By ADRIANA MORGA and CORA LEWIS The Associated Press
Here are five key things to think about if you’re looking for a job (or wondering whether you should):
“With inflation, employees that are otherwise happy at work are forced to look for another job. It’s a retention problem,” he said.
5 THINGS to consider when looking for a new job 21
“You might have an employee who loves their workplace, but they’ll say, ‘I have to go across the street for the job that will pay me 20% more.’”
While not all employers can afford to offer cost-of-living wage increases, some are increasingly open to providing other benefits, such as more remote work options, subsidized child care, or coverage of commuting expenses, according to Johnny C. Taylor Jr., chief executive officer of the Society for Human Resource Management.
THE CURRENT JOB MARKET
How much you’ll be paid is key, and how you look at your income depends in part on your industry.
For Justin Taylor, a restaurant worker based in Minneapolis, it isn’t only a question of how much he can make per hour, but also how much he can get in tips. Taylor increased his salary from $15 per hour to approximately $20 per hour when he changed jobs from Chipotle to a local Conversationsrestaurant.around pay are rarely transparent. If you’re not sure what the average salary in your industry might be, the the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics provides a list of average wages and salaries in most sectors.

New York (AP) — The U.S. economy added 528,000 jobs in July, meaning workers who want a new job can probably find one. When looking for a new role, experts advise you think about several factors. These include the state of the job market, salary and benefits, the commute, and the overall work environment. While not all employers can afford to offer cost-of-living wage increases, some are increasingly open to providing other benefits, such as more remote work options, subsidized child care, or coverage of commuting expenses.
SALARY
As of July, there were 1.7 jobs for every unemployed person, meaning employers are competing for workers in many industries.
Looking for a new job is a balancing act: Some people change roles for a shorter commute or better salary, others want health insurance or flexible schedules, and still others are looking to work in a new or different Compensation, industry.job location and work environment are among the most important factors you should consider when looking for a new role, according to Jill Gonzalez, a financial analyst from WalletHub.
If you find a job that pays more per hour but requires a longer com mute, it might not work out to be much of a pay raise, after factoring in gas or the cost of public transit. Before his new job, Taylor used to commute 30 minutes each way on public transport; he now travels on his electric scooter for less than 10 Withminutes.gasprices higher than a year ago, Taylor also decided to sell his truck and start using more affordable alternatives. Survey data shows that 64 percent of U.S. adults have changed their driving habits or lifestyle since March of this year, according to the Ameri can Automobile Association. If you can take public transportation to your job or you pay for parking, check with your potential new employer about whether the company offers pre-tax benefits.

For some, good benefits might include health insurance or retire ment contributions. For others, working from home a few days a week or having on-the-job training are great bonuses. “The work-life balance is equally important. (Workers) should in quire about vacation and sick day policies, as well as work-fromhome flexibility,” Gonzalez said. That was the case for Taylor, who approached his job search with the goal of having more flexibility. “I’m a person, I have a life outside of work and wanted to have more control. That was really important, too. So I went in letting them know ‘Hey, I will need this day off,’” said Taylor, who is also a member of Restaurant Opportunities Cen ters United, a non-profit organization that advocates for workers’ Autorights.mechanics, for example, should take every on-the-job train ing and get every certification offered, he said, to make themselves more valuable to their workplace and more attractive to potential employers if they should need to change jobs.
WORK ENVIRONMENT Blair Heitmann, a career expert for hiring platform LinkedIn, en courages job seekers to think about company culture when looking to change roles. Reaching out to current and former employees, researching press and social media and even reading earnings reports are some of her Websitesrecommendations.suchasIndeed and Glassdoor have user-generated re views of workplaces and some offer pay ranges for certain compa Thisnies.research can also help give you insight into what makes a busi ness run, which can give you a leg up in an interview, she said.
BENEFITS
“If a work environment doesn’t have good management or doesn’t find that time to appreciate the individual for what they do, a lot of people can tend to feel down about themselves,” she said.

