Boost your mood and health at these dance classes in Frederick
LIVING
You should be dancing BY GARY BENNETT
SPECIAL TO THE NEWS-POST
Y
ou should be dancing — yeah! The Bee Gees sang those words back in the disco-crazed late 1970s, and boy, were they right. I can confirm what you probably already know: Dancing is a terrific aerobic and mental workout and a lot of fun, too. Not to get too technical, but a large body of research touts numerous health benefits to dancing: • Boosts cardiovascular health • Builds core strength • Promotes flexibility • Helps with weight loss • Assists with bone health • Helps to prevent memory loss • Promotes good mental health • Minimizes stress • Enhances a feeling of social connection Of course, health benefits will vary according to the type of dancing you do. Slow dancing is still great for those non-physical benefits but won’t do much for the more physical items. Not a dancer? Here’s the good news: It’s never too late to start. And no one will care what you look like doing it. Sure, you can just get out there and shake around a bit like we all did in high school. That can be a lot of fun and a good workout, too. But for the more adventurous among us, why not wow the crowd and learn a few coordinated moves with a partner? As you might expect, Frederick is well-served by dance studios and other organizations to help you get dancing. Sign up for a class and in no time, you’ll be impressing others in public — or yourself in the privacy of your home. If my wife and I can do it for our 40th

Depending on your level of experience, you will likely need anywhere from three to nine lessons to feel confident learning the rhythm, timing of the music, the dance steps, how to lead or follow and more complex moves like spins, dips and potentially a lift (if you’re feeling daring). My wife and I polished off a pretty simple routine combining swing and hustle steps in six easy lessons, plus we practiced some at home, too, but not too much. The easiest dances to learn are the waltz, foxtrot, swing, rhumba and cha

cha. Most reputable dance instructors will be able to discern what you want to accomplish and your ability level quickly. Start with a song you want to dance to and go from there. We chose to learn a dance that worked for the song “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life” from the movie “Dirty Dancing” and had no regrets. There is wisdom in that adage “dance like no one is watching.” Of course, it helps if you have confidence and a few moves to show off. The following organizations do not comprise an exhaustive list, but they all
offer adult dance classes, and I considered them all in my quest to impress. Keep in mind that many Frederick-area dance studios specialize in children’s dance or a specific type of dance such as belly, ballet, pole or aerial. Those studios are not listed here.
City Rec Department Go with the City for a more casual dance experience and to drop in as needed. Salsa, swing, line, jazz and tap classes will be taught at the William R. Talley Rec Center on North Bentz Street over six weeks beginning in Jan-
uary. Classes are held in the evenings Sunday through Wednesday. Prices range from $35 to $75 per session.
YMCA The Y offers classes in ballet, tap, ballroom and hip-hop. Go with ballroom dancing to get you onto the floor quickly. No prior experience is needed. Classes typically run one hour and are offered on various days in the afternoon and evening. Monthly memberships for adults start at about $50.
24/7 Dance Studio This studio on Prospect Boulevard offers adult classes in hip-hop, tap, contemporary, ballet and jazz. Contemporary is the one you’ll want for dancing to pop or rock music. Classes are held on various days and range from a half hour to 75 minutes. Most classes are based on a 32-week season and start at roughly $70 per session.
Dance Unlimited This studio on South Jefferson Street offers adult classes in tap, ballet, jazz and hip hop. Classes typically run a half hour to one hour and are held in the evenings. Monthly payments range from $65 to $90. Total class time ranges from as little as two hours to nine hours or more. You can stop when you’ve met your goals.
Elite Feet This studio on East Fourth Street offers adult classes in hip-hop and tap over six-week sessions. The adult classes are designed to provide a fun, safe space for adults to learn dance while also getting exercise. Prices range from $60 per month for half-hour classes to $80 per month for 90-minute classes. A full class schedule spans 32 weeks.
Ballroom Dance of Frederick This studio on Grove Road specializes in ballroom dancing’s two styles: American and International. American style is both social and competitive. International style is more focused on competition but can also be enjoyed socially. They offer a structured dance experience that moves through levels from basic to very advanced. They also

