OBSERVATIONS FROM
Jason
This month of February will be an eventful month at Fredericksburg UMC. We begin the season of Lent. Ash Wednesday, February 18, marks the beginning of this season. We will have a service that evening at 6:30 p.m. Lent is a season to for selfexamination and reflection on our commitment to follow Jesus as his disciples. In conjunction with this emphasis, we will be introducing our new “discipleship pathway,” developed by our HCI Discipleship Pathway Team. We’ve adopted as our mission statement that we exist to “make new disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.” In accomplishing that mission, the Discipleship Pathway Team’s “prescribed” task was both develop a profile of “how a disciple of Jesus Christ belongs and acts, and reproduces other disciples,” as well as to assist the pastor in “developing and implementing a comprehensive pathway to help individuals become devoted disciples of Jesus Christ.” This process, called A Disciple’s Path, is what we’ve chosen to use for our “discipleship pathway” at Fredericksburg UMC. This is a process for new members to experience to help them follow that pathway (or to begin it, in some cases). A Disciple’s Path connects membership to discipleship. To introduce this to the whole congregation (and we ALL need to be moving along the discipleship pathway), we are asking all adult Sunday School classes to participate in this study in their classes. The way it will begin is with a Pastor’s Orientation on February 8, which I will facilitate with all classes joined together in the Fellowship Hall at 10 a.m. following the contemporary worship schedule. The sessions in the various classes will begin the following Sunday on February 15 and continue through March 22. There will be an accompanying sermon series in worship, which will also begin February 15. If you haven’t in the past participated in an adult Sunday School class, I would encourage you to attend one during this period. I hope everyone in the congregation participates both in a class and in worship. On the first Sunday of this on February 8, we will also begin our experimental worship schedule with two services, with a Sunday School period for all classes of all ages (see more specific information about this elsewhere in this newsletter). Both of these things, A Disciple’s Path and the experimental worship schedule, call for us to venture into new territory, to see where God will lead us. Discipleship is not a place where we settle, but a journey that we travel. Let us all be in prayer as we journey together during the season of Lent. Journeying together with you, Jason Fry
SID’S BUTTERFLY
Flutterings
Gloria Gaither, wife of Bill Gaither of the gospel group--“The Gaither Vocal Band,” is one of my heroes in the Faith because she puts words down on a page that become like a waterfall of strength and beauty— poetry and healing for my soul. She explained in an interview that she “listens” to the tune over and over before she ever puts a word on the page. She lets the meaning evolve from the melody—then she writes the message that is the inspiration from the power that “sings” in her heart and soul. For example, she tells the story that Bill Gaither asked her to put the pen and poetry to the tune of “FINLANDIA.” I keep a copy of her poetry under my office desk top. In the United Methodist Hymnal we sing “This is My Song” (#437) and “Be Still My Soul” (#534) to that tune and that tune also just happens to be Marge’s all-time favorite. Go to your computer and open “You Tube” and listen to some of the beauty and power of the Gaither music. Just Google this title: “I Then Shall Live” by Gaither (Words by Gloria Gaither & Music by Jean Sibelius; (1981 Gaither Music Company. Music copyright Breikoph & Hartel). Sing along using these lyrics: I then shall live as one who’s been forgiven; I’ll walk with joy to know my debts are paid. I know my name is clear before my Father; I am His child, and I am not afraid. So greatly pardoned, I’ll forgive my brother, The law of love I gladly will obey. I then shall live as one who’s learned compassion; I’ve been so loved that I’ll risk loving too. I know how fear builds walls instead of bridges, I’ll dare to see another’s point of view. And when relationships demand commitment, Then I’ll be there to care and follow through. Your kingdom come around and through and in me; Your power and glory, let them shine through me; Your Hallowed name, O may I bear with honor, And may Your living Kingdom come in me. The Bread of Life, O may I share with honor, And may You feed a hungry world through me. Amen. Amen. Amen. Send me an email (sid@fredumc.org) and share your thoughts and feelings; especially if you can feel “the waterfall of strength and beauty” in your heart and soul. I pray that you have God-Bumps (not goose bumps!!!) when you sing and mature into a disciple of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, with a theology found in Gloria Gaither’s poetry in “Finlandia”. Thank you, Gloria Gaither, for helping us sing God’s song. Be Blessed dear reader, Pastor Sid

CHILDREN’S
