Welcome to the sixth annual Viva La Vista. Showcasing our wonderful Vista restaurants, Viva La Vista is a day of food, drink, music and fun for the whole family. This year, consider it the best tailgate party ever! Enjoy Viva La Vista, then head on in to your favorite Vista establishment to catch the USC/Georgia football game. Here are a few things you will need to know to make the most out of your day.

New this year — for an extra measure of safety and security and because we've got more music than ever, Viva La Vista is a gated event with a ticket needed for admission. Get your tickets in advance at vivalavistasc.com or purchase them in the Vista at Pearlz or Carolina Ale House.

Be sure to designate a driver if you’re drinking or use Checker Yellow Cab to get home. The Alert Cab program will be operating during Viva La Vista from 3 until 6pm.

Be sure to visit the St. Peter’s Catholic School Kid’s Corner, under the canopy at the corner of Gervais and Lincoln streets. Balloonopolis will be making all sorts of fun things with balloons and Sarah Dippity will be on hand for the best face-painting around, free from 11am until 2pm. There will also be sidewalk chalk and plenty of other games and activities to keep the little ones busy and happy. Children’s favorite Lunch Money plays on the Senate Street Stage from 11until 11:45am.

Music has always been a part of Viva La Vista, but this year for your listening, jamming and dancing pleasure, we have a full lineup of local and regional bands leading up to our headlining performance of the day with the Grammy Awardwinning reggae band, The Wailers.

THE WAILERS 3–4:30 The Wailers are heralded as one of the last great reggae institutions, history in the flesh, continuing to tour and breathe new life into their universally loved catalog of reggae’s greatest hits.

There is no more legendary band in Jamaican music history than The Wailers. Formed in 1969, the group has created an extraordinary body of work whose echoes are heard in every corner of the world today. Original members included the man hailed as “The Artist of the 20th Century,” Bob Marley and his vocal partners Bunny Wailer and Peter Tosh, alongside the ground-breaking rhythm section of the Barrett brothers, Carlton on drums and Aston “Family Man” on bass. Today Aston leads the band as it continues its worldwide campaign of promoting peace, love and equality through the message of reggae and Rastafari.

History with Bob Marley In 1970, Bob, Bunny and Peter joined forces with the Barrett Brothers in the studio of famed producer Lee “Scratch” Perry, the Upsetter. When they parted company with Perry, the Barrett brothers decided to leave with them. “They were the best vocal group,” recalls Family Man, “and we were the best rhythm section, so we just decided to come together and mosh up the world.” That they did in a way that none of them could ever have predicted.

To date, The Wailers have sold over a quarter of a billion albums, including seven top-ten entries on the British pop charts.

At the millennium, The Wailers’ 1977 masterpiece, “Exodus,” was chosen by Time magazine as the best album of the 20th century. It contained Bob’s anthem, “One Love,” called the “Song of the Millennium” by the BBC,

which played it every hour for 24 hours during its globe-spanning coverage of the turn of the century. The Grammys bestowed upon him a posthumous Lifetime Achievement Award and he received a star on Hollywood Boulevard.

Marley passed away from melanoma cancer at the age of 36 in 1981, instructing the band to carry on his mission. Family Man, the rock hard foundation of The Wailers’ sound, has led the band through various incarnations ever since. Because he was the arranger and co-creator of Marley’s finest works throughout the 1970s, hearing him play the Wailers’ songs today is the closest one can come to experiencing the excitement of those immortal performances during Bob’s lifetime.

Post Marley The current lineup includes the veteran keyboardist Keith Sterling, a veteran of ‘70s studio greats, the Soul Syndicate, as well as Peter Tosh’s Word Sound and Power band. He is so respected by his colleagues in The Wailers that they call him “Coach.” Fams’ young son, Aston Jr., a multi-talented musician, plays organ and is the heir apparent, helping bring the music forward to a new generation. Filling the role of lead singer is a highly disciplined young Jamaican star on the rise, Dwayne Anglin, known as Danglin. Of particular note, he is a Navy veteran who already holds a masters degree in criminology and is actively pursuing a Ph.D. in that field, while nightly bringing audiences to their feet in loud acclaim for his

vocal prowess. “Drummie Zeb” excels on percussion. He is a founding member of Chicago’s Awareness Art Ensemble, and has toured with Kenny Chesney. Lead and rhythm guitar and backing vocals are handled expertly by Audley “Chizzy” Chisholm. Backing vocals are also supplied by the elegant Trinidadian Cegee Victory.

