Local galleries draw visitors to the Texas Hill Country The art galleries of Fredericksburg, Texas, host a monthly event: First Friday Art Walk. Participating galleries fly Art Walk flags and remain open until 8 p.m. Most galleries serve food and local wine. Musicians may also be part of the mix. Because the galleries want to support a thriving art market in Fredericksburg, they refer customers between each other, encouraging patrons to check out what’s next door or down the street. Many galleries turn First Friday Art Walk into a

weekend event, inviting featured artists to stick around for further talks or demonstrations. In October 2018, Nocona Burgess, great-great-grandson of Chief Quanah Parker, came to Koch Gallery and gave two lectures about the Comanche. More details about each month’s events can be found in the Fredericksburg Standard-Radio Post, at gallery websites and at First Friday Art Walk’s website, www.ffaw.com. The Fredericksburg galleries invite everyone to come early, stay late and enjoy art.

AW Studio Gallery

311 East San Antonio Street 832-623-8352 awstudiogallery.com Open “when I’m here or by appointment.” Alan Wilcox opened a working studio gallery in 2017. His artist statement reads, “I am just Alan, and I like to paint.” Wilcox took up painting eight years ago. He has also worked in sculpture, and his mother is an accomplished artist. After a heart attack he turned back to painting, and the art overtook his living room. Now, those paintings are spread throughout a house built in 1941, one block off Main Street, with an extensive deck beside Barons Creek. “The whole property is just so peaceful. It has this wonderful karma that’s hard to explain,” Wilcox said.

One room of the house is his studio, and in it hang paintings by John Austin Hanna, Becky Joy, Doug Prine and Jason Rich that serve as inspiration. “This room is an art-lover’s dream. It’s the perfect place to paint,” he said. The studio has no set hours — when Wilcox is there, the door is open. It’s not uncommon to find his newest paintings drying. A few estate pieces are also on display. For First Friday Art Walk, Wilcox collaborates with his wife, Rhonda, who started Fredericksburg Trade Days.

Artisans – A Texas Gallery

Owner Patricia Karr prides herself on the gallery’s “Texas-friendly atmosphere.” She defines fine craft as “handmade work of various media, but it’s the highest level of quality,” she said. “When people think of art, they think of painting. But fine craft is another category of art.” The gallery includes ceramics, fine furnishings, wood turnings, sculpture, jewelry, mosaics, glass, functional pottery and kinetic outdoor art along with paintings. The art may be decorative or functional.

The Karrs have been collecting art for more than 25 years and try to replicate the welcoming atmosphere they have enjoyed in other galleries. Behind every piece of art at Artisans is a talented, experienced, hardworking artist with a unique story to tell through their creations. Artisans carries art in a wide price range, appealing to both the first-time art buyer and the collector. “Our big thing is supporting local artists here. Everybody’s from Texas,” Karr said. Carriage House Gallery of Artists

Located in the heart of downtown Boerne, Carriage House Gallery of Artists is housed inside a stone cottage, shaded by burgundy awnings and accented by window boxes filled with bright flowers. In 2017 and 2018 readers of “The Boerne Star” voted it Best of the Best. Founded in 2003, the artist-owned gallery has 12 professional artists and features fine art in a wide

variety of styles, subjects and media, including oil paintings, pastels, photography, encaustics, cold wax, scratchboard and watercolor. In addition, art patrons will find fused glass, pottery and sculpture. The gallery’s artists participate in events throughout the year, including the Second Saturday Art Beat, held from 4-8 p.m. The monthly event includes snacks, wine, live music and artist talks.

Donald Darst, Grey Forest and Helotes

Donald Darst is known for his landscapes that evoke a mood and tell a story. “A veteran with PTSD told me he’d sit in his easy chair and look at a painting of mine, and it was totally calming for him,” he said. Darst won a Best Associate Honorable Mention at the 27th Annual National Juried Exhibition of Oil Painters of America in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, for “The Bird Scoop,” one of a series of his paintings featuring Native American pottery and baskets. Darst works from his studio, located off the winding roads of Grey Forest, between Boerne and Helotes.

