NOW WHAT? BY KATIE MACGREGOR, ROSE GOLD EVENTS
Whether you are completely surprised or have been getting your nails done before every dinner date with your now fiancé, congratulations! You’re engaged. Now what? TELL YOUR VIPS Tell your parents, close family and friends in person or with a phone call. They will appreciate hearing it straight from the source and not from an aunt who saw it on Facebook. TAKE CARE OF THE RING If you need to get your ring resized, do that immediately so it doesn’t slip off your finger, or have it expanded so you can wear it confidently. Once the ring is the perfect size, get it insured. Many home owner’s and renter’s insurance policies will cover your engagement ring. Contact the company to see if you need an appraisal and to find out what paperwork it requires.
Frederick Weddings 2017
CELEBRATE! Whether it is a full-on engagement party with family and friends or drinks with your inner circle, celebrate this special moment. Now is the time for a fresh manicure since you will be showing off that ring. RELAX This might sound counterintuitive since I just told you to celebrate your engagement, but trust me, it’s not. You don’t need to have your wedding planned the minute after you get engaged. My clients are engaged for 15 months on average, but I have planned weddings in as few as six weeks. Enjoy the time celebrating your engagement and don’t rush into planning until you are ready.

Engagement
GET INSPIRED Whether you have a secret Pinterest board with your wedding ideas or haven’t given the big day the slightest thought, now is the time to think about your total wedding look. Do you see yourself getting married on a bay in the summertime surrounded by a small group, or do you dream about a laid-back barbecue with 200 of your nearest and dearest? Make an inspiration board with help from Pinterest, Instagram, blogs and wedding magazines to see what makes your heart happy. Think about location and the style of your dream wedding, whether it be a rustic barn wedding or a celebration at a glitzy city hotel.
to feed them, cover their drinks, and pay for tables, chairs and centerpieces. You can always create a B list of wedding guests, and if you find you have room in your budget, invite them later on. Before you begin touring venues, have a guest list in mind to ensure your venue will have enough space for everyone. ENLIST HELP Whether it is hiring a wedding planner or purchasing a wedding binder and maintaining a checklist, make sure you have someone or something to guide your planning. An actual wedding planner will keep you on track with vendor selections, your timeline and many other wedding details. Planners also have relationships with other wedding vendors and can help you find those suited perfectly for you.
CONSIDER YOUR BUDGET Have an honest conversation with your significant other, and with family if they are contributing to the wedding, about how much to spend. Be realistic about your budget and keep track of your spending. Do not go into debt to have your dream wedding. That bears repeating: Do not go into debt to have your dream wedding.
SELECT YOUR BRIDAL PARTY Whether it is with a well-crafted will-you-be-my-bridesmaid gift or a simple phone call, now is the time to assemble your bridal entourage. Your bridal party is part of the wedding planning experience through showers, dress shopping, bachelorette parties and even do-it-yourself crafting if you go that route. If you decide to forgo having a bridal party, skip this step and enjoy bubbles with your fiancé instead.
CONSIDER YOUR GUEST LIST Your guest list goes hand-in-hand with your budget. Obviously, the more guests you invite, the more money you’ll spend

Are you, your friends and family active on social media? If so, you might want to have a hashtag for your wedding. This will allow your friends and family from all areas of your lives to connect via social media outlets to create excitement by sharing images and thoughts before, during and after your wedding. You will want to think about what that hashtag should be early on and incorporate it into your wedding planning so that it’s successful. When deciding what to use, make sure no one else has used it already. My friends and clients have used #meetthemindells, #lindseywedsbryan and #notthefootballmannings. Ideally, you want a unique hashtag for your wedding. If you and your friends primarily use Instagram, don’tworry about picking one that’s a little longer, as you have unlimited characters on that platform and after one use it will auto-populate. If you and your friends use Twitter more often, then a shorter hashtag is better because of Twitter’s character limit. Once you’ve chosen the hashtag, share it with your guests as soon as possible and as often as possible. The best way to do this is to include it in everything they’ll see: save-the-dates, your wedding

website, the bottom of an enclosure card in your invitations, in the hotel welcome bag welcome note, and on the paper goods and signage around the actual wedding. You should also use the hashtag throughout the engagement whenever you are doing something wedding related. Enlist the help of your wedding party early and often to get word out about the hashtag. Make sure all your wedding professionals know about it, too. Your planner should include it on the wedding-day paperwork. You must be prepared to explain what a hashtag is and how to use it to those wedding guests who are not as socialmedia savvy. I explain hashtags as a way to attach your post to a unique search function within a social media outlet. If Snapchat is particularly popular with your friends, consider paying to have custom geo filters for your wedding day and venue. Perhaps the easiest way to do this is through Wedding Wire, which has partnered with Shapchat to do this. It’s easy to find online and you’ll see that they have many predesigned filters that allow for some customization–and not only for weddings, but also for showers, bachelorette parties and other weddingrelated events.

