ear Friends,
Well here we are experiencing our first Christmas in Fredericksburg! I just want to say on behalf of Brenda and myself how grateful we are to be here, and how wonderful all of you have been to us. Thank you so much for your prayers, your support, your friendship, and your generosity. You have blessed us mightily.

They need a home. They need hospitality and friendship and support and encouragement. They need the Gospel. Good News. Good Hope. Good Life.
People keep asking us how we like Fredericksburg, whether we like it here, how we have been experiencing the move, etc. Besides the weight gain and never being at home because apparently we have moved to Party Town Texas, it’s been great! Seriously, it has been a privilege and a blessing to be a part of both this congregation and the community. I think our goal is simply to be found faithful, both to the church and the community and to new friends. As I reflect on our new home, I am reminded of how we have been thinking about the word “home” in connection to our church. Fredericksburg is, of course, a community of great vitality, talent, and wealth. But I also see many of the struggles as well. Everything from young minimum wage earners trying to make it against great odds to
So. Here we are on the brink of 2016, with great blessings and great challenges. But that’s a good thing. A good place to be. A home. Thanks for welcoming us to our new home, as we seek to be a blessing to all of you.

I
like to start my New Year off with something positive because I have very little, if any, “luck” in keeping New Year’s resolutions! In fact, I have stopped totally using any energy in making up something I know I won’t do or keep. However, I have found something that I can use each and every day in my Christian Walk with Christ. I invite you to post this on your mirror and read it every day in 2016! Happy New Year!!!
“
compromised, detoured, lured away, turned back, diluted, or delayed. I will not flinch in the face of sacrifice, hesitate in the presence of adversity, negotiate at the table of the enemy, ponder at the pool of popularity, or meander in the maze of mediocrity. I won’t give up, shut up, let up, or burn up till I’ve preached up, prayed up, paid up, stored up, and stayed up for the cause of Christ. I am a disciple of Jesus. I must go till he comes, give till I drop, preach all I know, and work till he stops.
My past is redeemed, my present makes sense, and my Be Blessed in 2016, Pastor Sid future is secure.
I am part of the fellowship committed to doing “whatever it takes.” I have Holy Spirit power. The die has been cast. I’ve stepped over the line. I am out of the comfort zone. The decision has been made. I’m a disciple of his. I won’t look back, let up, slow down, or back away. My past is redeemed, my present makes sense, and my future is secure. I am finished and done with low living, sighwalking, small planning, smooth knees, colorless dreams, tame visions, mundane talking, chintzy giving, and dwarfed goals!
I no longer need pre-eminence, prosperity, position, promotions, or popularity. I don’t have to be right, first, tops, recognized, praised, regarded, or rewarded. I now life by presence, learn by faith, love by patience, lift by prayer, and labor by power. My face is set, my gait is fast, my goal is heaven, my road is narrow, my way is rough, my companions few, my guide reliable, my mission clear. I cannot be bought,
And when he comes to get his own, he’ll have no problem recognizing me because I have dedicated my life to be a part of the fellowship committed to doing “whatever it takes!”

About the money...
ear Friends,
I know that one of the traditional colors for Christmas is red, but this year my favorite Christmas color is black. As in, finishing the year “in the black.” As of today (Dec. 17) we are definitely in the red. We still need about $128,000 in donations to meet the budget and finish the year in the black. We are trying to keep it positive, and I think we have. Folks have complained that they don’t like to be brow beaten or hounded into guilt based giving. I agree that this is not the way to do it, and I certainly don’t want to do that myself, but friends, don’t make me nervous! I will admit that I sometimes get discouraged when I see what people spend their money on, and the church gets neglected. Discouraged because I know all the great things this congregation does, and I want you to know as well. Know that your generosity makes a difference. Know that your giving is important. Know that what you give sends toys to Mexico, teenagers to Central America, and missionaries to China. Know that your faithful giving empowers us to bless families during times of grief, give hope when going through medical treatment, provide comfort through Christian friendship, and renew the spirit through meaningful worship. Recently I was talking to a couple who have been visiting our church. They have become so excited about their experience here that they have been rearranging their schedule so that they don’t miss church. In other words, instead of worship being what you do when you have nothing else to do, it has changed into a priority. And not simply because it is 9
Vol. 10 Jan. 2016
fun or entertaining, but because through it they are experiencing deep healing and profound grace. Because you give.
I am optimistic for the long haul. Our pledges for 2016 are significantly up over last year ($590,958 for 2016; $531,060 for 2015). Your Finance Committee is still working on a budget for 2016. By and large, they are committed to a zero increase in spending for the coming year. They are also committed to good, open, transparent accounting while honoring strict confidentiality. They are also trying to act in faithful, spirit-led trusting while at the same time exercising good stewardship as well. You can be proud of them. Overall, we are under budget on spending, and you can thank everyone from the staff to the Trustees to the Wonder Workers, as well as many others, for this. If down the road, we need to make significant budget cuts, we will do whatever it takes. But that will be painful, as it means we will have to cut ministry and/or staff. The real long term goal is not to “make the budget” at the end of the year, but as a congregation decide what God is calling us to do and then fund it for the glory of God and the blessing of His people. Now I could get excited about that. And I know you could too. And then I wouldn’t have to write letters like this at Christmas time! So, thank you for your generosity, remember your church this holiday season, be blessed to be a blessing, and have a wonderful, amazing, Christ-filled Christmas. Proud to be your pastor,
George Lumpkin