He also teaches classes, especially to students new to art. In February 2019, Darst will open a gallery in Old Town Helotes that will represent about 30 artists and feature studio and classroom space. “The goal is promotion of the arts,” he said. “It will be fine art and fun art in a variety of styles, with a variety of price points.” Darst’s own art can be viewed at Carriage House Gallery of Artists, in Boerne, and he will be part of Boerne Professional Artists’ Parade of Artists in April.

Die Künstler von Fredericksburg means “The Artists of Fredericksburg.” Founded in 1993, the art group numbers about 100 members. Die Künstler’s purpose is to promote art appreciation and education in Fredericksburg and the Texas Hill Country for artists at every level of experience. Although Die Künstler does not have its own gallery space, it provides many local exhibiting opportunities for members.

Die Künstler meets at 6 p.m. on the first Thursday of the month at Hill Country University Center, with live demonstrations by noted artists. Meetings are free and open to the public. The second weekend in November, Die Künstler holds its Fine Art Show and Sale, featuring more than 300 original works in a variety of media and styles. This year’s free event will take place Nov. 8-10 at historic St. Joseph’s Halle.

Fredericksburg Art Guild & Gallery

308 East Austin Street 830-997-4949 www.fredericksburgartguild.org Open Wednesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Fredericksburg Art Guild & Gallery is a nonprofit organization founded more than 40 years ago by artist John McClusky to support arts in the Texas Hill Country. All members are Texas artists. Support for the Art Guild is provided by the Pedernales Creative Arts Alliance and the City of Fredericksburg’s Hotel Occupancy Tax. “In our minds, the guild and the gallery are meshed together, so there’s no difference,” said guild member Nan Henke. Currently, the guild has 24 members, who also serve as docents. Art shows rotate between the members.

During First Friday Art Walk, the gallery stays open until 8 p.m. and gives guild members the opportunity to put on an art show, perhaps for the first time. “It’s a huge learning experience, a training ground for artists,” Henke said. The guild also holds classes throughout the year. Truby Hardin teaches oil painting, and Henke teaches watercolor. In early 2019, the historic home where the guild is located will undergo renovation. During that time, the classes will continue at alternate locations. The refurbishment will also push the annual juried art show to later in the spring.

Fredericksburg’s art community has grown robustly in part due to Fredericksburg Artists’ School. Bill and Nancy Bush bring world-renowned professional artists to lead four and five-day workshops. Students come from around the country to participate and learn to solve problems in their painting, whether they are beginners or master artists. “Painting is really problem-solving,” said Bill Bush. “People want to take from these particular artists, and Fredericksburg is a desired destination.” Nancy Bush, a Master Signature Member of the American Impressionist Society, who shows in galleries around the country, teaches two classes a year for

the school. Bush is not an artist — he’s a CPA. More than 25 years ago on the way home from attending an art school in Santa Fe, Nancy turned to him and said they needed to start an art school. Which meant Bill needed to start an art school. “She made a deal that whatever did not involve putting paint on a canvas, I do,” he said. Nancy invited artists she knew to teach, and the school continues to add to its repertoire. All classes are held at Appretiare, 237 West Main Street, home of ISA-accredited appraiser Lee Ann Whatley.