SUMMER
Vibrant colors, sunshine and an abundance of delicious eats all make summer a popular wedding month. FLORAL & BEYOND
Think beyond the bright blooms to add color and interesting texture to arrangements by including fruits and veggies like lemons, limes, oranges, grapes, artichokes, radishes, pomegranates and pears to your centerpiece décor. Do florals give you life? Summer is the time for vivid flowers. Try using strong seasonal blooms like dahlia that can stand up to the heat. A COLORFUL PALETTE
Bright doesn’t have to mean bold. An icy blue hue will give a cool and refreshing feel to a summer tablescape.
Combine natural elements like wood and stone with a touch of glam, like gold accents. Color doesn’t just mean floral. Try hued glassware or plates for an extra special touch. OUTDOOR RELIEF
A summer wedding contingency plan is always important, but don’t forget the other elements Mother Nature throws our way during the summer month – heat and bugs! If you’re hosting an outdoor summer affair, think about offering guests shade and cooler air, either via portable air-conditioning or even handheld fans. Be sure to

have cold drink stations throughout the event, starting before the ceremony. Flavored water or a cold bottle of rosé will go a long way with your guests. You’ll get bonus points for providing bug spray and sunscreen, as well! LIGHT BITES
Keep the menu local and seasonal for a fresh feeling. Heat and heavy food do not mix. Fruit salads or skewers, grilled entrees and salads with local produce will feel festive and won’t make guests feel sluggish, which will mean more time for dancing the night away.

FALL
FALL
Crisp cool weather and earthy color schemes are only two of the many reasons why more and more couples are opting for a fall wedding. In fact, fall is now the most popular time of year to wed! AUTUMN DOESN’T MEAN BROWN & ORANGE Leaves are falling and pumpkins are being carved, but that doesn’t mean you have to theme-out on autumn! Consider other rich and glamorous colors like burgundy and navy. Combine them with creams or blush and a touch of copper or rose gold to add a modern feel and create balance. GET WILD Some of fall’s natural elements play beautifully into any wedding theme. Dried grasses, succulents, herbs, leafy twigs and thistle
add interest and texture, hinting at the season without being overly ‘autumn.’ Love rustic, but still want a modern vibe? Patterns like a bold stripe paired with an organic garland on your table will provide that perfect mix. EARTHY VIBES Fall just calls for comfort foods and warm spices. Use seasonal cuisine that everyone loves to warm the heart, like butternut squash soup, apple pies and tasty cheeses.

And don’t forget your drink! Red wine is a perfect fall beverage and can be great inspiration for any wedding detail. And let’s not forget cheese – rolled in hay from the Veneto mountains. It has a striking appearance and color thanks to the hay. NATURAL ELEMENTS This season nature usually provides beautiful backdrops of changing leaves or even sunflower fields. Take advantage of these free additions to your wedding decor. Make sure your photographer works with you to showcase the magic of the season, including its gorgeous sunsets.

WINTER
Winter weddings are an under-appreciated and often missed opportunity for charm, romance and whimsy, not to mention gorgeous fashion and opportunities to incorporate extra-cozy design elements. GLAM IT UP
KEEP IT COZY
There is no better time than winter to add some sparkle. With the holidays and New Year on everyone’s minds, it is truly the time of the year to shine. Sequin linens with mixed metallic will create an alluring atmosphere. Add lots of candles and the romance is undeniable!
The key to atmosphere at any winter fete is creating a warm and inviting space. Consider textures like knit blankets and velvet pillows on chairs or in lounge areas. Add scents of the season with a sprig of rosemary to each place setting and consider serving a hot beverage upon guest arrival.
Metallics and hues like champagne and pewter are also flattering on many skin tones, so consider these for your wedding party. And don’t feel like you have to wear long dresses just because it’s winter. Chances are you’ll be at an indoor venue anyway!
have your photographer capture the magical moment. THINK OUTSIDE TRADITION
With the holidays, tradition can be front-of-mind during winter weddings, but don’t be afraid to go your own way. Lots of couples are skipping the wedding cake in place of fun mini desserts or interactive stations like s’mores. Exchange EMBRACE THE SEASON the cake for a cheese “cake” – Long-sleeve wedding dresses rounds of your favorite cheeses are totally in and winter is the layered to create a traditional best time of year to wear one. looking wedding cake. SPRING
SPRING
Longer days, porch weather and fresh, new life are all signs of spring. It’s the season most often associated with weddings. PRETTY PASTELS
Peeking out from winter whites are spring’s muted hues. Everything feels fresh and new. Blush and coral paired with greenery are a no-brainer for spring. Tie these colors together with a beautiful invitation suite accented by a custom watercolor, a very popular trend. Hand-written calligraphy adds a breezy touch. LIVELY LIBATIONS
There’s a special feeling you get sipping a refreshing beverage on a porch, terrace, courtyard or
rooftop, and spring is a great time of year to do just this. Give guests a choice of crisp, refreshing cocktails with seasonal fruits. You can even coordinate your beverages to your wedding colors. Sangria features all of our favorite things about the warmer months: citrus fruits, cold sparkling water, and crisp and fruity wines that are best enjoyed when chilled and stirred into a refreshing cocktail recipe. It’s also a great interactive and custom drink option for your guests.

