8 reasons to go to Lviv First reason – history Lviv combines the culture and history of over 10 various nationalities. Throughout its history, Lviv was incorporated in six different states. This is the only Eastern European city where the true Ukrainian architecture is enriched by incredible Italian, Austrian, Polish, and Armenian architecture. Lviv was mentioned for the first time in 1256.

Second reason – location Lviv has an advantageous geographic location: 500 km away from Ukraine’s capital and 500 km away from Warsaw. It is located 70 km away from the Polish border. Its population totals 850 thousand inhabitants. Surface area: 171 square kilometers.

Third reason – architecture In 1998, Lviv was included in UNESCO’s list of world heritage. 366 architectural monuments (55% of all cultural monuments of Ukraine and 1.5 million exhibits; 19% of all exhibits of Ukraine).

Fifth reason – cultural capital This achievement is owed to more than 100 festivals annually held in Lviv (from jazz to the chocolate festival), 60 museums, and 100 churches of various affiliations.

Six reason – promising centre According to research conducted by KPMG, Lviv is on the list of top 30 promising IT centres in the world. Lviv has 30 universities and 170,000 students. Lviv is a city of drive, energy, and inspiration.

Seventh reason – own strategy In cooperation with well-known Monitor Group, Lviv has produced its own development strategy. Two major clusters: tourism and IT. Companies that have developed software for movies such as Hulk, Spiderman operate in Lviv. The number of tourists in Lviv is growing by 40% annually totaling 1 million people. Most tourists come from Poland, Germany, Austria, Belarus, the USA, and Russia.

Eighth reason - EURO 2012 Lviv has won the right to host the final matches of European Championship in 2012. Thus, construction of a new stadium with 33,000 seats is about to be completed. Furthermore, a new airport terminal will be opened soon. Its capacity will amount to one thousand passengers per hour. In addition, more than 50% of all the main roads of the city have been reconstructed in Lviv.

Why in UNESCO? Latin Cathedral (16-18 centuries). Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque styles. The master altar contains the most valuable relic of the temple: a copy of the Miraculous Icon of Our Benign Lady. Armenian Cathedral (14-15 centuries). The architecture and art of Armenian temples with the Romanesque-Gothic style of contemporary Western European and Galician architecture. Mosaics and murals on the walls of the twentieth century are made in the modern style. Bernadine Monastery (17 century). The historical monument of the Renaissance, Mannerism, and Baroque styles. The monastery was built from hewn stones in the form of a basilica with an elongated choir loft and a faceted apse. Dominican Cathedral. A late Baroque majestic architectural monument with an original sculptural decoration. The most precious relic of the temple is a Miraculous Icon of the Virgin Mary, 17 century. St. George Cathedral is called the highest achievement of Lviv Baroque for a good reason. Lviv Opera and Ballet House after S. Krushelnytska (1901). Lviv architectural jewel city of the Neo-Renaissance style. One of the most beautiful theaters in Europe. Lviv National University after Ivan Franko (1877-1881). A Vienna Neo-Renaissance monument. The entrance to the building is decorated with two large allegorical compositions: “Education” and “Work.” The building of the former Austrian parliament, where students are trained to be linguists and mathematicians.

Lviv museums «Shevchenko Wood»: ​​an open-air museum with various attributes of the ancient Ukrainian lifestyle. It includes 54 estates. Lychakiv Cemetery, a museum-reserve with a surface area of ​​40 ha. The cemetery was officially founded in 1786. The oldest tombstone on its territory dates back to 1675. The gem of the Lychakiv necropolis includes 23 chapel-tombs, which were owned by wealthy families in Lviv. Musical Memorial Museum after S. Krushelnytska is located in the former home of the singer. The exhibition rooms of the museum contain original photographs and pieces of stage costumes of the world’s prominent opera star, who happened to save the play «Butterfly».

Lviv Historical Museum is one of the richest museums which includes about 300 thousand exhibits in its funds (books printed by Ukrainian pioneer printer Ivan Fedoriv, the pearls of Lviv art). Museum of Weapons «Arsenal». 5,000 pieces of weapons and firearms from more than thirty countries of the world can be seen in «Arsenal», Ukraine’s unique museum. Lviv Museum of the History of Religion: it contains unique materials of different religions. In particular, silver 11 century Byzantine reliquary, which is a chest for storing the hallows of St. Martyr Antony.
