Q&A
HAPPY LITTLE LIFE PHOTOGRAPHY Alica & Frank
HOW MANY HOURS DO YOU SUGGEST I SET ASIDE FOR WEDDING DAY PHOTOS? A: The easiest answer is … it depends! We meet with our clients to get a sense of their vision for the day and then recommend hours of coverage based on that conversation. A variety of factors will affect the amount of time you’ll need, such as getting ready on-site versus off-site, whether or not you are doing a first look, how big the wedding party is, length of ceremony and whether you want a grand exit photographed, to name a few. It’s important to include your photographer in the conversation about your wedding timeline and trust your photography team to suggest hours of coverage based on their experience. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY STYLE? A: In addition to checking out your photographer’s work online, it’s important to understand how they work. For example, do they blend into the background and capture candid moments or are they going to be more visible and coordinate posed shots. Will they do a mix of both! There is no right or wrong way, but it’s important that you choose a photographer who’s wedding day style will compliment your style and vision for the day. Alicia + Frank are the fun-loving husband and wife photography team at Happy Little Life Photography, documenting adventure one marriage at a time!

SARAH BURNS PHOTOGRAPHY Sarah Burns
Q: SHOULD WE PLAN A FIRST LOOK? A: First looks are dependent on the couple and the timeline. If you are planning a more traditional wedding that includes an extended timeline for photographs after the ceremony and if you prefer to save the excitement in seeing one another for the first time when you walk down the aisle, a first look may not be for you. However, if you’re planning a faster paced wedding and would enjoy a private moment together before hitting the ceremony area, a first look may be perfect for you.
Sarah Burns is a wedding photographer based in New Market. For over 15 years, she has been capturing memories for families, couples, brides and grooms, and businesses.
IS IT STILL COMMON TO DO A RECEIVING LINE AFTER THE CEREMONY? A: You will find that it is not as common to do a receiving line anymore. The thought behind it is a sweet one, but they suck up a lot of time and can leave guests waiting. They also take away time from getting all those family, wedding party, and bride and groom shots you would like captured. A more common approach to greeting and thanking your guests is to visit their tables after you eat your meal. The wedding party is served first and will have time to greet guests while they are still seated at their tables.
WHEN SHOULD WE BOOK OUR VENDORS? A: It is never too early to begin to plan. Right after you get engaged, you can start to think about the look and theme of your wedding. After you know what style you are looking for, you can start to speak with and meet vendors that match your wishes. You can narrow down your search by looking at certain dates or seasons that work with your schedule and vision.

SLEEPING BEE DESIGNS Sarah Rosier
WHERE SHOULD WE PRIORITIZE OUR BUDGET? A: So, you’re getting married and it’s time to build a budget (yes, you need to!). On the long list of things needed for the event, which aspects are most and least important to you? Once you know what those things are, set a budget and stick to it. If something is super important to you and your partner, you might be willing to go above your budget a little bit, which is OK, because you can always adjust something of lesser importance. Items of lower priority can be nixed, or funds can be adjusted. I always say choose three. My top three are food, photography and venue. DO I NEED A COORDINATOR? A: As a coordinator, I must say yes! No one on the guest list should have to be the coordinator or contact. My job as a coordinator is to be the head coach for the vendor team and wedding party. Coordinators cheer on, direct, organize, clean up, fix, and more! I’ve had to sew on buttons, stand in for photographer assistants, assemble tables, fix flower arrangements, be a voice of reason, remind groomsmen where to stand, and make many quick decisions. I’m there for the couple no matter what! HOW DOES TIPPING WORK? A: Always check the contracts first! Some vendors require a tip and/or may offer a percentage suggestion in their contract. Alternatively, if you’re going to give your vendor a thank-you gift instead, make the gift comparable to the dollar amount you’d tip them! Your vendors are human too and a tip or small gift can make them feel appreciated. Sleeping Bee Designs is a woman-owned event coordination company based in Frederick. A wannabe head-coach of your vendor team and goofy type-A, founder Sarah Rosier wants to support you on one of the best days of your life!

THE PROPOSAL Kayla and Brandon grew up down the street from one another and didn't even know it. “We found out that we went to the same elementary school, middle school and high school but didn't end up meeting until our two groups of friends went to see a movie. We didn't end up actually dating until Brandon took me to my senior prom.” The couple got engaged in Virginia Beach in 2019 while visiting friends. “We ended up going bar hopping. Brandon asked me if I wanted to go on the beach to take some pictures. When we were taking pictures on the beach, he got down on one knee and proposed to me.”
THE WEDDING Kayla and Brandon had originally planned an April 2020 wedding, but COVID had other plans. “We had to make the difficult decision to postpone our wedding to the fall of 2020, but with everything still up in the air with restrictions and a vaccine not being widely available yet, we decided to just cancel it with hopes that 2021 might be better. One hundred guests were in attendance, including a 10-person wedding party for their May 2021 wedding at Big Cork Vineyards. The couple chose a bohemian theme for their wedding decor. “We had a lot of greenery, eucalyptus, candles and simple flowers and let the beautiful venue speak for itself. I carried a handkerchief around my bouquet that my mother, her mother and her grandmother carried on their wedding day. Brandon's dad made all the groomsmen, fathers and grandfathers personalized cuff links with fishing flies tied into them.” Frederick Weddings 2021

