About edVentures Fredericton Award-winning Instructors Top Facilities Over 130 Workshops et in one of the country’s most beautiful and creative communities, edVentures Fredericton is Atlantic Canada’s largest and most diverse vacation learning program in craft and culture.

The 2012 edVentures summer program features over 130 intensive, small-group five-day weekday and shorter weekend workshops. edVentures runs six weeks from July 9 to August 17. The edVentures program is located in gentle downtown Fredericton, where you’ll find the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design (NBCCD) in the heart of the Historic Garrison District, a National Historic Site. The college and its award-winning instructors offer almost 50 workshops in edVentures, a program coordinated by Fredericton Tourism. In addition to the NBCCD, our partners include the Beaverbrook Art Gallery, the University of New Brunswick College of Extended Learning, and Kings Landing Historical Settlement. Our summer program combines an easygoing and nurturing atmosphere, informal learning environment, top quality workshops, experienced and award-winning instructors and well-appointed and often historic facilities. Unless indicated otherwise, the workshops take place at the NBCCD. First-timers to long-timers - Whether you are a trying something for the first time or have quite a bit of experience and want to learn a new technique, edVentures has a selection of beginner and intermediate level workshops from which to choose. Come join in the fun. No experience necessary. We’ll weave that exceptional learning experience into a rich tapestry with easy-tomake connections to our friendly people and an after-hours schedule of our Cool Culture offerings, live weekly concerts and outdoor films.

Awaken your creativity. Refresh your senses. Revitalize yourself. edVentures workshops are taught by some of New Brunswick’s most recognized and award-winning artists and artisans. Many of our more than 50 instructors teach at the internationally-renowned New Brunswick College of Craft and Design (NBCCD), edVentures’ principal partner. Programs are available for learners 6 to 106, with most designed primarily for those 16 years and older. Children and youth workshops are also offered and coordinated to allow parents to participate in edVenture workshops, while their children safely enjoy their own age-appropriate programs. Workshops take place from 9 am - 12 noon and 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm, unless otherwise indicated. Lunch is on your own. Several unique restaurants are nearby. Don’t miss out on some great culinary experiences or grab a bite outdoors and enjoy a leisurely walk on The Green next to the beautiful St. John River. Whether you’re touching clay for the first time or mastering digital photography, edVentures instructors engage your mind and energize your creativity. Changing of the Guard Ceremony - With a flash of scarlet and a skirl of pipes, history comes to life! The Canadian Army was born in 1884 with the establishment of the Infantry School Corps, Company 'A' in Fredericton. Watch as period-dressed guards re-enact a drill ceremony to the beat of a piper and drummer. Location: Officers' Square - Historic Garrison District Outdoor Summer Concert Series - Sit back and unwind while you take in one of our free outdoor concerts featuring some of New Brunswick's top performers. Well, after spending two days with edVentures instructor Betty McCullough, wait to see what you can create on a canvas with some paint, a palette knife, a few different brushes, tossed in with a few somewhat secret materials. Learn how to paint a beautiful bouquet of purple lilacs on an 18 x 24 inch Gallery Canvas. Texture paste will be used to build up flowers and vase and to create a border. Participants will then enhance using metallic silver.

During this two-day workshop, participants will explore mixed-media techniques including wet and dry material, collage, prepared grounds, and co-active imagery to transform an old hard covered book into a personal work of art. Learn the basics of pencil and ink drawing with artist Lloyd Fitzgerald, who will start your training with important pencil grips, whole arm motion, shading, practicing the tonal bar and the effect of one tone on adjacent tones, and how to change these tones to best advantage. As the week progresses, students will learn how to apply abstract concepts and techniques to any image, thus giving the student a whole new range of options on how to enhance the final image. It won’t take long for you to catch on, and soon you’ll do simple objects and themes with still life and symmetrical designs. The instructor will encourage you through various stages. Take the handouts home and keep your pen and pencil moving.

Beeswax plus Pigment: Encaustic Painting for Beginners Instructor: Sarah Petite Date: July 14 & 15 Length: 2-days Level: All levels Workshop Fee: $140 (plus HST) Materials Fee: $20 Location: NBCCD It sits, molten and ready, in little cans on a hotplate. When it’s hot, it’s wet, and when it’s cold, it’s dry. This weekend workshop will introduce you to "encaustic", the intriguing paint medium made of beeswax and colour. With sawed-off paintbrushes and an array of simple tools, we'll paint, drip, melt, puddle, stamp, scratch, stencil and scrape to get a variety of effects. If you find that you're "hooked", we'll tell you how to outfit your own studio so you can carry on with it.

John will bring you to important historic properties in the downtown flat. His expertise and knowledge is sure to intrigue any history buff. Those enrolled in this four-day workshop led by artist Marcus Kingston will look at the fundamentals of drafting and drawing historic architecture. Marcus will lead various sessions on drafting and composing architectural drawings and free hand sketches of the urban landscape. Through sketching in the outdoors and from photos, participants will be sure to master their individual styles. Marcus's knowledge of sketching and improvising will ensure participants walk away with the basics of composing their very own urban landscapes.

Expand on your knowledge of egg tempera painting. In this three-day course there will be a brief overview of the relationship between egg yolk and egg tempera paints. Instructor William Forrestall will show you how to mix the paint and prepare a gesso hideskin glueboard panel. While this dries, you will prepare heavy stock paper for painting. This longer workshop will give you the opportunity for extra practice, with feedback from a professional painter. A tour of the Beaverbrook Art Gallery will encourage discussion of the artist’s original work. Outside still life painting may be included, weather permitting.

