Encore! Encore! After virtual rehearsals, singing group returns to in-person performing

S

inging just hasn’t been the same for Frederick resident Margie Wilde since the COVID-19 pandemic began. Over Zoom, Wilde has a hard time telling whether she’s flat or sharp, and she can’t hear the other vocalists. She also can’t exchange a side glance to convey understanding or confusion. While Wilde, 75, is grateful Encore Creativity for Older Adults pivoted by offering virtual rehearsals and concerts, she’s looking forward to seeing her friends in person again. “It’s more fulfilling,” Wilde said in an interview. Encore Creativity for Older Adults, America’s largest choral organization for adults over 55, recently announced it will return to in-person singing in September. Registration is open for Encore Chorale of Frederick, of which Wilde has been a member for about five years. There are other Encore chorales throughout the state, as well. The local choral group sings a variety of music from across the eras, and will meet at Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Frederick, 4880 Elmer Derr Road, Frederick, from Sept. 9 to mid-December, from 10:30 a.m. to noon Thursdays. The program will culminate with a free concert in December that will be open to the public. Encore is also continuing to offer online options, in addition to in-person groups. No auditions are necessary. The nonprofit’s mission is to “provide an accessible arts education and performance opportunities for older adults 4

“I called my girlfriend and I said, ‘We have got to join this,’” Wilde said. Wilde was a speech and drama major in college. Singing has been a lifelong joy of hers.

She fondly recalled performances at The Kennedy Center and DAR Constitution Hall among her favorite memories of Encore. The Frederick group is directed by Deb Int Veldt, who taught secondary vocal music in the Montgomery County school district for 20 years and has taught voice and piano privately in her home. “It’s really been a hard year for singers,” Int Veldt said. She acknowledged singing in groups became notorious for spreading COVID-19 in parts of the country, so Encore was quick to transition to virtual gatherings. The organization launched Encore University, which offers online rehearsals and classes. Directors made videos to keep their singers engaged and offered virtual rehearsals and concerts, according to Int Veldt. Many people stuck it out—

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Encore Creativity for Older Adults launched Encore University, in which performers rehearsed virtually.

sometimes Int Veldt had 100 people in her Zoom rooms. Since online video meetings can easily be affected by internet lag, Int Veldt conducted classes so each singer could only hear themself, the director and piano. Others chose not to participate, and Int Veldt doesn’t blame them. Middletown resident Bill Spare, who’s been singing with the Encore Chorale of Frederick for about three years, struggled to find satisfaction singing in front of a computer screen alone. It just didn’t feel right. In a separate group Spare attends, singers were

invited to record their parts separately so they could be stitched together in a video. Spare, 73, didn’t find the feeling he was searching for there either. He misses the fellow bass vocalists he’s come to know. “I just think it’s going to be great to be back in person,” he said. Spare and Int Veldt each described the power of voices blending together when singers gather face-to-face. “The thing about choral singing is this magic that is created with all the singers around you,” Int Veldt said. But when everyone is together, voices tend to mesh beautifully. “I’m so excited, I just miss all my sing-

ers so much,” Int Veldt said. “In person, we have a ball.” Wilde agrees. “I like to hear the harmony,” she said. “It’s just not the same as doing it in person.” The founder and artistic director of Encore is also looking forward to the return of some normalcy. “We are thrilled to return to in-person singing and live performances in Frederick,” Jeanne Kelly said in the release. “Our singers not only learn about the craft of singing and improve their technique, but they can now enjoy socializing and bonding with a new community of friends, which is so important.” THE FREDERICK NEWS-POST

For Wilde, September can’t come soon enough. “I’ve made a lot of new friends that I haven’t seen for a year-and-a-half,”Wilde said. “I really look forward to seeing them again.” Encore options: Online and in-person options are available. Registration is open for Encore University, an online series of afternoon rehearsals and classes that meets Monday through Thursday at 1 p.m. for the See ENCORE, 17 |

Preserving the Past Friends of Mount Olivet brings history to light cleaning headstones

rmed with industrial spray bottles, a variety of scrapers and scrub brushes, a group of history lovers cleans off older headstones at Mount Olivet Cemetery on South Market Street in Frederick every Thursday morning. They’ve been scraping, spraying and cleaning a few hours every week for the past couple of months.

