Located in northeastern Carroll County, the Town of Hampstead is an historic, family-oriented community with friendly neighborhoods and successful small businesses. Hampstead has been growing quickly ever since the first stagecoach business came to town in 1808, changing from a small farming town into one of the fastest growing municipalities in Carroll County, while retaining its small-town charm. In May, the town’s biggest event is Hampstead Day, where all types of vendors line Main Street. MANCHESTER | www.manchestermd.gov The Town of Manchester dates back to the 1760s and is famous for being the base for the Union Sixth Army Corps, which made its march into Gettysburg, PA under General John Sedgwick. During the Civil War, thousands of troops were housed in or around the town. Over the years, Manchester has kept its small-town feel through local organizations and volunteers who operate the Christmas Tree Park and Charlotte’s Quest Nature Center. TANEYTOWN | www.taneytown.org The Tuscarora Indians were the earliest known inhabitants in the Taneytown area, where they hunted deer, otter, wolves and wildcats in the abundant woodlands. Before the arrival of white settlers, however, most Native Americans had already migrated out of the area that was eventually founded as Taneytown in 1754. With a long history of rural settlement, the City of Taneytown and the surrounding area is rich in historic landmarks that continue to enhance and affect the character of the area. A portion of the City is designated as an Historic District with the National Register of Historic Places. Taneytown offers visitors a country landscape, nature parks, and numerous events throughout the year including an annual Toy Show and Auction, Youth Fishing Derby and a Wine/Jazz Festival. The jewel of Taneytown is Antrim 1844 Country House Hotel, acclaimed for its cuisine and luxurious accommodations which attract visitors from all over the country. UNION BRIDGE | www.carr.org/-unionbr The gently rolling terrain of Union Bridge offers outstanding rural scenes at every turn in the road, while its small downtown boasts a proud heritage. The National Park Service has recog-

nized Union Bridge for its wealth of historic buildings. Many of the buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places and you can learn more in the walking tour brochure available at the Carroll County Visitor Center. Plan to visit the Western Maryland Railway Museum and stop for a meal at The Buttersburg Inn. WESTMINSTER | www.westminstermd.gov Westminster celebrated its 250th anniversary in 2014, combining the City’s rich history with today’s outstanding retail and restaurant offerings. Downtown Westminster: We are Here! Designated as a nationally accredited Main Street Program, the Main Street area is filled with great architecture, family-owned restaurants and shops, great entertainment venues, and outstanding service. n its eight store locations across Carroll and Frederick counties, Goodwill Monocacy Valley is more than a place to donate or buy stuff. It’s a place to help people find jobs, a place to help the environment, and a place that helps build communities. “People think about activism and how to get involved,” said GIMV President and CEO Michael Meyer. “What makes us work is the community. Every time you drop off your stuff, you’re helping somebody find an opportunity.” Through classes, training and work experience offered at GIMV’s Employment Resource Centers, local residents develop the marketable skills they need to obtain and maintain meaningful

St. John Catholic school & church

hen St. John Catholic School opened in 1866, classes were held in the church sacristy. Maryland was recovering from the scars of the Civil War and Louis Pasteur had just introduced his technique for making food and drink safe from bacteria. A lot has changed during that time, but one thing has remained constant: “St. John provides a rigorous academic education rooted in our Catholic faith,” said Principal Jo Marie Tolj, who assumed leadership of the school in November. “Our goal is to prepare our students for life in the 21st century while forming disciples of Christ who will be leaders in our church and our community.” Although St. John Catholic School serves students from Pre-K4 through the eighth grade, it retains a small school feeling. “We have a very, very strong community here,” Tolj said. “It is a family atmosphere where everyone knows each other and takes care of each other.” Small class sizes mean teachers and staff can devote attention to each student’s needs, while the school’s commitment to technology ensures students have access to tools that support 21st century learning. “Our students in grades 5 through 8 have a one-to-one iPad ratio, and our primary grade students have iPad carts for shared use,” Tolj said. “In addition, our state-of-theart computer lab features a 3D printer and robotics.”

Tolj said St. John school attracts students from throughout the region, including Carroll, Baltimore and Frederick counties. Many of today’s parents are alumni themselves and appreciate the school’s dedicated staff and fully certified teachers, many of whom have been there for 10 years or longer. Families are also drawn to the school’s suburban campus and offering of extracurricular activities that include running and equestrian clubs. St. John Catholic School is an integral part of the St. John Catholic Church family, said Fr. Mark Bialek, the church’s pastor.

“The school provides an excellent education for our children in faith formation and supports our goal of developing good citizens whose values reflect those of the Gospel.”

Bialek is particularly proud of all of his parishioners’ faithful support of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, which he said regularly collects more than $1,000 in the weekly poor box collection to support emergency food distribution efforts, holiday gift campaigns and emergency utility bill payments. “These are examples of how our parish community supports the greater community of Carroll County and demonstrates the ways in which we try to live the message of Jesus Christ,” Fr. Bialek said.

That is especially important, he said, given that the Church has put an extra emphasis on evangelization, especially to the marginalized members of society. “As a parish, our goal is to be a welcoming community that proclaims the Gospel in new ways,” Fr. Leadership Carroll Program

since its debut in 1990, leadership carroll has been the premier leadership development program in carroll county. over 500 participants have graduated from the program. The program’s purpose is to provide existing and emerging leaders with a combination of leadership training and detailed knowledge of the community, including a description of the problems, opportunities and issues facing our community. The program runs from September thru June and focuses on a different aspect of Carroll County each month.

new member orientation meetings

New members are encouraged to attend a New Member Orientation. The meetings are held the 2nd Thursday of the month from 8:30-9:30 AM at the Chamber office. Call to reserve your seat 410-848-9050. Member’s new hires or anyone interested in learning more about the Chamber before joining are welcome too.
