HOW TO CHOOSE THE PERFECT

wedding venue Now that you’re engaged (congratulations!), it’s time to figure out where you want to take the next big step in your relationship. Yup, we’re talking the setting for your “I dos,” and there are more options than you can possibly imagine. From all-in-one venues that take care of everything, including the planning, party decorations, catering, and more to the unconventional locations like your Grandma’s bingo parlor. Almost any spot can become your perfect wedding venue if the powers that be agree and the price is right. So, how do you choose? Frederick FrederickWeddings Weddings2022 2022

Perfect Venue

Consider the season and average temperatures during that time and location. Your venue may have a backup plan for rentals/events if bad weather does arise ● NEARBY ACCOMMODATIONS If you have guests coming in from out of town, it is helpful to have comfortable accommodations of all budgets available. Consider restaurants, safety of the area and proximity to the airport for people flying in. Even though a remote country location may be gorgeous in the pictures, it may present an extra challenge for your loved ones to attend the event. ● Accessibility for guests with special needs – check on the ADA accessibility for entrances, bathrooms, distance of parking to the venue, seating, etc. ● PARKING OPTIONS Depending on the city vs. country location of your venue, take note on where guests can park, how accessible cabs or ride sharing is, paid parking or potential shuttle options. ● BATHROOMS Consider the location and number of bathrooms in comparison to the size of your event. If you are having an outdoor wedding in a nontraditional location and there are no onsite options, the location

{

coordinator may have some creative options so your guests can enjoy their time in a comfortable way. CURFEW AND PRIVACY Depending on the location and venue, there could be strict rules in place about when you will need to turn off music/reduce noise, particularly with outdoor locations. ■ Privacy can vary depending on the venue. If a very private event is your preference, you may want to avoid more public locations or shared spaces where someone can watch from afar or wander into the event. ● DANCE FLOOR Some venues have a space for dancing built in, but some do not. If having a space to dance is a top priority, your venue may have additional options that can be included. ● SET UP AND BREAKDOWN A very important detail is who will be responsible for set up and break down of the event and when this will need to be completed. Some venues have multiple weddings in a day, so they may have stricter rules about the time availability of when you can set up and decorate, then tear down. Asking about the rules of the venue can also help you and your wedding planner develop a realistic timeline for the special day that reduces stress for all parties. ● VIBES AND THEME Your venue plays a huge part in the overall vibes and energy of your special day. It can be helpful to have a general theme in mind as you begin your venue search so you have the foundation or building

INDOOR AND OUTDOOR SPACE Do you want both? If you are planning an outdoor wedding or reception (or both in the same location) – a plan B is always great to have in your back pocket just in case of inclement weather.

blocks to make your wedding exactly the ● aesthetic you want. If you don’t have a strong opinion or you truly have no idea where to start to identify the look and feel of your wedding, Pinterest can be incredibly helpful to figure out what you like and don’t like. Your intuition plays a big role in decision making so go with your gut after your site visit. Does the staff have answers to your questions? Do they seem like they will provide the level of support you are looking for? Are they communicative and responsive to emails and phone calls? Feeling comfortable is very important. ● REVIEWS AND TESTIMONIALS Past guests can have the best insight! Read reviews online for an unbiased feel on what people are saying (the venue’s website will most likely include only the glowing feedback). Third party sites or reviews on social media are a great place to start. If you want a direct testimonial, you may be able to ask the venue for past clients or wedding planners to ask very specific questions.

Frederick Weddings 2022

1

BUDGET

Create an overall budget to work from so you have an idea of what you can spend on venues. Typically couples spend about 30% of their wedding budget on the venue. What is included in the cost – some venues include necessities like tables, chairs, lighting, etc., but some may charge extra for all of these key elements. Ask lots of questions!

2

AVAILABILITY

Do you already have a date in mind, or do you have flexibility? If you have a hard date identified, check with your venue early for the best chance of booking your dream date. Many local venues are booked 12-18 months out, so start looking as soon as possible.

3

13

LOGISTICS

Are you having a big wedding or small wedding? If you have a general idea in mind of how many people will be on the guest list, check on the capacity of the venue to ensure you have enough space for everyone you want to invite. Big venues with a small guest list can feel a bit empty and venues that are at capacity with your guest list number could possibly feel a bit cramped. Think about and ask questions about table arrangement placement, layout and flow of the event for the most comfortable (and sensible) plan. Chances are the venue has an expert with many good suggestions.

