Abortion can be spontaneous or induced, legal or illegal depending on the context within which it occurs. While spontaneous abortion occurs due to external factors, the induced abortion occurs due to the decision of the mother. Illegal abortion is contrary to law while legal abortion is allowed by law. The subject of abortion is very contentious in the world today. According to proponents of abortion, the fetus has no right to life. Abortion opponents argue otherwise. There are many reasons behind the argument that abortion is immoral. For instance, Catholic Bishops argue that taking another person’s life is immoral and the fetus is human hence abortion is immoral. Several factors have been mentioned as influencing abortion. The most prevalent factor is economic difficulty, which is cited by most women who decide to commit abortions (United Nations, 2004).

For young women who are not pregnant, there have been claims that economic factors could lead to pregnancy termination. Various efforts have been made to sensitize women against abortion. For instance, the advocacy for abstinence and birth control measures have all led to the reduction in abortion rates (Cook & Dickens, 2010). Similarly, provision of information regarding the potential impacts of abortion on the mothers’ life has also led to reduced abortion rates even though some women give birth and end the children’s lives due to fear. Other factors such as lack of abortion funding and mandatory ultrasound checks prior to abortion can also help to reduce abortion rates (George, 2010). Unsafe abortions occur throughout the world due to many factors which include restrictive laws and economic limitations. In most cases, women who undergo unsafe abortions visit unqualified professionals and/ or conduct the abortions themselves and have no access to post abortive care. Since all abortions contribute negatively to the economy of the country, the factors that result in their increase should be monitored. Restrictive laws, lack of access to safe abortion facilities, and the lack of financing for safe abortions all have the potential of enhancing the perpetration of unsafe abortions. Registration and publication of abortion clinics can help women who are in dire need of the services. While registering as abortion clinics, all facilities should ensure that they have sufficient capacity to provide post abortive care to their patients. As a recommendation, it is necessary to conserve human life from conception to death no matter what the consequences might be. Abortion should not be a threat to human life as starvation, illness and domestic violence are. The preservation of human life should take precedence over all other factors. However, in cases where the mother’s life is at risk, it is essential to preserve at least one life. Therefore, all the professionals handling such mothers should work together with the mothers to exhaust all alternatives for preventing abortion. On the other hand, those who commit abortions due to financial strains should be tried as murderers (Cook & Dickens, 2010). In conclusion, the support of abortion by law does not mean that the rates of abortion will reduce. However, constant provision of effective birth control methods will help families to space children while also helping women to avoid unplanned pregnancies rather than having to incur abortions. Since abortion is a topic that will never end, it is important that effective post abortive support and counseling be provided to women who have committed abortions to help reduce the trauma associated with the process and thus make the women more psychologically prepared to handle other pregnancies when the need comes (Sedgh et al., 2007).