Faux Finishing Techniques Instructor: Jane Geurts Date: July 28 & 29 Length: 2-days Level: All Levels Workshop Fee: $140 (plus HST) Materials Fee: $35 Thinking of redecorating or transforming a piece of furniture or another home décor object? In this five-day workshop you will learn a variety of paint finishing techniques, from old and treasured to the contemporary. You will be shown how to explore introductory methods such as marbeling, glazing, and trompe l’oeil, as well as complex decorative and painting techniques. Some of the types of faux finishing techniques that will be covered are color washing, sponge painting, crackle painting, ragging, and rag rolling.

Graphite & Charcoal Drawing from Still Life Instructor: Sue Hooper Date: July 21 Length: 1-day Level: Beginner to Intermediate Workshop Fee: $70 (plus HST) Materials Fee: $5 This one-day workshop is designed for beginning and intermediate participants interested in developing strong drawing skills. The workshop will start off with some right brain exercises in contour drawing and then work from dark to light exploring composition and its value. Participants will then spend the day doing studies from still life working with line, shape and texture using graphite pencil and charcoal.

Introduction to Pastel Drawing & Acrylic Tinting Instructor: Lloyd Fitzgerald Date: July 16 - 20 Length: 5-days Level: Intermediate (It would be beneficial for participants to have taken Basics of Pencil Drawing). Workshop Fee: $295 (plus HST) Materials Fee: $30 Note: A materials list may be supplied instead of paying the materials fee. So you know the basics of drawing but haven’t tried pastels? Come broaden your drawing technique with this fiveday workshop. The first morning will be spent on experimenting with the pastels to acquire the feel for applying the chalk on paper and achieving different effects. Once the bare bones technique of applying the chalk is accomplished, participants will be introduced to colour mixing and blending. An exercise in exploring complementary colours will be added to your knowledge. Participants will learn the do’s and don’ts for enhancing black and white images with colour. As in the pencil drawing course, participants will learn how to apply pastel in abstract techniques to change the image in numerous ways with respect to composition, contrasting tonal values and colour juxtaposition. At mid-week, participants will be introduced to a unique experience; tinting on black and white images with acrylic paints. This technique was developed by Fitzgerald and goes far beyond the old practice of photo tinting resulting in an image that takes tinting to a whole new level. Bring along some meaningful photos and you may be able to create a one of a kind keepsake.

Marginalized art creation and theory that are found in many masters paintings will be touched on. This workshop embraces both a scientific understanding and intuitive play component of art and writing. Spontaneous drawings, paintings, and other forms of design and intuitive art making will be encouraged.

Games Unplugged: Build & Play the Classic Board Games Instructor: Sarah Petite Date: July 16 - 20 Length: 5-days Level: Beginner Age: 14+ Workshop Fee: $175 (plus HST) Materials Fee: $10 Long before Nintendo, there were nine men's morris, chess and pachisi (with cowrie shells for dice)! In this week of games, we'll look at their long history and evolution, from the archeological dig to today, see how they're different from or like each other, even fit them into families. Then the fun begins - we'll construct some of them using simple craft materials, pair up and get into the strategy and tactics. We'll try out race, combat, mancala, and tic tac toe style games. Then we'll wind up the week with some tournaments!

Instructor: Gladys Neilsen Date: July 14 Length: 1-day Level: Beginner Workshop Fee: $70 (plus HST) Materials Fee: $45 Note: All supplies will be provided, however, participants may certainly bring their own ‘rock seat’ for their sculpture to ‘sit’ on as well as a special piece of lace or something that they wish to incorporate into the finished (outdoor) artwork. It is recommended that participants not wear their ‘Sunday best’ and bring along an apron. This one-day workshop offers the participant a chance to discover the artist within by creating a one-of-a-kind, weather resistant, environment friendly work of art. The day begins by creating a wire armature wrapped with tinfoil. This is wrapped (mummyfied) with t-shirt fabric dipped in a fabric hardener which is a water based, non toxic substance. The lunch break allows the form to set up so after lunch it can be "dressed". Next, the participant will use their imagination to bring the form to life as only they can envision. Samples will be available for inspiration. Everyone is to bring a healthy imagination and a smile to prepare for a fun experience.

Using plasticine, participants will begin by sculpting their own puppet head. They will then create the 'skin' of their puppet with layers of cheese cloth. On the second day of the workshop, participants will have the chance to decorate their puppet by completing its face, adding arms, a head handle, and developing its costume. Participants will leave the workshop with their own unique puppet and the knowledge of how to make more at home.

Would you like to delve into some of Fredericton’s unique structures that are central to the cultural history of Canada? Early settlers spent as much time processing flax as they did wool. They used the linen cloth for clothing and tea towels. The expression ‘flaxen beauty’ comes from the flax plant; the blue blossoms represent blue eyes and the combed out flax look very much like a young lady’s blond locks. In this half-day workshop, you will learn the process of rippling, retting, braking, scutching, hackling, spinning, and weaving. It takes about a year to process from flax plant to cloth, but it won’t take you that long to learn.

herself badly so her mother made a temporary scab using flour to stop the bleeding. Mrs. Wright sat her baby in a bath with cornstarch to relieve diaper rash. This half-day workshop with the settlement’s medicine lady will give you a wealth of knowledge. Using common, household ingredients, herbs from the garden, or native plants growing along the roadways, you will make salves, poultices, and teas, sure to cure the ailments of any family.