With weddings becoming increasingly personalized, things that were once considered traditional "must haves" and "must dos" are sometimes no longer part of a couple's day. It can be overwhelming and confusing to know what etiquette is appropriate and what expectations there will be for guests and wedding vendors. We've taken a few of our most frequently asked questions and done the research for you.

Frederick Weddings 2022

19

FrederickWeddings.com

WE ARE UNSURE IF WE SHOULD DO A “FIRST LOOK” AT OUR WEDDING. WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES? First looks are dependent on the couple and the timeline. If you are planning a more traditional wedding that includes an extended timeline for photographs after the ceremony and if you prefer to save the excitement in seeing one another for the first time when you walk down the aisle, a first look may not be for you. However, if you’re planning a faster paced wedding and would enjoy a private moment together before hitting the ceremony area, a first look may be perfect for you. SARAH BURNS PHOTOGRAPHY

HOW DO WE DECIDE HOW MUCH ALCOHOL WE NEED TO PURCHASE FOR OUR RECEPTION? Non-alcoholic drinks can be easy: one can = one serving. When it comes to beer and wine, a good rule of thumb is one drink per person, per hour. So one hundred guests for a three-hour reception (dinner and dancing) is a combination of three hundred bottles/ cans of beer and glasses of wine. For a standard wine bottle, there are at least four to five servings. Make sure to gauge your crowd, too. What do you think most of-age guests will drink? Will you have a signature drink with liquor? These factors may sway the quantities you purchase. Buy more than you think from a liquor store that accepts returns, but don’t over-serve! SLEEPING BEE DESIGNS

Ask The Experts

HOW LONG SHOULD I GIVE MY GUESTS TO RSVP TO OUR WEDDING?

and for good reason- no one likes to work when they are “hangry.” They will likely eat when you eat, so services will not be interrupted. A good, hot meal will recharge your vendors and get them ready to rock out your reception.

In general, you want to give your guests at least 15 days between when your wedding invitation will arrive to the RSVP deadline. Invitations typically are mailed out 6-8 weeks before the wedding date, farther out if it is a destination wedding. Using pre-stamped enclosure cards or allowing guests to RSVP via email is a way to encourage guests to RSVP in a timely manner. You will likely need your final guest count to your caterer a week before your wedding, so make sure you have the most accurate count no later than 7-10 days prior.

As far as tipping, it is recommended to tip anyone on your wedding day who goes above and beyond for you. It is worth checking your contracts, as some vendors, such as caterers and transportation, may already include gratuity. Your wedding vendors don’t expect a tip, but it is greatly appreciated. While tipping the owners of a company (wedding planner, photographer, etc.) is unnecessary, tipping their helpers is a nice gesture. The same thing goes for the ceremony, reception, and catering staff.

DO I TIP MY WEDDING VENDORS? WHAT ABOUT FEEDING THEM?

Many times your wedding celebrant may not accept a tip, but if you enjoyed working with them, a nice way to say thank you is to make a

This can be a tricky subject, but in general, the answer is yes. First things first- feed your vendors if they are with you for any amount of time. Your DJ, photographer, videographer, and planner likely have it in their contracts to be fed,

donation to their church or a non-profit they support. Bands and DJs should be tipped, especially if they are lugging heavy equipment. For solo and group musicians, individual tips are appreciated.

Yes. Absolutely yes. The average bridesmaid in the United States spends $1,400 on their duties – hair, makeup, dress and alterations, parties, travel expenses and more. If you are not in a place to drop that kind of cash, say so, especially before you get in over your head. Once you’ve committed, however, unless there’s a very serious reason, backing out isn’t really acceptable. Talk to the bride or groom if money is tight and see if there’s a way to still be a part of the wedding in a more financially sound way, such as doing a reading at the ceremony.

Keep in mind: wedding vendors rely deeply on reviews and referrals. Consider writing in-depth reviews for wedding vendors who did a top-notch job for you on review sites where other couples will see them, such as Yelp, Facebook, WeddingWire, and The Knot, and sharing with friends how much you enjoyed working with a particular vendor.