Maggie and Gary Klenzing opened Gallery 330 in October 2017 to combine their passion for art and the community of Fredericksburg. They restored the historic August Itz building, where the gallery is located, along with two iconic nearby restaurants, Altdorf and Crossroads. The gallery specializes in contemporary realism and impres-

sionism. Gallery 330 is a proud participant in First Friday Art Walk and hosts a reception from 5-8 p.m. Featured artists who have attended previous events include painter Mallory Agerton, wildlife artist Jane Ingols, colorist Jamie Kirkland, sculptor Sherry Salari Sander and Western landscape painter C.S. The Good Art Company

Owner Mary Katherine Fickel curates a diverse collection of modern and traditional art, including heavytextured oils, abstracts and contemporary Western paintings. Fickel was raised in the gallery industry and after splitting time between Fredericksburg and Houston,

decided to put down roots here with her husband. “We felt this was a great town to be part of, in the art community,” she said. The gallery is located in the historic Schmidt-Dietz building and was featured in Texas Monthly’s August 2018 issue about small towns in an article titled, “Creative Spaces.” The Good Art Company is open every day and has an online gallery to promote its artists and help customers discover good art.

Intermezzo

2015 NE Loop 410, San Antonio (at Los Patios) www.intermezzogallery.com Wednesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. or by appointment. “Intermezzo” is the Italian word for intermission, a pause. “We’re a pause for beauty,” said owner Kathy Cody Gallaway of Intermezzo, a curated collection of fine art, gifts and Fair Trade products. “I’m committed to interdisciplinary work in the arts.” Intermezzo’s artwork comes mostly from the Texas Hill Country and includes painting, photography, pottery, jewelry, blown glass and more. Its gifts, such as wearable art and functional art,

bring color, beauty and light into a home or office. Fair Trade products come from nongovernmental agencies in Ethiopia, Guatemala, India and Mexico as well as from Thistle Farms in Tennessee, an organization that helps women who have been trafficked. Intermezzo has a close relationship with Hospice Ethiopia and Linking Lives, and 50 percent of the purchase price of items by these artisans goes directly to those organizations. Intermezzo moved to San Antonio in January 

J.E. Cauthen & Sons

414 East Main Street 830-992-3306 www.jecauthen.com Open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. When Jim and Brenda Cauthen decided to open a store in Fredericksburg, they asked a gallery-owner what the town lacked. “He said, ‘Some place for men to go,’” said Charlie Parcus, gallery manager at J.E. Cauthen & Sons. The Cauthens, high school sweethearts, took that advice and completely restored the historic KlothLudwig home. The establishment carries fine sporting arms, Western art and collectibles. The Cauthens travel extensively, purchasing European furniture and antiques along with Tiffany sterling and crystal. They also collect Western art from the 18th through 20th centuries, including work by Abigail Gutting and Bill Anton. “We’re all horse people at heart, so most of it is

based around the cowboy lifestyle, the romance of that,” said Parcus. The shop’s London-style gunroom carries collectible Winchester rifles and Colt revolvers as well as handmade shotguns from Italy and Great Britain and American long-range rifles. “It’s for those that love the sporting life,” Parcus said. “It’s the nicest store west of Charleston.” In March, representatives from Gunwerks, the Wyoming-based shooting system provider, will hold a reservation-only event at a local ranch. Because of the nature of the inventory, the store is kept locked at all times, but when visitors call, Parcus immediately opens the door.

She studied art under painter Charles Berkeley Normann at the Texas School of Fine Arts and earned a degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Texas at Austin. “I painted a bunch of Longhorns — that’s how I paid my tuition in school,” she said. Burley spent her career at NASA and even designed an organizational patch. After retirement, she focused on art — watercolor, oil and collage. She teaches Cut Ups Collage workshops about twice a month. “People say they can’t even draw a stick figure, but they walk away with a frameable collage,” she said.

Doing collage makes her feel close to her father, who was a petroleum engineer, especially when she incorporates colorful ads from his collection of “Architectural Digest” magazines. Burley’s collages have won Best In Show at juried exhibitions, and her photographs of New Mexico’s Ghost Ranch were featured in the organization’s 2017 and 2018 calendars. Her work can be viewed at Hill Country Furnishings in Canyon Lake and at popup galleries in the Texas Hill Country. This year she will be part of Wimberley Art and Soul Festival and Greater New Braunfels Fall Into Art Festival.