Their tight and historically sensitive blend was never more apparent than at the beginning of 2013 during The Wailers’ “Survival Revival” tour of North America, on which the band reproduced what many critics consider Marley’s most profound statement of his personal philosophy, 1979’s “Survival” album.

Never ones to be pigeonholed in the past, The Wailers reaffirmed their continuing relevance and versatility in modern music with a guest spot on country superstar Kenny Chesney’s hit single, “Everyone Wants to Go to Heaven,” and also appeared in a video for the song which was shot in Jamaica. They have just rejoined him for a new single called “Spread the Love,” released in June of 2013.

Now well into their fifth decade, The Wailers truly are living legends who embody the nobility, conviction and progressiveness of Bob Marley and his music. “Our music is the magic,” says Fams “the oxygen of the people.

It’s the message of roots, culture and reality, meant to spread peace and love to all.”

Viva La Vista TEN TOES UP 11–11:40

LUNCH MONEY 11–11:45 Lunch Money brings the indie rock experience to family audiences with an energetic, musical salute to the stuff of childhood: blowing bubbles, pushing buttons, going to the library and getting dizzy. They have songs in regular rotation on SiriusXM Radio and have played venues and festivals around the United States, including Austin City Limits Festival and Lollapalooza. Their most recent album Spicy Kid was released on Squirrel Mechanic Records last summer.

Lunch Money began performing in 2003 when singer/guitarist Molly Ledford (previously of The Verna Cannon) decided to try her hand at bringing the live music experience to young audiences. She enlisted fellow Verna Cannon bandmate Jay Barry (drums) and J.P. Stephens (bass) to form Lunch Money, the name chosen to honor that first taste of childhood independence and power. In 2010, trombonist Russell Ramirez joined the band.

CAPITAL CITY PLAYBOYS

1–1:40 “There might not be a better party band in South Carolina than the Capital City Playboys.” –Free Times The Capital City Playboys won’t compromise when it comes to partying. Roaring through rockabilly with a dirty garage edge, the Playboys throw out come-ons so fast there’s no chance to reply. Just bob your head along.

Led by guitarist and frontman Marty Fort and anchored by longtime scene members Jay Matheson on bass and Kevin Brewer on drums, this is a talented group playing for nothing more than a good time.

76 AND SUNNY 12–12:40 Seventy Six and Sunny is an alternative pop-rock band from Columbia, SC formed in the spring of 2012 by guitarist/ lead vocalist Austin Lang and drummer David Kesling. A long time friend of Lang and Kesling, Tim Byrd was introduced in the summer of 2012 as the band’s keyboardist. Jawann Stuckey completed the lineup by becoming the band’s bassist in October.

The vibe of Seventy Six and Sunny has often times been compared to “college band” sound that dominated the 90’s decade. Seventy Six and Sunny blends together carefully crafted melodies with subtle, hard-hitting rock that showcase talent and musicianship obvious to fans of many different genres and eras.

Ten Toes Up is a funk-infused rock quartet from Murrells Inlet SC. High energy live shows keep fans dancing. With a nod to the rock bands of old, Ten Toes Up incorporates the funk of the 70’s mixed with the blueeyed blues of the Allman Brothers. The instrumentation is percussion heavy with a dual-drumming rhythm section led by bass and guitar.

THE EXECUTIVES 12–1:00 Originally founded in 2008, the Executives started because a group of friends found common ground in each other's music.They quickly gelled and found themselves on tour with The Wailers. Frontman Jordan Miller went on to large success with The Movement, as bassist Britt Barker began full on production and beat making and drummer Drew Corontzes found success in playing as a freelance drummer with some of the most popular electronic DJs in the south. Now The Executives are back as a live act, with brand new music to build from.

