Touching Memories
Fidget mats encourage fine motor skills, sensory stimulation for those with Alzheimer’s BY LAUREN LAROCCA LLAROCCA@NEWSPOST.COM
S
taying true to their mission to be of service to their community, members of the Clustered Spires Quilt Guild work on several projects throughout the year and donate quilts and blankets — and occasionally fidget mats — to individuals, nonprofits, senior centers and others in need in the Frederick area. Fidget mats are small, sewn quilts that include various trinkets and fabric textures. They are designed for people with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, as well as some disorders on the autism spectrum, to engage with and keep their hands occupied. They are relatively small, so as to be suitable to put in a person’s lap or on a tabletop in front of them. Last fall, guild members created fidget mats to donate to the dementia unit at Homewood. Olga Schrichte, longtime quilter and member of the guild, taught members her method for making the mats and showed examples. “Think of it as an activity mat for an adult, rather than a child,” Schrichte said. Several members created additional mats to give to friends and family. Guild member Becky Lyon created two for the husband of friend Sally Sinn. “When he got home from rehab, Becky came by with her prototype, and it was a hit. He responded to it so well,” recalled Sinn, who cares for her husband at their home. “I hung it on 4 | MAY 2022

explores his world through touch and tactile sensations. He has not been able to respond to a vision test for about two years, so she is not sure how well he can see, making the sense of touch all the more important.
“He will reach out and touch my sweater,” she said. “It’s important for him to relate to his world this way. The fidget mats are soothing to him in two ways: It’s something he can manage with his fine motor skills, and it’s fa-
Make Your Own Fidget Mat
The basics
Mats have three layers, much like a quilt: the top fabric, flannel backing and a stabilizer in between. Flannel makes a great stabilizer fabric. Whatever stabilizer you choose, it should not be too floppy or too firm. Mats should be small enough to fit in a lap and are usually a bit larger than a placemat but not too large as to be overwhelming. An alternative to a fidget mat, for the more advanced seamster or seamstress, is a fidget apron — a wearable fidget mat.
Pick a theme Find fabric and items suitable for the person you’re making the fidget mat for. Think of that person’s hobbies and favorite color schemes when finding fabric and other items for the fidget mat. Do they love butterflies? Baseball? Gardening? The ocean? You can find just about anything on fabric. You can also print family photos on fabric to bring personal memories to the project. You might want to incorporate an article of their clothing or a favorite old key or piece or jewelry.

the recipient. They can be as simple or elaborate as desired. “Birthdays and Christmas would come around, and what do you get him?” Sinn said about her husband. “Fidget mats were the perfect gift for him.”
Make sure everything on the mat is machine washable and durable. Secure all items on the mat or have a place for them to be stored, such as a pocket that shuts with Velcro. Do not use slippery fabric like satin on the back, as you don’t want it to slide off a table or lap. Olga Schrichte recommends using flannel on the back. LIVING
How to Choose a
Retirement Home
S
ooner or later, most aging people need more care than they can receive at home. That’s where retirement homes come in. But different homes provide different services and different standards of care, and they can charge vastly different amounts. So how do you begin to choose? The best way to decide whether a retirement home is right for you or your loved one is to visit. If possible, all stakeholders should visit together: the care recipient and members of the family. But how can you extrapolate from the authorized tour to guess what dayto-day life would be like at a facility? A good place to start is by asking these five questions. 1) Is the home Medicare and Medicaid certified? “Certified” means that the home has passed an inspection conducted by an agent sent by the state. A facility that passed may accept funding from the agency. You can find the home’s certification status on your state’s Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services page, along with any citations for abuse at that location. 2) Will the care recipient have to move if his or her condition worsens? Some retirement homes provide no assistance for residents except cooking, cleaning and laundry services. Others provide assisted living, which includes help with daily activities like bathing and dressing. Still others provide skilled medical care for condi-
tions like dementia. It may be worth considering a facility that provides a higher level of care than the resident needs at the time he or she moves in. Otherwise, you may

