ebruary is the love month for me. Of importance, it is my birthday month and one cannot forget that it is also the month for Valentines. When I think of both days, I think of a kiss from Marge on my birthday, and on Valentine’s Day I return the peck of grace and give her a kiss…for love is in the air! After all, Paul writes in Romans 16:16 to greet everyone with “a holy kiss.” Richard Selzer writes about such a kiss:
“
“Yes,” I say, “it will be. It is because the nerve was cut.” She nods and is silent. But the young man smiles. “I like it,” he says. “It is kind of cute.” All at once I know who he is. I understand, and I lower my gaze. One is not bold in an encounter with a god. Unmindful, he bends to kiss her crooked mouth, and I am so close I can see how he twists his own lips to accommodate her, to show her that their kiss still works.”
After all, Paul writes in Romans 16:16 to greet Be Blessed (hopefully with a everyone with a kiss!) Pastor Sid ‘holy kiss.’
“I stand by the bed where a young woman lies, her face postoperative, her mouth twisted in palsy; clownish. A tiny twig of the facial nerve, the one to the muscles of her mouth, has been severed. She will be thus from now on. The surgeon had followed with religious fervor the curve of her flesh; I promise you that. Nevertheless, to remove, the tumor from her cheek I had cut the little nerve. Her young husband is in the room. He stands on the opposite side of the bed, and together they seem to dwell in the evening lamplight, isolated from me, private. Who are they, I ask myself, he and this wry-mouth I have made, who gaze at and touch each other so generously, greedily?
“Will my mouth always be like this?” she asks.
”

ave you ever been caught up in a moment and said something you meant at the time, but later on you aren’t sure you can live up to what you said? Well, that was me last June when I told Burton Brooks from Belize, “Hey, you should come to our church in Fredericksburg and put on a concert! We will make it happen.” I got on the plane and headed home from an amazing week determined to bring him to FUMC. But about a month after the trip I began to reconsider that promise. There were a lot of walls standing in the way. Money, Time, Is His style of music going to be received well, Communication and others. Through all the doubt, God kept that promise in the front of my mind. So I continued to pray that God would make something happen. As I looked at the fall calendar for the youth group and church, there wasn’t a date that fit for us to bring Burton for a Youth concert. Burton and I began to realize that maybe January 2016 would be the right time. So I told him, “January 23-24 you are coming to Fredericksburg for the weekend,” and I 5

put it on the church calendar having no idea how we were going to pay for it, if anyone would show up to the concert or if anyone would care about this man from Belize. And that is when I realized that God was working to make that promise a reality. As the date approached, Burton and I talked and he asked if his musician friend, Paul, and his wife, Gail, could join him on the trip. I was worried about the cost of having now three people fly from Belize and stay in Fredericksburg for the weekend. But through your (the congregation) generous donations throughout the year we had plenty of money to get them all here! And a big thank you goes out to E.W., Ruby and Margaret Hallford for letting them stay at their place for the weekend! I also began to publicize the Youth Rally to all the churches in the Hill Country District. I was very worried that no one was going to show up to the concert because Burton is not a known musician, and his style of music is different than what is popular here in the states. God just laughed at me and sent about 150 children, youth and adults to the concert. And everyone had a blast worshipping God! There were so many blessings from Burton’s weekend here that I couldn’t ever have imagined. Besides the fact that he was here, Gail and Paul were here too. Though Burton travels a lot with Praying Pelican Mission organization, Gail has never been to the states, and Paul has never been to Texas. All weekend the three of them kept asking me questions about how we live here in Texas. They were like kids at Disney World when I took them into BassPro Shop, taking pictures with all the mounted animals. Star Wars at the IMAX Theater was a huge hit as well. We had the opportunity to meet the Young Adult group at Hondo’s on Friday night and introduce Burton, Gail and Paul to some real Texas Swing music provided by Doug Moreland and the Flying Armadillos. To watch Burton and Paul as they were mesmerized by the music and the musicians was a real treat for me.
Another blessing from the weekend was to see how well our church received Burton and his music. God really used Burton to show us that it’s not how you use your gifts for God, it’s just that you use them for God. And, man, did God bless us through Burton’s gifts. There was another unexpected blessing after church on Sunday. Pastor George invited us all to Hondo’s for lunch and some local Gospel music. As we sat there enjoying the beautiful day and listening to the music, the band took a break. George came over to Burton and Paul and said, “You guys are up.” We all kind of laughed thinking George was just joking, but he was not. He had talked to the gospel band and they had invited the guys to sing a few songs. Everyone was floored by this invitation and after a few minutes the guys were on stage preparing to perform. I was a little worried about how the crowd was going to respond, but the guys had the crowd clapping,
dancing and praising God. These two guys from Belize were bringing the house down at the famous Hondo’s on Main in Fredericksburg, Texas! God made that happen! As I took Burton, Gail and Paul to the next part of their journey, Burton shared with me how grateful he was for the opportunity to come and share his heart and gifts with us. He said to me, “There have been many people who have said to me ‘Come to my church in the states. We will make it happen.” But this is the only time it has ever really happened. Thank you and your church so much for everything!” There are too many blessing from Burton’s visit, big and small, for us to count. I know two things I will take away from his visit. God’s love is amazing! And God is so Big! Joel has served as director of Youth Ministries at FUMC since August of 2012, and has been in full-time youth ministry for 15 years. Joel’s passion is to see teenagers connect with the love that God has for them. fredumc.org 6