FRESH & NEW
Spring is the season of new beginnings and so apropos for starting a new life together. Flowers are available in so many colors at this time of year, including a wedding favorite – the peony. But you may find some new faves in flowers like ranunculus, garden and spray roses, lilac, lisianthus and anemone. Additionally, spring vegetables like asparagus, kale and ramps, and fresh fruits like strawberries, avocado and rhubarb create tasty options for your menu.

Boudoir Photography
THE SIZZLING NEW WEDDING TREND by cindy alderton
The word “boudoir” — pronounced “bu-dwahr” — originates from French, and refers to a lady’s private bedroom or dressing room. How it came to be associated with photography is anybody’s guess, but we’ll leave it there. Mention the phrase “boudoir photography” and you might get a request to pronounce it again (with a look of confusion). Explain it as intimate, sensual photography for women and more than likely you’ll get a slow look of understanding (followed with a little blush). If you’re a modern-day bride, chances are you know exactly what it is and might even have a plan for a session of your own.
Boudoir Photography WHO IS BOUDOIR PHOTOGRAPHY FOR? In a nutshell, boudoir photography is for all women, but has become especially popular with brides looking for the perfect partner’s gift. If you’ve racked your brain trying to come up with something he’ll adore and that will create an amazing memory, boudoir photos might just the thing. The bonus for you is that you’ll spend a day being catered to, fussed over and pampered– all in beautiful lingerie and clothing you’ve picked just for your session. The outcome will be classy, sexy and perhaps provocative images to share on your wedding day with the one you love. Boudoir photos are the ultimate gift for a bride looking to express her affection and playfulness for her soon-to-be other half. The shoot is a great way to boost self-confidence and have a day away from wedding planning to focus on yourself. A boudoir session can release a lot of pent up prewedding feelings and emotions so you can let it all go – at least for the day!
Chances are your photographer has worked with a few brides along the way and will be able to calm your nerves and reassure you that all will be well, and you’ll have a stunningly sexy set of images key to a successful session. You’ll want someone you feel at the end of it all. comfortable with, as well. HOW DO I FIND A BOUDOIR I WANT TO BOOK. PHOTOGRAPHER? NOW WHAT? As soon as Austin proposed to Bianca at a church overlooking Harpers Ferry in West Virginia, the couple knew they would have two weddings — one in Thailand and one in Frederick. “The month before our Frederick wedding, we had a ceremony in Thailand, where Bianca’s parents live.” With 200 guests in attendance at their Frederick ceremony, Bianca surprised her waiting groom by singing as she walked down the aisle. vulnerability and service to one another. Two of the bride’s cousins sang during the service. Six bridesmaids and six groomsmen made up the bridal party. After the ceremony, the couple changed into traditional Indian garments to honor Bianca’s heritage. Austin wore a men’s kurta, a long tunic worn with pants. Bianca wore a Ghagra choli, featuring an embroidered and beaded long skirt that she designed herself. Many of the women in the bride’s family wore colorful sarees. A color palette of navy, burgundy and champagne helped to create the rustic feel the couple wanted at their reception. When asked why they chose their wedding venue, a Seventh-day Adventist church, Austin said, “It’s our home church and we have such great relationships with our friends and pastor there. It’s home.” Bianca works in the credentialing department of a hospital, and Austin is in the construction industry. They reside in Frederick. FIRST DANCE: “Loving You Easy,” by Zac