Open Hearth Baking Date: July 28 Level: Beginner Time: 1:00 pm - 4:00pm Length: 1/2 day Workshop Fee: $35 (plus HST) Materials Fee: N/A Location: KLHS You’ve been told you have company coming for dinner – in the 19th century that meant a noon meal with dessert. Your only means of baking gingerbread is the fireplace and several cast iron pots. In this half-day workshop, you will learn to bake using both a wall oven in your fireplace and a Dutch oven. If you’ve got the right amount of coals under, and on top of the Dutch oven, your cake will bake in no time. You have no timer, but you can check your cake with a piece of straw to see if it’s done.

In the 19th century, fireplaces were the only form of heat and often died down during the night. When your wool skirts or aprons developed holes in them, you never threw them out. Cloth of any kind was highly valued because it took a lot of time and effort to make it. In this half-day workshop, you will learn the tools and techniques used to hook rugs and work on a reproduction rug with Kings Landing staff. For braided rugs you will sew strips of cloth into long lengths, braid them, then shape them into oval, circular, or rectangular rugs.

See how the ladies of 19th century New Brunswick produced their own clothing from the resources around them. If you’re an animal lover, then enjoy a visit with the Cotswald sheep and compare their wool to that of other breeds on site. If your hands are dry, you can pet the sheep and take advantage of the lanolin.

It’s time for a quilting bee. This event was about more than the production of bed coverings, it was a chance for community women to get together and socialize. In this half-day workshop, an experienced quilter will teach you the history of quilting and show you artifact quilts displayed at Kings Landing. You will discuss how to set up and quilt a typical bed covering. Then try your hand at the Nine Patch Star pillow-top that you can take home. This two-day workshop will take you through a general understanding of woven cloth and discuss a variety of yarn qualities. Participants will design and create a bag and learn everything from how to make a template to choosing the colours. Creativity is all you need with no sewing skills required. Whether you make a shoe bag for work or a small gift bag, you will leave this workshop with a fun and impressive project. Off-Loom Weaving II: Custom Bags to Designer Berets Instructor: Bronwyn Gallagher Date: August 15 - 17 Length: 3-days Level: Beginner Workshop fee: $180 (plus HST) Materials Fee: $40 Design and create hand woven items without the use of a floor loom. In this three-day workshop, participants will learn more about woven cloth and discuss a variety of yarn and the qualities of each. Without the constrictions of a classic floor loom, the techniques that will be taught have few creative limits resulting in endless possibilities. From custom bags to designer berets, participants will learn to make their own custom templates to weave ready to use projects with no sewing required. This workshop may be combined with Off-Loom Weaving Part I for the fee of $295 (+HST) plus materials if indicated at the time of registration.

Overshot Weaving Instructor: Jacqueline Bourque Date: July 30 – August 3 Length: 5-days Level: Beginner to Intermediate Workshop Fee: $395 (plus HST) Materials Fee: $15 Note: Some previous weaving experience would be helpful and being comfortable using a computer is

essential. The materials fee covers the basic materials for a table runner. Those that wish to upgrade their yarns or make a larger size table runner may do so and pay a slightly higher fee when choosing materials on the first day of the workshop. Overshot is a traditional weaving technique that was well known in Atlantic Canada. Using two shuttles and two different kinds of yarn at the same time, a weaver can create beautiful patterns. Even more exciting is the ability to create unique patterns on a computer using names or phrases. In this five-day workshop, you will learn the basics of overshot and then design and weave your own unique table runner pattern on a floor loom. The runner would be between 12 and 18 inches wide and 3 to 6 feet long depending on previous weaving experience.

Rug Hooking: Hook & Punch Instructor: Doris Norman Date: July 25 - 27 Length: 3-days Level: Intermediate Workshop fee: $180 (plus HST) Materials Fee: $60 Note: Knowledge of shading is not required, however, participants must already know how to hook. Material fees may be reduced for participants who choose to work from their own pattern and materials. This must be prearranged at the time of registration. Participants may bring along their own hook and frame, however, they are available for free loan for the duration of the workshop if indicated at the time of registration. Frames ($35), regular hooks ($12) and punch hook ($36) are also available for purchase from the instructor. This fun three-day workshop will feature regular rug hooking using wool flannel and punch needle hooking using yarn. Combined, they will create a different, textured look to a realistic flower design. The project may be incorporated into finished items, such as the side of a purse or bag, wall hanging, chair seat or as a table top piece. Embellishments may be added to make the project as formal or funky as you wish. Makes a great gift for you or someone you love.

Rug Hooking: Shading for Beginners Instructor: Doris Norman Date: July 23 & 24 Length: 2-days Level: Beginner Workshop fee: $140 (plus HST) Materials Fee: $60 Note: Participants may bring along their own hook and frame; however, they are available for free loan for the duration of the workshop if indicated at the time of registration. This two-day workshop will provide an introduction to the art of rug hooking shaded flowers; an opportunity to learn shading of a realistic flower and leaf in the traditional manner. The different shading techniques of finger, feather, and mock will help participants create a decorative piece for home or clothing. The pattern will be on a piece of 20" x 20" linen with a 15" design. Six to eight values of dark, medium, and light dorr wool flannel or yarn will be used to help determine the order of hooking, light source. Instruction sheets will be provided.

What the Heck is a Warp?: Weaving on Small Looms Instructor: Kimberly Bent Date: July 28 & 29 Length: 2-days Level: Beginner+ Workshop Fee: $140 (plus HST) Materials Fee: $20 Location: Beaverbrook Art Gallery In this two-day workshop participants will understand the basics of weaving by using two types of loom - the ultimate weaving machine. With a tapestry loom you will create your own bookmark or small wall hanging. During this process, participants will learn about the basic structure of weaving. Armed with this knowledge and an array of different yarns, you will move to a table loom. Here, you will create warp and weft. You will learn all about the mysterious workings of a loom and how to operate it to create many variations of woven fabric. By the end of the weekend, you will have a sample of your own handmade fabric. You can then transform this handmade fabric into a small bag, a card front, or a patch for your favourite jeans.

