Middletown Business Trivia! Gladhill Furniture Store is the oldest business in Middletown, it has served customers since 1915. More Ice Cream is located in what was the former Parsonage for the Zion Lutheran Church. Inside of Wren’s Nest at the rear of the Mid-Maryland Farm Market, there is an unusual item on the back wall. It has been researched and determined it was a circa 1850s era safe, and the most likely place where the money was kept to pay the Confederate soldiers who ransomed Middletown in 1864. Middletown’s oldest building, the Smithfield House, circa 1780 is now the office for the niche business, Sky Azul Equipment Solutions. They sell and service monitoring systems for heavy construction and mining, as well as specialize in helping North American customers market cranes and other large equipment to Latin American with export logistics support. Middletown had two car dealerships: Reed’s Garage which was located near Gladhill Furniture and the Model Garage whose show-room is now the Asian Cafe. Did you now that the Arnett Grocery Store was located at 1 West Main Street? Middletown had several factories! One was the Ice Cream Factory located within what is now The Main Cup, the Hanover Shoe Factory is now the South Church Street Business Center which is home to several businesses, and a Cannery on East Green Street, near today’s Custom Marble Shop.