Fred Astaire Dance Studios This studio on Pegasus Court near the Westview Promenade shopping center is the one my wife and I patronized and the one I recommend. They are the most complete and customized studio. They tailor their offerings to your needs and goals. They offer adults-only classes and one-on-one instruction in wedding and ballroom dances, including foxtrot, waltz, tango, salsa, merengue, hustle, swing, cha cha, rhumba, samba and jive. They also offer competitive dance events and their own dance parties. Take advantage of the introductory offer of $50 per couple for two lessons. Afterwards, one-hour sessions run you about $100 per session, but you can stop at any time.

The unseen sexuality of seniors

‘It’s not over until it’s over’ BY ALFRED LUBRANO THE PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER
N
ow that the nation has met Gerry Turner, the septuagenarian stud and star of ABC’s “The Golden Bachelor,” the idea of older Americans hooking up is percolating in everyday discourse. You might not like thinking of grandma going out on the town, but some flames blaze on, constant as a pilot light. “Seeing older people on TV demonstrating interest in others, along with sexual desire, shows that we don’t change much as we age,” said Ilene Warner-Maron, a professor in the department of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. “If you want to ride a bike and you still can, who says you’re too old? In life, there’s no such thing as a dirty old man or woman.” When younger people think of older people having sex, they often picture their parents, a difficult scenario to contemplate, Warner-Maron acknowledged. She added, “A person said to me, ‘Older people having sex is disgusting.’ “I asked him, ‘At what age would you stop having sex?’ ‘Oh, never,’ he said. “And that’s the answer.” With his thick hair, subtle Midwestern magnetism, and insouciant sporting of “ear candy” — elder-speak for his two hearing aids — Turner, a 72-year-old grandfather and widower, gifts America by conveying the message that romance at

persisted through the decades: “I’ve gone on a few dates since my husband of 36 years died five years ago. I haven’t met anybody who wants relationships. They just want sex. Men are still the same.” She meets men online or at the senior center at the KleinLife community center in Northeast Philadelphia. A lover of aerobics and travel, Lyons-DiCamillo says she’s a doer but that many guys can be absolute
sluggards. “They aren’t available because they need to watch Eagles games,” said the mother of two and grandmother of five. “Or, you do manage to go out with someone and try to connect, but then they ghost you. “It gets lonely.” Active older people like Lyons-DiCamillo are quite common, said Allen Glicksman, a social gerontologist and researcher at New-
Courtland, an agency headquartered in Philadelphia’s Germantown neighborhood that helps seniors find housing and health care. “For certain people, there’s sometimes risk in activities,” he said. “But some would rather die having fun than sit for 20 years.” Because there are 124 elderly women aged 65 to 84 for every 100 similarly aged men (over 84, it’s 176 to 100), federal figures show, women understand it can be difficult to find partners. In Philadelphia, it’s even harder, where there are 90,000 more women than men, the widest gender gap among American big cities. Glicksman said a TV program like “The Golden Bachelor” — with 22 women between ages 60 and 75 competing for Gerry’s love — goes a long way toward battling ageism, “which dictates all seniors are frail.” “Or that older sex is cringeworthy. Or rare.”
There are, in fact, retirement homes in Philadelphia resembling “college dorms, with people hopping in and out of each other’s apartments at night,” Warner-Maron said. One result of unrestrained activity such as that, experts say, is that half of all adults living with HIV are over 50. “I started doing research in HIV in older adults, but nobody was interested,” Warner-Maron said. “I was told: ‘Sex and older people. Why would anyone bother studying that?’”
Chemistry
“
I know that when younger people see us, they think we cut off all desire. We don’t. Marcie Lyons-DiCamillo
“If the chemistry is there, that feeling is not much of a change from when you’re younger,” said Laurenzi, a mother of two with four grandchildren. She used to work in a hospital office. With the wisdom that age bestows, Laurenzi said she can quickly size up a man’s personality and decide whether she and he are simpatico. “When I notice something I don’t care for, I dismiss him — gently. If I don’t have a ring, I don’t have to stick around.”
Alcira Laurenzi, 79, of Center City, said she and her husband had enjoyed “45 beautiful years of marriage, until a friend liked what I had and took it away from me. I got divorced.” Lately, she’s been finding datable men online or at the Philadelphia Senior Center in Center City, part Cloud nine of NewCourtland. Sandy Levin, 79, of Northeast Phil-
adelphia, has her own philosophy: “It’s better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all.” Her husband of 44 years died 12 years ago. Then Levin was with a man for more than a decade who moved to Boston. After that, she dated a man with whom she’d host trivia games in various nursing homes. He died recently. A former high school and college administrator, Levin, the mother of one, said her relationships fostered “indescribable feelings when you’re on cloud nine. It’s just wonderful.” Detailing intimacy at an older age, she said, “For most men, Viagra was heaven-sent. And, not to diminish the sex act for a woman, but having a man just hold and kiss you makes you feel special. You feel vital, seeing someone look at you like you’re a beautiful, young woman. And I’ve learned something important over time: It’s not over until it’s over.”