“I look at it as somebody who cared about this individual and wanted their name to not be erased from history, so we’re kind of bringing them back to life— bringing them back to somebody’s memory.” –Nanette Markey The people in the squad are part of the Friends of Mount Olivet. In 2017, the cemetery created the Preservation and Enhancement Fund in order to maintain and repair gravestones on the property and preserve the history of the cemetery. The Friends group, established to generate enthusiasm and fundraising opportunities for the cemetery, is a product of that fund. It’s primary goal is unwavering: to keep the history alive. The headstone cleaning is just one aspect of that, and 6

we’re kind of bringing them back to life—bringing them back to somebody’s memory,” said Friends group member Nanette Markey, 67, of Frederick.

In Many ways, Markey is a leader of this process since she began cleaning headstones in 2020 and continued throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

ABOVE: Nanette Markey cleans headstones at Mount Olivet Cemetery. RIGHT: When cleaning old headstones, after the stone is treated with a chemical called D/2, small plastic scrub brushes are used to attend to its finer details.

It’s something she’s fallen in love with and hasn’t stopped. The group cleans in the oldest parts of the cemetery, where the majority of the gravestones are made of marble. While newer gravestones are typically made with granite that lasts much longer, marble begins to deteriorate after about 80 years. It’s porous, so it absorbs all the elements, cemetery superintendent Ron Pearcey said. They begin the cleaning process using plastic scrapers to remove any lichen or other organisms stuck to the headstone. They then spray a chemical called D/2 to draw out the years of dirt and grime and let it rest for a few minutes.

D/2 is the same chemical used to keep skyscrapers and other buildings clean. When green seems to sprout out of the headstone as a reaction to the D/2, it’s rinsed with water and then scrubbed with a plastic brush to get off harder spots. Smaller brushes are used to attend to a stone’s finer details, like names or other engravings. The group makes sure to use only plastic scrapers and brushes so they don’t damage the headstone during the cleaning process. Finally, they apply one more spray of D/2 for good measure. The sun does the of the heavy lifting. Over the course of the week, the headstone goes from a black to a dusty

yellow until it finally becomes a pristine white, looking good as new. “So that’s preserving it, so that’s to get rid of all those dangerous elements that are in there, so now the stone’s THE FREDERICK NEWS-POST

Divorce and Estate Plans

W

hile your divorce is ongoing, make sure to meet your legal obligations to your spouse while exercising as much control over your assets as possible. Financial law is full of provisions designed to protect your property if anything happens to you, which is just as important during a divorce as it is at any other time. Here are eight things you need to do: • Update your health care proxy. Who will make health care decisions for you if you cannot? Your health care proxy is probably your spouse, so ask yourself whether you trust your spouse to act in your best interests. • Change your power of attorney. If you have a durable power of attorney, it gives your spouse access to all your accounts and assets—even assets that are in your name only. If the divorce isn’t amicable, you’ll probably want to revoke the old power of attorney and draft a new one. • Find out what you can and cannot alter. You might not be able to change beneficiary designations on life insurance, retirement accounts or plans such as your 401(k) and pensions at will. In some states, the designations have to stay until the divorce is final. Filing for divorce places an automatic restraining order on your assets, including beneficiary designations. • Update your will. If your state allows you to execute a new will, do so. Do you want your current spouse in charge of your estate? You may want to remove him or her as executor. How about guardianship of minor children? You can name an alternate guardian. • Decide what to leave your spouse. If you disinherit your spouse completely, you can expect a legal battle. In many states, it’s impossible. Leave your spouse only what he or she is entitled to under the laws of your state. • Review your prenuptial or postnuptial agreement. This will tell you what your spouse is entitled to in the event of your death. • Amend your trust. If your state allows, amend your revocable trust. The key issue is what assets to leave your spouse. You may want to remove gifts for her or his family. If the trust makes provisions for 8

Reexamine trust provisions for young children. Do you want your spouse managing and having access to monies for your children? Should you have a revocable trust that will name someone as trustee? Otherwise, your spouse is your children’s guardian and he or she will have the right to access and control your money for them if you die. • Revisit the plan after the divorce is finalized. Once the divorce is set, revisit the estate plan to see what needs to be updated. Don’t overlook beneficia-

ry designations. If your ex-spouse is named to inherit the assets, it can result in litigation and unintended consequences. Make sure your estate plan reflects your life change. You may consider yourself to be a single person during the course of the divorce, but until the proceedings are over, the law does not. It’s unlikely that you’ll die or become disabled while the divorce is ongoing, but that’s no reason why you shouldn’t move as quickly as possible to protect yourself and your estate from your spouse’s control. Discuss your needs with a trusted estate attorney. Share your divorce agreement when it becomes finalized so that your estate attorney will know what obligations you have to your ex-spouse. –from the Law Office of Lena A. Clark 129 W. Enjoying Frederick’s Accessible Locations