Pinhole photography is one of the oldest and most basic forms of photography. In this oneday workshop with professional photographer Drew Gilbert, you will learn how cameras work and how to build your own pinhole camera. You will see how pinholes create softer images with greater depth of field. Part of this workshop will involve working in the darkroom, as well as learning how to make a camera obscura by turning a room into a giant camera.

Your Instructors Austin, Tracy Tracy Austin is a Fredericton native and a New Brunswick College of Craft and Design (NBCCD) alumni who graduated in 2007 from the fashion design studio. She now works as the fashion studio technician for NBCCD and as a freelance artist, working primarily in miniature clothing for ball jointed dolls and illustration. Tracy is inspired by fantasy, steampunk, and botanical themes, all of which can be seen in her work.

Bourque, Jacqueline Jacqueline Bourque is a graduate of the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design, where she is a Studio Technician, and has been a fibre artist for many years. Primarily a weaver, Bourque has expanded her fibre interests to include felting, dyeing, and spinning. She is a juried member of the New Brunswick Crafts Council.

Bastin, Elizabeth Elizabeth Bastin has almost 25 years experience in rug hooking. She is a member of numerous rug hooking organizations, such as the Rug Hooking Guild of NS, the Heritage Rug Hooking Guild, Evening Matters, and Cathedral Matters, and the Fibre Artist’s Guild of Fredericton. In 1998, Bastin became a certified instructor through the Rug Hooking Guild of NS and has taught courses across the Maritimes. She likes to teach beginners because once they try it, they’re usually ‘hooked’. She enjoys sharing her knowledge with interested persons and especially enjoys new hookers becoming engaged in the process of rug hooking.

Clavette, Brune D. Brune Clavette D.Ac.,RMT, ADS, nd, has been in a private clinical practice since 1986, specializing in Traditional Chinese Acupuncture, Massage and CranioSacral Therapies. Qi Gong has been part of her practice since 1995. Brune Clavette has taught numerous QiGong classes and has teaching experience with Massage Therapy and CranioSacral Therapy. In 2007 Brune began work as an Addiction Detox Specialist being a facilitating consultant for the NB Department of Public Health. Brune is currently involved in a two year medical Qigong study with a group of 50 Acupuncturists from Quebec.

Beckley, Jen Jennifer Beckley teaches drawing, painting, and design for the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design and the University of New Brunswick. She also teaches workshops throughout the province. Her current work is an exploration of time as limit and emphasizes local culture. She holds an MFA in Painting and Drawing from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Bent, Kimberly Kimberly Bent uses a small loom to create big ideas. Even as a child her curiosity was caught up in the maze of strings and yarns, which were always around her. Her imagination encouraged her to take a weaving course at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design. Since that first formal introduction Kim has practiced her craft using trial and error to develop her one-of-a- kind scarves and shawls on a small 22" table loom. Kim plays with colour, texture and different fibres to create wonderful new designs. Let her enthusiasm help you learn to weave.

Close, Joanna Joanna studied textiles at NSCAD University in Halifax Nova Scotia, completing her Bachelor of Fine Arts with a Major in Textiles in 2004. She started her professional art practice in 2004 and completed a Master of Arts degree in Textile and Fibre Art at the Winchester School of Art in the United Kingdom in 2006. Since that time she has lived and made artwork in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Yukon Territory. Joanna now teaches at NSCAD University in the Textiles Department. Along with maintaining her art practice, she also teaches workshops around the Maritimes. Joanna’s work involves exploring landscape images through textiles and drawing. Using rural spaces between urban centres as inspiration, Joanna mainly uses dyeing, weaving, screen printing, stitching and pen and ink in her work. Much of her work addresses the landscape of southern New Brunswick, where she is from and visits often. She currently lives in Halifax Nova Scotia. Her work is shown and sold in galleries, shops, craft fairs and online (www.joannaclose.com).

Demerson, Liz Liz Demerson, is an instructor at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design, teaching Design and Pottery. She has been a ceramic artist since 2003 and a certified teacher since 2009. Liz sells her work to stores around the Maritime Provinces and locally at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery shop.

Cole, Bobbie Bobbie Cole, whose background is in journalism and business, is currently focussing on the final draft of her full-length memoir: She Does Not Fear the Snow, a transformational journey to faith. She has had a number of short stories published and has received grants and awards for her creative writing in her native U.K. She holds a postgraduate diploma in Creative Writing from University of London’s Goldsmiths College and a Certificate in Novel Writing from City University, London. She has also received mentoring from the Humber School for Writers, Ontario. Her art studies include graphic design and textiles in London and at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design.

Fitzgerald, Lloyd Lloyd Fitzgerald has been a professional artist for about 40 years. Alex Colville saw some of Fitzgerald’s early work and suggested that he contact the Dominion Gallery in Montreal. They exhibited his work there for 24 years. He also exhibited in Lucerne, Switzerland. He is currently represented by Brison in Toronto and is looking to exhibit his work in New York. Lloyd Fitzgerald’s work can be found in public and private collections in North America, Europe, and the Far East.

Colwell, Chris Ceramist Chris Colwell graduated with honours from the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design, and operated his own pottery studio for 11 years. He has taught pottery privately, in workshops. and at the university level. His awardwinning work is held in private collections across the continent. He enjoys the ancient and exciting process of Raku.

Forrestall, William William Forrestall has a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Mount Allison University and continues to paint full time. He has exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions in the Maritimes and Ontario. He and his father, Tom Forrestall, share a fascination for egg tempera, but their work carries no other similarity. Forrestall’s craft combines the natural beauty of flowers in bloom with the austerity of forgotten objects, both animate and inanimate.