Stephanie Stathas, a licensed therapist with Thriveworks, which provides in-person and online therapy, says that identifying healthy workplaces can help reduce job stress.

“I missed the sense of belonging and social identity I get from working in the office,” Serras told us. She is careful to set boundaries with her work life, preferring to detach completely at the end of the day by doing yoga, going for a run, or spending time with loved ones.
IT’S TIME TO ASK: MORE PEOPLE PREFER TO REMOTELY AN OFFICE?
CATCHING UP WITH THE LABOR MARKET
“Being a solopreneur always means a lot of work,” says Hoffman, “however, I don’t struggle to enjoy life.”
Today she lives out her days in Thailand. She scuba-dives in the morning before checking her work emails. For her, remote work offers flexibility, travel, and adventure.
Justin McDevitt undefined
The data may show an increased preference for remote work, but there is no denying that some professionals would much rather be in an office. Having more options about the way that we work could allow for more success across all industries.
WORK
All participants will receive a complimentary copy of “The Entrepre neurial Leap: Do You Have What It Takes to Become an Entrepreneur?” by Gino Wickman, the best-selling author of “Traction.” Packed with real-life stories and practical advice, the book has been described as a simple how-to manual to help you start a better start-up.
WHAT HAVEREMOTEDOWORKERSTOSAY?
Wealth of Geeks spoke with Kimberly Back, the Senior Job Data Content Producer for Virtual Vocations, to unpack some of the findings in the report. For example, 45% of workers want a four-day work week, while 20% say their top concern is limited access to remote work.
“We switched to remote work because of the lockdowns, and we’ve been dying to return to the office ever since,” says Ian Kelly, the CEO of NuLeaf Naturals. For business leaders like Kelly, remote work just didn’t work for him. “Lea ving the office left a hole in my work life, and it’s been difficult to fill it,” Kelly ex plained. Luckily, he’s back in the office and loving it. Since returning to work, Kelly has observed some changes in office life.
The pandemic irrevocably changed how we look at the world around us. As millions of Americans lost their jobs, traditional employment evolved into remote and hybrid models.
Sascha Hoffman is a lifestyle marketing consultant and blog ger. Her work has brought her to Silicon Valley, the U.K., and Germany. In March 2020, she was working in San Fran sisco with plans to move to New York. The pandemic changed all of that. Hoffman decided to quit her job and carve out a career as a digital marketing freelancer.
HighRock is the entrepreneur in residence at the Center for Business and Entrepreneurial Studies at HCC’s CBES building in Hagerstown.
At the same time, mil lions of Americans are quitting their jobs in favor of freelance and remote work. The tra ditional work model as we know it could be gone forever.
With all the data suggesting a push to fully remote work, we wanted to investigate if there were people who yearned to return to an office and the traditional work model.
Although Leanna Serras could work effectively from home, she longed for the days when she could return to the office. So the Chief Customer Office of Fragrance X was excited to learn she was returning to in-person work.
SURVEYING THE JOB MARKET
“We’re excited to partner with HCC and help aspiring entrepreneurs,” says Daughtridge. “In this first book series over three sessions, we’ll take a deep dive into what it takes to become an entrepreneur and more.”
A new survey polled potential employees’ preferences for the ideal work model. 62% of workers preferred a job that would allow them to work remotely 100% of the time without having to leave home for work, according to a survey conducted by Virtual Vocations.
A recent U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics report shows job openings have decreased to 10.7 million, down 6.6% percent. While that might sound like good news, many major companies are announcing layoffs. Peloton has let go of 4,150 people this year. Spotify plans to lay off 10% of its workforce. Even Tesla is not immune. Elon Musk ‘s com pany laid off 229 employees in June.
DISCUSSION: The Entrepreneurial LEAP will be led by Rich Daughtridge, founder and CEO of Warehouse Cinemas and HighRock.
Over two years into the pandemic, we can start to analyze the results of this shift. While some changed careers, left major cities, and navigated a new normal, others learned how to work their long-term jobs remotely. As a result, freelance and remote work thrived, creating new possibilities for a healthier work/life balance.

