tories tell where we came from, and where we’re going. Stories bind us to each other.

Stories are our humanity, among love and trouble, that we make meaning of our lives.

Story is what defines us and sets us apart.

It’s what allows us to connect with each another, to truly know and be known.

Stories are powerful. They are a big part of our daily interactions, and I have been blessed over the past few years to hear many about our amazing community. There are the legendary stories of the Israel Showcase, the resettlement of Russian Jews and hosting the Maccabi Games to name just a few.

I love and appreciate hearing all of the stories. It is one of the things that makes my role so special. If I am being honest, however, it is the stories that don’t often see the light that make me proudest of our community.

I thought it would be nice to share just a few, and let you enjoy some of that pride, because the reality is, you enable and power these stories.

Eighteen months ago our community came together to launch the Jewish Care Line – a confidential phone line available to assist and support Jews in need. The Care Line, operated by our amazing partners at JFS Richmond, has supported and helped many families in our community.

One story stands out for me. The Care Line professionals received a request for emergency assistance from a woman living in an abusive environment, financially unable to leave. Quickly the Care Line team sprung

into action and provided the financial, emotional and strategic support needed to remove her and her family from this horrible situation.

Today, I understand she is living in another state, safe, sound and supported.

The second story occurred when Ellen Renee Adams, Amy Nisenson, Jesse Feld and I traveled to Argentina this summer. During one of our visits we came across Nicholas. A strapping 20-year old who held down a full time job, he participated fully in Jewish life in Buneos Aires. As we came to hear, Nicholas took care of his three younger siblings. Nicholas had lost his parents and grandparents to a series of tragedies and found himself as patriarch of the family.

Hearing his story brought tears of sadness and joy at the same time to us. You see he was clear; his place in life was part of G-d’s plan

and it was all OK because he had his Jewish community and was being helped by JDC. He said they became his family and his support.

I found him after for a quiet moment and thanked him for sharing his story at which time he forever embedded his story in me.

He shared that yes, he would prefer to be at school, partying and having fun, but that his path is different and that is OK. He gained great strength in knowing that Jews around the world stand behind him and have his back.

The last story happened just a few weeks ago at Shabbat Dinner with Rabbi Yossel Kranz and my family. At the end of a delicious meal and after a little text study and conversation it was time to say the blessing after the meal.

There in a Rabbi’s home, he let my boys chime in and volunteer to lead the Birkat Hamazon. I’ll be honest, I got nervous about what was about to happen. After a short reminder and kick start, we all were singing the Camp Brikat in full throat, accompanied by table banging and all of the silliness of Camp Birkat.

It reminded me that regardless of our backgrounds, level of practice, ideology or politics, the Jewish story, history and memory truly does run through all of us. Sometime we need a reminder and thanks to Nicholas, The Jewish Care Line and that crazy, but joyous Birkat Hamazon was my reminder.

Planting the seeds of neighborly love

By Rabbi Ahuva Zaches here’s a famous story in the Talmud (Ta’anit 23a) about a man named Honi, who was walking down the road.

Along the way, he comes across an older man planting a carob tree. Honi looks at the elderly man toiling in the soil and asks him, “How many years will it take for this tree to bear fruit?”

The man answers him, “Oh, about seventy years.” Honi has seen a number of miracles in his day, but for this old man to live another 70 years might be the biggest miracle yet!

“Are you sure you will live another 70 years?” asks Honi.

The old man answers, “Probably not.

But I was born into a world filled with carob trees. Just as my ancestors planted for me, so, too, am I planting for my descendants.”

We often tell this story around the holiday of Tu Bishvat, meaning “the fifteenth

day of the Hebrew month Sh’vat,” when we celebrate the Jewish new year for trees.

Usually Tu Bishvat falls in the month of January on the Gregorian calendar. But this year, it falls in February when many people are celebrating the value of love. While walking into any number of stores this month, we are immediately greeted with little symbols of love: heart-shaped candies, roses, romantic cards, and jewelry.

So, while some people are purchasing rings to go around fingers, others are planting seeds and counting the rings within trees.

The fact these two holidays—one celebrating growth and the other celebrating love -fall within the same week this year could be dismissed as insignificant, or it could inspire us to think about how we can plant the seeds needed to grow a more loving society.

Over the past few months, we have unfortunately seen a number of anti-Semitic attacks, which are actions rooted in

hate. These events make it all the more pressing for us to find ways to replace the weeds of hatred with the beautiful flora of love.

Some non-Jewish neighbors have already left roses at the entrance of some of our local Synagogues. Now like the carob tree planter described in the Talmud, may we also realize that just as others have planted the seeds of love for us, so too must we plant the seeds of love for others.

The Torah tells us in Leviticus 19:18, V’ahavta L’rei’acha Kamocha, meaning “you shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

So in this month celebrating growth and love, let us all dedicate at least one day to planting and nourishing the seeds of neighborly love.

May the acts of kindness we do now help to create a world filled with love and peace for all of our descendants to enjoy.

P2G educators build friendships in Israel

T

hree Richmond educators joined the Partnership2Gether Educators Delegation in Israel the last few weeks of 2019.

Julia Schneider and Ariella Hargrave teach at the Weinstein JCC Preschool and Isaac Skromne is a Biology professor at University of Richmond. They each shared some reflections from their time in Israel while sharing the experience with other educators from the partnership and Israel.

The Jewish Agency’s P2G peoplehood platform has become the paradigm for successfully partnering global Jewish communities directly with Israeli communities. Communities share ideas, strengths, challenges and models of success; and empower one another to generate waves of change.

Our Partnership, for almost 20 years, cultivates close friendships between the Jewish communities in

Charlotte and Greensboro, N.C.; Charleston, S.C.; Chattanooga, Nashville and Knoxville, Tenn.; Flagler and Volusia Counties, Lee & Charlotte Counties, Pinellas County and Jacksonville, Fla., and Richmond and the Hadera- Eiron Region that consists of the City of Hadera, Pardes-Hanna-Karkur, Menashe Regional Council and Alona Local Council in Israel.

We run a variety of programs such as cultural exchanges, teacher exchanges, teen exchanges, leadership programming, and other activities which build relationships between our US Consortium Communities and the Hadera- Eiron Region. The impact of these projects goes far beyond the community level—each of us has the opportunity to become directly and personally involved.