A LETTER OF Farewell A mazing Grace by Sharon Massey

December. This is due to some family obligations. I am just entering a new season of my life. So, I want to take this opportunity to tell what an incredible journey God and you, my church family, have allowed me to take. First, I deeply believe that God led me to this wonderful adventure. Throughout the entire time He has extended His grace to me through my brothers and sisters in Christ. He has continually provided whatever was needed, sometimes before I ever knew there was going to be a need. The latest example of this occurred on December 2nd. That was the date of the Christmas Family Dinner for the Pioneer Club. Originally Barbara Wilcox was going to be the meal coordinator and head chef. The rest of the Children’s Ministry Cooking team was going to support her. However, Barbara had to have a shoulder replacement and some of the other team members had some conflicts. Even though you might think that complete chaos would be the result of significantly reduced numbers of workers and the lack of a meal plan, but not so. God had taken care of everything before I even knew there would be a problem. The
United Methodist Women sold pizza tickets, asking purchasers to donate them to the Children’s Ministry. The response was wonderful. Little did I know that I would need them for a Pioneer Club Christmas Pizza Buffet. Second, I discovered the true beauty of God’s church. I saw it daily as His servants did a million different things to share His love. Whether it was teaching the children, singing His praises, financially helping a person in need, visiting the ill and the shutins, making prayer shawls and cards for other church members or repairing the church the love shared was bountiful. It has been a great joy to serve our church. There is nothing like getting a hug from one of our children. And it has been an inspiration to see the many who are willing to teach them about God’s word and His love. Thank all of you who have helped me as I have served as the Director of Children’s Ministry. I cannot tell you how my heart rejoices, because I know that Christ’s church will be blessed through your efforts.
INTRODUCING OUR
Newest Staff Member
W
e are pleased to welcome Lisa Davis as the newest member of the Fredericksburg UMC staff. Here are a few words from Lisa about her life and new position as our Children’s Director: My name is Lisa Davis. My husband, Elliott, and I moved to Fredericksburg 10 years ago. We have 2 boys, Jonathan, 14 and Christopher, 11. During the last 7 years God has given me the privilege to teach His Word to children as a children's leader at Bible Study Fellowship, Sunday School and at multiple VBS programs. This has developed a passion in me for the Bible and for children to know it. I am excited for the opportunity God is giving me to bring children and families closer to Christ. Thanks, Lisa Davis
Sharon served as Children’s Director for FUMC from 2014-2015. She is also deeply involved in Wounded Warriors at Nebo and Cards for Christ. She feels called to share Christ’s great love for humanity through her service, and will continue to stay involved with our children’s ministry as a volunteer.

S
ince the very first meeting of our Kid’s Music Academy, we have wanted to move it more into a community music school rather than merely a “church children’s choir” program. We have had some slim years with around 20 kids enrolled, and we have had some very large groups like in the past 2 years. But the core purpose of KMA is to train up our community children to not only appreciate music, but actually participate in it by singing, playing an instrument and reading music. These 3 areas are important to help each child be a total musician. Cutting out any one of these three doesn’t give a full education to the child, so we try to make sure that each student is involved in each one. 13 Vol. 10 Jan. 2016
We started with working on theory with graded workbooks where each group would work on their grade’s music theory book so that they would be finished with it by the end of the school year. Beginning about four years ago, we received some grant money to buy 15 laptop computers and begin teaching music theory through fun software. The singing part was learning songs to sing with everyone in a choir, first separate songs but then going into musical presentations. Instrumentally, the children all rang bells or choir chimes so they would read the notes and be able to respond in a tactile way via the bell or chime. Singing is good, but physically playing an instrument by reading music is incredibly important to the child’s musical growth.
About 5 years ago, we decided to add to our instrumental education another option: violin. Pat Lee, the Director of the Hill Country Youth Orchestra at the time, drove to our campus every Wednesday afternoon to teach a beginning violin class. Over that span of time, we’ve had over 20 children begin playing violin through KMA. As Pat Lee’s schedule began to get busier, she had to quit coming to Fredericksburg and we hired another string teacher to fill her shoes.
the HCYO system and our beginning groups will be part of their beginning groups getting the same instruction as the Monday evening programs under the direction of Sarah Klein.
The Hill Country Youth Orchestra program, which meets at the First Methodist Church of Kerrville every Monday afternoon, is comprised of 5 separate groups based on age and playing ability with about 150 students involved. These groups go all the way from beginners to High School students that are receiving great scholarships to high level universities.
Lots of good things are happening to our Music Ministry, and KMA is a big part of it! We always need more adult support and help and would love to see you come and check us out on Wednesday afternoons beginning around 3:30 after school!
Many of our kids who began violin went on to begin playing a band instrument in our school system, but some continued on playing violin and are currently playing in the HCYO program. Beginning in January, our KMA string program will officially be part of
Another move to make KMA more of a community music program is to have several more professional music teachers join our ranks, and that has happened this year with Donna Vaughan and Melinda Wade-English teaching choir and recorder respectively.
If you have any questions please email me at don@fredumc.org, or call me at 997-7679… To God Be the Glory!! Don Doss joined the FUMC staff in April of 2007 having served in several other Boerne and Kerrville churches. Don is FUMC’s Director of Music Ministries, and he oversees all of the musical groups and music ministry work that happens here. He personally directs the Chancel Choir and the Praise Team as well as the Kid’s Music Academy.