Hiring locally ensures your staff have a deep understanding of the local market, making it easier to bring in new business. In addition, a local hire will likely be more invested in helping your company succeed since it benefits their community.
2. YOU’LL GROW THE COMPANY
12 | FALL CAREER FAIR – SEPTEMBER 14, 2022 | SPECIAL ADVERTISING SUPPLEMENT OF THE FREDERICK NEWS-POST
Technology makes it possible for companies to hire employees from all over the world. Though many businesses are looking overseas to expand their workforce, others are going in the opposite direction and focusing their efforts on investing in local talent. Here are three good reasons to hire locally.
As the saying goes: “if you love your job, you’ll never work a day in your life.” If you’re looking for your dream job, here are some tips for setting you in the right direction. Identify your passions. Discover your interests by asking yourself the right ques tions. What websites do you visit when you want to relax? What types of movies or books do you enjoy? When was the last time you put extra effort into something, personally or professionally? Your answers may pro vide insight into what you love. Seek advice. Your friends and family know you best. Therefore, ask them for their opinions on your perfect job. They may see qualities in you that you’ve downplayed, like public speaking or cooking. Moreover, meeting with a career counsellor can help you identify industries or roles you may have overlooked. Set salary and money aside. If you concentrate too much on salary expecta tions, you may be missing out on jobs you’d love. Pretend you don’t have any financial commitments. What would you do? You may find you’d be willing to work longer hours at reduced pay if you’re in an environment that motivates and engages you. Know your values. If you love being outside in nature, you may not find an office job fulfilling. On the other hand, if you value having free evenings and weekends, then a Monday-to-Friday job may suit your lifestyle best.
1. YOU’LL BOOST THE LOCAL ECONOMY
One of the biggest advantages of hiring locally is that it creates jobs and provides training opportu nities that wouldn’t otherwise be available. This helps keep money in your community and streng then the local economy.
How to find a job you’ll love
ofBENEFITShiringlocally
3. YOU’LL SIMPLIFY THE HIRING PROCESS
If you hire locally, there’s a good chance you already know someone who either fits the bill or knows the right candidate. This streamlines the hiring process and ensures you get the right people for the job. Overall, hiring homegrown talent is good for business and your community too.
Once you’ve identified your preferences, find ways to put them to work. Volunteer, take classes or earn certifications in those areas. Do some research into companies and job opportunities in your fields of interest.

HOW VOLUNTEERING CAN LAND YOU A JOB FAST FACT STUDIES SHOW THAT VOLUNTEERPUTTINGWORKONYOURRESUMEINCREASESYOURCHANCESOFBEINGHIREDBYABOUT 27%! Although education and work experience are essential for landing your first job, volunteer ing can also give you an advantage over other applicants. Here’s how.
It gives you new skills and experience. When you volunteer, you may have to deal directly with clients, suppliers and board members. You may also have to learn new computer programs or give presentations. You can learn both hard and soft skills while volunteering, which you can bring to the table when you apply for a paid job. It prepares you for the applica tion process. Most organizations require potential volunteers to fill out an application and parti cipate in an interview. Many will also demand a driver’s licence and criminal record check. Going through this process will ensure you know what to expect when applying for a paid gig. It expands your network. When you volunteer, you meet new people and broaden your net-work of friends and asso ciates. It’s good to save contact information from colleagues, board members, clients and suppliers. You never know who may be able to help you find a dream job. It can give you references. It’s tough to get references without work experience. However, a nonprofit organization or charity reference is just as valid as one from an employer. Telecommuting has become increasingly popular in recent years. It allows companies to recruit qualified talent across the globe. If your company is about to welcome a new telecommut ing employee, here’s how to do it.
• Talk about the company. Describe the company’s mission, values and other information to help the employee develop a sense of belonging.
• Offer mentoring. Ensure the new employee knows they have someone they can lean on and contact if they need help. This will help them feel at ease.
ENTRY-LEVEL POSITION: Take it or leave it?
It’s rare to get your dream job on the first try. Therefore, if you’re offered an entry-level position, it’s necessary to ask yourself if it’s a good idea to accept it. Here are some tips to help you decide.
WHEN TO ACCEPT
• Present your tools. Familiarize the employee with the tools, software and online platforms the company uses daily.
Bob and Freddie know best! Check out the ‘Best Community-Oriented Companies’, voted the Top 3 in the 2021 Best of contest
WHEN TO REFUSE If you sincerely doubt that you’ll enjoy your everyday tasks, the job probably isn’t for you. The same applies if most of your skills and educational achievements don’t apply to the job and won’t contribute to your professional development. Finally, it may be best to refuse the position if the salary is significantly lower than your expectations or if the company has a high turnover rate.
If the job is related to your area of expertise and allows you to use and develop your skills, it may be worthwhile. The job may let you explore a field you’re interested in and help you obtain a better position in the future. The offer may also be attractive if there is room for career development within the company.

