Golden Gears Car Club celebrates 50 years BY CRYSTAL SCHELLE SPECIAL TO THE NEWS-POST

hen the Golden Gears Car Club of Frederick started in 1973, the meetups probably looked like a scene from “American Graffiti.” While the new Monte Carlo was crowned the best car of the year that year, chances are, most of the metal beauties car enthusiasts displayed dated back to the 1940s, ‘50s or even ‘60s. This year, during cruise-ins, visitors might still see a few cars dating back to the ‘50s, but more often than not, they’ll see more cars that were brandnew off the manufacturing line when

The club is “dedicated to the preservation, use, and enjoyment of historic, classic, muscle and special interest vehicles,” according to its website, goldengears.org. This year marks the club’s 50th anniversary. In honor of the milestone, club historian Robbie Smith wrote about his memories with the club on its website. The first meeting was held at the Auto Parts & Specialty’s on DeGrange Street, he writes, before the club started meeting regularly at the Frederick National Guard Armory. But it wasn’t until the third meeting that it became the first official meeting of the Golden Gears Car Club. Smith was the first person to be voted into the club. Wayne Wilt was sworn in as president. Other members included Donnie Lawson, Wayne White, Steve Fogle, Frosty Smith, Reds Main, Jim Napoli and Bill Brookfield, who was also the designer of the club logo. Randy Zimmerman came along soon after. Today, the club has 80 paying members, whose ages range from teenagers to men and women over 60. “The reason for starting the club was that the only clubs around this area were East Coast Chevys and The Frederick County Street Rods,” Smith wrote. “These clubs were specialty clubs only. So, we started a club that was open to anything, cars or trucks, old or new. Also, in order to help get kids off the streets, we used to go to the drag strips on club days and win a
lot of trophies for the most members and the best appearing club.” At the heart of the club is more than just cars. Henley said the club also comes together to give back to charity organizations. “Over the years, as we’ve got bigger, [we’ve] started doing some donations to a local organization,” he said. According to the club’s records, as of this year, the car club has donated to more than 60 individuals, businesses or charities throughout Frederick County. Henley said the club has donated to everything from a therapeutic riding club to veterans organizations. “We’ve also helped individuals in need,” he said. “We’ve had people come to us.” Donations are mostly made to those living in Frederick County, although the club occasionally donates outside the county lines. The Golden Gears Car Club hosts cruise-ins on the second Saturday of the month from April to October in the

At Home parking lot off of Monocacy Boulevard in Frederick. These are free events that anyone can come to. “You can come out, pop your hood, bring a chair out, listen to the music and talk to each other, then you go around and see each other’s vehicles,” Henley said. “It’s kind of like a retrospect of what it was — just sitting back, enjoying each other’s company and looking at vehicles.” The club has made it a point to host cruise-ins that have a festival-like feel, featuring music, food trucks and other activities onsite. Henley said the club has survived because of longtime members Smith and Zimmerman, who still participate. The club itself is still very much active. “We do, on average, about 15 to 16 shows a year,” Henley said. “We have had as many as 25 or 30.” In the off-season, the club still meets the first Tuesday of the month in Frederick. “It’s just a good group of people,” Ronald Rippeon of Frederick shows off his 1972 Chevy SS at a Golden Gears Car Club meetup. Chase away chills (and sniffles) with soup BY METRO
S
oup is a staple anytime the weather is chilly or when a person feels like they are coming down with a cold. The warm, therapeutic effects of a delicious bowl of soup are hard to dismiss, and may sometimes work as well as the best medicines available. While zucchini may be known as a summer vegetable, this popular squash is at home in a tasty soup any time of year. Top with giant, cheesy croutons for a filling and scrumptious crowd-pleaser. This recipe for “Zucchini Soup with Cheddar Rusks” from “The Culinary Institute of America Book of Soups” (Lebhar-Friedman Books) by The Culinary Institute of America makes for a warming winter meal. Zucchini Soup with Cheddar Rusks
Makes 8 servings 4 bacon strips, minced 2 onions, diced (about 21⁄2 cups) 4 garlic cloves, minced (about 2 teaspoons) 4 medium zucchini, diced (7 to 8 cups) 6 cups chicken broth 4 plum tomatoes, peeled, seeded and chopped, (about 1 cup) 1⁄2 cup tomato puree 4 tablespoons tarragon or cider vinegar 2 tablespoons minced fresh basil 1⁄2 teaspoon salt, or to taste 1⁄4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, or to taste 8 cheddar rusks (see below) Cook the bacon in a soup pot over medium heat until the fat is released and the bacon bits are crisp, 6 to 8 minutes. 6 | DECEMBER 2023

Step back in time with Christmas goose
HOLIDAYS
T
BY METRO
he holiday season is a sentimental time of year. Nostalgia for past holiday seasons and excitement about what’s to come make this a particularly special time of year for millions of people across the globe. It’s not uncommon for Christmas celebrants to include a little history in their decorations and celebrations each year. Some families may read Charles Dickens’ early Victorian novella “A Christmas Carol” together before watching one of the many film adaptations of the beloved story. Many popular Christmas carols also date back to the 19th century if not earlier, adding another degree of nostalgia to the season. Even food can add a touch of the sentimental to Christmas celebrations. This year, holiday hosts can create some nostalgia around the Christmas dinner table by serving this recipe for Roasted Christmas Goose, courtesy of the Food Network and Mark Slawson of the The Wort Hotel in Jackson, Wyoming. Roasted Christmas Goose

Enjoy a tart accompaniment to holiday meals BY METRO
Cranberry sauce is a common accompaniment to turkey and other foods during the holiday season. It adds a refreshingly tart, yet sweet flavor to foods, and there’s no shortage of ways to utilize cranberry sauce. Individuals may be quick to grab a can of prepared cranberry sauce for their meals, but it’s easy to whip up a batch of this beloved side with very little effort. The result is a cranberry sauce that is fresh and flavorful and does not feature the gelatinous consistency of some canned varieties.