THE WEDDING Seventy-five guests, including a 12-person wedding party, celebrated their outdoor May wedding at Strong Mansion. “We chose this location because it allowed guests to see the true beauty of the mountain and surrounding areas. We wrote our own vows, and it is a memory we both will cherish for the rest of our lives.” The wedding color palette focused on navy blue tones with cream accents. “We wanted the perfect twist of formal and cocktail. The string quartet added the formal ambiance we were after, while small details made the day more laid-back. I think the most special thing on our day was having our dog, Ollie, there. Ollie had a floral collar and walked down the aisle for the wedding. She stayed for cocktail hour, too, where she was the official greeter for all of our guests.” “My wedding band is modeled off of my grandmother's wedding ring. The gold base of my ring is repurposed family gold from generations prior. Joey's band is made of repurposed family gold from his family, too. Our wedding took place in May because both sets of parents were married in May, and we wanted to share this month with our greatest role models.” Sarah works for Frederick Health, and Joey is the owner of Creek Vintage, where he re-sells vintage memorabilia and clothing. THE PROPOSAL Sierra decided to propose to Taylor when they were visiting Taylor’s family in Morgantown, West Virginia. She took Taylor to a gorgeous overlook called Cooper’s Rock to take their dog Luna for a walk. It took Sierra quite some time before she could gather the courage to ask Taylor. She pretended to tie her shoe and then when Taylor turned around, Sierra was on one knee with the ring in her hand. Taylor said, “I can’t believe that you beat me to it, of course I will marry you!” The two continued their walk in engaged bliss! Frederick Weddings 2022

THE WEDDING One hundred thirty-five guests were in attendance for their Summer wedding. “We decided on Springfield Manor because it was close for both of our families. Plus, we both feel in love with Brian, who owns the venue, because he was beyond organized and extremely helpful. “Our favorite part of wedding planning was when our two families met for the first time at the food tasting. The food was amazing and the interactions our parents had together was even better.” Taylor’s mom and Sierra’s mom read “The Blessing of the Hands” during the ceremony which made the day special to both of them. Seeing Taylor standing at the end of the aisle waiting for her and getting to dance and laugh with friends and family at the reception were some of Sierra’s favorite things about the day. Taylor’s recalls her favorite moments as seeing Sierra walk down the aisle and how happy everyone in their bridal party were – there was just so much smiling and happiness all around! The funniest thing that happened was when Taylor and Sierra were taking pictures in the lavender field, Sierra was stung twice on her butt and twice on her thigh. She ended up running through the lavender with her dress over her head, while Taylor was dying laughing. FIRST DANCE: “Whirlwind,” by Sam Ryder Frederick Weddings 2022

We had a unity candle as well as communion during our ceremony. We kept it short and sweet.” “Our wedding was very traditional. Our colors were lilac and plum with a mid-gray accent. We used a lot of linens and flowers to pull everything together. Ceresville has such a floral and traditional look, so we didn't have to do much to make it come together. THE WEDDING Sixty guests, including a three-person wedding party, were in attendance for their outdoor April nuptials. Their dog Charlie acted as the flower girl. “Andrea’s best friend Emmah was our officiant, and her remarks made the ceremony incredibly personal. We had three readings, one about friendship from Harry Potter, the second about marriage from a Freakonomics podcast interview, and the third was about how ‘Falling in Love is Like Owning a Dog.’” The couple chose a bright citrus color palette for their decor. “We wanted an intimate celebration with our family and closest friends. We like to host BBQs and parties and wanted our wedding to feel like a bigger, slightly fancier version of that.” “One of my favorite aspects of wedding planning was brainstorming with my mom and sister. They are both incredibly creative and talented. I would bounce ideas off my mom for DIY projects, and she would help me figure out how to execute them. My sister created our lawn games sign for cocktail hour. My mom created our welcome sign, the paper lantern installation for our wedding reception, and our s’mores bar.” Andrea is a grants manager at a nonprofit, and Hank is a public health analyst for the federal government. The couple got engaged in November of 2020 on the dock in Old Town Alexandria. “Jordan took me out to our favorite restaurant and then lead me on a walk down by the water. We walked over to a bench to sit when a real-life bride and groom walked in front of us with their wedding photographer. Jordan decided that was our moment, so he stood up, grabbed my hands, and started to ask me to marry him.”

THE WEDDING One hundred seventy-five guests, including a 28-person wedding party, helped the couple celebrate their March wedding at Antrim 1844, with Emily’s uncle serving as the officiant. “We had a beautiful outdoor ceremony in the Rose Garden. We had perfect weather and even though we had such a big bridal party, it still felt like a family affair.” Personal touches during the day were important to the couple. Emily’s godmother made their wedding cake, Emily wore opal earrings that belonged to her great grandmother, and a family friend made their greenery backdrop. The highlight of family involvement was the Pittsburgh cookie table that Emily’s grandmother, Connie, organized and put together. “Family on both sides made dozens and dozens of cookies to make an amazing cookie table. We felt so loved, and it was of course delicious.” Emily is a pre-k teacher in Arlington, and Jordan is an auditor for the federal government. They currently reside in Alexandria, Virginia. SHADES OF BLUE

{

Move over blush, there's a new "it" hue on the bridal fashion scene. Blue dresses ranging from pale periwinkle to more vibrant cornflower were a standout trend. This color gives you the best of both worlds: It's simultaneously a stunning nod to the "something blue" tradition and is also a beautiful way to make a fashion-forward statement with your wedding dress.

