The Beaverlodge and Valhalla 4H Beef Clubs, which also include members from Wembley, Hythe, LaGlace, Elmworth and Dawson Creek, will be holding their Achievement Day at the Beaverlodge Ag Barns on May 28. At Achievement Day, the members, who range in age from 9 to 21, show their beef projects by competing in a number of classes that highlight their skills and the quality of their projects. Following the day of showing the beef steers, that have been hand fed since the fall, are sold in a public auction.

Buying options

BUY AND EAT The steer can be sent directly to a packer of choice for processing. Commonly used packers are Lawrence’s (Dawson Creek), H&M Meats (Grande Prairie), Beaverlodge Butcher Shop, and Shawn’s Custom Meats (Grande Prairie) Delivery of calves will be accommodated by 4-H to any processer of the buyer’s choice. Cutting and wrapping instructions, and payment for processing to the packer will be the responsibility of the purchaser. WANT TO SUPPORT THE KIDS AND THEIR CLUBS BUT DON’T NEED THE MEAT? The steer can be bought at the sale then sent directly to a packer for re-sale at rail-grade (industry market value) pricing. You are then recompensed at market value for the meat. ONLY WANT ½ OR ¼ OF A BEEF? If a whole beef is too much meat for you, we encourage you to find someone else to partner up with. If you can’t find someone on your own, let us know and we will try to pair you up with someone. CAN’T MAKE IT TO THE SALE BUT WANT TO BUY? Absentee buyers can arrange to purchase through a person of their choosing, or can contact Mark Jacklin (780)882-5456 *payment required evening of the sale BUY AND TAKE HOME The steer can be bought and taken home by the purchaser to feed, resell, process or show again in upcoming steer shows. PAYMENT FOR THE STEER WILL BE REQUIRED THE EVENING OF THE SALE - CHEQUE OR CASH ACCEPTED If you opt to re-sell (rail-grade) and not take the meat, please give your instructions to VJV and subsequent payments will be arranged through them. Credit cards or e-transfer are not available payments.

For your support

Community-minded businesses have long recognized the value of supporting youth in 4-H by purchasing a steer and sponsoring club activities. Companies and Individuals who purchase a steer are recognized on local radio stations, local newspapers, highway billboards, and sale day announcements. While advertising value is noteworthy, supporting 4-H is truly a contribution to the future of our youth, our communities, and the future of agriculture. The 4-H program makes a significant investment in the youth of rural Canada, and has become synonymous with exceptional leadership and community contribution. If you require more information or have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact: Beaverlodge: Mark Jacklin (780)882-5456 or Valhalla: Hugh Atkin (780) 512-3641

WEST COUNTY 4-H MEMBERS GIVE BACK Delwyn Postman Donation Steer ~ 25th Anniversary ~ The Donation Steer initiative originated as an idea of past Valhalla club leader, Delwyn Postman, who had been seeking a way for the members to give thanks to the community for years of support. Tragically, in November of 1992, Delwyn was killed in a motor vehicle accident on his way to the meeting where he was planning to present his idea. In his memory, 4-H members and fellow leaders have continued on with the program ever since. Valhalla and Beaverlodge 4-H Clubs are proud to have raised over $201,000 and donated to over 53 charities during this time. This year all the money raised from the Delwyn Postman Memorial Donation Steer Raffle, as well as any outright donations, will be going to charities that were meaningful to and chosen by the 4-H members. This year those charities are STARS, the Beaverlodge Ag Society and Odyssey House. Each fall a business or family donates a steer to West County 4-H and, alternating year to year, a family from either the Beaverlodge or Valhalla club then volunteer to raise the animal. This involves feeding it twice daily, caring for it, halter breaking it and presenting it for the sale. This year we have a steer was purchased and donated by Jan Postman, feed was donated by Fineline Red Angus (Nick & Lorraine Van Gaalen), and raised by Todd & Lexi Balisky. Join us for our show and sale May 28, 2018 at the Ag Barns in Beaverlodge where you will see all of the West County members promoting 4-H, a program that has taught them both the value of hard work and benefits of helping others. Please help these kids make this a record-breaking year as a tribute to the great man whose idea started it all.

Raffle tickets are $ 10 each

Tickets will be available for purchase throughout Achievement Day. Raffle winner to be announced immediately following the sale.
