Straight No Chaser
Tuesday, September 14 | 7:30 PM Live Series
Straight No Chaser is reinventing the idea of a cappella on the modern pop landscape. Originally formed while students together at Indiana University in the 1990s, the group reassembled and reemerged as a phenomenon in 2006 with a massive fan base, numerous national TV appearances and proven success with CD releases. They’ve collaborated with Paul McCartney, Stevie Wonder, Elton John and Dolly Parton, to name a few. They’ve performed on national TV early in the morning, on Today; and long after dark, on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. They’ve toured North America, Europe, and Australia, and consistently rank among Pollstar’s top 100 touring acts in North America. After the founding members of Straight No Chaser graduated in 1999, they got jobs, found love, and made lives for themselves as new undergrads replaced them in the group on campus. In 2006, Stine posted a clip on YouTube of Straight No Chaser singing “The 12 Days of Christmas” at a 1998 performance, and it went viral. Atlantic Records Chairman & CEO Craig Kallman saw it and contacted the guys to see if they would be interested in reuniting to make an album. Fifteen years later they have no intention of stopping.

Men Are From Mars Women Are From Venus Live! Saturday, October 16 8:00 PM
The Honey Dewdrops Thursday, October 7 | 7:30 PM Discovery Series
Americana duo The Honey Dewdrops – Laura Wortman and Kagey Parrish – have long felt the push-and-pull between their roots in the Appalachian Mountains and their present home in Baltimore. You’ll hear it in their harmony-soaked songs and the mastery of their instruments’ acoustic tones, but also in their song-writing, which reflects the hard realities of today. The Honey Dewdrops combine a high lonesome duet harmony vocal style with contagious energy, soulful new songs and a fresh angle. The result, with guitars, a banjo and a mandolin, is a sound that welcomes you in like a dear old friend. Warm and honest, the Dewdrops fill up a room with sound and spirit. With their fifth independent release, Anyone Can See that came out in March 2019, they have primed the creative energy so prevalent on their previous releases. Each song sparkles with focused intensity, and, with their new album, the duo show that they’re growing rapidly as artists, enthusiastically exchanging an impossible quest for perfection for the compelling ebbs and flows that accompany an intimate, authentic kind of expression.

The band linked up with Grammy- winning producer/engineer Scott Jacoby (Coldplay, Vampire Weekend, Ronnie Spector) to record Most Of Us. Following that album’s 2016 release, the band then toured coast-to-coast with powerpop songstress Rachael Yamagata in 2017, along with its own headlining shows along the Eastern Seaboard. Silent Old Mtns. began in the Spring of 2011, when a one-off concert snowballed into a fulltime regional act. They released their debut album, Velvet Raccoon, in 2012 and began touring nationally averaging 100 performances a year from 2011-2013. In October 2013, the band decided to take a hiatus, which lasted until July 2015. After reuniting, the band released a new song in October 2015 titled Trenches. After the release of Trenches, the band began writing new material that would become the makings of a sophomore record, Gary, released in December 2019.
The RT's
Artist Bios
They say it takes nearly a decade for a wine to mature. The same could be said for The RT’s (formerly The Rad Trads). If you caught their brand of raucous, beer-soaked trad jazz and blues in the early days, you see the same ingredients (boisterous horns, impassioned vocals, and a driving groove) but a new flavor, and the kind of maturity and subtlety that only comes with time. That’s why it felt like the right moment to change the band’s name. Their forthcoming self-titled album – out Oct 22 – celebrates these changes. The album’s first single “Need You Right Now,” a punky staple of their pre-pandemic touring repertoire given the same genre-bending, postmodern update that prompted the name change in the first place, is a reminder that The RT’s remain the band that many audiences have danced to all over the globe with its rubbery bass line, seductive groove, and infectious energy. Charged with a new enthusiasm, the members of The RT’s are ecstatic to be back in front of crowds, playing all new music from their 2020 record See You Again and the upcoming release, The RT’s.