STRAIGHT NECKLINES While sleeves were all the rage for several years, the strapless silhouette is back – with some nineties-inspired flavor. This sharply angled bodice high-lights the decollete, neck and shoulders and is a true throwback. While this 2023 wedding dress trend is a blast from the past, straight necklines also work for pretty much every wedding style: Go classic with heavy satin, romantic with glitter tulle or sexy with form-fitting crepe.

trends, crop tops, oversized bows and tulle trains gave the classic wedding pantsuit and jumpsuit an edgy vibe.

THE MOST POPULAR STYLE WEDDING GOWN IS THE FIT-AND-FLARE, FLATTERING ON MANY DIFFERENT BODY TYPES.

BALL GOWNS Sometimes more is more. Although barely there slip dresses were all the rage last season, maximalist ball gowns took over the bridal scene. If you're looking to go opulent and over the top with your wedding day look, consider giving this voluminous silhouette a whirl.

HIGH SLITS

BRIDAL SUITING No gown? No problem. These sleek dress alternatives are comfortable, figure flattering and totally of the moment. Bonus: It's basically impossible to put on one of these tailored ensembles and not feel like a badass. For the 2023 bridal

Va va voom. If you're looking to show some leg and elongate your frame, this is the 2023 wedding dress trend for you. Go full femme fatale with a curve-skimming silhouette that dares to bare or go timeless with a twist and opt for a formal ball gown with an unexpected thigh high slit.

MOCK NECKS

Yes, queen. This high neckline feels inherently regal, and is a timeless way to give basically any wedding dress silhouette a more modest feel. Take a cue from the likes of Grace Kelly with a ball gown with a mock neck, or add balance to a sultrier silhouette with a more conservative neckline. Another thought? Get in on the cottage-core aesthetic with a ruffled dress with an equally frilly high collar.

OPEN BACKS

This 2023 wedding dress is bringing sexy back – quite literally. The bridal take on the slinky "going out" top, this detail is all about showing as much skin as possible from the back. Our favorite part about gowns with open backs? They make your exit just as dramatic as your entrance – and are perfect for some seriously editorial photo ops. Frederick Weddings 2022

BRIDES ARE WEARING BLACK. I DID YEARS AGO AND DON'T REGRET A THING. BY SUSAN SHAPIRO

Special To The Washington Post

KAITLYN AND TRA – Tra popped the question in September of 2020. “With the help of my now mother-in-law, Tra tricked me into thinking we were going to get family pictures. She always talked about wanting her family and best friend to be there – her best friend just so happened to be in town, and graciously offered to take the family pictures. It was the best surprise!” photo: @asummersphoto

KARRI AND CARA – Cara and

Karri took full advantage of their fall wedding and used the colors of the season for their decor. “Karri got a suit custom made in a beautiful burnt orange color. My bridesmaids each different color dresses in burgundy, mustard yellow, taupe, and cinnamon. Karri’s bridesmaids wore olive green pants and white button-ups. The theme was very boho and semi-formal. All the colors came together so beautifully, especially with the fall foliage. We had a lot of greenery for table decor and rose gold accents.” photo: @5thandmarketphotography

I was not surprised to read about the trend of brides wearing black wedding dresses. After all, I'd worn a $200 off-the-rack black floor-length number to my own ceremony in 1996. That was a year before "Sex and the City's" Sarah Jessica Parker famously donned a ruffled onyx ballgown to her New York celebration when she wed Matthew Broderick. Since weddings are back with a vengeance after coronavirus forced the cancellation of indoor events, brides are making their own rules. And what rules is black. "It's our hottest trend," said Laura McKeever, the Pennsylvania-based head of public relations for David's Bridal, the largest American wedding dress chain, with 300 stores across the country. "Fashion is a way to express your individuality and a bridal gown is no different. For women who experienced losses during the pandemic and had to postpone their weddings, there's a sense they don't want to wait. Life's too short," McKeever said. "And they want their day the way they want it, wearing what's most comfortable and looks best. Aside IT'S THE from the dramatic, HOTTEST chic, showstopping TREND." unexpected look, black can be more flattering – and practical. If you're spending a lot on a dress, you want to rewear it."

The shift started with popular black dresses in 2020, she recalled."So many brides had to postpone everything during the pandemic. Now they want to break traditions, stand out, be unique and make a statement."
