hen you think of wedding jewelry, the first thing that probably comes to mind is wedding rings. And while they might be the star of the show, additional jewelry and accessories can add another dimension to the aesthetic of the bride, groom and wedding party.
Drop necklaces can be paired with a low-cut dress.
Whether your wedding is classic, boho or shabby chic, these ideas are sure to turn heads — and remain lasting mementos of your special day. Frederick Weddings 2019

Drop necklaces can be paired with a low-cut dress in the front. Some brides choose to wear the drop necklace backward to highlight a low-cut back. Colonial Jewelers in downtown Frederick is seeing this trend as a way to highlight the dress and add a touch of elegance. As a way to keep styles dainty and romantic, some brides are sticking to a diamond necklace and diamond stud earrings. Also, of course, many brides still want to wear “something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue” for good luck. Some ideas from Megan Connolly at Colonial Jewelers to help with this are their single drop pearl necklaces and earrings (“old”) and their single gemstone necklaces or earrings (“blue”).
FOR HIM While jewelry might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think about what to give the groom or groomsmen (does anyone wear cufflinks anymore?), there is one piece of jewelry that never goes out of style: the watch.
“I think people are really looking for something that can be worn after the wedding,” Connolly said. “I think maybe that’s why cufflinks aren’t seen too much anymore, because how many occasions will you have to wear them? A watch, you’ll have forever.”
FOR THE WEDDING PARTY When brides are looking for gifts for their bridal parties, they often include a jewelry item. One way to make this gesture more special is to give the bridesmaids necklaces with their initials in them. “Initial necklaces are a nice way to give a personalized gift that will be worn after the wedding,” said Connolly. For the wedding itself, accessorizing the bridal party with boho-styled pieces – flowing gowns and whimsical, fairy-tale features – has been on-trend in recent years.
While it’s pretty rare that a groom gives his entire wedding party watches, it has happened, said Connolly. She said a watch makes a great present for the groom, noting a good watch will also come in a keepsake box. 12
One item that has cropped up on the bridal circuit that fits this bill is the flower crown for brides, bridesmaids and flower girls alike. Hampstead-based artist Emily Zych Suidikas, owner of Whichgoose, has handcrafted flower crowns, barrettes and other hair accessories for more than a decade, selling her one-of-a-kind creations to brides and bridal parties around the world through her online shop (etsy.com/ shop/whichgoose). Her lines have also been carried by Anthropologie. FrederickWeddings.com

A good watch is a timeless gift (no pun intended!) that will serve as a reminder of your special day for years to come.

The most popular watches at Colonial Jewelers this year have been smart watches that have a classical appearance, rather than looking like a sports watch.

EXPERTS m a ry k at e b at t l e s , f r e d e r i c k w e d d i n g s e d i to r
Over the last year, I have been asked a lot of great (and tough!) questions regarding weddings. Even though I’ve been in the wedding industry for over 15 years, I decided this year to ask the true experts — wedding planners! Here are a few of the best questions Frederick Weddings has been asked in 2019, answered by some great planners in our area.
HOW DO I GET MY GUESTS TO ACTUALLY RSVP TO OUR WEDDING? Getting your guests to RSVP is a common frustration for all couples. Although you likely cannot avoid this challenge altogether, here are a few tips that will help.
allow your guests time to consider their plans well in advance of the invitation and have an answer ready when the formal invitation arrives. Third, consider your RSVP method – paper or online. There has been a slight shift toward electronic RSVPs, but not all invited guests will be
First, be sure to give your guests enough time to respond, but not so much time that they feel comfortable setting aside the invitation. I generally recommend no more than four weeks to RSVP. Second, sending save-the-dates, while certainly not required, will Frederick Weddings 2019

comfortable using technology to respond. Be sure to peruse your guest list and include a self-addressed, stamped envelope and standard response card for those guests who are not tech-savvy. Lastly, understand that you will inevitably need to make a few phone calls to guests who fail to respond. Do not wait to do so, but rather begin a few days prior to your RSVP date. When you make contact, be sure to convey both your excitement to have them join the celebration and the need for a headcount to ensure their comfort with a seat and a meal. DO I REALLY NEED SOMEONE TO MANAGE AND COORDINATE MY WEDDING ON THE DAY OF?
timeline and be the point of contact for all of your vendors from that point forward. Most importantly, the coordinator is there on the day of the wedding to make sure everything you’ve planned goes accordingly. The peace of mind an onsite coordinator offers you and your vendors is truly priceless. TERRI EAVES, BASH
HOW MANY PEOPLE CAN I SEAT AT MY DINNER TABLES? If you are using 5-foot round tables and don’t have a charger or base plate, you can seat seven to 10 at the table. If you do have a charger or base plate, you should limit the table to nine seats. If your tables are a little larger, at the 5-feet-5-inch size, you can fit up
Yes, you definitely want to leave the day-of logistics (and problems) to someone else! Many venues now require clients to have an onsite coordinator. (You may come across them titled day-of or month-of coordinators.) If your venue doesn’t, this is something you should definitely have in your budget. Depending on the company, the onsite coordinator will begin working with you about eight weeks before the wedding. They’ll review all of your contracts and make sure nothing was missed, tie up any loose ends, create the