By Ariella Hargrove hen I first heard about this trip I was excited but unsure of what to expect. It turns out that it was more than exciting; it was life changing.

The experience of connecting with other educators in Israel and beyond was something I am not sure I can put into words ... but I will try.

Having the opportunity to explore Israel, visit schools, and other types of educational institutions,and see it through the lens of an educator was invaluable. The people we met on this journey truly transformed this experience into one I will never forget.

The opportunity to connect with individuals with not only different teaching philosophies but different work views and circumstances is something for which I am truly grateful.

I am back from this journey with a deeper sense of responsibility for the lives I am honored to be a part of and this journey we are all on together; as educators.

By Julia Schneider hen I became aware of the opportunity to travel with the Partnership 2Gether, I was told: “it is a unique way to see Israel.”

It wasn’t until I arrived in the Hadera region that I understood just how unique the experience would be. Dining on delicious home-cooked meals full of spice and flavor, staying up late into the night discussing culture and education with my sweet host family, I came to know the country of Israel in an entirely different light.

This was not a tourist experience. This was a journey toward connection and understanding-a catalyst to unify Jewish educators in Israel and the United States.

Our time in Hadera was filled with experiential learning. We engaged in interactive games geared toward STEAM at Ramat Hanadiv, a stunning botanical garden with a vibrant educational center.

We toured schools devoted to science, technology, and the arts; where teenagers were designing apps and delving into entrepeneurship.

We danced and played with kindergartners who tended to a permanent petting zoo on their playground. The love and passion for learning through hands on experiences that these children had was contagious.

We also had the opportunity to tour the Old City in Jerusalem and participate in Hanukkah candle lighting with locals in a nearby neighborhood. Our visit to Yad Veshem, the World Holocaust Center, left an indelible impression on all of us. One that serves as a reminder of our immense responsibility as educators.

On a more personal note, this trip allowed me to stitch a piece of my family back together.

For the first time, I was able to meet my Ukrainan relatives who now live in Israel. Our families were separated when one half stayed in Ukraine, while the others came to the United States. All contact was severed during the Soviet Union and

it wasn’t until the early 1990s that we were able to reconnect by mail.

I was unsure I would ever meet my family in Israel. Through the generosity of the partnership, I was able to meet my family, learn about my ancestors, and strengthen my Jewish identity.

Each experience with Partnership2Gether offered new and profound ways to deepen our connection to the Jewish diaspora. This experience lit a fire in all of us.

I returned to Richmond with new ideas, new connections, and a renewed sense of excitement about my role as a Jewish educator.

I am so grateful for the friendships we made, ones that bond us from across the globe and serve as a reminder of the important work we will continue to do together.

By Isaac Skromne The strength of the week-long Partnership2Gether Educators Program of The Jewish Agency is that it connects American and Israeli educators across all curriculum levels while fostering the exchange of ideas that benefit all parties involved.

As a biology professor at the University of Richmond, I was excited by the prospect of traveling to Israel with this delegation over the winter break because Israel is a land of scientific and pedagogical innovation, but also somewhat wary to participate, because of the of the wide spread in teaching levels. The program emphasizes Kindergarten through 12th grade education.

I definitely benefited from the school visits, talks by Israeli educators, visits to museums and interactions with Israeli students because many learning concepts are universal. The similar tools that can be used to associate concepts at the elementary school level can also be used at the college level to derive common principles, in say, the sciences or the humanities.

The facilitators, regardless of the teaching level, understood that educators face the same challenges in transmitting information to students with clarity and efficacy. www.JewishRichmond.org

We learned about the distinct Israeli-style innovation in pedagogy at a visit to the Zichron Ya’akov Nature Center where we discussed pedagogical tricks that facilitate learning across curriculum that not only enhances student learning but also can make the classroom more Isaac Skromne exciting and inclusive.

One innovative educational approach I learned about during the trip was the use of “escape boxes” to teach STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math).

ORT Israel —the largest educational network in Israel for science and technology—is a big proponent of this pedagogical approach through its iSTEAM program. Escape boxes are smaller versions of the popular escape rooms.

In these games, teams of students play cooperatively and analytically to discover clues, solve puzzles and accomplish tasks towards a specific goal in a limited amount of time.

While in the popular version of the game the goal is to escape the captivity of a room, in the educational version students compete to design and solve science-based puzzles using knowledge and critical thinking skills.

At a high school in Pardes Hana, Richmond’s Sister City, we discussed teaching tools with Israeli teachers. The trip allowed me to build connections with educators that I can now call friends. I also planned a pre-trip meeting with innovative scientists in my field of developmental biology at the Weizmann Institute to connect with high level research.

I am delighted with the trove of information, ideas and connections I made during the program that I am now able to bring back to our community.

I recommend other educators embark on the Partnership2Gether Educators Program of The Jewish Agency to benefit from the breadth of information and flexibility that is applicable to teachers at all levels.

A defining moment for anti-Semitism

hroughout this fall and into the winter, priorities for the organized Jewish community were becoming clear.

Our reality is coming to grips with the increase in violent anti-Semitism over the past two years. The Tree of Life tragedies in Pittsburgh were still fresh in our minds as the recent attack in Monsey, N.Y., took place.

Violent attacks in France in the early part of 2019 scared us as well, but shouldn’t have been a surprise given the 74 percent rise in antiSemitic incidents the French government had been reporting. After Jersey City and Monsey, you could almost hear people’s thoughts - Pittsburgh … again? Of course, Europe … but now in the U.S? This is how our year ended.

One response was a march in New York that called for NO Hate and NO Fear. Yet, those defiant shouts underscored that hate is exactly what there is just too much of today. In Richmond, despite having so many amazing partners throughout the community and feeling like this is a place that is very safe for Jews – we still see the hate and very much feel the fear.

In a pointed article by Bari Weiss, the noted New York Times writer who often writes on antiSemitism, she posed a very adept observation.

Despite the focus of so many in the Jewish community on the rise of anti-Semitism; despite the myriad of organizations dedicated to its study and its eradication; despite all that – did we underestimate how deep and pervasive this oldest of hatreds was in America?

Did our unprecedented freedom and access to the levers of power in this country give us a false sense of security – so much so that we missed what was right in front of us.

locaust Museum organized by the Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities in partnership with the Jewish Community Federation of Richmond and a number of Jewish and non-Jewish organizations.