on an official tour, but take note of what you can. Do nurses address residents by name? Do they knock before entering a private room? In short, are the residents treated like guests or like obstacles? 4) What do the rooms look like? This question can seem trivial next to concerns about care, but it’s an important one. Residents might live in the same room for years. Are the rooms big enough? Is the furniture sturdy? Is the space clean and well lit? Is there a window? Does the wifi work? If it’s not a room you’d rent in other circumstances, you shouldn’t move into it now. 5) What amenities does the facility have? Residents spend the whole day in retirement homes, so there should be things to do. Many homes offer classes or volunteer opportunities. Some have a senior-friendly gym or swimming pool. Ask yourself what you can’t live without, and make sure it’s available. This is just a summary of a complex process. You will want to get help from financial and medical professionals. Choosing a retirement home is a big decision, and there’s no shortage of METRO options. But if you ask the right quesneed to either hire a home health aide tions, you’ll be on your way to making the right choice. or move homes later on. PEOPLE
‘Words from the Heart’ Frederick author shares veterans’ stories in new book
n a one-story house on top of Braddock Mountain, inside a cozy living room brimming with mementos from a lifetime of adventure, Patricia Redmond heaved a massive binder onto a table covered with a lacy white tablecloth. She flipped through its pages, pointing out aging photos of veterans secured by thin sheets of plastic. Over the sound of pouring rain, she recalled the stories they shared with her and the hundreds of hours she’s spent carefully transcribing their every word. “I have 18 of these,” Redmond said, tapping the binder’s hard plastic cover. Redmond started volunteering in 2003 with the Veterans History Project, an initiative launched in 2000 by the U.S. Congress that preserves the personal accounts of American war veterans and makes them publicly available on the Library of Congress website. Thinking she’d interview one or two veterans, Redmond got involved with the national program through the Frederick chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. But she found the conversations so exhilarating, she kept going. Now 80, Redmond has interviewed over 120 veterans from all around the country. She published about 75 of their stories last year in a collection titled “Words from the Heart: When America’s Veterans Speak.” Although transcripts of Redmond’s interviews are available in a database on the project’s website — and some even include audio recordings — she
Though many of the veterans Redmond features in her book served in Korea or Vietnam, she also shares the story of five World War I veterans and nearly two dozen World War II veterans. Fewer narratives are from people who have served in more recent conflicts, Redmond said, adding that it takes some veterans many years to feel ready to talk about when they went through while fighting for their country. It seems as if Redmond has dozens of stories, ready to be told, right on the tip of her tongue. There’s Guy Whidden, a Frederick resident who fought in the 502nd Parachute Infantry Regiment of the Army’s 101st Airborne Division during WWII and was one of the paratroopers who jumped into Normandy on D-Day. Then there’s Charles McGee, a Tuskegee Airman who served in WWII, Vietnam and Korea and made over 400 combat flights. During President Donald Trump’s final State of the Union address, he promoted the 100-year-old retired colonel to brigadier general. Redmond also fondly remembers spending time with Mary McCloskey Brockway, a nurse assigned to Hawaii in WWII who lived in Middletown until she died at 103 years old, and Kenyon Parker, who joined the Army after being rejected by the Navy, which didn’t start accepting Black service members until 1942. Among Redmond’s favorite stories ALICE FRISHKORN to recount is meeting the “Kissing SailPatricia Redmond or” and the woman he’s embracing in the famous photo captured by Alfred wanted to share the veterans’ stories “Sometimes people don’t understand Eisenstaedt. with a broader audience. She’s especially ... how fortunate we are to be able to “She lived in Frederick, Maryland,” passionate about making young people live in this country,” she said. “Freedom Redmond said, her eyes brightening isn’t free. It costs a lot of lives.” and widening with excitement. aware of the brutal realities of war.