Ask The Experts to 11 without a charger or base plate, and 10 with a charger or base plate. If you are going as big as possible, with the 6-foot round table, you can fit 12 guests without a charger or base plate, and 11 with a charger or base plate. If you are using rectangular tables, you can seat as many guests as the table is feet long. So, if it’s a 6-foot table, you can seat six guests. If it’s an 8-foot table, you can seat eight guests. If you are planning for a lot of decor down the middle of your rectangular tables, make sure you have tables that are either 42 or 48 inches wide. A standard rectangular table is usually only 30 or 36 inches wide, and that will not be nearly wide enough for place settings on both sides and decor down the middle. Your place setting needs anywhere from 12 to 18 inches of depth on the table.

much champagne I see dumped out of untouched glasses at the end of the night. Not having engraved flutes and a “special” champagne toast won’t make those moments or the words spoken any less meaningful. KATIE WANNEN, THE PLANNERY
WE DON’T WANT TO SERVE A CAKE, BUT STILL WANT TO CUT INTO A CAKE TOPPER. WHAT OTHER OPTIONS DO WE HAVE? The possibilities are endless! A lot of couples are dropping the traditional cake cutting and opting into serving an assortment of desserts, like pies, cupcakes, cookies, donut walls, pizza pies, pretzel stations and, other creative ways to optimize the wedding experience. Each year, more creative ideas emerge for wedding desserts that go far beyond the traditional wedding cake. With Pinterest, Instagram, and countless foodie and wedding blogs serving as inspiration, local chefs and caterers whip up exotic and whimsical treats for weddings. Here are some of their ideas.

the cake
“We’re seeing a lot of smaller, more intimate cakes with unique embellishments, like larger, hand-painted flowers, golddrippings, gold leaf, whereas about five years ago, we were doing a lot of fresh flowers on cakes,” says ML Carroll, chef and owner of Canapés Catering service in Frederick. Lois Trout, owner of Stone House Cakery and Cafe in Taneytown, has noticed the same trend — away from traditional, tiered cakes and moving toward “more pick-me-up-and-carry-me items, like cookies,” she says. She points out that smaller desserts in lieu of a large cake does not necessarily mean less expense, especially when you consider that each guest will most likely eat two to three items, as opposed to one slice of cake. So costs end up being about the same.
are huge right now, and people love cake balls, too.” Their imaginative list of flavors is seemingly endless. As Canapés says on its website, “If you dream it, we will bake it.” And it’s true. Carroll and her staff work with people and experiment with ideas to come up with the perfect taste and look for any wedding. Melissa Benson, owner of Eleven Courses Catering in Owings Mills, is another chef who’s noticed the trend in what she calls “passable desserts.” Her company creates “s’mores cyclinders,” a popular new twist on the campfire classic that includes marshmallow mousse and candy pearls. Passable desserts are convenient, but they’re also fun because they add an element of surprise, she says. She’s also noticed that people want eco-friendly desserts, such at Eleven Courses’ Golden Egg Dark Chocolate Mousse, which is served in real eggshells.
desserts on the go favors Lois Trout says Stone House often focuses on dessert bar items, such as shooters (3 ounces of layered dessert), mini cannolis, chocolate-covered strawberries and brownies, for wedding catering.
“We want it to be appealing to the eye and also allow guests to try more than one thing,” Trout says. “If guests are drinking and socializing, they might not want to go back to their table to eat cake. You can hold mini desserts and go out on the dance floor and walk around with them—or pop it in your mouth, and you’re done.” “With smaller cakes, people are adding a bunch of desserts,” Carroll says. “These can be cupcakes, truffles, cheesecakes, fruit bars, gourmet cookies … last year, we saw a lot of pies. Cupcakes especially Frederick Weddings 2019
“There’s a huge trend in cookies with hand-painted monograms as favors for guests,” says Carroll. “People get really into it and match the cookies with their wedding color scheme.” Donuts are also gaining popularity for favors, with new, creative flavors emerging. Couples are also giving bottles of locally crafted honey and dressings as favors, a practical idea that allows guests to use the items at home for months to come.