Brittany &MEAGAN
THE PROPOSAL Brittany and Meagan met in 2017 at Penn State through a mutual friend. “The first time we met, we spent time together at Meagan’s apartment and shared a bottle of wine while we watched re-runs of the hit ’90s TV show ‘The Amanda Show.’ We immediately hit it off and have since then visited Penn State together every year since we met.” Meagan had been planning her proposal to Brittany for months and had contemplated the best location for the big day. “I originally had planned to propose in Ireland, as we had a trip planned, but instead Frederick Weddings 2021

proposed at the site of our first date, Barley & Hops in Frederick. Little did I know that Brittany had been planning a proposal at the same time. Just a few days later, during our Ireland trip, she got down on one knee in the middle of the Guinness Storehouse Gravity Bar in Dublin. Our family told us it was very difficult to keep everything a secret when they knew both proposals were planned around the same time frame. Now it is something we laugh about and is a true testament to how in sync we are with one another.”
THE WEDDING One hundred guests, including an eightperson wedding party, were in attendance for their outdoor May wedding, which included a traditional Celtic hand-fasting ceremony. “Brittany and I chose my parent’s home in Middletown as our wedding venue because it had a beautiful view of Middletown Valley and provided a 3.5acre lot to host a large group of people. It was the most picture-perfect wedding we could have ever dreamt of.” The couple chose a spring color palette of sage green, blush and masala. “We were going for a laid-back wedding and requested guests wear garden party attire, such as sundresses or floral prints. We minimized formality and encouraged our guests to have a good time.”

We’ve been together for seven years now and are so glad we both decided to go.” Caleb proposed the day after Thanksgiving in 2019. “He had been carrying the ring around for a while, waiting for the perfect moment. I’m very hard to catch off guard, so he just decided to pull it out that day out of the blue. It was perfect.” Frederick Weddings 2021

THE WEDDING Eighty-six guests, including a 14-person wedding party, helped the couple celebrate their November multicultural nuptials. “I’m Jewish and my husband is African American. We stood under a chuppah, he broke the glass, and we jumped over the broom. I got married in my mom’s original plain wedding band, just like she got married in her mom’s. He placed it on my forefinger, per Jewish tradition, then after the ceremony, I gave it back to my mom and he put on the band he bought for me.” Jordann and Caleb chose to incorporate the fall season into their wedding decor. “We wanted it to be classy but not black-tie formal. We became best friends during the run of the production, texting constantly and cracking jokes. After the production ended, we stayed friends and started dating.” William proposed in March 2019 during a hike to White’s Ferry with their dog. “Right before Billy got down in one knee, our dog decided to poop, so I ended up being proposed to with a dog waste bag in my hand. THE WEDDING Thirteen guests were in attendance for their August 2020 wedding at Caboose Farm. “We chose to only have immediate family in attendance due to COVID, but it was absolutely perfect. Our ceremony was held next to a creek in the woods, and we had our friend officiate. It was quiet and beautiful, just what we wanted. We were supposed to get married in May, then had to push it back to August. We decided to cut our guest list way down. It was probably the most stressful time in our life, but the fact that we got through it and still had the most amazing day with our close family really put into perspective what the day was really about.” The couple chose a colorful palette for their wedding day decor. “We love color and are definitely not afraid of some quirky touches. From my two-colored wedding dress to Billy’s Captain America boutonniere to our lightsaber exit, we wanted both of our personalities to show quite clearly. Everything was pretty laid back; we just wanted the day to scream ‘joy’ and make people smile and have fun.”

