Professional baseball has returned to the Hub City and has arrived just in time for visitors to enjoy many of our new attractions – and to revisit some old favorites.

Before or after the game, we invite you to explore the Cultural Trail in downtown Hagerstown which features unique and colorful public art. The trail connects our Arts & Entertainment District, home to the newly renovated Maryland Theatre, to our world-class Museum of Fine Arts in City Park.

While you’re in town, be sure to also leave some time to enjoy some of our great places to eat and drink. Sample Bavarian food and drink at Hagerstown’s enduring favorite, Schmankerl Stube, or explore the offerings of exciting new additions such as the Hub City Brewery in the city’s former Market House building and the Baile Cask & Kettle Irish Pub in the renovated Updegraff Building.

When you make plans to return for another ball game, take some time to explore the stunning nature of Washington County. We are home to five national parks, eight state parks, three Scenic Byways and the C&O Canal. Experience Civil War history up close and learn more about the stirring stories that unfolded at Antietam National Battlefield and South Mountain State Battlefield.

There’s more to do in Hagerstown and Washington County than you can take in during just one visit. So come back again and again to see for yourself why Hagerstown and Washington County are the Hub of fun things to do and great memories to make.

Professional baseball returns to Hagerstown this year after a four-year absence, when the Flying Boxcars take the field in a new $82 million stadium that economic development and tourism experts believe will hit a home run with fans, tourists and business investors.

WHy tHe flying Boxcars?

Manufactured at Fairchild Aircraft’s plant in Hagerstown, the C-119 Flying Boxcar took to the air in 1947 and was designed to carry heavy loads of cargo, paratroopers or medical patients. The planes were used heavily during the Korean War and were critical in airlifting bridge sections to U.S. troops trapped by communist forces at the Chosin Reservoir in 1950. The Flying Boxcars will compete in the independent Atlantic League of Professional Baseball.

BaseBall Winds u p for its r eturn to Hagersto W n

With the debut of the Hagerstown Flying Boxcars at the new Meritus Park on May 4, the city is celebrating the next chapter in its rich history with the “boys of summer.”

The old Municipal Stadium opened in 1930 and over the course of its more than 90year history, was home to a number of minor league or semi-professional teams. It all began with the Hagerstown Hubs in 1930. The Hagerstown Suns played there for 19 years before their last season in 2020. In 2021, the stadium hosted its final games when the Hagerstown Braves, a semi-professional team, played their season there.

A number of big leaguers played at Municipal Stadium during its history, either before they were promoted to the majors or as part of post-injury rehab. The future all-stars included Mike Messina, Jim Palmer, Bryce Harper and Stephen Strasburg.

Municipal Stadium was demolished in 2022. Ground broke on the $82 million Meritus Park, located 1.5 miles from the old stadium, shortly thereafter.

mMeritus Park is the new home of the Flying Boxcars (see sidebar to learn more about the team’s name) and has been dubbed “America’s Newest and Most Innovative Ballpark.”

Located at the intersection of West Baltimore Street and Summit Avenue in downtown Hagerstown, the ballpark is a key component of the area’s ongoing revitalization.

“This facility will bring tens of thousands of people downtown and instigate a level of collateral development that is unprecedented,” said Dan Spedden, president of the Hagerstown/Washington County Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Meritus Park offers the kinds of amenities fans have come to expect from modern sports facilities, including a 360° concourse and numerous gathering spaces including a beer garden, a full-service outfield bar, picnic area and pub-style high-top tables in public viewing areas.

But like all modern sports facilities, the park has been intentionally designed to accommodate a number of different uses that will magnify its economic impact in the community beyond games of called balls and strikes.

With dedicated social spaces and a 300-person conference center, the stadium will serve as a 365-dayyear venue that can attract concerts, corporate gatherings and other private events during the off-season. The venue will also be open to private events during the season when the team is traveling.

Fynn McDonald, director of marketing for the Hagerstown Boxcars, said the stadium’s design will make it a popular community destination. “In addition to corporate events, we also want to be able to rent it out for concerts, festivals and to high schools and little leagues,” he said.