Cooper, Kristyn Kristyn Cooper graduated with Distinction from the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design where she majored in the Jewellery/Metal Arts Studio. Kristyn has received numerous awards including “The Beaverbrook Art Gallery Tuition Scholarship” (2007) and “The New Brunswick Crafts Foundation INC Award for Excellence in Design” (2007). Her work has appeared in the Metal Arts Guild of Canada publication and she is a member of the New Brunswick Craft Council and the Metal Arts Guild of Canada. She is presently the full time Technician for NBCCD’s Metal Arts Studio where she also teaches noncredit night courses.

Gallagher, Bronwyn Fibre artist Bronwyn Gallagher, a recent graduate of the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design, loves creating things and has a passion for weaving. Gallagher was selected as New Brunswick's winner of the 2009 Bank of Montreal national competition for graduating students. Gallagher also received the recipient of the 2010 Nel Oudemans Award as selected by the Strathbutler jury for her work in differential shrinkage, in which the wool portion of the fabric is shrunk while the silk remains the same. Gallagher also received an Arts NB Creation Grant for his work in this area.

Cull, Jasmine Professional basket maker Jasmine Cull has a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. For the past 10 years, she has been an instructor at the Fibre Arts Studio at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design. She is also a juried member of the New Brunswick Craft Council and the Craft Council of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Gallagher, Trudy Jewellery designer Trudy Gallagher specializes in custom designed, hand built jewellery created specifically for and with individual clients by inviting the client's participation in the design process. She is the proprietor of Bejewel, a custom design jewellery studio and gallery in Fredericton. Bejewel was chosen as one of four NB companies to represent New Brunswick at the 2010 Olympics and was one of 26 Canadian artisan studios to represent Canada at the Philadelphia Museum’s Annual Show and Sale during the 2007 Year of Craft. Trudy has hosted a television show called Fashion-East-Ah for several years. She also teaches Jewellery/Metal Arts at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design.

Guevara, Maria Maria Guevara holds a Masters degree in Archaeology and a Degree in Conservation and Restoration of Mobile Properties from the National School of Conservation, Restoration and Museology in Mexico City. As a Professor at the National School she has developed and taught Conservation and Restoration of Ancient Ceramics and Conservation of Archeological Objects courses for undergraduate students. She has been a Guest Professor of Archaeological Conservation at the University of Iowa in the United States. She has published many articles and a book in conservation of olmec ceramics from Mexico. Maria has also carried out research in petrography analysis as well as nuclear technologies relative to conservation.

Geurts, Jane With a Diploma in Creative Art and Design, and MED, Jane Geurts has been Studio Head of the Design Studio of the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design since 1982. She has lectured internationally and shown her work across North America and the Netherlands. As a freelance artist and designer, she has displayed her work in both group and solo exhibitions, and received various commissions. Geurts combines paint and mixed media techniques and has designed, taught, and facilitated courses in the areas of mixed media, 2D and 3D design, painting, and drawing.

Hooper, Sue Sue Hooper graduated from the Georgian College in Barrie, Ontario and worked as an artist and designer for the past 30 years. Hooper has worked with the healing power of art and currently works part time as a teacher and manager of Art at Hooper Studios in Hampton, New Brunswick. Hooper has travelled the world, leaving her with a vast assortment of images and emotions relative to diverse people and cultures. When she established the organization SUMO, she hand painted original designs on cotton clothing. She was selected by Jean Bradbury of Oregon to join a team of artists who established Patchwork Planet, a women’s cooperative, in Safi, Jordan.

Gilbert, Drew Drew Gilbert is a multidisciplinary researcher / designer who teaches photography at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design. His specialties are handmade pinhole cameras and camera obscura installations, which have captivated participants during his public lectures and workshops. An archaeologist by training, Drew’s academic interests include prehistoric archaeological research in New Brunswick, with an emphasis on stone tools and archery. Drew is an expert in scientific photography, and has taught several workshops at the University of New Brunswick.

Kennedy, Mary Mary Kennedy began taking lessons in Tai Chi over 15 years ago as a means to improve her focus and concentration, but she realized that there were many more advantages. Her overall health improved so much that she wanted to show others the benefits. After initial training, she advanced to instructor level in 1998 and began teaching. In 2005 she received official Certification from the International Wu Style Tai Chi Chuan Federation and is Deputy Chief Instructor at the Fredericton Academy. In addition to beginner, intermediate, and weapons classes at the Academy, Kennedy offers private and semi private to students of all ages.

Kings Landing Staff Kings Landing staff has taught the history and culture of 19th century New Brunswick for almost thirtyfive years. Many of the instructors have been on-site since opening; they specialize in everything from household skills and period trades, to the finest details of artifacts and architecture in colonial New Brunswick. Recognized as one of Canada ’s Top Attractions, the costumed staff of this living museum actually practice the daily tasks associated with 19th century living. Visitors across Canada, Europe, the Caribbean, and many of the United States have gone home with a vivid understanding of New Brunswick’s traditional way of living. Kingston, Marcus Marcus Kingston is an artist and graduate of Mount Allison's Bachelor of Fine Arts program. Marcus moved to Fredericton where he fell in love with the architecture of the capital city. He now practices art and teaches for a living. The beauty of Fredericton and its historic properties are often the focus of his work. Marcus brings a fresh perspective and modern look to Fredericton’s historic architecture and architectural movements. Lavigne, Maurice Maurice Lavigne, BA, RMT, D.Ac, Qi, has been studying various aspects of universal energy (Qi in Chinese – Ki in Japanese) via the martial and healing arts for over 35 years. Maurice was first introduced to Qi Gong in 1996 during a workshop given in Fredericton, NB, by Master Yap Soon-Yeong of Malaysia. Maurice continued his training for six years with former Master Weizhao Wu of Toronto, Ontario. He is now a student of Grand Master T. K. Shih of Conneticut, USA. Over the last 14 years, Maurice has received Certification in several styles of Qi Gong as well as Certification as a Qi Healer. He has taught Qi Gong to a number of New Brunswick government Departments, and continues to teach classes and workshops in Aikido and Qi Gong.