Kathy Weigand

830-342-7161 www.kathyweigand.com Kathy Weigand is a master photographer and artist and a native of Fredericksburg. Her paintings and photographs at Hill Country Images have been acquired by corporate marketers, small business advertisers, calendars, magazines, posters and a variety of publications. Weigand comes from a family with a wide and varied interest in art. “As a child, my grandmother introduced me to oil painting, and as a teenager, I dabbled,” she said. In 2015, Weigand was awarded an International

Master of Photography degree by the Professional Photographers of America (PPA). The PPA is the oldest and largest photography association in the United States. Weigand is drawn to all things Western, from Native American tipis to Hill Country landscapes and especially to wild horses. She’s been involved with filmmaker Ginger Kathrens and The Cloud Foundation, which works to preserve wild horses on public lands. Weigand donates part of the proceeds from her wild horse photos, taken in Wyoming and Montana since 2004, to the foundation.

Kerr Arts & Cultural Center

ent sizes and types of exhibitions. In February, “Revisiting the Armadillo Trail” will feature large-scale decorated armadillos as a fundraising event. 

In March and April, the “Gena Griffin Hill Country Youth Art Show” will display artwork by K-12 students, with the “Schreiner University Senior’s Show” taking place concurrently. This summer, the “14th Annual Southwest Gourd Fine Art Show” will return, and in late fall, the “20th Annual Texas Furniture Makers Show,” both among the center’s most popular. Kerr Arts also offers classes and workshops, usually once a quarter. “This fall, we tried a one-on-one series geared to-

ward the lay person instead of the professional artist. We’ve got a lot of retirees in the area, people who’ve maybe never picked up a paint brush, and they can work with an established artist,” said Program Director Al Zirkel. Affiliate groups also show at the gallery, including Hill Country Photography and Women Artists Working with Wood. Admission is always free, and the center operates a gift shop of unique handcrafted items made by its members.

Koch Gallery

Owner and collector Bert Koch carries a selection of more than 1,000 Native American paintings by Native American artists, including those affiliated with Apache, Cherokee, Choctaw, Kiowa, Navajo and Pueblo tribes in the Southwest and Oklahoma. The collection, more than 30 years in the making, includes vintage art from the 1920s. Each piece of art, whether contemporary or traditional, is labeled with the artist’s name and tribe. “These vintage artists made huge contributions to the art world during their lifetime,” Koch said. “These

are highly collectible pieces by Native American artists that are really hard to find.” Koch also seeks to purchase art collections and artwork — both contemporary and modern — from individuals and estates. In addition, the gallery sells rugs from Navajo and Zapotec artisans, Pueblo pottery, bronze sculpture by Margaret Drake and jewelry from highly recognized Native American artists, including Artie Yellowhorse, whose Navajo-influenced silver creations are paired with quality stones. Koch Gallery holds a reception from 5-8 p.m. for First Friday Art Walk.

marchmattingly@gmail.com 512-736-0473 www.marchmattingly.com March Mattingly uses emotional context to paint physical places, from the Texas Hill Country to the mountains of Norway, where she lived when her father was in the Air Force and worked for NATO. She also paints Longhorns, sea turtles, cacti and tropical birds, playing with expressionistic color and abstraction, using oils and acrylics. Mattingly believes art is a form of communication between artist and art-lover. “You’re putting into visual terms your perceptions of the world around you, and it does give a sense of joy when others are able to have some kind of connection to the natural world somehow through it,” she said.

Mattingly graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a bachelor of fine art degree in studio art. She also attended the Oslo International Summer School in Norway. In spring 2018, she was featured in a solo exhibition at the Dougherty Arts Center, Austin’s community arts venue. Early this year, she will be showing in a juried exhibition at Austin ArtSpace, managed by Austin Visual Arts Association. Her work can also be found at Solstice in Dripping Springs and at Port Aransas Art Center, and she will have an exhibition at Studio C in Corpus Christi.

