elcome to an emergency edition of the Mag. With the cancellation of the Geneva Motor Show, cars fans would be a little bit bored. Photographer Andrew Elphick went to Morocco instead. Anyway, if you like Bangers, you just look at any modern motor show through fairly cynical eyes. After all, will anything be truly fixable in the future? Arguably the last time the motor industry made affordable and practical cars for the people? I dunno 1997? That's the year I blagged my way onto the VW Golf Mark 4 launch and persuaded Helga to flaunt herself all over the new, improved model. She's probably a grandmother these days, but she found it all very amusing. I was writing a piece for a long lost mag called Golf Xtreme. As well as celebrating the past we are looking towards an uncertain future as plans are afoot to ban real cars, let alone Bangers, see plugs for Demotorized the book.

ALTERNATIVE TO THE GENEVA MOTOR SHOW
Regular Bangernomics photographer Andrew Elphick had all of his equipment and extensive entourage ready for his European trip to the premier motor show in Switzerland. When it was cancelled, he rapidly made other arrangements and flew to Morocco. What he found and photographed was a remarkable testament to the durabilty of so many vehicles. Certainly the climate helps, although the driving conditions are not always perfect, but what we have here is a different class of Banger. These cars are not celebrated, cherished, or fussed over. Nope, these Bangers get peoperly used. Some are taxis, others used as commercial vehicles, all of though are truly working for a living. It is like the American classics in Cuba, with similar amounts of sunshine, but closer. That's a very tidy looking Renault 5. The Fiat 128 is not so tidy. 4 freecarmag.com

RENAULT 4 - A REAL BLUE JEAN BESTSELLER
Pierre Dreyfus, then president of the RĂŠgie Nationale des Usines Renault, launched the notion of a "blue jeans" car. Like the now-familiar article of clothing which is worn the world over, he wanted to produce a versatile, inexpensive car with a worldwide calling which could match the changes in society that were being observed as the 1960s approached. Following a five-year incubation period, the Renault 4, the make's first front-wheel drive passenger car, was unveiled to the Press before going on display at the 1961 Paris Motor Show. A van and three saloon versions were launched simultaneously. Just six years after its launch, Renault 4 production exceeded the million mark, and other records were broken as the car reached a total production figure of 8,135,424 in the course of its 31-year career.
THE LEGEND OF THE MERCEDES W114 + W123
Everyone in the world will have travelled in the back of one of these at some time. Obviously there was a meeting and all the world’s taxi drivers decided that this was the most sensible, most indestructible, most German car imaginable. Best of all it just looks so cool. Especially if they are beaten up. These Mercedes were over engineered, but that cliche does not do them justice. They were simply properly built.

Here’s a tiny practical car we love. It came out at the 1956 Brussels Motor Show, the Fiat 600 Multipla offered a completely new shape and exceptional interior space. With three rows of seats it could comfortably seat six people or, with four seats folded down, it could offer a large, versatile load space. With its versatility and extraordinary practicality, the “Multipla” became the pride of Italian taxi drivers and families for over a decade. The car exhibited in London is part of the FCA Heritage collection, and is normally on display at the Fiat Historical Center in Turin. That’s a good place to go and see it if you have the time. Obviously when the Corolla virus has settled down a bit.

THE BANGER SHOW
CITY BANGER FIAT PANDA Not for everyone, but what an adorable little box this is. Looks are always improved by random parking dents. Tough little things, the timimg chains may get noisy in the FIRE engines and the engine mounts just a tad wobbly. Rust us of course the main killer. These are now becoming extremely rare. Best obne to find and enjoy is the titchy 4 x 4.
SHOPPING BANGER VW GOLF
SPACIOUS BANGER VOLVO V70
Old school Mark 2 Golf Goodness. This probably peak Golf and they can still be found in relatively solid condition. Non GTIs reasonably priced but it can certainly do a job. Unpretentious, practical and reliable which is all any car owner wants these days. Buy one and keep it forever, just keep on top of the battle against rust.
Because old Volvo estates are easily bought at small car prices. The load bay is flat and wide and with the rear seats folded it becomes a posh van. On the subject of seats you could buy one with optional pull out seats that turn it into a handy 7 seater. The engines routinely rack up huge six figure mileages. Parts can be pricey you can most bits in a scrap yard.
SPORTS BANGER MAZDA MX-5
LUXURY BANGER RANGE ROVER
Rear wheel drive, just enough, but not too much power. Yes the MX5 has got all the classic ‘60s sports car ingredients of simplicity, style and value, brilliantly combined with modern car reliability. In short, this is the roadster that started the ‘90s drop top revolution and still dominates this market today. Older examples rust, but very cheap.
Well this brave, probably the most mechanically and electrically dubious off roaders ever made. Just look at it though. Compared to the awful looking things you see now this is functionally handsome. Also, as this was reasonably dirty it must be reliable enough to use as a daily. Took this pic when they were seriously cheap.

Second Hand 4 x 4
Wagenator It looks like an army surplus special that has been retrofitted for civilian duty by a hard up Stuttgart taxi firm, but what you see is pretty much what you get. Mercedes took the primarily military vehicle and made it a touch more utilitarian. The Mercedes Gelandewagen G-Wagen, or G-Class as it has since been rebadged, soldiers on. As a second hand buy the big G is certainly worth a second look, because you certainly won’t be buying second best.