Leroux, John John Leroux has worked since 1995 in architectural firms in Toronto, Atlanta and at home here in Fredericton. He has won many awards for both architectural and public art projects, and has pursued various disciplines of design and cultural studies including: theatre/stage design, critical writing on art & architecture, graphic art, and public art. He has published six books on New Brunswick architecture, including “Building Capital – A Guide to Fredericton’s Historic Landmarks”, “Building New Brunswick, an architectural history”, and his most recent “Glorious Light: the stained glass of Fredericton”. In 1998 he curated a large exhibition at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery covering the entire architectural history of New Brunswick. An associate of Saint John’s Acre Architects, John also teaches at UNB and St. Thomas University. MacDonald, Adam Artist Adam MacDonald begins his work with the study of landscapes. As he works, narratives emerge and images are manipulated through various printmaking processes. Characters, real or imagined, are added into the field of vision. The images are an exploration into the stories of places and people. MacDonald teaches drawing and design at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design McCullough, Betty Betty McCullough has over 25 years of experience as a teacher. She has taught seminars throughout New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, and continues to teach an average of 40 students on a weekly basis. She has organized painting retreats and studied with artists across Canada and the US. Her style, “Altered Art”, learned in Fort Langley, BC, will be the focus of this workshop. Meade, Joan Art has been a large part of Joan Meade’s life. Her first formal training was provided by E.R. Holt (who taught such greats as Millar Britain). She continued with a minor in Art at St. F.X University. She continued studying Art at NY State University College of Buffalo, UNB and the NB College of Craft and Design. She was an art specialist in Saint John schools and continues to instruct at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery and Stepping Stone Senior Centre.

Mermaid Theatre Company Founded in 1972, Mermaid Theatre Company's unique adaptations of children's literature have delighted more than four million young people on four continents. The company ranks among North America's most respected theatres for the young, and has won widespread recognition for its important ambassadorial role. Mermaid regularly crosses North America, and has represented Canada in Japan, Mexico, Australia, England, Northern Ireland, Holland, Scotland, Wales, Hong King, Macau, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Vietnam, and Ireland. Mermaid Theatre's emphasis on imaginative design elements, original music, and challenging texts provides a rich opportunity to acquaint young spectators with the visual and performing arts as well as with the pleasures of reading. Mermaid Theatre launched the Institute of Puppetry Arts in 1998 with the aim of promoting and enhancing the art of puppetry in Canada. The Institute’s classes, workshops, lectures and demonstrations may be tailored to the specific needs of educators, recreation leaders, theatre schools and industry. The Institute’s intensive sessions offer specialized training not otherwise available in Canada.

Musgrave, Deanna Musgrave was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1983. She graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (2005) from Mount Allison University, obtaining the honors of the “John P. Asimakos Painting Award” and the “Crake Performance Award in Fine Arts”. Since her graduation she has had successful solo exhibits at the private gallery “Ingrid Mueller Arts and Concepts”, was awarded the Beaverbrook Art Gallery’s “Studio Watch: Emerging Artist for 2007”, has two of her works in the permanent collection of the Beaverbrook Art Gallery, showed at the New Brunswick Museum and the 2008 International Toronto Art Fair. She has been a lecturer across Canada for artistic conferences and teaches drawing and painting at the university and college level in Fredericton, New Brunswick. She also holds a Bachelor of Education (2008) and Diploma in University Teaching (2009) from the University of New Brunswick, where she is currently pursuing a Master’s of Interdisciplinary Studies in Fine Art and Psychology. Her research interests include crossmodal integration, synesthesia and visual music. Neilsen, Gladys Gladys Neilsen has taught internationally at various painting chapters, private studios, and conventions. As a Certified Professional Demonstrator (CPD), Teacher, and Juried Member of the New Brunswick Craft Council, Gladys takes classes often to study art techniques and theory, keeping abreast of what’s new in the industry. She aims to ensure the success of each student by inspiring their creative side and endeavours to make learning a relaxing and fun experience. She has published well over 100 design packets distributed under Village Designs. Her instructional books, titled Village Views, have all hit bestseller lists.

Merritt, Leigh Leigh Merritt was born in Fredericton, New Brunswick and grew up in the rural community of Tay Creek. After completing his BA with at St. Thomas University, he studied at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design where he earned his Foundation Visual Arts Certificate (2006), a Certificate in Specialty Photography (2008), a Diploma in Fine Craft – Ceramics (2010), and a Certificate in Advanced Studies in Visual Arts (2011). In 2010 he received the Heather Stone Emerging Artist Award at the Atlantic Craft Trade Show in Halifax and was awarded the Duffie-Crowell Award at graduation. In June 2010 attended a ceramics residency at The Shaw International Centre for Contemporary Ceramics in Alberta.

