticulturists.
WHAT’S A HORTICULTURIST?
Horticulturists are agricultural scientists that focus on finding better ways to develop, grow, harvest, store, process and ship fruits, vegetables and decorative plants. They use their expertise to develop new plant varieties that can better resist insects or disease or are better adapted to growing in a range of climates and soils. This has far-reaching benefits and greatly impacts the lives of many people.
WHERE DO THEY WORK?
The career of a horticulturist can be exciting because there are many different types of jobs to choose from. For example, horticulturists can find employment in:
• Nurseries and greenhouses
• Government departments
• Universities and colleges
• Horticulture, floriculture and agriculture research companies
• Fruit and vegetable farming operations
• Garden centres and plant retailers
• Zoos and botanical gardens
Therefore, you don’t have to spend a fortune in academia. Many individuals enrol in carpentry courses at vocational schools and colleges. It’s also possible to opt for practical hands-on training as a labourer or carpentry assistant so you can earn while you learn.
3. You have job security. There is and will always be a need for construction and skilled tradespeople. In fact, carpentry is among Canada’s top five most in-demand trades. Homes, offices, hospitals, schools, factories, roads and other vital structures constantly need to be built, renovated or replaced.

INEXCUSABLE RESUMÉ MISTAKES
career
1 It’s not up to date. If you haven’t updated your CV in a while, make sure it isn’t missing relevant employment information. Think about the position you’re applying for and trim any extraneous details that could take away from your skills.
It mentions incomplete knowledge. Don’t exaggerate your skills by saying you gained experience working with specific technologies in your studies or a previous job if you didn’t.
It lacks precision. Does your CV say you worked for a company from 2021 to 2022? This is ambiguous and could mean the job lasted two years or two months. Therefore, include the months for each job you list to avoid misunderstandings.
It misrepresents your abilities. Don’t try to make yourself look better by including false information in your CV. If the manager finds out you lied, this could potentially harm your reputation.
It doesn’t include contact information. In addition to your email address, your CV must include your mailing address and telephone number. This makes it easier for recruiters to contact you. It also gives them an idea of the distance between your home and the office.

Tips for overcoming shyness before a job interview
Job interviews can be stressful for most people. However, if you’re uncomfortable around others, the mere thought of sitting in front of a recruiter can feel positively overwhelming. If you don’t want your shyness to hold you back from getting the job of your dreams, the key is to be well-prepared.
The more prepared you are, the less stressed you’re likely to be. Indeed, you’re almost guaranteed to feel confident and at ease during the interview if you take the time to get ready for it. To take control of the situation and avoid being caught off guard, you should:
• Ask questions about the interview process
• Research the company beforehand
• Prepare answers to commonly asked interview questions
DID YOU KNOW?
• Rehearse your answers with someone who can give you feedback
Lastly, on the day of the interview, make sure your shyness doesn’t come across in your body language. In other words, remember to smile, stand and sit up straight, uncross your arms and maintain eye contact with the interviewer. Doing so will help you
How to land your FIRST JOB as a recent graduate
Are you looking for your first real job? Although you may come across jobs that require several years of experience, don’t be discouraged. Here are a few tips to help you get your application noticed.
INFORM YOUR CONTACTS
Tell your parents, friends and former classmates about your job search. Try to name specific companies that interest you. Someone you know may have a close connection that can help you adjust your application and increase your chances of being selected. It’s a good idea to participate in networking activities and publicize your job search on social media.
BE HUMBLE
Be realistic. Don’t apply for high-level jobs with six-figure salaries. This will only leave you disappointed. As a new graduate, think of your first job as an opportunity to gain experience and prove yourself. If you work hard, you’ll eventually climb up the corporate ladder.
TAKE CARE OF YOUR PAPERWORK
Bob knows best! Check out the ‘Best Companies to Work For’, voted the Top 3 in the 2022 Best of the Best readers’ choice awards contest:
• Precision Utility Construction Inc.
• Renovations by Ed
• Woodsboro Bank
You’ll probably be up against several other candidates, therefore, make your resume and cover letter stand out by incorporating relevant keywords and action verbs to capture the recruiter’s attention. You may want to hire a resume-writing specialist to help you launch your career.

COLLEGE MAJORS
THAT CAN LEAD TO HIGHER EARNINGS
Choosing a college major is an important decision that many students delay making until their sophomore or even junior years. Only after taking a few courses and uncovering one’s interests do some college students figure out what they want to do with their lives.
Each student is different, and while some may pursue a degree based on a particular passion, others may choose majors that can lead to high-paying jobs. While men often lean toward majors like engineering and computer science that have traditionally been linked to high earnings, women have historically gravitated to lowerpaying specialties like education and social sciences. But in recent years a shift has occurred, and more women have begun to choose majors associated with higher post-graduate salaries.
Reports from the career guidance site Glassdoor identified several majors where female college graduates can earn as much or more. Female students unsure of which major they want to pursue can take career assessments to help narrow down their options. Working with mentors or engaging in internships also can present a first-hand idea of high-paying career paths.
