CULTURAL SEASON FREE TIMES’ COMPREHENSIVE CALENDAR OF THE ARTS

S

ince the dawn of time, Free Times has been producing a comprehensive annual calendar of the arts. (OK, not really, but it does seem that way.) And in all those years, we have never — not even once — published this calendar as a stand-alone insert. Why now, you ask? Well, why not? Here’s our thinking: We know you’re a highly engaged, well-informed reader who is well aware that Columbia has a dynamic and burgeoning arts scene. We know that you’re interested in attending events and programs throughout the year. What we don’t know is whether all of you have actually been keeping a copy of the Cultural Season edition throughout the arts season. After all, that other weekly content does get a bit dated as time goes by. So, here goes: You hold in your hands the first-ever freestanding Cultural

Season insert. In it you’ll find listings for hundreds of arts-related events, including arts exhibitions; classical, choral and opera performances; films; theatrical productions; dance performances; literary events; and more. Now, let’s suppose you’re not an avid arts aficionado. Maybe you feel more comfortable in movie theaters, bars and football stadiums than in galleries and performance halls. In that case, a bit of an explanation is in order. See, Columbia has a lot going on in the arts — and you need not be scared by the word “arts,” because there’s plenty of beer and partying among arts types, too. For proof, just head to the Arts & Draughts series at the Columbia Museum of Art (see page 23) or one of the monthly First Thursday art crawls on Main Street (see Frame of Mind on page 12).

CULTURAL SEASON 2013-14

You might think of these events as the equivalent of a gateway drug: Try one of them, and pretty soon you’ll be hooked — and moving on to more and more arts events. If you’re already into the arts, then you already know the value of our Cultural Season calendar; you might as well just pull up your Google Calendar right now and start planning your next six months. If you’re new to the area or a newcomer to the arts, though, then think of the Cultural Season issue as your official welcoming committee. For further information about specific events, your best bet is to follow organizations’ web sites and Facebook pages — and to check the pages of Free Times weekly. Of course, schedules sometimes change, so be sure to check with the specific organization or venue as dates approach. — Dan Cook

JEFFREY DAY’S PICKS

T

his has already been a big year for Columbia-based composer John Fitz Rogers. His Book of Concord premiered this summer in Vermont and Narragansett was premiered by the USC Wind Ensemble in March. Up next is what we’re calling the John Fitz Rogers Festival. The Southern Exposure New Music Series Rogers founded at USC will honor the composer with a concert of his works on Nov. 11. The music goes back as far as 1986, although most pieces are of more recent vintage. Jim O’Connor, recently retired professor and former chairman of the USC Department of Theatre and Dance, is hardly retiring. He’ll direct two exceptionally well-written, complex thought-provoking and entertaining plays at Trustus Theatre this season: David Ives’ Venus in Fur (opening Nov. 1) and Clybourne Park, opening in January.

Don’t go to the Annie Leibovitz exhibition at the Columbia Museum of Art expecting her elaborately staged photos of celebrities for Vanity Fair or glossy advertising work for American Express. For Pilgrimage, the photographer explored places, people and the visual world which shaped her: the homes of Thomas Jefferson, Emily Dickinson and Pete Seeger, Niagara Falls, Walden Pond and the Yosemite Valley. Opening Oct. 4. Last year the USC-based Wideman/ Davis Dance collaborated with SLIPPAGE, a Duke University research group that delves into technology and performance to create CANE. The work was inspired by Jean Toomer’s experimental 1923 book Cane, constructed as series of vignettes alternating among narrative prose, poetry and play-like passages revolving around the origins and experiences of AfricanAmericans. Dec. 3 – 6. It has been a long, long time since the disturbed young prince of Denmark trod the boards in Columbia. The first full production of Hamlet in Columbia since 1989 will be staged in April by USC Theatre. The second S.C. Biennial at the 701 Center for Contemporary Art is particularly exciting because it will include some artists who have been around for a long time, but have not shown widely in the state recently, along with some younger artists who aren’t as well known as they should be. The first installment opens Sept. 5.

John Fitz Rogers Held in April in the little town of Lake City, the first Artfields exhibition in awarded prizes of $50,000 and $25,000 and was made up of hundreds of artworks from throughout the Southeast scattered around the town in former warehouses, barber shops, restaurants and furniture stores. Much of the work was outstanding, and it was great to see art outside of museum and gallery walls. Expect it to take a big leap forward when it rolls around in April. There’s no lack of great chamber music in these parts. But the young Parker Quartet in an amazing concert in the spring showed that it can get even better. The quartet, in residence at the School of Music, will be back for a concert in November. Although it has been in the traditional arts business for three decades, the University of South Carolina’s McKissick Museum just this summer dedicated space to a long-term exhibition. The first installment, Diverse Voices: Discovering Community Through Traditional Arts, is a wide-ranging look at some of the magnificent works made by the state’s craftspeople including ceramics, baskets, quilts and even a boat. As in most everything else, women don’t get the attention they deserve as composers. The University of South Carolina School of Music alleviates that a bit with an October concert of music written by women. Well-know composers Libby Larsen, Rebecca Clarke and Jennifer Higdon as well as Columbia’s own Sonia Jacobsen will be on the bill.