Norman, Doris Doris Norman is a skilled artisan and teacher, having taught rug hooking at schools and retreats in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Burlington and Georgetown Ontario, Vancouver, Oregon, and at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design. Doris is an accredited Pearl McGown Teacher, USA and a Teacher of the Rug Hooking Guild of Nova Scotia. She is a member of numerous rug hooking guilds and has exhibited her work at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery, Memorial Hall on the University of New Brunswick campus, the Old Government House Art Gallery, and the York Sunbury Museum. Her expertise in rug hooking has been featured in published articles for Rug Hooking Magazine and various newsletters. She instructs all aspects of rug hooking design specifically Celtic, Jacobean, William Morris, and Pictoral.

Mitchell, Melanie Local designer Melanie Mitchell graduated from the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design with Diplomas in Surface Design and Fashion. She is now an instructor in Foundation of Visual Arts, Surface Design and Fashion at NBCCD. A self-professed fabric snob, Melanie prefers to work with silks, velvets and soft cottons. Through her designs, she often explores her obsession with color and texture, creating sensuous one-of-a-kind and ready to wear pieces.

Scheffers, Juliette After Juliette Scheffers graduated from the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design, she taught there for two years. For the past five years, Scheffers has been teaching and working from her studio in Harvey, NB, where she specializes in crystalline works. Her pottery has been showcased in galleries nationally and internationally.

Patterson, Freeman Freeman Patterson is a highly acclaimed photographer, writer, and teacher of visual design who hails from New Brunswick’s Kingston Peninsula. Freeman began teaching photography and visual design in the early 1960's in Alberta and commenced his annual series of week-long workshops in New Brunswick in 1973. He has also given dozens of workshops in South Africa, New Zealand, United States, and Israel and has completed lecture tours in the United Kingdom and Australia. Freeman has authored a number of books on visual design and photography, including Photography for the Joy of It, Photography and the Art of Seeing, Photography of Natural Things, Photography and the World Around You, and Photo Impressionism and The Subjective Image (co-authored with André Gallant). His other books include Namaqualand: Garden of the Gods, Portraits of Earth, In a Canadian Garden, The Last Wilderness: Images of the Canadian Wild, ShadowLight, Odysseys, and The Garden. He has received numerous awards from various countries and, in 1985, he was made a Member of the Order of Canada.

Science East Staff Science East is New Brunswick’s only hands-on science centre, and their staff delivers educational programming all over the province. They have experience working in schools with both students and teachers, and also with the public at numerous other events. Science East aims to make science more fun and enjoyable for all ages through their award-winning workshops and science shows. Sullivan, Erica Erica Sullivan has a clear love for nature. Owner of the budding business “Terra Inspirations Art Jewellery,” Erica designs and creates jewellery that is of the earth. After training at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design, and being the Director of Summer Youth Nature Camps for Nature NB, Erica is excited to share her love for nature and art with you! Her metal exploration has led to participation in travelling shows such as the Metal Arts Guild of Canada’s “MAG and the Year of Craft” and New Brunswick Craft Council’s provincial tour “Materialize.”

Pazienza, Jennifer Jennifer Pazienza has been an art educator for 30 years and has taught students ranging from kindergarten through university. She has presented papers and workshops at national and international conferences as well as publishing articles on teaching art. As a volunteer, she has supported local arts committees and juries. Most recently, she served at artist and educator in residence for the Beaverbrook Art Gallery. In a consulting capacity, Pazienza provided assistance for the Getty Centre for Arts in Education and for the Royal Kingdom of Bhutan. Dr. Pazienza teaches art education in the Faculty of Education for UNB. Her artwork has been exhibited and collected in Canada, the United States, and Italy.

Szabo-Nyarady, Zsuzsa Zsuzsa Szabo-Nyarady has degrees specializing in Kinesiology, Education, and Fine Arts. She is a Movement Educator and regularly lectures at the University of New Brunswick and St. Thomas University. With over 20 years of experience, her certification for Pilates, dance and yoga enables her to teach students of all ages and as well as professionals. Zsuzsa also participates as instructor at conferences on a regular basis.

Petite, Sarah Artist Sarah Petite loves two things best, encaustic paint and the classic board games. A series of painted "games that play" (complete with tokens and dice) from years past has germinated a recent group of abstract paintings called "Game Theory". With chess, pachisi, backgammon and mancala boards as a starting point, these works reflect on the strategies we use to maneuver our way through life. Petite has shown her work around the Maritimes, and shared her ideas with many others in classes and workshops.

Taylor, Stephen Stephen Taylor has extensive experience in the art and business world. Born in Scotland, Stephen completed a five-year apprenticeship as a furrier in Glasgow. In 1973, Stephen immigrated to Newfoundland and established a successful fashion retail and manufacturing business, while gaining skills in computer technology. He moved to Fredericton, NB in 1997 and while teaching business and computer assisted design for textiles at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design, completed a Bachelor of Education and a Master’s degree, Interdisciplinary Studies. He continues to work as a textile/leather designer and contractor for e-learning course and software development.

Venart, Joanne Costumer Joanne Venart has been an instructor at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design for the past ten years. She has worked for most of the major theatres across Canada, and has held various positions in their wardrobe departments, ranging from Tailor to Head of Wardrobe. Her main area of interest is in historical costume reproduction that has led to contracts from such organizations as Kings Landing Historical Settlement and the New Brunswick Museum. Her artworks have been shown at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery. Vose Jones, Kim Kim Vose Jones is a sculptor, installation artist, lecturer and writer. Vose Jones' artwork and writings have been featured in galleries, journals, catalogues and an art textbook. She studied glass blowing at Alfred University in New York and earned a BA from Concordia University in Montreal and an MFA from Maine College of Art in Portland Maine. Kim is the recipient of 2010 Charlotte Glencross Award, an ArtsNB Creation Grant and four ArtsNB Professional Development Grants, as well as MECA Dean's Scholarship and President's Award. Most recently she was named the 2011 Studio Watch: Emerging Artist by the Beaverbrook Art Gallery in Fredericton.