LEFTY AT THE WASHOUT

REGGIE SULLIVAN BAND

2–3:00 Since forming in early 2012, The Reggie Sullivan Band has become one of the hottest bands in SC. Their reputation as a wildly entertaining live act grew after the release of their CD Together in June of 2012. The band is building its reputation on a strong work ethic and has been a top draw at local festivals such as Viva La Vista, been featured on radio stations such as WXRY and 92.1 The Palm, and has won competitions such as Building The Band at The Tin Roof. With Reggie Sullivan on bass and vocals, Nick Brewer on keyboards, Zach Bingham on guitar, and Brendan Bull on drums the band is a winning combination.

1:30–2:30 “Lefty at the Washout started out as just wanting to have a good time, and hearing the songs we wanted to hear,” said Charles Wilkie, the band’s singer.

Lefty, which includes Barry Hicks (drums), Rob Grookett (saxophone/keyboards), Jay Foster (bass), Jonohn Taylor (turntables) and Stan Laraque (guitar), plays a sunsoaked blend of reggae and rock, as well as heavier rock.

But Lefty separates itself by not taking its music too seriously. Songs such as “Can’t Come Out” and the title track “Forty to Five,” are summed up by a line in the latter: “kickin’ back and enjoying this life.”

Santa Margherita Prosecco Citrus and doughy on the nose, notes of apricot. Melon and orange on the palette with consistent and pleasing effervescence.

Michael David Sauvignon Blanc Light in body, but full of flavor. Racy with more than a hint of lemon grass and key lime. A hint of white flower and pears and a nice finish.

Loveblock Pinot Gris Layers of musk melon and almond flavors. Finishing dry with great fruitiness, minerality and length with a touch of lime.

Protea Chenin Blanc Hints of pear, citrus and honeysuckle. Lighter, more accessible style for earlier enjoyment.

Zonin Moscato Fruity and very inviting, with intense scents of peaches and exotic fruit.

Fresh and pleasantly sweet with a taste that reveals its varietal characteristic.

Matanzas Creek Sauvignon Blanc An intensely perfumed fresh bouquet of lime, bright pink grapefruit and lemon thyme combined with notes of green melon, pear and papaya. A medium bodied, and fresh food-friendly wine.

Tangley Oaks Chardonnay This wine shows impressive balance and acidity, along with a hint of minerality. Notes of vanilla come through, layered with honey and orange peel.

Danzante Pinot Grigio Rich with aromas of tropical fruit such as papaya and pineapple, followed by delicate floral notes. The aromatic fruitiness continues onto a generous, full-bodied palate that is wonderfully fresh and lively.

La Crema Chardonnay Aromas of Meyer lemon and yellow apple, punctuated by hints of butterscotch and subtle floral notes. The palate adds flavors of juicy yellow plum, lemon curd and vanilla custard.

Murphy Goode Homefront Red Sweet herb, mineral and black cherry qualities with powerful structural elements and an elegant mouth feel.

Catena Malbec Deep aromas of ripe red and dark fruits are joined by delicate violet and lavender notes, with traces of vanilla and mocha.

Markham Merlot Intense floral notes of both Tahitian vanilla and ripe, boysenberry fruit. Vanilla, roasted nut and caramel oak flavors with rich cherry fruit.

Chateau de Sours Rogue Aromas of leather and hints of vanilla, cinnamon, and spice. Ripe and lush merlot with flavors of sherry and raspberries.

Oxford Landing Shiraz The generous palate has flavors of blackberry and plum, complimented by soft, supple tannins with hints of chocolate and spice, and subtle oak influence.

Groth Cabernet Big and lush with huge gobs of fruit in the aroma and flavor. The texture of the wine is soft and supple, typical of Cabernet Sauvignons grown in Oakville.

Marques de Caceras Rioja Nice, refreshingly ripe fruit in the mouth with delicious tannins that confer good body and complexity. Smooth texture charms the palate with long-lasting flavors.

Colavita Pinot Noir Sweet cola and blackberry aromas. Rich flavors of red fruits and a velvety finish.

Rhiannon Red Soft tannins and a slightly jammy mouth-feel with fruit forward flavors of dark cherry, blueberry and raspberry jam with complimentary notes of cocoa.

Kilikanoon Lackey Shiraz Rich and fullbodied with classic Aussie Shiraz character.

Big black fruit, a hint of mint and a savoury depth.