On game days, the park has a stated capacity of 4,000, yet only has 3,200 fixed seats so as to accommodate the numerous communal viewing areas. For concerts, however, it can accommodate up to 6,000 by making use of the artificial field space.

When the Flying Boxcars open the season on May 4 for their inaugural homestand, the crowd will be able to soak in all these new experiences, as well as promotional giveaways and end-of-game fireworks.

With its multi-use capabilities and location just blocks from some of Hagerstown’s other major attractions, including Hagerstown City Park, the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts and the newly renovated Maryland Theater, Meritus Park is expected to attract regional tourists – and their wallets –whether they are avid baseball fans or not.

Jill Thompson, director of Community & Economic Development for the city of Hagerstown, said

12 | HAGERSTOWN FLYING BOXCARS

downtown Hagerstown is seeing an infusion of new investments in addition to the new ballpark, including several new restaurants and a $1 million adaptive reuse of the city’s Market House building into a new brewery, distillery and cidery dubbed Hub City Brewery. The building was once owned by the city of Hagerstown and sold to Hub City Brewery’s owner David Blackmon in 2022. Blackmon purchased the building under the city’s Competitive Negotiated Sales (CNS) program, which seeks to return publicly owned properties back to the private sector based on both a competitive negotiated sale price and the investor’s plans for redevelopment of the property.

In addition to new commercial investments in the area, Thompson said downtown Hagerstown is also seeing a resurgence in upper-floor residential projects. This includes a $4.5 million investment in the renovated Updegraff Building, where the upper floors have been converted into 21-market rate apartments.

Since 2020, investment in downtown Hagerstown has topped $190 million. Each new project brings opportunities for new tax revenue, new jobs and new spending. The Flying Boxcars alone expect that their 63 home games will create 100 new jobs in addition to the team’s 15 permanent front office positions.

“I think that our residents as well as downtown businesses and investors are very positive about the amount of growth that is happening simultaneously downtown,” Thompson said. “This is Hagerstown’s moment to shine.”

Indeed, under the bright lights of Meritus Park, Hagerstown will celebrate both the return of professional baseball to the city, but also the hard work and determination of the city’s leaders and residents to fight for the city they are proud to call home.

“We have a local ownership group,” the Flying Boxcars’ McDonald said. “They are backing this because they love baseball, but also because they love the city that they call home. They are Hagerstown natives who want to make a difference in their community.”

“in addition to corporate events, We also Want to Be aBle to rent it out for concerts, festivals and to HigH scHools and little leagues.”

Boxcars tH ro W n o-Hitter in i naugural g ame

The Hagerstown Flying Boxcars opened their season on April 25, facing off against the York Revolution at Wellspan Park in York, Pennsylvania.

Pitcher Parker Markel took the mound, throwing the first ever Boxcars pitch, and headlined what would become a historic night.

The Boxcars took the lead early, after outfielder Magneuris Sierra singled off of the second pitch on the evening. Curtis Terry would bring him home, to begin his monster day. The first baseman notched three runs batted in on the night, with Eury Perez scoring the fourth runner.

Parker Markel went six innings for the Boxcars, registering seven strikeouts, Domingo Jiminez struck out three through two, and Enrique Sanatana secured the combined no-hitter in the ninth, taking down two batters to seal the deal.

It is just the fourth combined no-hitter in Atlantic League history, and the first time any no-hitter has been thrown on an Atlantic League opening day.

Facts are not free.

Anyone can spout off on social media. Anyone can post their personal hot take on the issue of the day, free of facts, free of anything but their own opinion and bias.

Real news is different. Real news comes from experienced journalists who put aside their assumptions and talk to people on all sides of an issue.

Real news is hard. When you work for an organization devoted to real journalism, you are challenged daily by your editors. Hot takes don’t cut it –you have to do the work. That means talking to experts, mastering the issues, confirming every fact.

Real news rocks the boat. Sometimes, people don’t want you looking into what’s going on. They hide information. They clam up, they refuse to release documents. They even sue you. Real news organizations fight back.

Real news is not free. If we are going to work together to move our community forward, we need facts – and we need professional journalists to cover the news. That’s what we do – and we need your support, now more than ever.
