SESSION TWO

Fine Continental Furniture & Decorative Arts sale 1419: lots 220-509 Wednesday, January 25th, 2012

Treasure from a sunken Spanish Galleon Following the conquest of the Americas in the sixteenth century, Spain sent two armadas annually to the New World to charge them with riches. These were the 'New World' and the 'Mainland' fleets, and in the Indies they collected gold and silver bullion and other rare commodities from the Far East and the Americas. After collecting their cargo, the two fleets met at Havana and then readied for the voyage home. They carried with them vast sums of wealth which was to provide fuel for Spain's continuing wars in northern Europe and fill the empty Spanish coffers depleted by the ongoing strain of domestic debt. The Nuestra Senora de Atocha was a galleon of the 'New World' fleet that sailed from Spain in March, 1622. Prior to its return journey, the main cargo of the sunken treasure galleon was 500 pounds of gold, thirty-five tons of silver bullion, 400 bales of indigo, tobacco, and 30,000 pounds of copper. Also amongst her bounty were numerous small jewels, pieces of gold jewelry, and secular Spanish silver plate owned by her forty-eight passengers and 220 crewmen. While also subject to attacks from pirates and the Dutch and English fleets, the foremost problem that beset the Spanish on their annual round-trips were the fierce Atlantic tropical storms. It was a hurricane that wrecked the Atocha and a companion ship, the Santa Margarita, off the coast of Florida on September 4th 1622. Immediate and desperate attempts by the Spanish to rescue the treasure were unsuccessful. Over the next three centuries, the location and the history of the Atocha was largely forgotten, until the search was taken up by treasure-hunter Mel Fisher in 1963. After two decades, and the loss of his son and daughter- in-law to drowning during the search, he found it on July 20th, 1985. In 1988, Christie's held a two-day sale that included hundreds of silver bars, gold bars and artifacts from the Atocha and Santa Margarita wrecks. The vendor of the following five lots purchased them from this sale. Freeman's is happy to be offering them on their behalf.

220 11-1982/1 A silver bar recovered from the wreck of the nuestra senora de atocha in 1985 Fineness 2380/2400. Class 1.0 B. Rodriguez to self. 39 lb., 3.68 oz. (572.1 oz Troy) provenance: Christie’s New York June 14th and 15th, 1988 note: The system of marking on the silver and gold bars is complex, and was designed to ensure that the “Quinto Real” or Royal Fifth, was paid to the Spanish Crown. In return for this tax payment, the Crown allowed free enterprise to exploit the enormous gold and silver deposits of the New World. An additional mark for the 1 1/2 % tax for the melter, assayer and chief marker was instituted in 1579. All of the bars exhibit the stamp of the arms of Philip IV, other marks present can indicate the fineness, date of issue, assaymaster or foundry. $15,000-20,000

Freeman’s makes no warranty of title, merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose, or any other warranty or representation regarding the description, genuineness, attribution, provenance or condition to the Property of any kind or nature with respect to the Property. 4 Freeman’s in its sole and exclusive discretion, reserves the right to withdraw any property, at any time, before the fall of the hammer. 5 Unless otherwise announced by the auctioneer at the time of sale, all bids are per lot as numbered in the printed catalogue. Freeman’s reserves the right to determine any and all matters regarding the order, precedence or appropriate increment of bids or the constitution of lots. 6 The highest bidder acknowledged by the auctioneer shall be the buyer. The auctioneer has the right to reject any bid, to advance the bidding at his absolute discretion and in the event of any dispute between bidders, the auctioneer shall have the sole and final discretion either to determine the successful bidder or to re- offer and resell the article in dispute. If any dispute arises after sale, the Freeman’s sale record shall be conclusive in all respects. 7 If the auctioneer determines that any opening or later bid or any advance bid is not commensurate with the value of the Property offered, he may reject the same and withdraw the Property from sale.