he ninth year of Kid’s Music Academy is underway and has been since September. We have already seen a large group of kids from our community that have joined us and even more starting this semester. Coordinating schedules and combining resources with the Pioneer Club continues to help us enable even more children to participate in our *free* musical training to the Fredericksburg community. The idea of offering music education at no charge to families in our town is one of the most important goals of KMA - that any family in our community can afford to have their child involved in a quality music school that is available without having to spend their own funds. Even though the cost of the general Kid’s Music Academy classes is still free, in order to offer 7

instrumental lessons taught by professional instructors, we have to compensate the teachers for their time. For children who wish to take lessons on violin and guitar, there is a tuition of $50 per month, or $150 for the fall and $200 for the spring semesters. For the past 5 years, we have offered scholarships to any family that requests help in order to supplement the cost of the instruction. These scholarship funds come directly from gifts given through members of our own congregation, which then pay for the cost of the student lessons. We again are looking for help from our church family to invest in a child’s instrumental instruction by contributing to the KMA scholarship program and sponsoring all or part of the $200 spring tuition. Checks can be made out to FUMC with Kid’s Music Academy noted at the bottom. Please give in an envelope labeled KMA.
We are now officially a satellite school of the Hill Country Youth Orchestra program in Kerrville, which gives these children a super-highway to continue their instruction through high school graduation playing their instruments in a large symphonic ensemble. Many of these graduates are offered partial or full scholarships to major universities around the country just to play in the college’s orchestra while working on a degree of the student’s choice. The HCYO has instruments for families to rent, and a few instruments are available here at our church. There are additional costs for violin students for supplies, which the FUMC music budget has provided for. For the past eight years, KMA has given music instruction to over 150 children from our community. Most of these children continue in music training over two years, some even five and six years. Many of these children have gone on to join orchestra, band or choir ensembles in the Junior High and High School, having begun their musical life through a ministry of our church.
Fredericksburg United Methodist Church has indeed contributed in a huge way to the lives of children and moved them along to a real understanding of God’s love and how to return our thanks and praise through music. It is indeed a privilege for God to have placed this ministry in our hands - now it’s up to us to continue it into the future! You know that we are always looking for new faces and smiles in our musical groups, come and join your talents with ours as we lift up praise to our God! You are loved and needed, for sure. So if you find yourself feeling run down and in need of a lift, don’t forget….fuel your fire, join a choir! If you have any questions please email me at don@fredumc.org, or call me at 997-7679… To God Be the Glory!! Don Doss joined the FUMC staff in April of 2007 having served in several other Boerne and Kerrville churches. Don is FUMC’s Director of Music Ministries, and he oversees all of the musical groups and music ministry work that happens here. He personally directs the Chancel Choir and the Praise Team as well as the Kid’s Music Academy.