Sideline & Hopslop String Band Friday, November 5 | 8:00 PM Live Series
Sideline and Hogslop String Band, two powerhouse bluegrass bands founded on the principles of pure, rowdy, unadulterated southern roots, perform back-to-back for a night full of pulse pounding beats. Sideline is a 6-piece group hailing from North Carolina that began as a side project of three seasoned musicians before catapulting to fame. Founding members Steve Dilling, Skip Cherryholmes, and Jason Moore have over 20 years’ worth of genre defining performances each, including several appearances at the Grand Ole Opry. The three founders along with newcomers Zack Arnold, Jamie Harper, and Jacob Greer began turning out albums in earnest in the last decade resulting in the group winning the IBMA Song of the Year Award in 2019 for their single “Thunder Dan.” Hogslop String Band hails from Tennessee and finds its roots in an old school love of classic string music. To call Hogslop solely a string band, however, wouldn’t be quite accurate. Hogslop specializes in boundary pushing old time string music, infusing elements of psychedelic rock, country, and pop level stamina to create classic string music with a modern feel. The band has won every major string band contest in the south, and in 2019 they released their first self-titled studio length album.

Oscar nominee, six-time Grammy-winner and 2018 USA Fellow trumpeter/composer Terence Blanchard headlines this year’s Frederick Jazz Festival. Blanchard received an Oscar nomination for his original score for Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman. He was also BAFTA nominated for his original music for the film. He won a Grammy for Best Instrumental Composition for writing “Blut Und Boden (Blood and Soil)” a track from BlacKkKlansman. With his current quintet The E-Collective, featured on the score to BlacKkKlansman with a 96-piece orchestra, Blanchard delivered “a soaring, seething, luxuriant score,” The New York Times. A meeting of two American music giants in a legendary setting, Leftover Feelings is neither a bluegrass album nor a return to Hiatt’s 1980s days with slide guitar greats Ry Cooder and Sonny Landreth. While the up-tempo songs are filled with delightful internal rhyme and sly aggression, The Jerry Douglas Band’s empathetic musicianship nudges Hiatt to performances that are startlingly vulnerable.

Our Histor
Two days before Christmas 1926, a sell-out crowd of more than 1,500 people gathered at Frederick’s plush new movie palace — the Tivoli Theater. Built by the Stanley Crandall Company at a cost of $350,000, the Tivoli offered an atmosphere of refined elegance.
Theater-goers marveled at the modern centerpiece of it all: the magnificent Wurlitzer organ. Installed in 1926 at a cost of $18,500, it continues to entertain today’s audiences during silent movies and sing-alongs. The Weinberg’s is the only Wurlitzer in Maryland still in its original installation. The Weinberg was Frederick’s first air-conditioned public building, all due to the 1939 and 1940 American Horse of the Year, Challedon. Locally-bred Challedon’s owner, W.L. Brann, and Dr. Edward Thomas, a race fan and patron of the Tivoli accompanied the horse to race in the 1940 Hollywood Gold
36 2021-22 SEASON
Cup. At a pre-race party, Warner Brothers head Jack Warner was overheard saying he was going to bet $50,000 on the favorite. Thomas convinced Warner to bet on Challedon instead. When Challedon won the race and a hefty sum for Warner, Warner asked how he could return the favor. Thomas’s request was to install air-conditioning at the Tivoli, and Warner made good on his offer.
The Tivoli fell into disrepair during the 1950s. In 1959, Dan and Alyce Weinberg purchased the building for $150,000 and restored it to its former glory. By the 1970s, downtown Frederick was deteriorating, and the Tivoli struggled to compete with modern movie theaters. Its struggle reached its low point when storm-driven waters flooded the theater and downtown Frederick in 1976. The water peaked three feet above stage level, submerging the seats and floating the Wurlitzer
ry
onto the stage. Community members joined forces to salvage the historic landmark—organ and all. After sixteen months, the theater reopened as the Weinberg Center for the Arts, honoring the Weinberg family, who gifted the theater to the City of Frederick. The Weinberg has drawn such famous names as Marcel Marceau, Hal Holbrook, George Carlin, Judy Collins, Tammy Wynette, Garrison Keillor, the Temptations, Michael Moore, and Tom Jones. Today, the center is owned and operated by the City of Frederick, with the support of the Weinberg Center for the Arts Inc. — a nonprofit organization created in 1995. Thanks to a successful capital campaign begun in 2008, the theater was renovated in 2011, once more restored it to its former grandeur.
