CHRISTMAS GETAWAYS that are worth a visit

Silver Dollar City, An Old Time Christmas in Fireman’s Landing

Get wrapped up in the Christmas spirit this year by visiting one of these holiday destinations.

AN OZARK MOUNTAIN CHRISTMAS IN BRANSON, MISSOURI You’re not going to find a more Christmassy place on the planet than Branson, Missouri. The citizens go all-out as they transform their Ozark Mountain town into a winter wonderland. Let’s start with the place that boasts the highest concentration of lights in Branson. The internationally award-

winning theme park Silver Dollar City hosts An Old Time Christmas from through Dec. 30. During this incredibly festive time of year, the park features more than 6.5 million lights, an eight-story animated tree, Broadwaystyle live holiday productions, a light parade, plenty of holiday foods and lots of rides. With more than 1,500 Christmas trees, Branson’s Christmas Tree Trail

Shop Local Christmas getaways is truly spectacular. New this year, the most unique landmark Christmas tree displays in the destination – including a new community tree themed “Ever Green and Ever Glowing” – will be part of a GPS-based treasure hunt app for visitors. Located in the heart of Branson’s Entertainment District, the Branson Wheel is a giant Ferris wheel that’s electrified with 16,000 LED fixtures holding more than 144,000 individual lights that all “dance” to classic Christmas tunes. The light show takes place every hour on the hour once night falls. There are also museums in the Entertainment District that are perfect for exploring at this time of year. If you ever wished for a toy under the tree but didn’t get it, you’ll probably find it at World’s Largest Toy Museum, a repository of more than a million dolls, trains, teddy bears, action figures and collectibles. Branson is also known as a live music show capital, and in December, dozens of shows get into the holiday spirit by adding themed song-and-dance numbers to their repertoire or creating dedicated Christmas shows. Please note: Silver Dollar City’s An Old Time Christmas is closed on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Check the online calendar for the full operating schedule.

DOLLYWOOD IN PIGEON FORGE, TENNESSEE Dolly Parton’s theme park ushers in the spirit of the season during Dollywood’s Smoky Mountain Christmas, which starts in November and runs through Jan. 6.

Dollywood’s Smoky Mountain Christmas, presented by Humana in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee by Curtis Hilburn/Dollywood

Did you know? Nearly 113 million Americans will travel more than 50 miles to gather with friends and family this holiday season.

This year’s event is brighter and more brilliant than ever. In addition to the starlit mountain skies, more than 6 million twinkling lights are strewn throughout the 160-acre park, which is nestled in the heart of the Great Smoky Mountains. A unique way to see all those lights is during a tour aboard the Dollywood Express, a classic train that plays Christmas tunes. Heartwarming seasonal shows, a chance to find out if you’re on Santa’s “naughty or nice” list, Christmas shopping, and more await visitors during this festive time of year. For a warm and welcoming Christmas stay, in addition to onsite lodging at Dollywood’s DreamMore Resort and Spa, this year overnight guests can also book a room at the brand-new HeartSong Lodge & Resort, which is hosting its grand opening in conjunction with the start of Smoky Mountain Christmas. Please note: Dollywood’s Smoky Mountain Christmas is closed on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Check the online calendar for the full operating schedule. Christmas getaways Located in the heart of Branson’s Entertainment District, the Branson Wheel is electrified with more than 144,000 individual lights that all “dance” to classic Christmas tunes by Explore Branson.

BOWLING GREEN, KENTUCKY Bowling Green is home to unique holiday shopping and experiences, including one we’re really excited about (as if the picture above didn’t give it away). The destination is home to Kentucky’s only reindeer farm that features an immersive experience, and it’s easy to see why it’s such a popular holiday stop. The family-owned Reindeer Farm offers the unique opportunity to see these majestic creatures up close while ensuring an authentic, respectful animal encounter. Dollywood’s Smoky Mountain Christmas by The Dollywood Company

Reindeer encounters allow guests to enter the pen with the animals to learn about them (and take pictures, of course). In addition to seeing the reindeer, enjoy train rides, breakfast with Santa, hot cocoa, an indoor playground and more. The Reindeer Farm’s 2023 season begins in November and continues on select dates through Dec. 23. If you’re looking for the perfect gift while supporting local businesses, a stop at Gypsy Moon Marketplace is a must. These are typically held in November. This multi-day barn sale is run by a mother- and daughter-in-law duo and features approximately 80 vendors selling handmade items.

