7 Things You Should Know Before Your

Wedding 7 BY MARY KATE BATTLES

Having attended more than 250 weddings as a photographer, two dozen as a guest and one as a bride, I guess you could say I’m experienced at this whole wedding thing. One of my favorite things about weddings is how different each one is. Sure, there are always two people saying “I do,” but how, where, when and why they decide to do that varies wildly. I often get asked by couples or those helping with the wedding, “What should I know that I don’t? Any advice?” Oh yes. I could write a book. But let’s break it down into a few easily digestible bits to help you plan your special day.

1

Be clear about what you 2 your3 41to look52 want wedding and feel like. Create a mission statement. Do you want dramatic

Planners are amazing. 7 4 someone 5 who 6 7 Having isn’t related to you or who is not a friend helping with the wedding is huge. A planner not only will call all of your vendors to verify everything in your contracts, but also will ensure the ceremony begins on time, fix the flower girls’ dresses, coordinate an entrance with your DJ and have a word with your misbehaving uncle. They do so many behind-the-scenes things you’ll (thankfully!) never know about. They’ve been there and know what to anticipate.

entrances, bold colors and crazy dancing? Or maybe the two of you are shy and want to have a nice party, but don’t want to be the main focus of the day. Whatever you decide, make sure you and your fiancé are on the same team. Talk about what you don’t want as much as what you do want. Then comes the harder part: Make sure those who are helping to plan and will be part of your day know, too.

7

7

7

7

DIY is not always cheaper. 3 do-it-yourself 41 projects 52 might 63 While seem like a cheaper option, in many cases, they can be a lot more expensive than hiring someone—both in cost and time. Remember that wedding professionals have the ability to buy things at wholesale prices and in bulk. You might not. And don’t forget the time. DIYs are never as easy as Pinterest makes them look. Decide if the night before your wedding you want to be making boutonnieres until midnight or out with friends who traveled to be a part of your day.

It’s your wedding. You don’t

7 “but have5to listen6 to everyone’s, you HAVE tos.” If you don’t want to do a bouquet toss, don’t. Tell your DJ that no matter how many people beg, there will be no “Electric Slide.” You want a barbecue buffet? Ignore your aunt who can’t seem to wrap her mind around it. A wedding should reflect the values and personalities of the couple, not what others think. This can be so hard, but so important. Do what matters most, and allow yourself to forget the rest.

Look amazing, but also be 6 7 I can’t even begin comfortable.

to tell you how many brides I know who purchased sky-high heels for their wedding, only to take them off seconds after the ceremony. If you’re dead set on stilettos, make sure you wear them several times before your wedding to wear them in a bit. Be prepared with blister bandages and shoe sole pads that fit in your shoes. This goes for the guys, too. Many dress shoes are much narrower than typical shoes and can lead to an evening of painful dancing. 2 shoes 3 tend to4be the item 5 that gets 6 While uncomfortable, dresses are also an issue. Make sure you can sit in yours. And dance in it. No matter how beautiful your dress is, if you can’t fully enjoy yourself because you’re so uncomfortable, it’s not worth it.

7

6

Roll with it. And don’t be 7 afraid to ask for help. Things

7

can get stressful and a little chaotic in the weeks leading up to your wedding. What can be hard to remember in the moment is that this will pass. I find that couples get decision fatigue during the end of wedding Frederick Weddings 2016

planning. I did, too. I remember the caterer

asking me how I wanted the napkins folded.

At that point, two weeks out, all I cared about was that everyone got a napkin. Take a deep breath and keep in mind that not everything will be perfect, but it will all work out. And don’t forget you can always ask for help. Your friends and family and even your hired wedding vendors are there to be supportive in whatever ways you need. You just have to ask.

7

After everything is done, it’s just you and your spouse.

Your wedding day is just that—one day. It will be a big, rockin’ unforgettable party, or an intimate and poignant event. Either way, after the food is eaten and your venue cleaned up, all that’s left is the memory and the two of you. When things get stressful, envision yourselves walking back down the aisle as a married couple and try to remember that no matter what font is used on the invitations, what you serve for dinner, or whether you have a cake or a pie for dessert, you’re going to be married. And that’s really awesome. 14

Glam Squad

101 Your guide to finding the best fit for the big day.

Frederick Weddings 2016

22

FrederickWeddings.com

BY MOLLY FELLIN SPENCE, SPENCE PHOTOGRAPHICS

Flawless hair and makeup are the finishing touches to your bridal look. For worry-free beauty on one of the most memorable— and quite possibly most stressful—days of your life, it’s wise to leave the task of making hair and makeup magic to the professionals. And a glam squad is just what the wedding planner ordered. Master makeup artist and owner of JKW Beauty Jordan Winn gave us the skinny on glam squads to help you find the best fit for your big day. What exactly is a glam squad, and how is it different from a regular hair stylist or makeup artist?