On a panel made up of diverse community Interfaith leaders, Rabbi Michael Knopf of Temple Beth-El reflected on the Talmudic concept that “God loves difference.”

He noted that over the past number of years, we have seen a cultural trend to attack difference or compel uniformity to one set of national beliefs. Others on the panel agreed and posited if a society begins to see difference or difference of opinion in a negative light or even as “evil,” it should be no wonder that acts of bias and bigotry of a violent nature become more prevalent. In fact it is often anti-Semitism that becomes the harbinger of things to come.

In this context, as our Virginia Jewish Advocacy Day approaches, we should feel it as a genuine call to action to highlight our larger fears and concerns.

As a policy arm of the Federation, the Jewish Community Relations Committee has asked for money to be put in the budget for non-profit institution security. Gov. Ralph Northam has put that money in the budget to the tune of $3 million, and we must make sure our legislators know the reasons why it must stay in the budget.

We are actively pursuing the development of a genuine Holocaust/Anti-Bias curriculum in our schools to attack the roots of bias and bigotry of all kinds and have garnered great support on that front from our community partners and the administration.

We are also in support of Attorney General Mark Herring’s re-introduction of HateCrimes legislation. This year, we need to take this opportunity to let our voice be heard.

he second Richmond Honeymoon Israel cohort is ready to take flight!

The 20 couples accepted for this experience had the opportunity to meet for the first time as a group at the home of Jim Weinberg and Rosann Bocciarelli where they schmoozed and ate an Israeli-inspired dinner with lots of falafel to go around.

The trip to Israel will take place in March, and provide a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Richmond-based couples with at least one Jewish partner to explore Israel and open conversations.

The Jewish Community Federation of Richmond is excited to bring this exciting program to Richmond with support from the local community.

oin Hadassah Richmond for our annual Health Program, Sunday, Feb. 23, 9:30-11:30 a.m. at the Weinstein JCC. Known for bringing provocative and informative health topics to our community, this year’s program presents one of the most talked about subjects to the forefront - CBD (cannabidiol).

While an essential component of medical marijuana, CBD is often used for anxiety, cognition, movement disorders, and pain.

The program will feature speaker Emily Gicewicz, a Bremo Pharmacy resident. Bring along your spouses and friends and learn the ABC’s of CBD with Richmond Hadassah!

Beth Sholom Senior Living Nursing Scholarship Award B eth Sholom Senior Living has announced the winner of the Ada & Abe Pfeffer Nursing Scholarship.

This scholarship fund was established to provide support and to assist in staff development and continuing education of the employees of the Beth Sholom Healthcare Center.

We are pleased to announce the 2019 recipient is Alecia Carthy. She is a full time licensed practical nurse and has been employed at Beth Sholom since December 2017.

She began her nursing career as a certified nursing assistant, then a registered medication aide, licensed practical nurse and is now in pursuit of becoming a registered nurse.

When asked about her career path, Alecia stated, “Because of the tremendous passion I have for working in long-term care, I pursued my goal of being a licensed practical nurse.”

She continued, “I am motivated daily by the smile on the faces of my patients, the sense of fulfillment I receive every day, knowing that

I am making a difference in their lives and the recognition I receive from family members, peers, and leadership alike”.

“Alecia does an excellent job caring for the residents in our memory care unit,”said Tommy Conrad, administrator of Beth Sholom Healthcare Center. “Whether she was mentoring new hires, taking care of patients, or completing documentation, Alecia has proved to be a true asset to Beth Sholom.”

Coding, Spanish, chess & more activities at RTA R

TA’s fall session of after-school programs broke all previous year’s records – with close to 70 participants signed up!

Fall activities included soccer, art enrichment, chess, and computer coding.

This winter the school is adding two courses in conversational Spanish. Students will be able to understand, ask and answer questions and express themselves in full basic Spanish sentences.

‘Lights of Love’ brightens holidays for 50 people T

he holidays can be a difficult time of year, especially for our neighbors who are elderly or isolated.

In December, JFS launched a new program – “Lights of Love” – to help brighten the season for those whose holidays might be lonely or cold.

JFS staff collected wish lists from clients across the agency in need of a little extra holiday warmth and light. Paper ‘flames’ with the wish lists hung from the “Lights of Love” display in the Weinstein JCC for people to read, take and shop for, perhaps while picking up Hanukkah gifts for their own friends and families.

Many clients wanted essential things like winter clothes, personal care items and grocery store gift cards.

While we hoped the first year of “Lights of Love” would be a success, JFS staff was floored by the extraordinary response – every single flame was picked and returned!

Thanks to so many generous, compassionate community members, 50 people of all ages received gifts, visits and a small reminder that they weren’t alone during the holidays.

But, before the gifts could be delivered, they needed to be wrapped!

JFS staff, volunteers and even a client’s family member who happened to be in the office pitched in for a “wrapping party” in the JFS conference room.

With a roaring fireplace video on the television, the small team spent an afternoon wrapping presents and marveling at the donors’ generosity.

gifts from the “Lights of Love” donors, but also their own gift of a visit, taking time with their clients to have a cup of coffee or a chat at the kitchen table.

Teresa Baldwin, JFS director of Human Resources and Volunteer Services, and the spark behind “Lights of Love,” spent her Christmas day off delivering the last few gifts with her daughter, Abbie.

As they went from home-to-home, almost everyone they visited was alone and just as excited by the company as the gifts.

One elderly client had just moved into a new apartment, and her wish list included dishes and a floor mat. When she opened her door to see Teresa and Abbie struggling to carry three giant bags of home goods to get her settled in, she burst into tears.

As Teresa and Abbie left to make their next delivery, she said, “Thank you for thinking of me today.”

Teresa remembered, “We decided to deliver gifts to one particular lady last, since I knew it would be a long visit.

She’s not as mobile as she used to be, so she gets lonely. We stayed for more than an hour and had a lovely time!”

JFS is profoundly grateful for everyone who participated in the first “Lights of Love,” whether you bought gifts for a neighbor in need, gave your time to wrap or spread the word about the program. You brought warmth and joy to 50 people who might otherwise have felt forgotten during the holidays.

We are especially thankful to the Weinstein JCC for hosting the display.