H
ello Church! Your friendly neighborhood communications director here. I’ve been trying for two weeks to write this article, and nothing I end up with seems to be what I actually want to say. Recently, I’ve been spreading myself pretty thin trying to prepare everything for Christmas Eve and the rest of the holiday season here at FUMC, working hard on the next two shows at the Fredericksburg Theater Company, getting Christmas shopping done, you know, all the normal day to day business of life around Christmastime. The point is, I’ve been so focused on the to -do list, that I don’t even think I’ve had time to really let anything sink in, let alone try and figure out how to respond intelligently to it. So as I’ve continued struggling to write for you this month, and as I’ve done my best to navigate this whole still being new to adulthood thing, I’ve come to a startling and profound conclusion (read that last bit as sarcasm): I need Jesus. Deeply. Desperately. Every second. Every day. I need Jesus.
“
personally. Ridiculous, I know. The whole type A thing stems from a deep seeded fear of not having it all together. I think that if I can just plan enough or organize enough or do all the “right things” or just keep myself busy and involved enough that bad things won’t happen, and if they do, I have no choice but to suck it up and stay strong and keep going. If I let things slip, if I lose one tiny bit of control, it means everything goes to hell in a handbasket all at once. It’s my biggest fear, friends. Which means that my next statement is probably one of the most difficult ones I’ve ever put down in print. I do not, under any circumstances, have it all together. It doesn’t matter how much I tell myself I do. It doesn’t matter how many things I cross off my to-do list. It doesn’t matter how many mornings I leave my apartment with a made bed and no dishes in the sink and how many nights I go to bed with the coffee set and clothes laid out for the next day. I’m wrecked, and I need Jesus.
Deeply. Desperately. Every second. Every day. I need Jesus.
Church, as I’m sure many of you have figured out by now, I’m super type A. I like to plan every detail of everything, I like knowing everything that’s coming up, I like schedules, I like things neat and clean and I thrive in high stress but productive busy-ness. When wrenches get thrown in my strategic approaches and seemingly well-thought out plans, I kind of flip out. In fact, I irrationally take getting thrown for a loop very, very
”
Now friends, it’s one thing to admit I’m a newbie at my job, but another to confess how deeply broken and needy I am as a human being. I am holding on so tight to the gift of a precious baby who grew up to give himself to heal my brokenness, and to the promise that he is making all things new for his glory! Happy 2016, dear friends. You are so, so loved. Peace, Tricia fredumc.org 16

CROCHETING FOR A cause W
hat do HCM Delivery Room, Fredericksburg Elementary School, Wounded Warriors at NEBO, Project Linus, Special Olympics and your church congregation all have in common? Answer: Every one of these groups receive items knitted or crocheted by the Prayer Shawl Ministry at Fredericksburg United Methodist Church. This group meets every Tuesday morning from 9 – 11 in the church library. We would love to have you join us. We will even try and teach you how to knit or crochet if you don’t know how. Grants by the FUMC Foundation have provided the yarn and some supplies to create the blankets and shawls that many of you have received. One member has made and donated over 150 loom knitted caps that have been given to the Wounded Warrior project. More recently the group has begun providing fleece blankets with decorative edging to the Counselors and Nurses at Fredericksburg Elementary School. These provide comfort to the little ones facing surgery or other circumstances. We have also provided small blankets to the Delivery Room so they can wrap newborns in them when they go home. This will expand to provide blankets for families who are unable to provide a layette for their newborn. Also, we have supported the Project Linus program in San Antonio with these blankets. Finally we make scarves for the Texas Special Olympics each year.
This year we will send about three dozen scarves to be given out at the State Special Olympics. Our special focus remains prayer shawls that are given to FUMC members or friends that are experiencing grief or a major crisis in their life. If you know of someone that needs to feel God’s love and comfort, please let the church office or any member of the Prayer Shawl group know so that we can let you deliver one of these shawls.