A glam squad is a group of stylists who work together regularly. They all know each other’s strengths and can provide flawless beauty services on a swift and effective timeline. They know how to make sure the chaos and pressure do not affect anyone’s mood. They are used to being on-the-go, so they are excellent at setting up in small areas, have an exquisite kit of goodies, and work with the space provided. Glam squads that specialize in wedding beauty understand that a wedding day beauty stylist is more than just someone who does your hair and makeup.

Frederick Weddings 2016

23

FrederickWeddings.com

Glam Squad 101 Should a reputable glam squad offer to do a trial run with me before my wedding? Yes, and that trial should be with the exact artist you would be working with on your big day. It will most likely bring your artist and you closer, help her understand your vision, and cut down on anxiety. Also, you can use the trial run as an excuse to get all glammed up and do something fun, such as a boudoir shoot or a fancy dinner out with the fiancé.

Should I wash my hair before my trial? Hair is best one day old. Wash your hair the morning of the day before your trial. Only put a little product in it—or none at all if at all possible. Blow dry it or air dry—whatever is normal for you—but do not flat iron hair! It will “steam” the hair shut, and make it impossible for it to receive any more heat styling, and this could affect your final result tremendously.

What are some key things I should be able to accomplish from my bridal hair and makeup trial? A successful trial will give you: • An overall look for the wedding day with some variations • A chance to try different lip colors • An opportunity to decide on and finalize hair accessories (with or without veil, etc.) • A connection with your artist (this is very important) and an opportunity to establish comfortable communication with her • A chance to go over day-of scheduling

What will a reliable glam squad do in case one of their artists is ill or otherwise unable to make it to my wedding? There should be some clear clause in your contract that outlines what would happen in the event of an artist being unable to make it to your wedding. It should outline if there would be a replacement artist or not, and should state whether you would get a refund of any kind should this happen. If this clause does not exist in the contract, don’t be afraid to ask for it. Frederick Weddings 2016

HOW MANY PHOTOGRAPHERS DO YOU NEED? by mary kate battles frederickweddings.com editor

As a wedding photographer, one of the most popular questions I’m asked is, “Do I need a second photographer?” The answer: It depends.

a flat tire or other problem. That way, no matter what, there should always be a photographer ready to go. When photographing a church wedding, many times I have my second shooter take off right after the ceremony to head to the reception site. I do this for a few reasons: to scope it out, to get the detail shots before guests arrive and to capture some of the cocktail hour while I’m doing formal shots.

REASONS TO SKIP A SECOND PHOTOGRAPHER: • You’re having a small wedding – When you’ve got 50 guests or fewer, having two photographers can be a lot. When you have a small group, one photographer is less obtrusive. • You’re on a tight budget – If you splurged on your dress and flowers and your budget is at its max, skip the second photographer. Your primary photographer is more than capable of documenting your day on his/her own. REASON TO CONSIDER A SECOND PHOTOGRAPHER: • You’re having a big wedding – No matter how ninja-like your photographer is, capturing images of 250-plus guests can be tough. If getting photos of most guests is important to you, having another photographer is something to consider. • You have several locations for your wedding (hotel, church, etc.) – If you’re getting ready in one place, having your ceremony at another, and the reception in still another location, it’s a great idea to hire a second photographer. That way there can be a photographer with each person getting ready. And it’s a good idea to have them travel separately in case of Frederick Weddings 2016

37

• You’re getting married in a church where you can’t move around – Many churches in Frederick have strict photography rules. Several churches make us photographers stay in one place during the ceremony. So, if there are two of us, at least we can get two different angles. • You want to see your wedding from many different angles – Each photographer comes to your wedding with a different perspective and unique eye. What one of us sees, another might not. I love photos of couples with their family just before they walk down the aisle, but I can’t capture that because I’m at the front of the ceremony preparing to photograph bridesmaids and groomsmen walking in. That’s when having a second shooter is so great. They can hang back and document. FrederickWeddings.com

Colleen &TIM

as told to emily gude, emily gude photography

Colleen and Tim’s story is a doozy! But ends in the best way possible when Glen Ellen Farm steps in. Colleen, the beautiful bride, shares her story: After spending years giggling with my girlfriends about my dream wedding, I was finally getting the chance. Five days before my wedding, everything was set. RSVPs were in, my timeline was finally on its final draft, and I was getting ready to have all my family and friends in town. There was not a thing that could bring my amazing mood down…well, except for a newspaper article. Saturday night before my Friday wedding, my then fiancé comes bursting through our door after work, saying, “Go check Frederick Weddings 2016