Stephenson represents a generation entering the labor market at a time when businesses and employees are redefining work and the workplace after the pandemic hit. Unlike the generations that came before, one of the biggest struggles for the new crop of professionals is interpersonal connections and relationships in the workplace, after the pandemic left them isolated during some pivotal years of development.
TOWEREKNOWDON’TIFWECUTOUTWORKINA
PRECOVID WORLD – G insey Stephenson
• Flexibility is key. Gen Z either wants hybrid or remote options, so companies may want to consider offering flexible options that allow workers to choose what makes sense for them.
TIPS FOR LURING GEN Z HIRES
To Generation Z – those born between 1997 and 2012 – money may not always be the top job priority. Instead, their list includes flexibility to work from the office and remotely, wellness and mental health initiatives as well as meaningful work and culture. And many are willing to job hop to find the best fit. For employers, accommodating these prefe rences may become increasingly important.
• Review the wording of the job listing. Ensure that entry-level jobs don’t require years of experience, as you may be missing out on an entire crop of young talent.
• Ethical leadership is a must. Gen Z wants to know their leaders are ethical, expect action to address moral blind spots and want to know their work has a positive impact on the world.
Gen Z workers are expected to more than triple to 87 million people by 2030 in Australia, France, Germany, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and the United States, according to a study by Oxford Economics. “We’re seeing this young cohort of workers de mand that employers care about them as whole people,” said Linda Jingfang Cai, vice president of ta lent development at LinkedIn. “And the ability to understand their career path is worth more than a paycheck.” Gen Z can be an enigma to some of their older counterparts. They are often labeled as “lazy” or “entitled.” But Allison Williams, a 2022 Pepperdine University gra duate, said people need to remember that the coronavirus pandemic hit right in the middle of some of the most influential years for Gen Z –when they were forming who they are and what they value as adults. The pandemic changed the way they formed friendships, received their education and got their first internships and jobs. It had a big impact on the way they view work and how it can and should be done, she said.

When Ginsey Stephenson moved to San Francisco for work in February, she finally met and mixed with her colleagues for the first time. It was something the 23-year-old had longed for since entering the professional world out of college seven months prior.
Tips on hiring and working with demographicthe WHAT DOES GEN Z WANT?
The boutique public relations firm she works for follows a hybrid schedule of three days in the office per week, meaning she no longer has to nervously message people on Slack she had never met in person. Most importantly, being in the office has helped her transition from wor king from her parents’ Virginia home – much like she did in school – to life as a working adult. “I actually love going into the office – it feels more organic,” Stephenson said. “But I don’t know how anyone went into the office every day. I don’t know if we were cut out to work in a pre-covid world.”
• Create diverse and inclusive workplaces. Gen Z considers it imperative to work at a job that promotes respect, equity and inclusion.
Employers aiming to hire more young people have a lot to consider. Here are some tips from LinkedIn’s Jingfang Cai and polls of Gen Z conducted by Gallup.
