Introduction to China China is a vast country, a kaleidoscope of people, cultures, customs and landscapes. Although the present day People’s Republic of China only dates back to 1949, records spanning 5000 years show that China has had a long economic and cultural history, with warring states unifying and dividing multiple times. However throughout it’s turbulent history this country has had periods of immense cultural learning, artistic creativity and religious and philosophical development. Importantly China also extensively expanded early trading routes, with the Han Dynasty (207BC – 220AD) first developing what would become the famous Silk Road trade route to India. China’s culture is considered to be the oldest

living culture in the world. Her rich history of trade, arts and culture, combined with the diversity of ethnic groups and their individual food and customs, makes China one of the most interesting places on earth to visit. Travelling through China you can re-live the history and understand how this immense country was born from small tribal states with their own languages and lives, evolved through centuries of upheaval, unification, then liberation in 1949 to become the People’s Republic of China

From the immense modern city of Shanghai to the culturally rich Beijing, from the mountains in Xinjiang to the rice terraces of Guilin, China is a world in itself just waiting to be explored.

B

ecause when you stop and look around this life is pretty amazing."

China NEED TO KNOW • China does not have pharmacies or chemists the same as Western countries have. Make sure you bring a supply of ALL medications you may require, including sunscreen and mosquito repellent. • Medical Insurance is essential for travelling to China. • Do not drink the water in China. Bottled water is always available and is the safest option. Always have a small packet of tissues and hand sanitiser in your bag as well. Toilets do not necessarily supply these. • China is a CASH based society. Make sure you have RMB (Yuan) as other currencies are not accepted. ATM’s are available in most large towns and the international banks such as HSBC will allow for international card withdrawals, but not necessarily in smaller more remote places. Overseas credit cards are not accepted in all locations. Make sure you inform your bank of where you are travelling before you leave, to avoid your card being cancelled mid-trip.

• You can haggle on the price in many places as it is encouraged. • Electrical plugs in China are the same as Australia and New Zealand. It is always easier to buy plug adaptors before you leave, with plug adaptors being difficult to find in some areas of China. There are plenty of apps to download to make your travels in China less stressful* Wechat – a texting and information sharing platform used by virtually all locals and expats Pleco - A Chinese translation tool to make communication hastle-free Metroman – An easy route-planner with accurate mapping & metro information with over 25 cities in China *There is no access to Google, Gmail, Facebook, Twitter and other apps in China without a vpn. It is advisable to get a vpn if you wish to use any of these while on the road.

• There is no tipping in China. Respect and politeness is always appreciated. China Classics | 25