47

FrederickWeddings.com

Real Weddings

out The Frederick News-Post! Has anyone from Shade Trees called you? I don’t think we can have our wedding there!” Sheer panic set in as I quickly searched for the article. I started reading, and the further I got, the more the tears built up in my eyes. My venue, the most beautiful place, had been shut down— five days before my wedding, and this was the way I found out. I was devastated. And so on Mother’s Day, my mom and I sprung in to action. My venue was not willing to give me any details, so we did what any logical person would do: Try to find a new location. This seemed like an impossible task, but you know who was up for it? Our vendors, my family, and friends. Not only did our caterer find a new venue in 24 hours, but it was even more gorgeous than I could have hoped. It fit exactly what I wanted for my wedding, and I didn’t even know I wanted it till I saw it. Not only did our caterer find this beautiful farm, but they then helped us change all of our arrangements to fit the new space. All of our other vendors were so willing to meet with us, again, to calm our nerves and assure us that even with the last-minute change everything would be perfect. And you know what? It was, without a doubt, the most beautiful day. I wish I could remember more details about the day (luckily I have the most fantastic photographer to help me with this), but I can remember the feeling perfectly. I remember the love, the warmth, the sheer joy of not only my husband and me, but also the emotion from all of our friends, family and even our vendors. Your wedding day goes by quickly, but the emotions of love and happiness stick with you. And that’s a wonderful thing.

XIAOYU

BY RODNEY COOL, AESTHETIC LIFE STUDIO

The bride and groom got ready on the property at Ceresville Mansion and also decided to have a first look before the ceremony. Having a first look is always recommended as it gives the couple special time together and allows the photographer the ability to capture so much feeling, love and emotion. Xin also had a first look with her father, which elicited a whole other set of emotions and was truly beautiful. Frederick Weddings 2016

51

FrederickWeddings.com

Real Weddings

The ceremony felt very intimate and was held indoors with beautiful florals throughout. The bride’s father led her down the aisle and gave her away to the groom. Once the officiant shared some beautiful insights on the importance of marriage, the bride and groom partook in a sand mixing ceremony to symbolically express their love and the act of two becoming one in marriage. After bridal portraits were taken, everyone made their way into the reception, decorated with splashes of white and red and uplighting all around. When Xin and Xiaoyu were announced, they were toasted by their parents, family and friends. The couple then cut their wedding cake and shared dinner with their guests. Once the couple had their first dance as husband and wife, all the guests joined in to dance the evening away. At the end the night, Xin and Xiaoyu walked out through a sea of bubbles, off to their honeymoon!

Alissa and Kevin’s Stone Manor Country Club wedding featured a coral, tan and mint color palette and perfectly coordinated rustic details. Alicia and Frank of Happy Little Life Photography describe the bride and groom: As a couple, Alissa and Kevin are incredibly fun and genuine. It is hard to find a time when they aren’t laughing or smiling. Their wedding day was truly a reflection of who they are as a couple. From beginning to end, the day was filled with so much joy and happiness. Frederick Weddings 2016

Everything about this wedding was darling, including the sweet father-daughter first sight, and every little detail was personalized. Alissa recalls the day: “As I woke up on my wedding day, after staying with my bridesmaids, we were all excited and ready to go. As we got ready at Stone Manor Country Club, I felt like a little kid on Christmas as I walked around and saw all of the decorations I had worked so hard to create and find over the last eight months. There is nothing like finally seeing your vision come together! My wedding day was picture-perfect, from the guidance and set-up of Rose Gold Events & Styling; to hair and makeup from JKW Beauty; to guidance, timelines, support and beautiful pictures from Happy Little Life Photography; to an easygoing and fun ceremony from Joyce Hilbery; to the entertaining and memorable music from The Dynasty DJs Carroll and Zach Higgins! And I can’t forget the beautiful venue of Stone Manor Country Club and the delicious food from the caterers at Carriage House Inn. Everything happened exactly as it was planned. It didn’t actually hit me that I was about to get married until we are all lined up at the door to walk out for the wedding and one of my bridesmaids said, ‘Alissa don’t cry or get mad, it might be raining just a little bit.’ At the moment, I couldn’t feel mad or cry; I was too excited! Supposedly the ceremony was 25 or 30 minutes, but I’m not even sure, because from the moment I walked down the aisle to the end of the night, time flew by as we had the perfect celebration. My goal was to have fun and have a wedding that would be talked about for a long time. Keira and Ruth had mutual friends in college, but didn’t begin dating until after graduation. After about 10 years together, living in different states and countries, they became each other’s family. One fall day, Ruth set up a bicycle scavenger hunt around the memorials and monuments in Washington, D.C., for Keira. Her task was to find certain words important to their relationship in the quotes at every stop. Keira’s prize for completing the hunt was a camping trip to Assateague Island on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. Since their dating anniversary falls on Halloween, they love pumpkins and everything about fall. So, Ruth carved, “Will You Marry Me?” into two pumpkins, then lit them up on the beach at sunset. They made it official in November 2015 at Caboose Farm in Sabillasville, surrounded by family and friends. Frederick Weddings 2016