Jewish Family Theatre presents ‘Torch Song’ T

he Weinstein JCC’s Jewish Family Theatre will present “Torch Song” as part of the Richmond theatre community’s Acts of Faith Festival this year.

Directed by Debra Clinton, “Torch Song” is the two-act revival of Harvey Fierstein’s Torch Song Trilogy that won the 1983 Tony Award for Best Play.

Opening Wednesday, March 18 and running through Wednesday, March 25, JFT will present this ground-breaking play that depicts the life of Arnold Beckoff, a torch song-singing, Jewish drag queen living in New York City.

Told with a likable, human voice, “Torch Song” follows Arnold’s odyssey to find happiness in New York over the span of the late 1970s and 1980s. All he wants is a husband, a child, and a pair of bunny slippers that fit, but a visit from his overbearing mother reminds him that he needs one thing more: respect. Arnold takes the audience on an all-too human journey about the families we’re born into, the families we choose, and the battles to bring them all home.

Acts of Faith is an inclusive theatre festival where Richmond-area professional theatres offer a show from January through April that deals with some aspect of faith.

Talkbacks are a key component and put the audience and storytellers in conversation, delving deeper into the play’s themes. Rabbi Ahuva Zaches, Congregation Or Ami, will lead the talkback following the Sunday, March 22, performance of “Torch Song.”

.Granfriends: Cultivating special intergenerational Weinstein JCC Happenings

By Rachel Peters, Preschool Teacher and Granfriend Coordinator he Weinstein JCC serves as a much-needed space for people to gather. The programming brings people together to form community. Many communities call this building home.

Walking through the hallways, one might see seniors playing bridge in the gallery, preschoolers heading to the gym, people heading to work-out, and someone taking time to read a book in the lobby with the smell of Matzo ball soup being eaten by patrons in the cafe.

All people are united by common interests finding peace in togetherness. I am proud to work in a place that encourages vibrant communities and becomes a second home.

In the true fashion of our community, Shari Menlowe-Barck, Weinstein JCC Adult Programming director and I noticed an opportunity to bring our two communities together through a program called “Granfriend.”

A proud six months into the partnership, we have connected 9 seniors with 9 classrooms. The Granfriends are thrilled to come see their classes, and the children love their Granfriends. It has been such a success that we actually have a waiting list for next year!

One classroom teacher, Sharon Johnson, has stated that, “For the kids it has been really exciting, as they look forward to Robert, their Granfriend, coming each month. The children have exhibited their natural sense of empathy in preparing for his arrival in the room. They also understand the generational piece; knowing he is older and how to talk and treat him with respect.”

Robert is, in turn, enriched by this experience stating that he “Now has 18 grandchildren and 2 more daughters!”

This has been a lovely start to a new collaboration that builds relationships and bridges communities at the Weinstein JCC. We look forward to watching how continued intergenerational relationships will add rich moments of Hitorerut

One Note performs at Or Ami New Year’s Eve event. Or Ami Photos

Or Ami happenings in February N ew Year’s Eve at Or Ami was an especially nice way to bring in 2020. We ate, danced to a terrific band called One Note, bid on silent auction items, kibitzed, and ate some more.

If you missed this wonderful time, please think of us next year.

On Friday, Feb. 7, our third, fourth, and fifth graders will be leading a special musicalthemed Shabbat service for Shabbat Shirah the Shabbat when we read the Torah portion containing Moses and Miriam’s famous song after crossing the Sea of Reeds.

It’s a wonderful service for people of all ages, and especially families with children who would like to see future generations practice their leadership skills in a warm and supportive Jewish setting.

On Feb. 28, we will have a special Shabbat Service for Black History Month featuring a guest speaker Jenné Nurse. She is the equity coordinator at the Virginia Department of Education and will be speaking about the impact of race and racism on educational systems both in American and South Africa.

She grew up in Henrico and spent time in South Africa on a scholarship.

Sarah’s Tent is scheduled for Feb. 15 from 11a.m. until 12:30 p.m. This family- friendly event is free and open to members and nonmembers of Or Ami. We will have fun activities and community lunch (Tu Bishvat Craft Shabbat) On Jan. 25, Or Ami’s Education Committee hosted our Community Game Night! We served a pizza dinner and dessert.

It may be too late to join our teens this year on our ski trip, which is on Jan. 31 – Feb. 1, which has been an annual tradition for about 20 years.

Temple Beth El in Harrisonburg hosts teens from all over Virginia to come together to celebrate their Judaism and youth together.

Maybe next year your teen will want to participate as well.

It’s not too late, however, to join our teens at OATY’s Trivia Game Night and Dinner, which is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 22.

Humans have always depended on trees to provide a variety of resources: oxygen, firewood, shelter, tools, and much more. In many parts of the world, trees are being removed at a faster rate than they can grow.

With Tu Bishvat just around the corner, the Kornblau Religious School has been exploring the importance of trees, observing how they support humans, provide for animals, and help the environment thrive. To celebrate the birthday of the trees, students are participating in Tikkun Olam; making the world a better place, one tree at a time.

Tikkun Olam is the Jewish responsibility to repair the world, taking care of the earth and its creatures. In the school’s growing garden, students are experiencing firsthand how to take care of nature’s plants, nurturing seedlings so they may blossom.

Adding color and life to the schoolyard, students have enjoyed the garden, watching it grow and change across the seasons.

In honor of Tu Bishvat, students are preparing to plant two new apple trees to mark the entrance of the school garden, welcoming visitors to take a break and step into the garden to enjoy a peaceful moment surrounded by nature.

While the trees will be planted during the warmer spring season, students are decorating large planters that will soon house the apple trees come spring, adding their own personalized touch to the garden.

representing Israel and the four seasons. Paired with each fruit, students will enjoy a scoop of ice cream and explore the seasons through flavor.

During the Seder, students will embark on a meditative journey through the year to reflect on the significance of trees and the environment.

Students will hear the story of Honi and the Carob Tree, and the Seder will conclude with a tree-themed song circle.

In preparation for the holiday, students are working together to speak for the trees. Drawing inspiration from Dr. Seuss’ “The Lorax,” students are assuming the role of the Lorax as a tree caregiver to educate the community on the importance of trees.

Creating their own sequel to the story, students explore the responsibility and duty behind the Once-ler’s “UNLESS” to brainstorm the actions needed to ensure that trees will continue to be a thriving part of the ecosystem in the future.