M

any of us fondly remember the vacations we took either growing up or as adults. As we age, we might still crave little escapes with our loved ones despite mobility or attention limitations. Frederick County is a destination that many people love. You can enjoy the county by going on short outings to its many accessible attractions. As with any trip, doing some planning is important. You’ll want to take into consideration limitations you or anyone you’ll be going with have. How long can you stand before needing to sit? How far can you walk? Would using a wheelchair be best? Do you need ready access to a restroom? Do you need to time your trip around medical needs (e.g., medications or treatments)? There may be neurological concerns you should consider while planning. Should certain types of sensory stimulation be limited/avoided? Is it best to time your trip so you’re home by a certain time of the day? What should the maximum duration of your outing be? Does the person you’re bringing cooperate well with you? Keeping in mind these limitations, would it be best to bring someone along for an extra set of hands? Once you’ve determined the limitations you need to plan around, you can consider the many options Frederick County has for you. What do you and your loved one enjoy? History, art, the great outdoors, or perhaps a nice scenic drive? History fans have many options: the National Museum of Civil War Medicine, Rose Hill Manor Park, Brunswick Heritage Museum, Monocacy National Battlefield Park, Heritage Frederick Museum, Seton Shrine & Museum, and also the Francis Scott Key monument in Mount Olivet Cemetery are 10

all accessible destinations. For art lovers, a walk along benchlined Carroll Creek with its decorative bridges, seasonal-blooming tropical water plants and kinetic sculptures is a sure hit. The Delaplaine Arts Center has art exhibits by artists from around the country all on one floor. If spending time out in nature sounds appealing, you and your companions may enjoy the county’s many parks with ADA accessible trails of various lengths that can also accommodate those who use a wheelchair. Catoctin Mountain Park’s paved Spicebush Nature Trail (0.3 miles) and Monocacy National Battlefield Park’s Gambrill Mill Trail (0.5 miles) are

both wheelchair accessible. Cunningham Falls State Park has ADA-placard-only parking on Route 77 with a bench-lined boardwalk to Cunningham Falls. Both Fountain Rock and Catoctin Creek Park & Nature Center are ADA accessible and also have paved walking trails. Those who prefer a driving tour might consider visiting one of the county’s three historic covered bridges: Utica Covered Bridge in Thurmont, Loys Station Covered Bridge in Rocky Ridge and Carroll Creek Covered Bridge in Frederick. Add on a drive through Catoctin Mountain Park and Cunningham Falls State Park to loop through the northern part of

the county. Monocacy National Battlefield Park has a self-guided driving tour of the battlefield, complete with an audio tour that can be found on its website. Predetermined bike routes throughout the county can be easily followed as driving tours. A self-guided driving tour of downtown Frederick might also be fun. Once you decide what sounds appealing, call your destination to get any questions you have answered. years, he said, until someone has to come and spray the headstone again. It sounds like a simple task: Scrub down a headstone and then spray it with the magic chemical. But the roughly five-person cleaning group has to repeat this process on a at least 16,000 headstones. As a group, they had finished roughly 152 headstones as of last month. “I’m thinking we won’t get through these [headstones] in our lifetime,” said Friends member Heather Sutton, 64, of Frederick. But they’re dedicated to their mission. And there’s the instant gratification of seeing a dirty, sometimes illegible, stone that seems beyond repair become pristine, white marble once more. Some Friends members, like Jennie Russell, 65, also of Frederick, have generations of family buried in the cemetery and therefore have personal ties. There’s a sense of responsibility in her work, she said.

The cleaning process begins using plastic scrapers to remove any lichen or other organisms stuck to the headstone.

Many in the group see it as their duty to ensure each deceased person whose stone they clean is remembered. Friends member and Frederick resident Gary Brown, 68, used the wise words of Chris Haugh, the cemetery’s community relations & historic preservation Manager, to emphasize the importance of what they do.

Sudoku

Here’s How It Works:

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
