FHS senior class makes donation to food pantry By Jessica Stuewe For the Fredericksburg High School Class of 2020, many of the plans they had leading up to graduation changed when they did not return to classes after Spring Break due to COVID-19. One of those plans was the yearly senior trip, where funds had been raised, for the class to spend one last fun day together. The senior class officers made the decision to donate the senior trip money of $10,850 to the Fredericksburg Food Pantry. “We wanted to keep it local,” senior class vice president Amy Dittmar said. “The Food Pantry can do a lot with the money that you give them. They can turn your $5 into much more because of the deals that they have with grocery stores.” Dittmar and the other class officers, Caitie Huff, Noah Downey, Sydney Holster, Emilia

Smajstrla, Ryan Davis and Chad Braden, felt that giving back to the community in its time of need was the best decision with what to do with the money they earned for the senior trip. “I’m just glad that our money will go to making people smile and easing the hardships people are facing right now,” Dittmar said. “Even though we cannot have our senior trip, it’s going to a good cause, and that makes me feel good.” According to Huff, who is the class co-president, the senior class raised a little over $11,000 for their senior trip for every senior class member to go to Six Flags. “We raised that money through working concession stands and selling programs, and our biggest fundraiser was prom last year,” Huff said. “Since we don’t get to have our senior trip this year, we had all this money, and

we wondered, ‘What could we do with it?’” The seniors could have donated the money for an item to the school like a park bench or purchased a keepsake item for each senior, but they felt that was not useful to the times that we are in right now. “I had the idea that we could donate the money to a charity or organization in the name of

A NOTE FROM THE PUBLISHER

2020 - A year interrupted By Ken Esten Cooke Standard-Radio Post editor

T

hose of us who are older likely don’t remember much about what was going on in the world when we graduated high school. But the Class of 2020 will for sure. We probably don’t remember much about our graduation ceremony either. But the Class of 2020 will. We don’t remember where our parents and loved ones who came to root for us were sitting in the audience. But the Class of 2020 will know that, except for two guests, theirs were watching it on a livestream.

All of us before the Class of 2020 took for granted most milestones, like graduation ceremonies, and even normal school activities, like sporting events and field trips. The Class of 2020 might feel shortchanged. And indeed, some were, having to miss out on most all of your spring semester activities, UIL contests, sports playoff runs or a possible trip to the state track or tennis meets. It’s not fair, but life won’t always be fair either. And graduates may come to notice that those whose life was shaped by adversity in some way end up stronger and more adaptable. It is said

“change is the only constant in life,” and the Class of 2020 has certainly had its fill of change, from being quarantined to suddenly having to take classes via Zoom and dealing with the disappointments of missing events and parties due to social distancing. For sure, the Class of 2020 will have members made stronger by these challenges and dealing with change. To look for that silver lining, these will help you deal with the inherent challenges in marriage, children, jobs, moves and new sets of friends. Another thing previous classes take for granted and don’t think

about is how much effort your school district put into being able to safely host your school year and graduation ceremony, even in an online, abbreviated or limited format. That is because the people who are in charge of your education really care about this Class of 2020. They are just as disappointed in the interruptions to this school year as students. To the Class of 2020, we join your families, schools and communities to wish you the best. This disappointment will not define your life, one still filled with blessings and opportunities. Go forth and conquer.