as told by the bride

We met in middle school and started dating our sophomore year of high school in 2006. We have been together ever since. So after nine-and-a-half years of dating, I of course said, “Yes! the moment he asked. We had our dream wedding, which included 190 of our closest family and friends! It began at 2 p.m. and we had a traditional Catholic mass at Saint Mary Catholic Church in downtown Hagerstown. Following the ceremony, our guests headed over to Fountain Head Country Club for cocktail hour. My wedding party and I took pictures/video at the church and at the greens of the country club. Fountain Head did a great job and made us feel very welcomed and were extremely professional. Anthony and I felt like a king and queen during the entire reception thanks to their awesome crew. The cake was filled with lemon mousse and iced with buttercream—elegant and exactly what I was looking for. Plus, it wasn’t too sweet, which was perfect for our taste buds. The DJ really made our reception the party it was! Paul Surreal was absolutely phenomenal; I am still receiving compliments about how awesome our DJ was. Plus, he had a photo booth available for us to purchase. Our night was truly amazing and very romantic. I loved how everything was personalized just for Anthony and me. We had a sparkler send-off to make our night complete. To top off a perfect wedding, we stayed at Galley Bay Resort & Spa in Antigua. Upon our return, our highlight video was already complete for us to view. Choosing Kristen J. Ryan Studio was one of the best choices I made. Now I have a perfect video to showcase all the wonderful memories from our wedding day!

Guy Style (or: Don’t Fear the Boutonniere!) BY MOLLY FELLIN SPENCE

Guy Style

B

ack when my parents got married in the 1960s, most (probably all) of the wedding planning was done exclusively by the ladies. Think: “Steel Magnolias,” “My colors are blush and bashful…”.

All eyes were on the bride, and little attention was paid to the guys. But modern grooms are stepping up to the plate and getting way more involved in the planning process. Think: midnight taco trucks at the reception; engagement sessions featuring his favorite ride; or a signature drink mixed

1

up for the cocktail hour. During the last decade or so, guys have really started to show off their personal style on their wedding day, and with great results. For some, this comes naturally. Others might need a little nudge. So, in the spirit of nudging, here are six ways to show of your guy style.

TAKE INSPIRATION FROM THE SEASON.

Having an outdoor, summertime wedding? Consider going without a suit jacket and throwing on a vest or an interesting pair of suspenders, like Lucas and his guys did. Bonus points for completing the look with colorful bowties.

Frederick Weddings 2016

68

2 GET CREATIVE WITH HEADWEAR.

Love wearing hats? Trade your baseball cap for a vintage fedora or stylish newsboy. Go old-school and add a pocket watch, too. Frederick Weddings 2016

Guy Style

3 DON’T FEAR THE BOUTONNIERE. FLOWERS CAN BE FUN… AND MANLY! (SORT OF.)

Try a single flower or small succulent instead of an elaborate rose. Or ask a crafty friend to create something unique. One of the most creative ways we’ve seen florals on guys is Henry’s lapel decoration. I love how his flowers were set inside an old shell casing, a nod to his military service. Frederick Weddings 2016

70

FrederickWeddings.com

4 SHOES CAN BE COMFY AND COOL.

Love to wear cowboy boots, Doc Martens or Chuck Taylors? (I feel you.) Then buy a nice, shiny new pair and don them on your big day. The casual and formal can work well together.

5 SHOW OFF YOUR HERITAGE. Got some Scottish blood? Go for the kilt, like Raymond did on his wedding day.

Guy Style

6 EVEN IF YOU’RE FEELING CONSERVATIVE, ADD A LITTLE BIT OF FLAIR.

Sure, it’s always OK to go with a traditional, classy tuxedo. But try to add a little something fun and unexpected to your outfit. How about a watch or cool cuff links? A pair of stylish sunglasses at an outdoor wedding or colorful socks any time of year are some small but great ideas.