In April 2019, Justin surprised Paige in the living room of his parents house. "He told me he couldn't wait any longer to propose, even though he was supposed to propose at his families annual pig roast. He said once he had the ring, he couldn't hold on to it!"
THE WEDDING One hundred fifty guests celebrated their June 2021 wedding, including a fourperson bridal party at BlueBird Manor in Adamstown. “Even though I consider myself a farm girl, I also wanted my wedding to have a touch of elegance and BlueBird Manor encompassed both of those things. We fell in love with the overall atmosphere and all the space they had to offer for our special day. " One of the bride's favorite parts of their wedding was planning all the decor, from the ceremony to the reception. BlueBird is so beautiful on it's own, so Paige only needed to add small touches here and there to make it theirs, which included a dessert ladder made by the groom and a eucalyptus backdrop for their ceremony in the venue's chapel. Planning a wedding
DURING C OVID
‘‘
My advice is to let go of your vision for the "perfect" day. Don't worry about what others are doing and put that unattainable Instagram stuff out of your brain. Make sure you take care of your guests, make your day a reflection of your relationship, and have fun with it! I never would have imagined that I'd be wearing a bathing suit on my wedding day — but I wouldn't trade it for anything. Oh, and hire a wedding planner! One who is familiar with the Frederick area is a big bonus. You will thank yourself on the day of the wedding when your phone is not ringing with 100 last-minute questions because your planner has you covered. -JACQUELINE CAMINITI
THREE REASONS TO SAY 'I DO' TO A SMALL WEDDING
1
SAVE ON EXPENSES If you have a limited budget, reducing the number of guests allows you to book a smaller, more affordable venue and lower the cost of food, drinks and decorations. Consequently, it may free up money for luxuries like a gourmet menu, designer shoes or live band.
2
FEEL LESS STRESS It's generally easier (or at least less daunting) to plan a small wedding. You will have more venue options, the seating chart will be simple and decorating will be quicker. Plus, if you don't like being in the spotlight, you'll probably feel more comfortable in front of fewer friends and family.
ENJOY MORE TIME WITH YOUR GUESTS A small wedding means you'll have fewer people to greet during the reception. Rather than circulate from table to table all evening, you will be able to spend quality time with loved ones and enjoy every moment to the fullest.
3
“
We decided to elope and do something with just the two of us until we can safely bring family and friends together again. It also gave us some freedom to think outside the box and choose a less traditional route this time around and get creative. - LAUREN STOKES
We got lucky because at the time of our wedding – numbers were really good in the area and restrictions were lowered. Guests could choose to wear a mask or not. We were supposed to have a buffet-style dinner and passed hors d'oeuvres, but all food had to be plated. All in all, the restrictions did not have a huge effect on our wedding. It felt like normal times, everyone had a blast, and not one person got sick after our wedding! WIN! - SARAH JANE SEITZ
We postponed our wedding a year and then ultimately made the decision to have a micro-wedding. - BECKY MARKOVITZ
You’re wedding doesn’t have to break the bank. We got married in our backyard with a few close family and friends. Check out small venues or local parks! Frederick has some beautiful spots. I dried most of my own flowers out of my backyard for our florals. And most of my decor came from local Goodwill stores and antique shops! - MORGAN BRISTOR
I think our wedding for a lot of people was maybe the first time they'd seen a lot of friends together since the beginning of the pandemic, so there was this electricity of that reunion that just made the day even sweeter. - ANNA SOPHIA TRINGALI
WE DECIDED TO POSTPONE OUR WEDDING A YEAR and moved it completely outside to make our guests feel more comfortable. – Alison Maurer

Bridal Boudoir PHOTO SESSIONS ARE NOT JUST FOR BRIDES!
Weddings. For many women, their wedding is the day they will be photographed more than on any other day of their lives. It is a day of professional hair and makeup, of gorgeous gowns, veils and tiaras, and sparkly jewelry.
ARTHUR AND JACQUELINE –“Our
original plan was a black-tie affair at a hotel in Baltimore. Suddenly we went from having our wedding fully planned to having no idea when we’d say our vows. We threw the entire backyard wedding together in about six weeks. Having something to look forward to after months of stress and loss was so refreshing, and our day was more amazing than any ballroom,” said. photo: @ericalynn
MORGAN AND WILLIAM – Twenty-
five guests joined the couple on their wedding day. “We kept it super simple and just about us. My three- year-old son walked me down the aisle. I wore my late grandmother’s cameo ring to carry her with me as we got married under an arbor in the yard." photo: @jewselyphotography
And then, comes the wedding night and the honeymoon. Often, brides are the recipients of gifts of sexy lingerie and loungewear at their bridal showers and bachelorette parties. A growing trend among brides is to put this sexy lingerie to good use – in a bridal boudoir photo shoot!
WHAT’S A BRIDAL BOUDOIR PHOTO SHOOT? It’s a photography session that focuses on sensuous poses, often in sexy or intimate apparel. The intimate nature of boudoir photography makes it a special and meaningful gift for the brides themselves, as they get to spend a day to capture their beauty in such a unique moment in their lives. Also, it serves as an amazing gift to give their spouses-tobe on their wedding day, anniversary and other
occasions. Seeing their gorgeous boudoir photos is an amazingly empowering experience for brides, and that confidence can make the wedding day even more joyful for them. Bridal boudoir photography sessions aren’t limited to brides, however. Think of the other women involved in a wedding – the maid or matron of honor, the bridesmaids, the mother of the bride or groom, and friends. A boudoir photo session is a wonderful and meaningful way for these women to celebrate the wedding of a dear friend, daughter, or new daughterin-law. Who says the bride and groom get ALL the gifts?