The Kornblau Religious School is always open to interested families who are looking to start, continue or explore their own Jewish Journey.

In class, students discover new ways to interact with Jewish holidays and traditions, Israeli culture, Hebrew and Tefillah, and the weekly Parsha.

Or Atid Happenings Tu Bish’vat Celebration Feb. 9 n Sunday, Feb. 9 at 7:30 p.m., Congregation Or Atid will celebrate Tu Bish’vat, the Jewish festival of nature and the produce of the land of Israel.

Through the mystical Seder and symbolic journey of eating different kinds of fruits, drinking multi-colored cups of grape juice, discussion, and singing, we will experience this ancient-modern Jewish festival of nature with great joy!

Social Action and Justice Activities On Christmas morning, 15 volunteers from Congregation Or Atid served a special holiday breakfast at Shepherd’s Way Relief Center in downtown Richmond to help those in need.

This Mitzvah project was sponsored by Or Atid’s Social Action and Justice Committee.

NCSY event creates lasting memories My name is Marissa Marczak and I’m a junior at Patrick Henry High School in Ashland. Over the summer of 2019, I moved across the United States from Idaho to Virginia. Constantly learning and exploring what Virginia has to offer, I have throughly enjoyed immersing myself in the Jewish community, specifically at NCSY events and Friendship Circle Birthday Circles where I serve as treasurer of the Teen Leadership Board.

It was 25 hours filled with laughter, music, knowing smiles and intellectual conversations. The memories created during that time enforced my belief in the deep connections we share as Jews.

I felt an immediate sense of safety and security, as I was welcomed into the house of Arielle Sherman, NCSY/JSU Richmond City Director.

My knowledge of Judaism increased, but most of all, I discovered a community where I could be myself.

I consider one of the highlights of this Shabbaton to be our two-hour singing session on Friday night and the Havdalah service at the end. Music is the most powerful

icebreaker and is a medicine that unites communities.

I am thankful that I was able to share this experience with such an uplifting group of girls.

After our music session, the giggling fits began, which boosted my mood for the month. In society today, our generation has a “work, work, work” mindset, which many adolescents get caught up in. However, Shabbat serves to remind us of the importance of friendship, laughter, and happiness which was evident on the Shabbat weekend. I went home that day filled with ambition and inspiration, and incredibly grateful to have met a wonderful group of girls.

One of those girls was Claudia Sachs. She passionately stated, “The Shabbaton was a wonderful opportunity to connect with a diverse group of teens, explore my Jewish identity, and discover new traditions. Everything was organized and well-run, and I felt welcome and included from the moment I walked in the door.”

The Shabbaton was one we will forever cherish in our hearts.

About JSU The mission of Jewish Student Union (JSU) is to get Jewish teens attending public high schools to strengthen their Jewish identity and connection to Israel.

JSU facilitates regular club meetings in public schools that meet during the lunch hour, before or after school, providing food for the body and soul. Programs include speakers from a variety of Jewish organizations, discussions on timely topics of interest to the participants and interactive activities. Kosher pizza, Krispy Kreme doughnuts, Starbucks, holiday foods or other snacks are always served.

In addition to the regularly scheduled school club meetings, JSU sponsors activities outside of school including retreats, citywide holiday parties, community service projects, ski trips, Friday night dinners, and other exciting events.

Camp Ganim is the Weinstein JCC’s day camp for preschoolers, ages 2-5.

Camp Ganim offers educational and safe opportunities for children to interact with nature. They run, climb, dig, collect, pretend, take risks and create, while exploring sand, mud, flowers, insects and more!

Nurturing and caring staff members supervise Ganim campers as they participate in swimming, art, water play, music and gardening in the JCC’s state-licensed facility. Camp Ganim has sessions beginning on June 1 through Sept. 4, and childcare options before and after camp hours.

Camp Hilbert has been the home of happy campers for the past 70+ years.

Nestled in the heart of Goochland County, Hilbert’s beautiful 110-acre site is the ideal camp setting for exploring the outdoors, building and developing skills, and forging lifelong friendships.

Campers in grades K-10 enjoy a wide range of activities from boating on serene Lake Rosalie, to team building on the lowropes course, and playing a Camp Hilbert favorite: ga-ga.

FOR KIDS OF ALL AGES AND SIZES RCJE’s Camp Sababa returns for 11th year F or the 11th summer, join campers for another fun-filled week at Camp Sababa.

The week-long program is designed and run by the Richmond Council for Jewish Education, a committee of the Jewish Community Federation of Richmond. The group consists of educators from all the local Synagogues and agencies who gather together to put on this amazing one-of-a kind camp each summer.

During the session, campers explore their Jewish heritage and Hebrew through different themes.

The camp is for all rising Kindergarten-6th grade Jewish students.

Also, there is a Counselor in Training Program for rising 7th & 8th grade Jewish students.

Past themes include Israeli Cities, Jewish Time Travel, Our Families, Around the World and much more. Campers have time for arts and crafts, games, cooking and meeting friends from different congregations and all over the Richmond community.

A highlight of the week is when the campers are joined by Israeli teens visiting Richmond as part of the Partnership2Gether Tikkun Olam Exchange program.

This summer, the camp will run from Aug. 10-14 and will be held at Congregation Or Ami. The early bird cost is $125 with a Registration Deadline of April 1.

After that date it is $150 for all 5 days. The final Registration Deadline is July 15. It will be $40 for the CIT Program.

Brand Director of Youth Learning “Find Yourself a Teacher and Get Yourself a Friend” n Sunday, Jan. 5, our teachers attended a Professional Development Workshop sponsored by the Richmond Council for Jewish Education, to spend the morning learning and re-energizing for the new semester.

It was a engaging morning as we learned together with other teachers from our local religious schools and were inspired by our guest speaker, Rabbi JoHanna Potts, educator from the Jewish Studio in Washington,D.C. Part of the morning was spent in reflective practice, part in inspiration and learning, part in friendship and appreciation. Our Religious School educators are the backbone of our sacred tradition in ‘teaching our children diligently’. “Find yourself a teacher and get yourself a friend,” said Joshua Ben Perachyah in Perkei Avot.

Our teachers work quite diligently to provide engaging, creative, challenging and supportive education to our students. Their care and dedication to our students is apparent every Sunday and Wednesday!