The conversation sparked instantly, and from that day on Latoya and I have been inseparable.” Frederick Weddings 2019

Along with Renee’s father, Latoya had been planning the proposal when he suddenly passed away. “I knew I had to come up with something that tied him to it.” Latoya planned a dinner at a winery with family. “When we all arrived, there was a private table for us to be seated and everyone had a quote in front of them in a cup,” Renee said. “Once it got to me to read my quote, I purposely didn’t have a quote in my cup, so I turned to her aunt and asked if I could just talk from my heart. I grabbed Latoya’s hand and said, ‘You know how I always say I can’t live without you? Will you marry me?’” One hundred guests, including three bridesmaids and three groomsmen, attended their outdoor September wedding at Ceresville Mansion. “Our ceremony was very special, and our officiant was sure to make it about the love we have for each other.” The couple chose a color palette of gold and green for their decor. “The venue was absolutely beautiful; the pond and pergola sold the venue for us.” Latoya is a commercial truck driver and Renee is a wedding planner. They reside in Baltimore. FIRST DANCE: “I Know,” by Monica HONEYMOON: Cancun

& CODY
Kira and Cody met four years ago through mutual friends. “We met at a friend’s birthday party, even though we grew up less than a mile apart and went to the same high school. That friend ended up being my maid of honor.” Cody proposed to Kira in November 2017 at the Gettysburg National Military Park in front of the State of Pennsylvania Monument. “He asked me to marry him there because that is where he originally asked me to be his girlfriend. It was a total shock.” Frederick Weddings 2019

Real Weddings Including a 12-person bridal party, 110 guests attended their September outdoor nuptials at ZigBone Farm Retreat in Sabillasville. “Our wedding was officiated by Cody’s childhood pastor, which made it really special for him. My maid of honor also gave a short reading of her choice, which was really special.” The couple chose a color palette of burgundy and gold for their wedding decor. “The venue was beautiful. The dancing was so much fun and everyone really came together to make this day the best it could be for Cody and me. We had a peanut butter candy bar because I’m obsessed with anything peanut butter.” Cody is a first-grade teacher for Washington County public schools and Kira is a library media specialist for Washington County Public Schools. Members of their 14-person bridal party were among the 125 guests at their July wedding ceremony. “It was outdoors with a beautiful overlook. We were lucky because it had rained the entire week before, but on our wedding day the weather was sunny and hot.” Blush pink and navy blue made up the color palette for their decor. The couple served homemade macarons as a parting gift. “The venue’s overlook was beautiful and the reception area at Musket Ridge Golf Club was beautiful inside.” Catherine is a teacher and Newton is a program manager. If you’re looking to add something a little extra to your weddingday scene, consider how you’ll arrive. Why go traditional when you could arrive by boat, plane or jet-ski? Or helicopter. Gina Goshorn’s wedding entrance was dramatic, to say the least. Her father, owner of the company Helicopter Applicators in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, flew her and her bridesmaids to the wedding by helicopter. Her father picked everyone up at her grandfather’s house and dropped them off at Ostertag Vistas, the wedding venue in Myersville, Maryland. As they neared their destination, one of the bridesmaids called her mother from the air to alert them to begin playing the bridal chorus, while Gorshorn’s soon-to-be husband Jonathan, and the groomsmen, waited for them on the ground.
“
Most of the guests had no idea they would be arriving from the air, making the event all the more exciting when it happened. Her veil blew and billowed in the wind as she landed, her bridesmaids holding it down before she would begin her walk down the aisle. “It was kind of like my way of having my dad walk me down the aisle,” Goshorn said. “For my bridesmaids, it was amazing because they’d never been in a helicopter before. But for me, it was a really special moment because it was my dad flying me in. It was emotional, a special moment between me and my dad.”
TAKE IT ALL IN, AND ENJOY EVERY MOMENT! Because it will be over before you know it. Take advantage of the beautiful places that are here in Frederick. – MaryAvery Toms Frederick Weddings 2019

TIPS TO KEEP YOUR BRIDESMAIDS HAPPY from TLC Bridal Boutique
BY LAUREN LAROCCA
Everyone knows what it’s like to deal with a Bridezilla, or they’ve heard the stories. But even with the best intentions, brides might not always know the best way to handle their bridal party and how to get them not just on board, but excited, about being part of their wedding. Here are some ideas to consider: If you’re having a spring wedding, order the bridesmaids gowns in June or July of the previous year. “Order when the girls have money,” said Suzi Way, a manager at TLC Bridal Boutique in downtown Frederick. “If you wait until October or November, you’re getting into Christmas and holiday season, so it becomes an added burden.” Choose the color, but not the style. Let your bridesmaids choose their own style, so that they have some flexibility to find something that’s comfortable and flattering for them.
“Our catering was 100% vegan and you would never know. We had pizza and lasagna and cannolis and cupcakes. We loved how our Italian inspired menu turned out.” photo: @leighannebraderphotography
“We got married in the middle of the field next to our house across from my parents farm overlooking the farm and other fields. The scenery was perfect.” photo: @asummersphoto
Check ahead of time to be sure the bridal shop your bridesmaids are going to has sizes over 12. Many shops don’t carry plus sizes because they cost more to order. “There’s nothing worse than having someone in the bridal party there who can’t try anything on because there’s nothing in her size,” Way said. Consider throwing a little party just for the bridesmaids. “In a lot of cases, all the bridesmaids don’t know each other,” Way said. TLC offers something called the Bridesmaid Exclusive, where the bridal party can come for food and drinks right there at the shop. “It’s a nice little ice breaker,” Way said, “and it adds some excitement to the whole experience.