The little black lentil is the power player in this satisfying lasagna BY JOE YONAN THE WASHINGTON POST
H
ere’s a coincidence for you — or is it? The last time I wrote about cookbook author Nik Sharma, it was when I loved a recipe from his previous book, “The Flavor Equation,” for dal makhani, India’s luxuriously silky black lentil stew. This time, the recipe from his latest book, the gorgeous “Veg-table,” that sparked my interest is for Lentil Lasagna, which brings warming spices — and a decidedly nontraditional pulse — to the Italian classic. When I got him on a Zoom call to discuss it, one of the first things I pointed out was that, yet again, I had picked a recipe from him that features one Tom McCorkle for The Washington Post/food styling by Gina Nistico for The Washington Post of my favorite legumes. Obviously, that says more about me and my long-standing Lentil lasagna brings warming spices and a nontraditional pulse to a classic dish. bean obsession than it does about him. a few seconds to get a chunky sauce, or longer to get it smooth, if you’d like. (Alternatively, you can transfer the mixture to a blender or food processor, pulse or puree, and return the sauce to the pot.) Stir in the lentils. In a small bowl, mix the mozzarella and parmesan cheeses until combined. Line the base of the greased baking pan with enough sheets of pasta to cover in a single layer. Cover the pasta with 1 1/2 cups of the sauce and spread evenly. Sprinkle about 3/4 cup of the cheese mixture on top, and add another layer of pasta. Repeat the sequence three more times, layering sauce and cheese on the pasta. The final layer should be covered with the sauce and cheese. Cover the dish tightly with foil, and set the baking pan on a large sheet pan to catch any drips. Bake for 35 to 45 minutes, or until the cheese is melted, the sauce is bubbling, and the pasta layers are all cooked. Carefully remove the foil, turn on the broiler, and broil for 2 to 3 minutes, or until the cheese begins to bubble and lightly brown. Watch carefully so the cheese does not burn. Remove from the oven and let cool for at least 10 minutes before slicing and serving warm. Substitutions: No Aleppo-style chile flakes? Use Urfa, Morash, crushed red pepper flakes, or a combination of mostly sweet paprika with a pinch of cayenne. Crushed tomatoes; Diced tomatoes or tomato puree. Garam masala; Curry powder. Mozzarella ; Vegan mozzarella-style shreds, such as Daiya brand. Parmesan; Vegan parmesan cheese, such as Violife brand, or nutritional yeast.

SUDOKU
Here’s How It Works:
Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