Where you can buy “Words from the Heart” You can purchase “Words from the Heart: When America’s Veterans Speak” on amazon. com as a paperback or for your Kindle. You can also find the book at any bookstore, Redmond says. Redmond’s first book, “We the Widows: A Guide to your New Life,” is also available on amazon. com.
Though the woman, Greta Friedman, didn’t know George Mendonsa at the time he planted one on her in Times Square on Aug. 14, 1945 — “V-J Day” — she later introduced him to Redmond. Redmond met Mendonsa in-person when he came to see the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C. He gave her a kiss on the cheek. “I told him, ‘Well, you certainly have mellowed in the last 60 years,’” Redmond recalled, laughing. A self-proclaimed romantic, Redmond also loves to tell the story of John Norton and Leslie Cameron Smith. They dated for about two years when they were younger and may have even gotten married, but Smith wanted to go to medical school and Norton wanted to “jump out of airplanes,” he told to Redmond. He served three years in World War II and, upon his return, Smith was married and working as a physician. Norton
also later married and after 46 years, his wife, Cheyney McNabb, died. A year later, Norton got a call from a friend, who told him Smith was widowed and living in Kensington. He took her out to lunch, where he found out she had saved all the love letters he’d written her while attending West Point. He took off his class ring and asked her to marry him that same day. “I thought that was the greatest love story of all,” Redmond said with a smile. She spoke with Norton for six hours and it took her a week to transcribe their conversation. Redmond also shared her own love story. She met her husband, Lt. Col. Robert Redmond, when he was teaching at West Point. Her cousin, who was also teaching at the academy, set them up on a blind date. They were married for 33 years, at one point traveling to Japan with Redmond’s three children when he was assigned to Camp Zama, an Army base near Tokyo. Patricia Redmond’s living room is now filled with keepsakes from the trip, from two large dolls to a polished black table. Robert Redmond died in 2007 at the age of 68. He became ill with cancer after being exposed to Agent Orange while serving in Vietnam. After he died, Patricia Redmond had their wedding rings formed into the shape of hearts. She still wears them on a chain around her neck. Ever since Redmond started interviewing veterans for the Veterans History Project, she asked to interview her husband. “Someday,” he always replied. He finally sat down to tell his wife his story when he knew he was dying. It was difficult, Redmond remembered. They had to stop halfway through for him to go to the hospital to be treated for side effects from a medication he was taking. But when he returned to their home, they finished the interview. “I was really glad that he spoke,” Redmond said, “because it’s now history, too.” Follow Angela Roberts on Twitter: @24_angier

Tips for Caregivers BY ELDER SERVICES PROVIDER COUNCIL
A
ARP reports that in 2020, more than one in five Americans were providing care to an adult or child with special needs. If you consider yourself to be a caregiver, you are not alone. Some people become caregivers literally overnight, as when an otherwise independent and functional parent has a stroke and suddenly faces a lifetime of needing help to function. Others come to caregiving gradually, as when an aging parent or spouse slowly declines over time, needing more and more help as the years go by. Regardless of how you got there, a caregiver’s journey can be long and winding, with plenty of twists and turns in the middle. Though caregiving brings many rewards, it isn’t easy and can put great strain on the individual caregiver. It can also cause stress on family systems, employment systems, social systems and more, which in turn causes more stress for the caregiver. It can be a vicious cycle. Caregivers have significantly higher rates of illness than their non-caregiving counterparts. Their physical health and mental wellbeing can be tremendously compromised. How, then, does a caregiver stay well so they can continue provide the care that their loved one needs and manage their own lives? As they tell you on the airplane, you must put on your own oxygen mask before you put one on someone else. Here are some tips to help. Don’t get overwhelmed by the big picture. Try to look at each day. Are you doing something each day that is good for you? Eating a good meal? Getting a bit of exercise? Talking with someone about something other than caregiving? Laughing? Finding joy in something? Start there, on the day-to-day level, and then look a little broader. When was the last time you saw the doctor or dentist? Are you taking your medications as prescribed? Are you sleeping? Have you been to church, a ballgame,
the mall or the golf course? What makes you feel good, and how can you make that happen? It is OK to do those things for you. Actually, it’s not just OK but critical to your ability to provide good, long-term care to your loved one. Let go of the guilt and go! How can you get some time for yourself? Consider asking another family member or a friend to give you some relief. Start with an hour and build up if they are resistant or unsure. Take up that neighbor or friend who has asked repeatedly what he or she can do for you. Consider hiring a home care aide to give you some time off or look into adult day care. It may not be simple, but you will be rewarded for making the effort. Consider joining a caregiver support group. Whether in person, online or by phone, talking with other caregivers can be beneficial on many levels, from practical sharing of ideas and resources to emotional support and the knowledge that you aren’t alone. There are a number of local agencies that offer support groups for caregivers. You can also find groups online on Facebook and other sites. Stay educated and aware. Consume information and education in doses that you can handle. Is a book about caregiving completely overwhelming to you? Stick with short articles online about the issue you need help with. Prefer talking with a human? Call the Caregiver Support Program at Senior Services at 301-600-1234 or a disease-specific hotline. Participate in education programs that fit your time schedule. The Elder Services Provider Council offers monthly webinars for caregivers providing tips and local resource information in a one-hour Zoom format on the second Wednesday of each month from 1 to 2 p.m. A Compass for Caregivers offers webinars with practical, useful, local information to help caregivers along their journey. Videos of past presentations are also available. Visit espcfrederick.com (click on “Event Details”) for more information and registration links.

SUDOKU
Here’s How It Works:
Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