Thomas, Peter Ceramist Peter Thomas has worked, studied, taught, and exhibited extensively in Britain, Canada and the U.S. He holds an MFA from Claremont Colleges in California and has served on provincial and national arts/crafts organizations. His talent has been used on government and advisory boards. For over 20 years he has taught at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design. Tidswell, Kathy Kathy, a quilter, fibre artist, and instructor, has been teaching throughout Canada and selling fibre art for over 18 years. She will be a faculty member at a Quilt Canada for the fourth time in June 2011. In 2005 she was honoured as the Canadian Quilters’ Association/ACC Teacher of the Year. Kathy’s work has been accepted into Grand National Juried Quilt Exhibitions, Canadian Quilters’ Association/ACC National Juried Shows and The Ontario Network of Needleworkers: Threadworks 2010. Her wearable art received the Canadian Quilters’ Association/ACC National Juried Show Award of Excellence in 1999 and Honourable Mention in 2005. Her award winning work has been published nationally and internationally.

Weber, Veit Veit Weber has been practicing meditation since 1993. He has undertaken extensive training and been appointed Shastri (senior teacher) within the Shambhala Buddhist tradition, by Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche, the Head of the Lineage. Veit is also authorized to teach meditation by the Shambhala International.

Wybou, Deborah Deborah Wybou has been designing and creating jewellery as well as teaching the art of silver wire and chainmaille jewellery for six years. Deborah’s jewellery focuses on the metal, and one of her favourite mediums is sterling silver with or without semi-precious stones but she also works with fine silver, gold, gold-filled and copper. Deborah’s education and background is diverse, she spent much of her life in design, starting with clothing design in her teens and moving to home decorating in 1991. She received a Masters of Business from the University of New Brunswick in 2004. Deborah has over 17 years teaching experience in numerous areas and is the owner of Antithesis Designs.

Woolaver, Ellen When Ellen Woolaver was asked to help with costumes for the Christmas production at the Fredericton Playhouse, she had no idea it would change her life. That’s when she found her passion and went into a career of costume design, first studying Historical Costuming at Dalhousie University. The University of Calgary, the Stratford Festival, Theatre Plus in Toronto, Neptune Theatre in Halifax, and Theatre New Brunswick have all benefited from her work. Woolaver has taught costume and fashion design and is Studio Head Fashion Design at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design.

Parents who would like to take edVentures workshops can arrange safe and quality activities for their children. Please note, if minimum numbers are not met for any workshop, we make the call to cancel a workshop seven days out so don't wait until the last minute to register. If the participant cancels more than 30 days from the start of the class date, payment will be refunded in full less a $25 administration fee. If a participant cancels between 15 and 30 days in advance of the workshop, half the workshop fee plus the materials fee, if applicable, will be returned. If canceling less than 14 days no refund will be offered (the only exception being a death in the immediate family). If a workshop is completely filled and there is a waiting list, the enrollment is nontransferable as workshop space is limited. Class Size: edVentures workshops offer hands-on instruction in an intimate setting. Most classes range from 10 to 15 allowing participants to enjoy the opportunity to experience an enriching, learning environment. There is ample time to have extra instruction and a chance to get to know others in your class. Register early as most workshop classes are small. Facilities: The majority of workshops take place at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design unless

indicated otherwise in the workshop listing. Payment: Cash, debit cards and credit cards are accepted. Full workshop fee plus materials is required at time of registration. HST is applied to the workshop fee but not to material fees or any equipment rentals. Registering by May 31st?: A 15% discount off workshop fees will be applied to all paid registrations for adult workshops (16+) on or before May 31st, 2012, space permitting. Discount does not apply to any applicable materials fees or equipment rentals. A $25 late fee will apply to those that register within seven days of the workshop start date for adult-only workshops. This does not apply to UNB workshops. Registration: edVentures offers a number of ways to make the registering for a workshop as simple as possible. You can choose from email, telephone, fax, mail, online, and, of course, in person. Supplies: We've made it easy and, with only a few exceptions, all supplies are provided with the materials fee. Should you already have some experience and wish to bring some of your own tools, certainly do so. We recommend labelling them well. We will contact you should suggestions for any other items for your workshop be recommended. Taking More Than One 5-day Workshop This Summer? – Will you be a familiar face at edVentures? For those participants taking a 5-day adult (16+) workshop, any subsequent 5-day adult workshop you register for will be available to you at a 20% discount off

the workshop fee, space permitting. The workshops do not have to be booked at the same time for this discount to apply and this offer is valid throughout the 2012 program. Please indicate at the time of booking that you are a familiar face to edVentures meaning that you have already paid for a 5-day workshop this year. To qualify, you must be the actual participant and indicate that you are eligible for the reduced fee before the final financial transaction has taken place. This offer cannot be combined with another discount, it is not retroactive, and does not apply to any applicable materials fees or equipment rentals. Want to Teach? If you are interested in teaching a workshop as part of next year’s offering please let us know. Send along a brief description of the workshop you would like to teach, the length of the workshop, your experience teaching in your field, and your c.v Scheduling takes place in the fall so please contact us no later than September 30 for your application to be considered for the following year’s program. When Should I Register? We recommend registering early to avoid disappointment as workshop class sizes are limited. If you can commit by May 31st, why not take advantage of 15% discount off the adult workshop fee? Workshop Times: Unless otherwise indicated, workshops are offered 9 am 12 noon and 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Lunch is on your own. Several unique restaurants are nearby to the NBCCD where the majority of workshops are held.