Ministry Teaching God’s Laws I think I have the best job in the church. I am almost guaranteed that each week I am going to get a hug, a look of appreciation, my hand grabbed in faith that I am going to get its owner to the correct place. I get to work with our smallest church members who still believe anything is possible. As I look at their beautiful and handsome faces I often pray that God leads our church to serve them well. One thing I am sure of is that God calls us to teach the children His laws – Love Him with all of our hearts, minds and souls and love each other. So the questions are, “How do we teach them what love truly is and how to live out His commandments in life? How do we as individuals and as a Christian family demonstrate the acts of love God calls us to do” As I was driving, pondering this question I heard June Hunt on a Christian radio station giving advice to an angry, bitter man on how to love and forgive She suggested that man go to I Corinthians 13:4-7, the definition of love. Then she told him to put his name in place of the word “love” or its pronoun each time they appeared to determine if he was acting according to God’s command. So, if I follow June’s advice for myself it would go something like this: Sharon is patient. Then I have to ask myself if someone irritates me will I be patient with that person? Will I hold my tongue? Will I be willing to carefully, over time analyze the words and actions of the other person. Learn from them and then chose to let God be judge? Will I be patient enough to wait on God’s will? As a person does this it becomes apparent that love is not easy. It is hard not to get angry at times and harder still not to remember wrong doings. Perhaps the most difficult demands of love are to protect others (from any physical, emotional, spiritual harm); to always trust others and God; to always hope; to always persevere, not running away when things get difficult. After going through this exercise, the love God is talking about becomes much clearer and gives one a clear standard to use in trying to follow God’s law. What is even more wonderful is that God attaches a promise to His two most important commandments. In I Corinthians 13: 8 - LOVE NEVER FAILS. Think about the amazing gift we can give to our children if we not only teach them God’s commandments, but demonstrate to them what it looks like as we interact with each other. We all want to live within a family that never is envious, boastful, proud, rude, self seeking, easily angered, that keeps records of wrong doing, etc. Rather we want to be in a family that is always patient, loving, protects ,trusts, hopes, and preservers. If we can become such a family we will not only teach God’s laws to our children, we will also teach them about undeserved grace.
MUSIC New Worship Schedule Changes With the changes we’re looking at for the experimentation period of Lent, the Music Ministry has some adjusting to do! It was September 6, 2009 when the Chancel Choir was asked to fill two different worship services, and for 5 years the choir has done just that. And during that period we have gone from having 35 singers to nearly 50. We have about the same number singing in the 11:00 worship time as we did in one service before September ’09. This church has been blessed with men and women who love to sing and give of themselves over and over, even trying some strange and different things but always present to lead in worship for the traditional worship times. On February 8, the Chancel Choir will be ‘together again’ singing in one regular worship service in our Sanctuary. That creates a bit of a good problem in that we have grown more than the space that is in the choir loft! Having 48 members and only 43 chairs means we have to squeeze in a few more chairs if everyone is here! But don’t worry… we have several engineers in the choir that can figure out a solution! The important thing to know is that the Chancel Choir of Fredericksburg United Methodist Church isn’t through growing. There is plenty of room form more singers that wish to join this fun and dedicated group, so come on and join us for rehearsals on Wednesday evenings at 7:00! Chancel Choir’s Changing Leadership The Chancel Choir has been led and managed through the last 7 years with a group called the Choir Council, which consists of section leaders, and other positions that carry on the week to week functions of the choir. The council is elected in January for 3 year terms, rotating through 3 or 4 different positions each year. This year, the choir has selected a new President, Billy Harrell to take on the leadership of the group and fill the big shoes or the past President, E.W. Hallford who actually was selected to fill the tenor section leader position. Since 2008 we have counted on the time and skill of Kathy Doerr to handle the librarian position which is probably the busiest time-consuming role in the Council. Kathy steps down this year and Kathy Weaver will assume the role of managing the printed music of the choir. Leadership changes as the years progress, but the main role of the Chancel Choir continues to provide this congregation with the best choral sounds of any church in the area. The commitment and faithfulness of this group from our congregation has been dependable each week for supplying beautiful praise to our Lord and helping to provide this church with meaningful times of worship. Through the history of FUMC there has been a committed group that has filled the choir loft seats either at First Church or Edison Street, and that commitment hasn’t changed to this day. Take a little time in your next visit to the church to say thanks to those who have filled those seats this past year! If you have any questions please email me at don@fredumc.org, or call me at 997-7679 To God Be the Glory!!
Fuel your fire, join a choir!