Misha’s Attic

338 West Main Street (above Ranch Road Roasters) mishasattic@gmail.com Open daily, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mike Misha’s Attic is located in an intimate space featuring the work of artist, writer and native Texan Mike Raymer. The name Misha comes from Raymer’s early days at Navajo Grill, when a Russian co-worker gave him that nickname. The gallery is located above a local coffee shop, Ranch Road Roasters, and is open during the I’s hours, in addi-tion to staying open later for special evening events. Raymer’s art combines word and image. He captures the beauty of West Texas, New Mexico and Utah, work-ing in mixed media. He’s known for unusual ar-

tistic combinations, such as photography with canvas, acrylic with bone and glass, and handmade paper with words that weave images of the natural world. He enjoys collecting what he calls “life’s snippets and reframing them in fresh and bold contexts.” Raymer, a former consultant for “National Geographic,” is known for his photography. “I usually have a camera with me. CAA member and sculptor Jason Scull is the resident artist, working in a studio on the grounds. Just step on the porch and knock on the sliding glass door to say hello. The museum itself was the last structure designed by noted Texas architect O’Neil Ford. Outside the 14,000-square-foot building, the Masel S. Quinn Pavilion hosts outdoor events and education activities, overlooking the city of Kerrville. The Fred Fellows life-size bronze, “An Honest Day’s Work,” is the museum’s most-photographed item.

The permanent collection includes 150 sculptures and 250 paintings by artists working from the mid-20th century through today. Artifacts, including knives, guns and saddles, are also on display. A different regional artist rotates through a smaller gallery space each month. The interactive Journey West exhibition in the Children’s Gallery allows children to dress in period clothing, climb aboard a Conestoga wagon and experience a tipi. Authors — including James Michener, for “Texas,” and Larry McMurtry, for “Lonesome Dove” — have worked in the museum’s non-circulating research library, the Griff Carnes Research Center.

Debbie and Mike Wilson own River’s Edge, “The Jewel of Kerrville.” The gallery also offers custom framing, large-scale scanning and fine art printing. “We’re the best-kept secret in Kerrville because most of our clients are from out of town,” Debbie Wilson said. The gallery has a friendly, laid-back feel, with gallery dogs (all rescues) resting in their appointed spots. “I’m not trying to be an upper-end gallery. I want to be a middle-class gallery, where they walk in and the artwork is affordable,” Wilson said.

The 20,000-square-foot space currently has about 30 artists, including painters, sculptors and jewelry-makers as well as estate art. Wilson specializes in conservation of family heirlooms, priceless art and vintage photographs, especially using shadow boxes and museum-grade glass. Her favorite part of her job is the stories she hears as customers bring in valued heirlooms and trust River’s Edge to preserve them. “We try to save our customers as much money as possible but give them the art they deserve,” Wilson said.

The expanded gift gallery and laboratory sell comestibles, fragrances, skin care, candles and more — all handmade on-site by Varney using the homegrown herbs he’s been known for since 1985. Varney founded Fredericksburg Herb Farm and is the author of the award-winning book “Herbs.” He’s been featured on the Food Network for his knowledge and love of all things botanical. Ruby Lee Clark’s roots go back to the beginnings of Fredericksburg — her great-great-grandfather came over on the first boat. She always wanted to be an artist, but when she was growing up, art wasn’t even taught in the schools. But the town now embraces art, in part through through Die Künstler von Fredericksburg (or DK for short), which Clark helped establish 26 years ago. “I can remember before tourists really started coming to Fredericksburg, the hunters would come, and their wives were our tourists,” she said. Clark, who serves as DK’s board president, says Fredericksburg’s art scene began when John McClusky established an art group that became Fredericksburg Art Guild. Clark studied oil painting with McClusky for 24 years. “He encouraged us to paint what we know rather than to follow the market. He said you have to have a pitter-patter about something,” she said, recalling a local scene she was inspired to paint. “One time, I went to the Catholic cem-

