or parents of young teens, figuring out where they should be in the summer can be a challenge. You might be OK with leaving your 13-year-old at home alone for short periods of time, but what about all day, every work day? Probably not. Lucky for you, there are options for this age group beyond finger-painting with 6-year-olds. Before you enroll, though, ask some questions. Some camps advertise wide age ranges, from small children up to older teens. Find out what that really means: Will 5-year-olds and 15-year-olds be grouped together, working on the same projects with the same instructor? If so, you’ll probably want to look elsewhere.

Adventure Carolina Adventure Camp June 11-15, July 9-13. For ages 9-15. Canoeing, kayaking, backpacking, tubing and wilderness survival skills. $250. Adventure Carolina: 1107 State St. 796-4505, adventurecarolina.com.

On the other hand, there’s nothing wrong with wide age ranges if the campers will be divided into age- and skill-appropriate subgroups. As always, you should talk to other parents in addition to talking to camp organizers. Ask your friends and colleagues where they’ve sent their kids, and how it went. The experience of other parents is invaluable in helping you determine which camps will really enhance your child’s experience and which ones you might end up wishing you hadn’t signed up for. Below is just a small sampling of teenoriented camps you might want to look into. More options follow in our Summer Camps Guide.