The 2015 World Day of Prayer service will begin at the first sunrise on March 6, 2015, in the Pacific region, and following the earth’s orbit, will spread all around the world. For Gillespie County Texas, services begin at 10:00 a.m., at Fredericksburg United Methodist Church. The women of The Bahamas call us to consider Jesus’ words to the disciples after washing their feet: “Do you understand what I have done for you?” These women describe Jesus washing their feet as ‘radical love;’ and to them, radical love comes from humility, compassion, and commitment. God’s radical love is not static, nor self-centered, His love reaches out and draws others in.
Fredericksburg UMW cordially invites all members, and friends, of our church family to come, listen to our Bahamian sisters throughout this special worship service. The transformative power of our prayers are seen when a teen mother does not feel alone as she finds support to continue her education and to raise her child; when a breast cancer survivor, or people living with HIV and Aids find strength to live out their journey; when chains of oppression and enslavement are broken and those in bondage are set free. Through this service, the women of WDP Bahamas extend their invitation to beauty and love in the name of the transformative radical love that Jesus brings to all of us. VALENTINE’S DAY COOKIE PLATES
The United Methodist Women’s annual cookie plate delivery date will be Friday, February 13, and they need YOUR help! They need 275 dozen nut-free cookies by no later than 8:00 a.m. on February 13. Even better if you can have them to the fellowship hall by 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 12. They also need volunteers to help set up tables and create plates on that day starting at 10:00 a.m. Most importantly, they need delivery drivers on the 13th at 9:00 a.m. to make sure their hard-baked cookies get shared with residents and staff members of nursing homes and assisted living facilities and shut-ins. Share a little extra love this Valentine’s Day and contact Marcia Lingaas at 990-4415 to learn more about how to get involved with this project.
WE INVITE YOU TO JOIN US FOR A
Special Lent Worship Schedule
During the season of lent, we will be experimenting with a new worship schedule. Beginning on February 8, we will hold a contemporary worship service at 9:00, have a dedicated Sunday School hour from 10-11:00 a.m., and a traditional worship service will begin at 11:10. We will still have Agape time before and after our Sunday School hour from 9:30-11:30. Here’s what this new schedule means: -All Sunday School classes will meet at the same time, so anyone can attend the Sunday school class of his or her choice, and also the preferred style of worship. -We will have a fuller house in the Sanctuary on Sunday mornings, which means more opportunities for fellowship. Getting to worship will a big group of awesome Christians whose hearts are set on God is a great way to start the week. -Our already amazing choir that is currently split into two groups will join together for one service, which means more voices and a louder joyful noise. -A briefer service. Pray for us as we try to get our service down to 50 minutes. (Fewer announcements!) -There is an opportunity for greater participation in Sunday School for all ages. -Agape hour during transition times will be more brief. However, the option to come thirty minutes before Sunday school and stay thirty minutes after is available for those who want that time. Change is not easy, but we ask that everyone enter into this experiment with an open mind and open heart and hold off making immediate assessments until we experience how this change could impact us in a positive way and aid us in accomplishing our mission of “making new disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the
world.”
THOUGHTS ABOUT THE MEMORY GARDEN
Peggy Benson
Many of you may not realize what a special garden our church has at the entrance to the church. Like churches in early America when churches with graveyards dotted the countryside allowing its church members and friends an opportunity to remember the special lives they lived and what they had meant to their church and to their community. The church where I attended as a child and youth had such a cemetery and many of my relatives including my parents and grandparents are buried there. Whenever I am home visiting other family in Virginia, I visit the cemetery and say a prayer of thanksgiving for the love they showed me through the years. However, as time has passed, the quiet dignity of the church graveyard has been replaced by remote and impersonal cemeteries.
That is not the case at our church. Now that more people are choosing to be cremated, it is a natural progression that churches such as ours are providing gardens containing a Columbarium with niches to hold a person’s ashes so that they can remain near the church. This revives the cherished tradition of churchyard burials and provides our families with a sense of continuity and a way to connect the generations. As a place to meditate on the lives of deceased family members, our Memory Garden is a powerful witness to the oneness with God of the living and those who have passed. A second and very special feature of the Memory Garden, is our Memory Wall which allows a loved one to purchase a plaque in memory of someone who has been buried elsewhere. This provides a place of remembrance for meditative prayer by friends and family in a lovely setting at the church which is a place that was special to the deceased loved one. As I visit the Garden I am reminded of so many members who were very special to me and to our church. I am so grateful l that our church provides such a beautiful place of remembrance. Details about the Memory Garden can be found in a lovely brochure which has been written by The Memory Garden Committee and placed in the racks behind the Welcome Desk. I hope you will pick one up and after reading it, give one of the committee members a call if you have questions or if you would be interested in purchasing either a niche in the Columbarium or a plaque for the Memory Wall.
