Gangstagrass
Thursday, February 3 | 7:30 PM Discovery Series
Gangstagrass began as a solo project in 2006 when lead member, Rench, began releasing music online from his home studio in Brooklyn. What began as a side project, combining his lifelong love of hip hop and bluegrass, pioneered a new genre of music that garnered thousands of streams over the course of four years. Major network FX liked what they heard too, and in 2010 it recruited Rench to create the commercial track for the network’s new show Justified. When the show finally launched, rapper T.O.N.E-z joined in on the deal with the lyrical track for Rench’s original melodies creating the title theme song “Long Hard Times to Come.” The song has reached over 3 million streams since its release and Gangstagrass has been expanding with it. The band has released 2 studio albums and now consists of 5 members, Rench (vocals/ guitar/beats), Dan Whitener (banjo/ vocals), Brian Farrow (fiddle/vocals), R-Son The Voice of Reason (vocals), and Dolio The Sleuth (vocals).

Live Series
Russian Ballet Theater Friday, February 18 | 8:00 PM The Russian Ballet Theatre is pleased to present a breathtaking new production of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake. It is all the splendor which has mesmerized ballet audiences for over a century, plus a bit more. The production delights with new as well as time honored Russian traditions including gorgeous detailed hand-painted sets, added choreography and radiant hand-sewn costumes following designs originally envisioned by the great theater masters. Choreographer Nadezhda Kalinina lovingly retouches the oldest St. Petersburg version of the ballet. With a new prologue, she offers explanation for the wrath of evil sorcerer Rothbart, undoubtedly leaving the audience flushed with emotion. Equally fascinating is the work of young, accomplished designer Sergei Novikov, who has perfected not only exquisite new sets, but also 150 gorgeous costumes that bring fresh representation to this time-less ballet. Irina Strukova’s grand artistry perfects this already magnificent production. Award-winning Strukova, known for her film makeup creations, has created hair designs and special effects makeup that together with the dazzling costumes, further enlighten this whimsical fantasy. Prima Ballerina Olga Kifyak dances the lead roles of Odette (The White Swan) and Odile (The Black Swan).

Founding members, Gerry Beckley and Dewey Bunnell (along with former band mate, the late Dan Peek) met in high school in London in the late 1960s and quickly harmonized their way to the top of the charts on the strength of their signature song "A Horse With No Name." America became a global household name and paved the way with an impressive string of hits following the success of their first #1 single. Their best-known tunes, which also include "I Need You," "Ventura Highway," "Don't Cross The River," "Tin Man," "Lonely People," and "Sister Golden Hair" were cornerstones of 1970's Top 40 and FM rock radio. America's albums--six certified gold and/or platinum, with their first greatest hits collection, History, hitting four plus million in sales – display a fuller range of the trio's talents than their singles. The material encompassed an ambitious artistic swath; from effects-laden rockers to oddball medleys to soul-bearing ballads, America displays a flawless blend of disparate genres and styles.

An Evening with Brian Culbertson
Wednesday, April 6 | 7:30 PM Live Series
Over the course of crafting a 20-album catalogue and architecting more than 30 Billboard No. 1 singles as a multiinstrumentalist, songwriter and producer, Brian Culbertson has charted his own unique course in music. Culbertson burst onto the scene in 1994 with a chart-topping album that he recorded in his college apartment featuring keyboard-led contemporary jazz tracks. “Long Night Out” landed him a lengthy record deal and signaled that a star was born. Flash forward to present day, his aptly titled “XX” album – those X’s are Roman numerals – finds Culbertson making a record unlike any of his previous releases because of its diversity. “It’s a mix of things that I’ve done throughout my twenty records. There’s a lot of funky instrumentals, some pop-sounding tracks, a couple slow jams, straight-ahead jazz, gospel, some vocals, lots of horns and some straight-up FUNK!” said the Chicago-based Culbertson. “The album is very much a mixture of some modern sounding programming along with live instruments, too. Real drums on almost everything mixed with programming. Definitely a cool sound.”

1964 The Tribute
Thursday, April 28 | 8:00 PM Live Series
When “1964” The Tribute started in the early ‘80s, the members of the group thought the gig would last for a few lunch time shows. They never could have imagined it would still be going strong in 2021. More than 30 years of researching and performing have made “1964” masters of their craft. They recreate an early ‘60s live Beatles concert with period instruments, clothing, hairstyles and onstage banter with an accuracy that is unmatched. Mac Ruffing, who performs as Paul McCartney, is so meticulous in his portrayal of Paul that he learned to play the bass guitar left-handed despite being right-handed. It’s attention to detail of that magnitude that explains why they are hailed by both critics and fans alike as the most authentic and endearing Beatles tribute. “1964” has played sold out shows at famous venues like Carnegie Hall and Red Rocks many times. For those who never saw the Beatles live in concert but always wanted to experience Beatlemania, this is as close as anyone could possibly get to feeling the magic.

Our Histor
Two days before Christmas 1926, a sell-out crowd of more than 1,500 people gathered at Frederick’s plush new movie palace — the Tivoli Theater. Built by the Stanley Crandall Company at a cost of $350,000, the Tivoli offered an atmosphere of refined elegance. Theater-goers marveled at the modern centerpiece of it all: the magnificent Wurlitzer organ. Installed in 1926 at a cost of $18,500, it continues to entertain today’s audiences during silent movies and singalongs. The Weinberg’s is the only Wurlitzer in Maryland still in its original installation. The Weinberg was Frederick’s first airconditioned public building, all due to the 1939 and 1940 American Horse of the Year, Challedon. Locally-bred Challedon’s owner, W.L. Brann, and Dr. Edward Thomas, a race fan and patron of the Tivoli accompanied the horse to race in the 1940 Hollywood Gold
36 2021-22 SEASON
Cup. At a pre-race party, Warner Brothers head Jack Warner was overheard saying he was going to bet $50,000 on the favorite. Thomas convinced Warner to bet on Challedon instead. When Challedon won the race and a hefty sum for Warner, Warner asked how he could return the favor. Thomas’s request was to install air-conditioning at the Tivoli, and Warner made good on his offer.
The Tivoli fell into disrepair during the 1950s. In 1959, Dan and Alyce Weinberg purchased the building for $150,000 and restored it to its former glory. By the 1970s, downtown Frederick was deteriorating, and the Tivoli struggled to compete with modern movie theaters. Its struggle reached its low point when storm-driven waters flooded the theater and downtown Frederick in 1976. The water peaked three feet above stage level, submerging the seats and floating the Wurlitzer
ry
onto the stage. Community members joined forces to salvage the historic landmark—organ and all. After sixteen months, the theater reopened as the Weinberg Center for the Arts, honoring the Weinberg family, who gifted the theater to the City of Frederick. The Weinberg has drawn such famous names as Marcel Marceau, Hal Holbrook, George Carlin, Judy Collins, Tammy Wynette, Garrison Keillor, the Temptations, Michael Moore, and Tom Jones. Today, the center is owned and operated by the City of Frederick, with the support of the Weinberg Center for the Arts Inc. — a nonprofit organization created in 1995. Thanks to a successful capital campaign begun in 2008, the theater was renovated in 2011, once more restored it to its former grandeur.