Leo and Maia went all-out with their wedding theme of Gotham, the fictional city best known as the home of Batman. “Figuring out how to elegantly incorporate Batman and Gotham into our whole day and other events of the wedding was really fun,” Maia said. Little details showcasing the theme could be spotted around the reception, like Batman and Catwoman masks on the placards. A “Batman Encyclopedia” served as the guest book. The couple also wore Batman and Catwoman masks as they were announced at the reception. “We know how to throw a great party.” The couple chose the Walkersville Fire Hall for their reception venue, “because it was pretty much a blank canvas with amazing chandeliers,” Maia said. Maia and Leo said having their family and closest friends at their wedding celebration was the most important and touching part of the day. “It meant the world to us.” Leo is a Frederick County highway foreman and Maia is an interior designer. Hilary raced home with minutes to spare to set up the surprise video she’d created. When Jacquie arrived, she found a note on the door that said, “Come in and sit down and relax.” A note on the laptop said, “Hit play.” The video was a compilation of clips with Hilary holding posters that read the lyrics to songs that played. At the end, Hilary came out of the bedroom and got down on one knee and proposed. A few months later, Hilary awoke to their dogs running into the bedroom and jumping on her as usual. On one dog’s collar was a box containing a beautiful ring Jacquie had designed herself. When Hilary and Jacquie decided to have a wedding, they knew it would center around Frederick. “We love downtown Frederick,” Jacquie said. “We wanted to take advantage of the beautiful city and spend the day outside with our closest family and friends and our two dogs.” The couple did a “first look” at the Swinging Bridge in Baker Park and took photos as wife and wife in the park after the ceremony, which their two dogs and 28 guests attended. The wedding and reception did not have a specific theme, but the couple used a yellow and white palette throughout their day, highlighted by sunflowers and Black-eyed Susans. Carmen and Chris had a winter wedding to remember. After meeting online and dating for three years, the couple tied the knot in an outdoor ceremony at Mountain Memories at ThorpeWood in Thurmont in January 2016. As part of Chris’ proposal, he put the ring in box in Carmen’s curio alongside her glass figurines. “My only reaction was disbelief, thinking it wouldn’t be until a few months later,” Carmen said. “All I kept saying was, ‘Oh, my gosh! Oh, my gosh! Are you serious?’” After she said yes, the couple enjoyed a special dinner that Chris had prepared. “The wedding ceremony was outside in the woods. The best man dropped the rings as he was trying to hand them to the groom! Apparently his hands were freezing. ADVICE TO OTHER COUPLES: Take full advantage of the scenery that Frederick had to offer in any season to complement the theme. Frederick Weddings 2017

How to have an Eco-Friendly
Wedding by lori himes, abloom, ltd.
I grew up on a local dairy farm, raised by Depression Era parents. Growing our own food and flowers was a norm for me. We practiced good stewardship of the land and repurposed just about everything we owned. These core values have naturally become part of my flower shop practices as well as my lifestyle. Here are some of my pointers on how to reduce the stress on Mother Earth—and on you—while planning your Frederick-area wedding.

Local venues
Planning an eco-friendly wedding in Frederick can be as simple as selecting a local venue and vendors in proximity to it. Keeping it all in the neighborhood reduces the carbon footprint and also has the benefit of saving you some “green” on delivery charges or travel fees that might be incurred when the vendor has a greater distance to travel. Additionally, by having vendors that are near one another, you can group appointments, reducing the number of trips and miles per appointment. A single location for the ceremony and reception is also beneficial as guests do not have to drive to multiple locations. Providing shuttle service from the hotel to the venue not only reduces the number of vehicles used that day, but also provides guests with a safe ride after the event.
Attire
Your wedding gown also provides another opportunity to go green, though perhaps not in color! Having a family member or friend’s dress redesigned will give you a unique gown while creating a sentimental connection to the

previous bride. One of my clients wore her late grandmother’s wedding suit as her going-way outfit, with no alterations needed. The pictures of the bride with her pop were heartwarming. A professional seamstress from a business such at Tracy Lin Creations on Shab Row in downtown Frederick can help guide you.
Locally sourced
Here in Frederick and throughout the county, we are fortunate to have a wide variety of farms that offer produce, meat, dairy and flowers. Many caterers are able to source produce, meat and dairy products without leaving the area. Your wedding flowers can also be sourced locally. Some of my favorites are

Glade Link Farms in Keymar, Greenstone Fields in Purcellville, Virginia, and Petal Patch Flower Farm in Walkersville. When sourcing flowers out of the country, ask your florist to select flowers from countries that practice sustainability, such as Holland and Columbia, as well as countries in Australia.
Staying on budget
Rental props and containers are a good idea as well. There is no waste from containers being tossed after the event, and renting also allows for a more upscale look while remaining within your budget. I offer the bride the option of having my staff pick up any arrangements left behind when retrieving our rental items. The flowers are then taken to a nursing home for residents to enjoy instead of being thrown out after event.
booth at your reception. Shew-sical Entertainment Services, a favorite DJ of mine, can also provide up-lighting and pin-light spots to highlight your cake and floral decor. There are numerous ways to make your wedding eco-friendlier. Bring up the topic during your planning meetings with vendors, as they are your best source for ideas. After all, we are all in this together with Mother Earth.
Selecting vendors that provide multiple services is also a good way to be green. Creative Force Photography in Union Bridge can provide your wedding photography as well as the photo