etery when the bluebonnets were there, covering these really old children’s graves. They were pretty much abandoned. I thought, ‘No one’s bringing them flowers,’ and they were covered with bluebonnets.” DK grew out of a group of eight people from the guild who eventually wanted to explore other artistic media and methods. They contacted the Texas Commission on the Arts and created a nonprofit. DK keeps its dues low, just $30 per month. Its primary goal is education. “We help people get better all the time. Even if you’re good, you can always learn,” Clark said. From its first meetings, DK offered demonstrations by professional artists, including Charles Beckendorf, Mark Haworth and others. Sometimes it coordinates with a local gallery that is bringing in an artist for First Friday Art Walk. DK meets for two hours the first Thursday of every month at the Hill Country University Center, and any-

one can attend. It also maintains a library of about 500 art instruction videos that can be rented by members at no charge. The videos are also available for local high school art students. Looking to the future, Clark hopes to attract more young artists, which is one reason it donates art supplies each year to nearby Harper Independent School District.

One Sky at a Time Phil Bob Borman When Phil Bob Borman was working as a state trapper, a co-worker asked him what he wanted out of life. “I said, ‘I want a gal to say, I do; I want to hear, It’s a boy; and I want to paint clouds like John Constable,’” Borman said. But he did not take a straight path to reach that objective. “There’s a long way to the barn, and I took it,” he said. He’s had seasons working as a cowboy, a forest firefighter and a government trapper. He plays banjo, guitar, mandolin, violin and a mean harmonica, and he’s sung and played in all kinds of bands as well as at the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering. His paintings of skies are nationally acclaimed. “I want to paint God’s glory, one sky at a time,” he said. “I haven’t even scratched the paint on the tip of the iceberg in terms of exploring skies.” Borman bought his first piece of art at age 7, paying 25 cents at a flea market — a loan from his mother that he paid back with interest. At 14, after working a shift as a busboy, he and a friend stayed up all night talking, and Borman drew until dawn. “I told him, ‘I’m gonna be an artist,’” he said. After studying forestry at Stephen F. Austin State University, Borman transferred to Sul Ross State University, where he majored in animal science and fine art. He did the work for a master’s degree in fine art too, studying under Bob Hext but didn’t see a reason to bother with the GRE. At the time Borman focused on sculpture. He went to California to study with Mehl Lawson and took workshops with Cowboy Artists of America. He took a decade away from art to do fulltime ministry, including working as a pastor for the New Mexico Junior Rodeo Association. “Then the Lord said, ‘Start painting,’ and I said, ‘OK.’ It was a real short conversation,” he said. His first painting mentor was Michael Workman of Fredericksburg Artists’ School, where Borman now regularly teaches. “I’m privy to learn under these artists from all over the world and how they solve artistic

problems,” he said. “I go to a workshop, then I learn something, teach out of that, put it together and make a Phil Bob stew out of it.” Borman is relentless as he approaches his artistic passion, the skies. “Two words I never want to hear are ‘good enough.’ That’s the herald of mediocrity,” he said. “Your intent will always be seen. You can’t not communicate your intent.” Borman calls his wife, Deanna, a partner in his work, running the business side of art so he can paint and ease back into sculpture. “She’s got my six, which has increased my studio time exponentially,” he said. Borman has been featured in “Western Art & Architecture” and “Western Art Collector” and will appear in the January-February 2019 issue of “Art of the West.” His work can be found at both locations of The Legacy Gallery in Scottsdale, Arizona, and Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and at Lee Small Fine Art in Fort Worth. In Fredericksburg he is represented at InSight Gallery, where he will be part a two-person show, “Heaven and Nature Sing,” with Jhenna Quinn Lewis in May. Borman will teach a class on landscape painting at Fredericksburg Artists’ School April 22-26.
