A Quest for Freedom Step 1: Building Your Life Vision freedomiseverything.com /2016/04/30/a-quest-for-freedom-step-1-building-your-life-vision/
Building your life vision is the first step on the road to creating the life you truly desire. In my previous article about creating a life of total freedom I introduced the topic of freedom and that it means different things to each of us. For me when I think of the word freedom I think of three main things: –
Monetary freedom
–
Time freedom
–
Location freedom
It may be different for you. Perhaps you desire greater freedom, but that freedom relates to your personal character constraints; ie maybe you want to break free of some of the fears and doubts holding you back. Perhaps you require relationship freedom and the ability to do what you want, when you want, with whom you want. Regardless of the type of freedom you desire, I believe many of us are looking for increased liberty to some extent, in some particular domain of our lives. The first step to claiming the freedom you seek is to build your life vision and, subsequently, your goals.
What is your life vision? Most people never achieve what they secretly want from life because they have been conditioned by society, family, work etc to believe that they must conform to a certain way of living and behaving. The first step then is to spend some time getting rid of all those expectations and start thinking about the kind of life you would ultimately like to design.
Building your life vision Two things to be aware of before starting to design your life vision: 1)
The vision building process takes time to complete and your vision will evolve
2)
You must think about the long term. 10 years or 5 years is a good starting point
When building your life vision you must ‘start with the end in mind’ as the late, great Stephen Covey would have said. What this means is that you need to think about what your ideal life will look like in 5 or 10 years. Think of the following: –
Where do you want to be living?
–
Where do you want to be working?
–
Do you want to be working at all?
–
What do you want to be doing?
1/3
–
Who do you want to be?
–
Who do you want to be with?
–
How do you earn income?
–
How much income?
–
What skills have you developed?
–
What do you want to own
–
What do you want to experience?
What is important when building your life vision is to think deeply about what you (not anybody else) actually want from life. Everybody’s vision is different and trying to take the vision of someone else and transposing it onto your life will never work. Why? Because it is not yours and you therefore will not be passionate enough about it to make it happen! It has to be what you truly want. So for example if I go back to my own case: I firmly believe that freedom, love and health are the three most important things in life. I call them the three pillars and I build my vision around achieving them. For me, I have gotten close to mastery in health due to always being into health and nutrition. Love is something of an ongoing wonderful adventure, which I know I will always have in my life. Freedom was the tricky one. As I mentioned above, freedom to me means money freedom, time freedom and location freedom. I have built those key aspects into my vision for the future. I therefore know where I want to go in life and what I ultimately want to achieve. This in turn leads me to take short term actions which will put me on a path to that kind of freedom. Now you know how important building a life vision is in designing the life of freedom you want. Look out for my next post about the next step in the process: setting your goals based on your vision.