Box Office Hours: Wed-Thur-Fri 2–5pm and performance nights 6:30–7:30pm The Cambridge American Stage Tour returns to Columbia College with Shakespeare’s timeless drama Measure for Measure. “Hilarious and tragic by turn, this production will hurl audiences into modern day Vienna with vigour and passion. Look forward to a whirlwind of political corruption, sex and scandal, justice and mercy.”

entertains • educates • enriches • excites

The South Carolina Philharmonic is thrilled to present its 50th season. Tremendous growth and change characterize the Midlands’ past 50 years, but the SCP is proud to stand as a constant – through bulls, bears, tragedy, and triumph. Only significant community support past and present makes such a thing possible while orchestras of all ages and sizes fail across the country.

It’s a season of celebration, planned and presented to entertain, educate, enrich, and excite

Our orchestra’s roots proudly intertwine with the Midlands. We are eager to present a unique 50th season that appeals to, and celebrates, this unique community … our community.

Gettysburg South Carolina in the Fight

– but mostly thank –

you.

DAN COOK’S PICKS Brian Sanders’ JUNK Harbison Theatre: Oct. 18 Acrobatic physicality. Found objects; thought-provoking sets and stage design; daring contemporary dance; acrobatic physicality. This is a once-in-a-season type of show. Chamber on Main Columbia Museum of Art: Oct. 31 Yes, we’re a sucker for the music of Estonian composer Arvo Pärt. And yes, it’s on this program. Cellist and series director Edward Arron has done a phenomenal job with the Chamber on Main series, maintaining the high standards set by Charles Wadsworth while gently pushing into new territory. TwoSense USC School of Music: Oct. 11 It’s a cutting-edge piano-cello duo at the always-amazing Southern Exposure series. What else do you need to know? Willie Nelson Newberry Opera House: Oct. 22 One of the towering figures of American country music plays a 409-seat theater? You can’t go wrong with that. Zombie Roving at the Fair Unbound Dance Company: Oct. 11-12, 14 Sure, the whole zombie thing is pretty played out at this point. But these are zombies at the South Carolina State Fair. How awesome is that?

The Art of Political Cartooning USC Hollings Library: Through Dec. 20 You live in South Carolina. No state offers better fodder for great political cartoons. Magna Mysteria Trinity Episcopal: Jan. 26 Upon its premiere, Free Times classical reviewer David Lowry wrote that this piece by John Fitz Rogers would one day join the ranks of important American choral works. To which I would only add that the depth, breadth and sophistication of Rogers’ vision far surpasses most of the American choral music I’ve heard. Bottom line: You owe it to yourself to hear Magna Mysteria. The Second City’s Happily Ever After Harbison Theatre: Feb. 1 When people get famous, everybody likes to say, “I saw them when ... .” To see them “when,” you have to go to shows like this. Beauty is Embarrassing Columbia Museum of Art: Sept. 13 Wayne White used to do illustrations for newspapers. Then he designed sets for Pee-wee’s Playhouse. Then he served as art director for music videos by The Smashing Pumpkins and Peter Gabriel. Now he’s a painter and sculptor. What are we trying to say? He’s done a lot more than most of us, and it’s all worth learning about. Happy Hour History Tours Historic Columbia: Ongoing Drink beer. Learn about your city. Sounds like a good combination.

This four-day hunka-hunka burnin’ fun aims to crown a winner and send him (or her, perhaps) to Memphis for the Ultimate Elvis Tribute Contest. Wayne White: Beauty is Embarrassing Columbia Museum of Art: Sept. 13 If Yankee Stadium is the house that Ruth built, then Pee-wee’s Playhouse is the house that Wayne White built. White, an Emmy Award-winning artist, was a struggling cartoonist in New York City when he helped created the iconic images of Pee Wee’s Playhouse. White gives a TED-style talk at the museum following a screening of Beauty is Embarrassing, a film about White’s life’s work. Japan and the Jazz Age Columbia Museum of Art: Feb. 8-April 20 Yeah, Annie Leibovitz is awesome, and Pilgrimage, which includes 78 new and deeply personal photographs taken by the legendary Leibovitz, looks cool. But Japan and the Jazz Age, which explores the sometimes contradictory crossover between Art Deco and traditional Japanese folk art as Japan rapidly modernizes and Westernizes during the Taisho period boom, looks even cooler.

yMusic Southern Exposure New Music Series: March 21 This year’s Southern Exposure New Music Series is as jam-packed with talent as ever, but this season saves the best for last; contemporary classical group yMusic had been lauded by NPR, Pitchfork, Paste and The New York Times. You Can Haz Cheezburger Harbison Theatre: March 21 Of all the memes the Internet has ever memed, a seemingly disproportionate number of the best have featured cats. Named after the granddaddy of them all — a stout shorthair upon whose picture the phrase “I CAN HAZ CHEEZBURGER?” was superimposed — You Can Haz Cheezburger is the celebration and send-up of all things cat video. Evil Dead: The Musical Trustus Theatre: June 20-July 26 While this Trustus Theatre production likely won’t have the big-budget theatrics of its Off-Off-Broadway big brother, it’ll still boast the bad jokes, dismembered limbs and off-the-wall humor that made the original film series a cult classic. Plus: How can a musical with a number called “What the F#!k Was That” be all bad?