Our school is filled with smiles, laughter, hard-work and proud accomplishments thanks to the efforts of our remarkable teaching staff. Our students can look forward to a new semester of important Jewish learning, thanks to their good friends, their teachers.

By Pam Feibish huck Greenberg is happy that Beth Ahabah’s over 30-year support of CARITAS as an intake site is over.

Happy not that it has been a hardship, but that we are no longer needed.

Since CARITAS’s beginning in 1987, Beth Ahabah would welcome between 40 and 80 homeless individuals every day for between seven and 10 weeks each winter with a warm building, snacks, hospitality and conversation.

They would be at Beth Ahabah for over an hour until they were bused to an area congregation to spend the night. The homeless would spend one week at a congregation and then be taken to a different one every week.

In a few months, CARITAS will have a new campus that will provide housing onsite, bringing stability to the housing situation of the homeless population.

When this occurs area congregations will no longer be needed for housing.

Chuck has been associated with CARITAS for over 30 years. In the mid‘80s state and local governments greatly reduced funding for mental illness and housing needed by many.Inexpensive downtown motels closed, and many people became homeless. A program called Winter Cots was started to provide a place to sleep and under the leadership of Drs. Hans (obm) and Renate Falck, Beth Ahabah started to house people overnight.

In 1987, the year Chuck became Brotherhood president, CARITAS was formed to provide not only a place to sleep but to help the homeless become productive citizens by providing job training and mental health assistance. Since the late ‘80s, Brotherhood has provided the snack and hot beverages served at Beth Ahabah.

In the early years Charles Gold was in charge of getting congregant volunteers (two each night) and Harold Bernstein (obm) would obtain the food/ snacks. In the mid-90s Chuck became CARITAS coordinator and has held that job since. He oversaw CARITAS onsite staff, Beth Ahabah staff and congregant volunteers as well as purchased all snacks and arranged for two congregant volunteers each night.

“CARITAS has been a most fulfilling experience,” says Chuck. “Beth Ahabah and its many congregant volunteers have made a real contribution to the City of Richmond and the well-being of many individuals – we should be proud of ourselves. On each of the 1,600 days we have hosted CARITAS, about 50 individuals have found warmth and compassion”.

Chuck and his family joined Beth Ahabah in 1985 and have been active members ever since. Volunteering is a vital part of his life. He has been an active member of his Lions Club for over 40 years. He is happy that the volunteer bug has been caught by his daughter, Sarah Jane. She started helping collect money for Lions White Cane days at the age of 3. For years she volunteered at Beth Sholom Home, is in the choir and has taught in the religious school for over 10 years; her son, Daniel, is a teacher’s aide. Chuck says with pride that “volunteering is the gift that gives.”

“I am thankful that I have been associated with this wonderful program.

Many of the adults from Beth Ahabah that have volunteered with their schoolage children have told me that they and their children have been given a new perspective on their lives and that of their community.”

BBYO & Jewish community host two teens from Ukraine

By Ryan Woloshin BBYO Regional Director Eastern Region BYO Richmond in December continued its partnership with Active Jewish Teens from Zaporozhye, Ukraine, by hosting two of their top teen leaders and a staff member for a week of touring, learning and fun in the United States.

For the third consecutive year, this exchange has been one of the highlights of the BBYO winter calendar.

Teens from Active Jewish Teens, BBYO’s sister movement in the Former Soviet Union, have participated in national BBYO programs such as International Convention and Summer Programs. The program in Richmond is the pilot program for these kinds of community trips.

This year, we were excited to host a set of twin girls, Alika and Karina Boiko and their staff member, Ulyana Malafeeva.

During their time in the U.S., the group had a blend of touring and participating in BBYO programs. Some highlights were participation in a Global Shabbat with Ricmond teens, touring the local Synagogues and agencies, a trip to Washington, D.C., led by Sara Rosenbaum of the JCFR and participation in BBYO Eastern Region’s Regional Convention in Charlotte.

Regional Convention offered an opportunity for the three to interact with 200 Jewish teens from not only Richmond but from all over Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Southeastern Georgia.

Saturday. Conversations in both Russian and English could be heard throughout the weekend as our Russian-speaking teens made our guests feel at home.

The teens and their advisor also made a presentation at the Federation board meeting and answered questions from the community leaders.

This partnership over the last four years has yielded plenty of successes but this year’s success was the feeling that our Ukrainian guests were truly part of our community.

Early in the planning process for this year, teens and families asked if Ukrainian teens were indeed returning to the region this year. The Ukrainian and American teens interact as you would expect any normal set of teens. There is sharing of hobbies and traditions, something highlighted by celebrating Hanukkah together before the end of the trip.

Our communities have forged a special bond that has been highlighted by this exchange and BBYO is grateful to the support of the Jewish Community Federation of Richmond for making this possible.

VCIC hosts ‘Standing Together to Combat Anti-Semitism’ A pproximately 125 people attended a community forum, “Standing Together to Combat Anti-Semitism,” on Jan. 12 at the Virginia Holocaust Museum.

Hosted by the Standing Together Steering Committee of the Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities, the program featured remarks, an interfaith panel, a musical selection and community dialogues.

The Standing Together Steering Committee of the VCIC convened the event in partnership with ADL, Washington, D.C., Congregation Or Ami, Islamic Center of Virginia, Jewish Community Federation of Richmond, Keneseth Beth Israel, Side

by Side, Sisterhood of Salaam Shalom, Temple Beth-El, Unitarian Universalist Community Church, The Valentine First Freedom Center, Virginia Holocaust Museum, Virginia Interfaith Center for Public Policy, and YWCA Richmond The program included greetings from Samuel Asher, executive director of VHM; a statement from Rabbi Ahuva Zaches (who could not attend due to a funeral) read by community leader Miriam Davidow, an interfaith panel moderated by Rabbi Michael Knopf of Temple Beth-El with panelists Suja Amir, Rev. In his greeting from VHM, Asher noted, “We stood together with over 2,000 people at the Weinstein JCC in October 2018, with people of all races and all religions. We worked together to send a message after the killing of 11 people at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh Since then, the Poway Chabad, and many incidents in New York have taken place.”

He continued, “But we must do more than react to atrocities. We must be proactive and try to mend the tear in the fabric of our society. We must continue to have programs that bring us together.”