4 UNIQUE

holiday party themes BY METRO

The holiday season is the time of year filled with plenty of opportunities to socialize with friends and family as people will be attending many different events. Savvy hosts and hostesses may want to set their occasions apart in different ways. Consider these four unique party themes when planning. 1. ORNAMENT EXCHANGE

Who couldn’t use a new trinket for the mantle or an ornament to adorn the tree? Ask all guests to bring a gift-wrapped ornament to the party. Then place numbers in a bowl and have each guest draw a number; this is the order in which they will then select an ornament. After the first person makes their selection, subsequent guests can choose a new ornament from the pile or “steal” one from those already picked. The guest who picked first then has one last chance to keep or steal at the end. 2. TROPICAL HOLIDAY

The weather outside may be frightful, but a tropical island party

8 | SHOP LOCAL: LAST MINUTE GIFT IDEAS • December 2023 • A special advertising supplement to The Frederick News-Post

can be utterly delightful. Give the event an island flair with fruity drinks, grilled kabobs, coconut desserts, and steel-drum music. 3. GRINCHY PARTY

A party devoted to the Dr. Seuss character The Grinch can be a fun way to pass time together. While the holidays are supposed to be holly and jolly, a Grinch-themed party can put the emphasis on being a little bit more naughty than nice. And who doesn’t enjoy an ample serving of roast beast? Have guests come decked out in Grinch costumes or Grinch emblazoned t-shirts or other clothing. 4. CHRISTMAS KARAOKE

Set up the karaoke machine or utilize one of the services available online, and make sure that guests are prepared to belt out their favorite holiday tunes – whether traditional carols or pop hits. A group of ladies can join together for The Waitresses’ “Christmas Wrapping” or guests can try their hands at hitting the high notes of Mariah Carey’s ubiquitous “All I Want for Christmas Is You.” Chances are serving some liquid courage will help guests loosen up and be more inclined to grab the microphone.

By CRYSTAL SCHELLE SPECIAL TO THE NEWS-POST

While the hustle and bustle of the holidays can fill people with joy, finding the perfect gift for someone can be overwhelming. How do you choose something that won’t be stuffed in the back of the closet or re-gifted, or an item they’ve already bought for themselves? One idea is to choose a gift that’s also great for those who aren’t great a wrapping: an experience.

Walkersville Southern Railroad

There are plenty of things to experience in Frederick County, from wine, spirits and beer tastings to fine dining and casual restaurants, as well as hiking and biking.

The park also offers more than 40 zip line experiences, with a new one opening in the spring. According to Pantin, zip lining is for ages 4 and up, and youngsters must ride with an adult.

Listen to the people on your list about what they have always wanted to do or maybe something they’ve wanted to do again since the pandemic, and help them make their dream a reality.

“The zip line is my favorite thing to do,” she said. “But the difficulty in the different levels is what everyone enjoys.”

Here are some ideas to buy local and give someone the gift of experience. For the adrenaline junkie. A gift certificate from Tree Trekkers Frederick Outdoor Aerial Adventure Ropes and Zipline Park in Frederick might be something to add to the list. Tree Trekkers offers 16 trails with eight difficulty levels, from beginners to the Black and Double Black Diamond trail for experts. Climbers start from a platform off the ground. From there, they go from platform to platform by overcoming a series of obstacles. The obstacles are recommended for ages 7 and up. Nyzie Pantin, office supervisor, said the trails are self-guided and can help to build selfconfidence, which is why it’s often used for team building.

Tree Trekkers is at 9560 Old National Pike, Frederick. Call 301-888-8735 or visit treetrekkersmd.com. Up, up and away. What’s more romantic than a hot air balloon ride over the county? Tailwinds Over Frederick, 330 Aviation Way in Frederick, offers a bird’s eye view of the county. To find out more information on pricing and how to book a flight, go to tailwindsoverfrederick.com. Take a trip on a train. The chug of a train may warm the heart of a family member. Walkersville Southern Railroad, at 34 West Pennsylvania Ave., Walkersville, offers excursion trips, mystery trains and charters throughout the scenic Monocacy Valley. It’s also family friendly, as the railroad was named No. 3 by KidsOutandAbout.com for Top 20 Places to Take Kids. For pricing and more information, go to wsrr.org/ws, or call 301- 898-0899.

Festive films

that make for a perfect family movie night this season BY METRO

A CHRISTMAS STORY (1983)

This beloved classic based on the writings of author Jean Shepherd focuses on young Ralphie Parker and his humorous family. That family includes his father, played to much laughs by legendary actor Darren McGavin. All Ralphie wants for Christmas is a coveted Red Ryder air rifle, and generations of fans have enjoyed watching this film to see if Ralphie’s dream comes true.

HOME ALONE (1990)

Not unlike “A Christmas Story,” this instant classic devotes much of its story to a young boy. Eight-yearold Kevin McAllister (Macaulay Culkin) awakens to an empty house after his parents forgetfully leave him behind as they depart on a holiday trip to Paris with their extended family. That proves to be bad news for bungling burglars Harry (Joe Pesci) and Marv (Daniel Stern), who are outwitted by Kevin at every turn.

ELF (2003)

Middle-aged Buddy (Will Ferrell) grew up in the North Pole believing he is an elf, despite being significantly larger than the kind-hearted elves who raised him. Upon learning he is not an actual elf, Buddy is determined to reunite with the father (James Caan) he’s never known. Hilarity ensues as the innocent Buddy ends up in the big city in search of his father.

IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE” (1946)

Among the most beloved holiday movies ever made, this classic stars Jimmy Stewart as George Bailey, a devoted family man who set aside his own big-city dreams to save the family business and, ultimately, his small hometown of Bedford Falls. Lamenting some bad luck that leaves him on the cusp of financial ruin, George wishes he’d never been born, only to be shown by an especially kind and patient angel-in-training (Henry Travers) how much worse off Bedford Falls and its residents might have been if he had never existed.

“JINGLE ALL THE WAY” (1996)

Featuring a future Governor of California in the lead role, this hijinks-filled holiday classic follows the efforts of Howard Langston (Arnold Schwarzenegger) as he tries to secure the must-have gift of the season for his son, Jamie (Jake Lloyd). Howard soon finds himself competing against a father (Sinbad) who’s equally devoted to find the coveted Turbo-Man action figure.

Holiday Traditions Family activities

Fun books to read to children this holiday season BY METRO

Children spend much of the holiday season anticipating the arrival of the man in the red suit, and that enthusiasm can be contagious. Reading classic and new holiday stories to children is one tradition any family can embrace. Families have their own unique traditions during the holiday season, but one popular way to harness kids’ enthusiasm is to read them holiday stories. There’s no shortage of great holiday books for kids, but here are a handful that kids may remember well into adulthood. • “The Polar Express,” by Chris Van Allsburg: The beloved tale is the story of a young boy who boards a mysterious train bound for the North Pole. • “The Littlest Elf,” by Brandi Dougherty: Part of a series, this story focuses on a tiny elf named Oliver and a series of misadventures as he navigates his way through Santa’s workshop. • “Olive, the Other Reindeer,” by Vivian Walsh: Olive is no ordinary reindeer. In fact, Olive is a dog who heads to the North Pole believing she is a reindeer. Her decision to join Santa’s team ultimately benefits the big man and his trusty reindeer.

• “The Miracle of the First Poinsettia: A Mexican Christmas Story,” by Joanne Oppenheim: A little girl named Juanita is the star of this retelling of a traditional Mexican tale with a valuable lesson. • “Gingerbread Mouse: A Christmas Holiday Book for Kids,” by Katy Bratun: A fallen tree branch almost ruins Christmas for Mouse, whose determination and resourcefulness mixed in with a little Christmas magic ensures she finds a place to call home in time for the holidays. • “A Night in Santa’s Great Big Bag,” by Kristin Kladstrup: Santa saves the day in this tale starring a young boy’s favorite stuffed animal, whose excitement for Christmas compels him to climb into Santa’s big bag of presents on Christmas Eve. • “Santa Claus and the Three Bears,” by Maria

Modugno: This twist on the popular tale “Goldilocks and the Three Bears” finds three unsuspecting bears encountering a familiar fellow in a red suit upon returning home after a nighttime walk. • “Twas the Night Before Christmas: Edited by Santa Claus for the Benefit of Children of the 21st Century,” by Clement C. Moore • “How the Grinch Stole Christmas!” by Dr. Seuss: Children can join generations of fans that came before them as they hear the redemption story of the Grinch who was once determined to ruin Christmas for the happy people of Who-ville. • “The Nutcracker,” by the New York City Ballet: The classic story is retold based on famed choreographer George Balanchine’s production.

Holiday Traditions Christmas photos

HOWARDSARTS.COM

Snap a great Christmas card photo BY METRO

Greeting cards are among the first signs that the holiday season has arrived. Mailboxes are filled with cards and email inboxes have new messages popping up each day wishing others well. A Shutterfly poll conducted by Ipsos in 2021 discovered that, while traditional holiday messages are by far the most popular at 63 percent, younger age groups show more interest in other types of cards, such as photo cards. Forty-one percent of people polled prefer to receive photo cards. That means holiday well-wishers may want to brush up on their photography skills. • Keep cards in the back of your mind. While the Norman Rockwellesque family tableau or a wintry Christmas scene is a go-to holiday card, any photo-worthy moment throughout the year, such as vacationing or enjoying time together as a family, can suffice. • Avoid busy prints. Stick to solid colors when posing for holiday photos; otherwise, recipients’ eyes may not know where to look when viewing the photo. Photo subjects should coordinate, but wardrobes that completely match can seem contrived.

• Avoid red eye. Proper lighting can help avoid the occurrence of “red eye” in photographs, which happens when the flash bounces off a wide pupil. • Embrace candid shots or mixups. Some of the funniest and most memorable photos are when things didn’t go according to plan. A crying infant or a parent looking away from the lens may not be magazine worthy, but don’t be so quick to discard those less-than-perfect snaps. • Zoom in tight and cropped. Card recipients want to look at you and not the surroundings. Avoid landscape shots on holiday cards, and be sure to focus on the subjects’ faces as much as possible. • Angle correctly for flattering photos. Adjust your body posture to look your best. Turn the lower half of your body to the side and then adjust the upper half to move slightly toward the camera to appear more svelte. Position the camera lens at eye level or above to avoid double chins in photos. • Show off your sense of humor. Show friends and family you like to laugh by posing in funny ways. Recreate childhood photos of yore, or imitate photos from album covers or movie posters. Relax and have fun! Plan outfits, watch lighting and catch kids at the right time to create memorable cards.