ello Church! Your friendly neighborhood communications director here. Fun fact, and several of my coworkers might have my head for this as many of them have February birthdays, I really am not a fan of the month of February. I don’t know what it is. Maybe it’s that the novelty of the new year has worn off, and I’ve already failed to achieve at least half of my resolutions. Or maybe it’s because I have a profound distaste for the commercialized lovey dovey Valentine’s day nonsense that pops up all over the place immediately after the holiday season. Maybe it’s because it’s typically cold and we’re ready for some spring warmth and new growth and February just feels stunted. Maybe it’s because NFL football season ends until the Fall. I just know when it comes to months, February is my least favorite.
“
and kind eyes. I recited the long-memorized liturgy from my childhood, stood and sang the hymns from the hymn book and listened intently to the homily. The next week, I went back. And then the week after that, I went back again. I don’t know what I was looking for, but I knew where I was going to find it. On Ash Wednesday I woke up several hours earlier than normal, and went to the 6 a.m. service before my first class. No thinking. No negotiating with myself. I just wanted to go, so I did. I don’t remember exactly what the message was, but I remember leaving with a prayer guide for the season of Lent, and the prayer for that day planted a seed. Something about the discipline of Lent resonated with me, and instead of arbitrarily “giving something up,” I resolved to be kinder, use more thoughtful language, complain less and find more to be thankful about, and things immediately started to look up from there.
Like I love Lent a lot, friends.
But when I really think about it, February has always been a month of growing my faith and really digging into my relationship with God. All of that other stuff that makes me not like February, makes me hungry for grace and hope and peace and Christ’s love. In fact, I love the season of Lent for that very reason. Like I love Lent a lot, friends. My sophomore year of college was rough, to put it mildly. By February, and those of you who have experienced winter in the Midwest know how long and miserable that season can be anyway, I was at the point where there was literally nothing else I could possibly think to do to figure things out but go to church. I had never in my life gone to church of my own accord before. I walked the few blocks to St. Patrick’s Catholic Church just north of where I lived in Greek Town and slipped into a back pew. The service was not crowded. The congregation was demographically very similar to FUMC’s. The priest had white hair
”
I still didn’t understand fully what it meant to have a relationship with Jesus, but I knew something was missing from my life, which working at camp a few months later eventually filled in for me. Since that first impulse that brought me into my Chicago sanctuary, the desire for more has not gone away. So Lent and I have a special relationship with one another. For me it’s a time of stripping away all the distractions, and barriers and things of the world that distance us from God and focusing solely on His will. I hope you are each blessed this Lenten season. I hope it is a time of growth and spiritual discipline, and that the Lord whispers truth into your heart and that we move forward together as a church, confident of God’s calling in our lives. I love you deeply, friends. And Jesus loves you better. Peace, Tricia fredumc.org 12

COFFEE FOR CAMP empowering local ministries
M
y son, Josh Marburger, and other Young Life organization persons, have been working for a year on the re-branding and improved marketing of the coffee from the Young Life camp, “La Finca”, in Nicaragua. The first obvious change is the name. Beyond Beans products will no longer be available, but rather all products will be purchased through 41&Change.
The restructuring will have several benefits. First of all, it will remove from Young Life program staff the burden of responsibility for the coffee, and transfer that responsibility to a more business-like, autonomous “foundation-type” board of directors, who will be seeking to extend this model to other countries where Young Life has ongoing ministries. Hence, the name change, to allow for the inclusion of products other than coffee. The name “41&Change” is derived from the year Young Life was founded…1941 (celebrating 75 years of ministry this year, now reaching over 600,000 youth worldwide)….and the fact that they are indeed “changing” lives. The re-branding is also giving them the opportunity to modernize their products and packaging. Instead of the one pound bags used for Beyond Beans, the standard new package will be a 12 oz., re-sealable pouch, with an “air-expressing” valve, to help maintain better freshness. For institutions, restaurants, etc., there are also 5 pound bags available. They will be offering five different coffees, each available either as whole bean or ground (up until now, we have had a very limited supply of ground coffee for the more casual coffee drinkers, who do not have a coffee grinder at home). These choices will include the traditional light and dark roast selections that we have had (but now as blends with premium coffees from locations other than La Finca, to further enhance the flavor), and other coffees that we have not previously had
available, including an espresso and a decaf. And, one more highly anticipated product: K-cups (in a 36 count box)! We plan to order fresh-roasted coffee each month, ensuring even better quality to an already exceptional coffee! By ordering each month, we can also respond to consumer demand and requests. A very important change: When we were selling Beyond Beans coffee, all profits above the base cost of the coffee was going to support Young Life Nicaragua, primarily to help send youth to camp. The new “41&Change” program is structured to encourage organizations like FUMC to use the coffee sales as a fundraiser for themselves. Therefore, from the profits on the coffee we will now be selling, typically $1.00 will go back to Nicaragua, and the rest ($5.00 on most of the 12 oz. pouches) will stay with FUMC. Now here is where the possibilities are limited only by the enthusiasm and participation of our congregation. If the Mission Ministries team continues to have the full responsibility for coffee sales, the proceeds will become theirs to disperse as they see fit (and most likely their energies will be exhausted, and they will not be able to maintain the program). Mission is proposing that other groups or community organizations take responsibility of the coffee sales at the church for two to four month blocks of time, and the proceeds then go to that endeavor. An added bonus is that that group gets that time to present themselves to our congregation, with the potential for garnishing additional financial and volunteer support. We are looking for this kind of participation immediately. Any group that is interested in participating can contact Brenda Miiller, Missions chairperson, or any member of the Missions team. Join the Home Team The Staff and Church council have been working to streamline the identity and focus of our church. As we continue to seek God’s calling for us, we are asking for volunteers to help us move forward adopting “home” as the word uniting our mission and ministries to create new disciples for Jesus. If you are interested in offering your talents and visions to that process, please contact Tricia Small at tricia@fredumc.org, or Don Doss at don@fredumc.org fredumc.org 18