Jonathan Zur, president and CEO of VCIC, delivered closing remarks.

He noted the gathering was a result of “significant partnerships and relationships that have been forged over many years.”

Zur noted, “It was four years ago this very weekend when over 600 people came together at Congregation Beth Ahabah ... to stand together with the Muslim community in response to a proposed ban on Muslims coming to the United States.”

He said it was the catalyst for the formation of the community Standing Together Steering Committee.

By Rabbi Ahuva Zaches I remember the year I was deemed old enough to hear our Synagogue’s guest speaker for Holocaust Remembrance Day. I was 12, and adults were still trying to figure out the age at which it might be appropriate to explain why so many of the sweet grandparents at our synagogue had numbers tattooed on their arms.

Each year, there would be a different speaker sharing their personal story of how they survived the Holocaust.

As teenagers, my classmates and I were always riveted by their stories, which emphasized their determination to live, their cleverness, and their comparatively good luck.

Most people did not survive the camps.

I remember talking with my classmates about what we would have done if we had lived in Europe during WWII. My Hebrew School teacher told us we www.JewishRichmond.org

were lucky because as Americans living at the beginning of a new millennium, we did not have to worry about being killed simply for being Jewish.

Sure, there was the occasional graffiti on Jewish institutions. But we knew what to do. When someone spray-painted a swastika on the wall of a Synagogue or Jewish Community Center, we would call the police and simply paint over it.

We might have been a little shaken by that symbol of hatred, but we weren’t living in fear for our lives.

Today is different. The children going to Hebrew School now have parents wondering if bringing their kids to a synagogue is putting their lives at risk. People of all ages have been worrying about this since October 27, 2018, when eleven Jews were murdered while praying in their synagogue in Pittsburgh. We desperately wanted to believe that attack was a fluke, something horrific that would not happen again. But six months later on April 27, 2019, there was another fatal shooting as Jews celebrat-

ed Passover at a synagogue in Poway, California. Then last month, more Jews were killed while simply trying to buy food at a kosher grocery store in Jersey City. And two weeks ago, more Jews were critically stabbed next to a synagogue, while celebrating Chanukah at their rabbi’s house in Monsey, New York.

I’m starting to think that my old Hebrew School teacher was wrong. As a child, I was led to believe that America is the “land of the free,” a country where people would not be persecuted on account of their religion or ethnic background. But now as an adult, I have to lead a community that lives in fear of the next attack.

And frankly, it’s exhausting. How many times can you organize a vigil? How many times can you utter the same prayer for the violence to stop before it starts to feels like a prayer made in vain?

I am so tired of this cycle of hate. As a Rabbi, I have spent too many hours discussing new security measures, when that time should have been spent working on

blessings for weddings or baby namings.

It’s time for our community to take action against anti-Semitism and all other forms of hate.

To paraphrase the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., I pray that we can finally realize that our lives are inextricably bound together. We need to build stronger relationships with one another across religious and racial boundaries. We need to hear each other’s stories and to empathize with one another’s pain. We need to overcome the distance between our communities and learn to see everyone as a full human being rather than an abstract stereotype.

Only then can we build a love in our community that is stronger than any kind of hate.

May we work together, not only today, but also in the many days to come, to replace the hate and brokenness of this world with love and understanding.

And let us say: Amen.

RCJE holds professional development workshop O n Sunday, Jan. 5, the Richmond Coalition for Jewish Education hosted over 40 Richmond Jewish educators gathered at the Virginia Holocaust Museum for an annual Teacher Appreciation and Professional Development Workshop.

The group had an opportunity to work with Rabbi JoHanna Potts, the education director of The Jewish Studio and the founder of Advancing Wisdom and Education.

She served as director of education at Temples Solel and Shalom, director of The Primary School at Washington Hebrew Congregation, and director of the Middle School at Gesher Jewish Day School in the Washington, D.C., area.

While at the Partnership for Jewish Life and Learning, she designed and led a community education change initiative. Prior to moving to the Washington, DC area, Rabbi Potts worked in university administration and student development.

She teaches adults across the D.C. metro area at JCCs and multiple congregations. Her current areas of focus

involve strengthening organizations and families, engaging others in enJOYable Jewish learning and empowering individuals to create lives of meaning through Judaism.

Each educator in attendance received a small token of appreciation for their continued service to the community.

RCJE, an ad-hoc committee of the Jewish Community Federation of Richmond, is made up of educators from Synagogues and other area organizations, including RTA, the Virginia Holocaust Museum and the Weinstein JCC. Thank you to the Fetter-Goldsmith Jewish Education Fund of Richmond Jewish Foundation for their sponsorship of this program and dedication to recognizing the work our Jewish educators are doing to help build a vibrant Jewish community.

Hillel at Virginia Tech announces new chairman, board members T

he mission of Hillel at Virginia Tech Board of Directors is to provide resources to enrich the lives of Jewish students so that they may enrich the Jewish people and the world.

We are excited to welcome our new board directors who will help us accomplish our goals.

Several have Richmond and Tidewater connections.

Rochelle Friedman is a program manager for The Boeing Company. As Hillel board chair, she will lead the board of directors in their support of the Hillel at Virginia Tech’s long-term strategic vision of a self-sustaining organization which creates a home away from home for Jewish students at Virginia Tech.

Friedman graduated from Virginia Tech Rochelle Friedman in 2009 with a degree in Accounting and received her MBA from University of Maryland in 2012.

As a VT undergrad, Friedman was two-time chair of the student board and was the founder of the Jewish Student Union.

Ben Chinsky is a career Army officer who is excited to join the board as it looks to expand student engagement with alumni and the board of directors. He graduated from Virginia Tech in 2008 with a degree in History and as a member of the Corps of Cadets.

Recently, he completed a graduate degree in Global Security Studies at Johns Hopkins University. During his years at VT, Chinsky served the Hillel community in a variety of leadership roles.

Laura Disney is a licensed clinical social worker in Fayetteville, N.C. She will be responsible for board operations with a focus on improving record keeping to ensure the longevity of the Board of Directors.

Disney graduated from Virginia Tech in 2013 with a degree in Dairy Science, after which she obtained her master’s degree in Social Work.

During her time in undergrad, she held a plethora of Hillel leadership roles and helped to plan events such as FreshFest and Holocaust Remembrance Day. Laura met her husband, Jordan, at the Malcolm Rosenberg Hillel Center groundbreaking! They are currently raising an assistance dog in training through Canine Companions for Independence.