CELEBRATING OUR Fredericksburg UMC Wonder Workers
T
he Wonder Workers have been busy maintaining and upgrading our church’s physical facilities. Did you note the recent excavations outside the gym next to the main parking lot? After being inoperative for a couple of months due to a short circuit, the Wonder Workers got the parking lot lights and front entry lights working again.
these lights to replace the ‘dumb’ time switch which knew nothing about changes in sunrise and sunset or when changes to/ from daylight savings time occur. This should assure the outside lights are on when needed, but not coming on during daylight hours when not needed.
Have you noticed the lighting in the main hallways and narthex seem a little We also brighter This is replaced the part of a longlights in the bulletin board Above: John Doudna, Charlie Koym, Archie Klein, Mel Mueller, Jim term upgrade Swink, Tom Canfield. Not pictured: Al Bispo project the just outside Wonder Workers recommended to the the front door with LED strip lights to Trustees and that they approved to improve replace the old fluorescent lights which had energy efficiency of the church. The older quit working. Based on a recommendation part of the church has 163 fluorescent light made to and approved by the Trustees, the fixtures (some 2-tube, some 3-tube, and Wonder Workers also installed an some 4-tube) based on the old T12 style astronomic time switch that controls all technology that existed when the church Vol. 9 Dec. 2015 19 Vol. 10 Jan. 2016 23
was first built. Not only do the T12 tubes draw 40 Watts each, the 3 and 4-tube fixtures all had two magnetic ballasts which were real “energy hogs.” The Wonder Workers have embarked on a 13-14 month-long project to upgrade all the T12 fixtures to the newer T8 technology. This is what was used when the youth wing was built and when the kitchen was remodeled. The T8 tubes only draw 32 Watts each, and the T8 technology only requires one, higher efficiency electronic ballast, regardless of the number of tubes in the fixture. Not only that, the T8 lamps actually produce more light than the old T12 style lamps. What a deal – more light with less energy. If you’re around church Tuesday mornings, you’ll see the Wonder Workers working on this project for about the next year or so.
Last note. If you see something broken or not working, let the Wonder Workers know about it by e-mailing John Doudna at: jdoudna@earthlink.net. The Wonder Workers can’t fix it if we don’t know it’s broken. We need your help to identify problems around the church.
The Board of Trustees would like to express our sincere thanks to the Wonder Workers for all their work repairing and maintaining our facilities. We especially appreciate the repair of the underground wiring to the parking lot lights and the work on the fluorescent lights in the hallways. Please express your thanks when you see them. fredumc.org

youth daily through residential care and foster care. The January 3rd communion rail offering will go to our church benevolence fund. Thank you and God bless you.
Children’s Ministry Donations As part of a special project in December, The children will be creating gift bags to take to a nursing home. We received $57 during the Factory ministry fair. However, we still will need a few items to complete our project. Please consider donating any of the following items: paper towels, travel size shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, tooth brush, mouth wash, hand cream, soap, face towel. Beginning Sunday, November 1st there will be a box in the Fellowship Hall for donations. Thank you for your support.
Share Your Ministry
One of the most impactful ways to meet people where they are is offering them an amazing Sunday worship experience. This goes beyond just the sermon and music, and that’s where you come in! We can always use smiling faces to serve as greeters at the door or behind the Welcome Desk, lay readers to read prayers and scripture during worship services, communion servers the first Sunday of each month, and audiovisual tech help to run the livestream and even help with our worship slides and sound. If you are interested in any of these, call the church office at 997-7679
Looking for a way to share your ministry with others? Contact the church office and pick a Sunday to feature the good work of your ministry. You can share your ministry during one or both services and at a table just outside of the sanctuary. This is a great way to let others know what you’re doing to help others and to encourage new members to join your ministry.
Financial Support Opportunities
You Do You
As you seek to bless others this Christmas Season, please do not forget to bless your church as well. The church depends very much on your generosity. Your Christmas gifts to the church are necessary to help us continue to do ministry, outreach, teach and preach the Gospel, and provide a place for Christian fellowship. Christmas Eve Rail Offerings will go to Providence Place and Methodist Children's Home. Providence Place helps provide shelter and services for young women with unplanned pregnancies and adoption. The Methodist Children's Home in Waco helps provide services to children and
We want to empower you to use your individual gifts, talents and passions to serve God and carry out our mission of creating new disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. Have some thoughts about how to engage with FUMC and the community? Or an idea for a ministry? A community outreach event? Maybe you want to teach a bible study class? Let us know how we can help you! Call the church office at 997-7679 fredumc.org 28