Rachel Oppenheim is a digital marketer for Altria. As a board director, she will be responsible for both rebranding the board and for leading a pilot program to increase alumni engagement.

Israel Travel Scholarships for teens and college students R ecognizing the importance of an Israel experience, the Jewish Community Federation of Richmond has limited funds available for Israel programs sponsored by nationally recognized Jewish organizations.

Available subsidies will be divided among the participants; the amount to be awarded will depend upon the number of applications received.

Requirements for funding through the Federation are as follows: • Eligible recipients are those who had completed their sophomore year of high school by June 2020 through undergraduate college students up to age 21.

• The subsidies will be available for any student’s tour of Israel sponsored by a nationally recognized Jewish organization.

• Selection of participants will be based upon the following: 1. All applications must be received no later than March 31, 2020 2. Those individuals who have not received a prior Federation grant will receive top priority, as will those who have never visited Israel.

3. Applications must adhere to the requirements established by the national sponsoring organizations • The subsidy will be granted to eligible students without regard of other funds made available to them, financial circumstance of parents, or past achievements.

Violins of Hope Spring 2020

V

irginia Holocaust Museum and Virginia Museum of History and Culture will partner to bring violins played by Jews during the Holocaust to Richmond in May. Amnon Weinstein began curating his collection just over two decades ago, which debuted in North America in 2012. The museums will tell the stories of the violins while on display in interactive exhibits and in live concerts played by Richmond Symphony and other local musicians across various venues in Richmond.

‘Beyond Duty’ exhibit extended at VHM

W

hile the countries of the free world were reluctant to help Jewish refugees, and while most diplomats continued to employ standard procedures, only very few felt that extraordinary times required extraordinary action and were willing to act against their governments’ policy.

Only a small minority mustered the necessary courage to recognize the significance and consequences of obeying their superiors’ instructions.

When faced with the plight of the Jews, they decided that although they were of a different nationality and religion, they were unable to continue with their professional routine, and hence chose to defy their superiors and, if necessary, suffer the consequences.

The core of the “Beyond Duty” exhibition is comprised of the stories of nine diplomats who were recognized as “Righteous Among the Nations.”

Their stories represent diversity – different countries of origin, various countries where they operated different types of rescue actions taken in various stages of the Holocaust.

The stories are woven into the historical chain of events of the Holocaust, along with more specific historical background relevant to each of the nine stories.

The “Beyond Duty” is a free exhibit.

The Virginia Holocaust Museum is located at 2000 East Cary St., Richmond. he Rohr Jewish Learning Institute (JLI) is the world’s preeminent provider of Jewish learning. JLI’s mission is to make Jewish learning accessible and personally meaningful to every Jew, regardless of background or affiliation.

We are grateful to have Rabbi Shlomo Periera continue to lead us is another fascinating JLI course titled. “Judaism’s Gifts to the World.”

Once considered preposterous, many of Judaism’s revolutionary teachings are today’s universal values that are taken for granted. An analysis of Jewish contributions past and present allows us to define ways in which Judaism can continue serving as a beacon of light and wisdom for all humanity.

As always our JLI courses are open to the whole community - Jewish or otherwise. No previous knowledge is required.

The SECURE ACT: What you need to know

he “Setting Every Community Up for Retirement Enhancement” Act, aka the SECURE Act, was among several bills attached recently to a “must-pass” appropriations bill that was signed into law on December 20, 2019.

The SECURE Act includes many changes to the rules governing retirement plans. These changes became effective on Jan. 1, 2020.

A recent study showed that retirement benefits ranked second in importance (after health care) among all the benefits that employers offer.

The SECURE Act governs the rules for how we save for retirement and what we may do with the retirement funds. The SECURE Act is meant to be an incentive, helping Americans improve their retirement savings by creating more flexible rules for savings and use of funds.

What is the purpose of the SECURE Act, in a nutshell?

Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCD) or popularly called the Charitable IRA Rollover, continue to require a minimum age of 70½. The Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) has gone up, though, to age 72. An RMD is the amount you must withdraw from your retirement accounts each year. This could be good for small business, as it may motivate some older employees to retire later — it is expensive to replace older, more experienced employees.

This increase gives taxpayers another 1½ years to defer withdrawals. This means you can potentially let your retirement funds grow an extra 1½ years before tapping into them.

That can mean a significant boost to overall retirement savings for many seniors. Under the SECURE Act non-spousal beneficiaries of inherited IRAs will need to withdraw that money within 10 years.

As a reminder, RMD rules apply to tax-deferred retirement accounts, such as: • Traditional IRAs • Rollover IRAs • SIMPLE IRAs • SEP IRAs • Most small-business accounts • Most 401(k) and 403(b) plans What are the general benefits of the SECURE Act? • You can contribute to a traditional IRA for as long as you live and work. Previously, the contribution cutoff was set to 70½. SECURE removes this restriction because Americans are working and living longer. (Note: Roth IRAs never had an age/contribution restriction.)

401(k) plans now, because the Act lowers the number of hours — from 1,000 to 500 — part-timers are required to work before qualifying for a 401(k). The employee must also have worked three years in a row.

• The contribution cap for auto-enrollment 401(k) plans and Simple IRAs jumps from 10 to 15%. If your employer-sponsored plan provides auto-enrollment, the amount withheld for your savings can increase each year (unless you opt-out), until it reaches 15% of your pay.

• Tax credits for small businesses. The new law also offers opportunities for tax credits for the start-up costs related to establishing an employer plan. There are also increased credits available for employers who require their workers to automatically enroll in their company’s retirement plans. This incentivizes small businesses to be more aggressive in hiring and retaining good employees.

• More benefits under 529 Plans. These

plans enable a tax-incentivized way for employees and their employers to put money away for their children’s (and other relatives) future higher-education expenses.

The new Act is complex so now is a good time for a thorough tax review by an expert. In some cases, it might make sense to leave an IRA to charity and purchase life insurance for your children; or open a charitable remainder trust to maximize legacy benefits.

Retirement plans are normally taxed at a much higher rate. So leaving lesstaxed assets to heirs is much more favorable since there’s zero-tax if donated to charity. You can explore these many options with your trusted advisor.
