Estimates Estimates are printed below each lot and do not include the buyer’s premium. The sale will be conducted in pounds sterling. Dimensions Dimensions are for guidance only; it is the buyer’s responsibility to ensure that they are correct. Buyer’s Premium The buyer shall pay the hammer price together with a premium thereon. Antiques, Jewellery & Silver and Pictures (Not Fine Sales) 20% All other sales (Fine/Special/Collections/ Contemporary) 25% up to £25,000 / 20% thereafter. VAT The symbol † by a lot number indicates that VAT is payable by the purchaser at the standard rate on the hammer price. The symbol * by a lot number indicates that the lot has been temporarily imported from outside the EU and that VAT is payable by the purchaser at the rate of 5% on the hammer price and the buyer’s premium. Droit de Suite This symbol § indicates works which may be subject to the Droit de Suite or Artist’s Resale Right, which took effect in the United Kingdom on 14th February 2006.

We are required to collect a royalty payment for all qualifying works of art. Under new legislation which came into effect on 1st January 2012, this applies to living artists and artists who have died in the last 70 years. This royalty will be charged to the buyer on the hammer price and in addition to the buyers premium. It will not apply to works where the hammer price is less than €1,000 (euros). The charge for works of art sold at and above €1,000 (euros) and below €50,000 (euros) is 4%. For items selling above €50,000 (euros), charges are calculated on a sliding scale. All royalty charges are paid to the Design and Artists Copyright Society (‘DACS’) and no handling costs or additional fees are retained by the auctioneer. Resale royalties are not subject to VAT. Please note that the royalty payment is calculated on the rate of exchange at the European Central Bank on the date of the sale. 1018 FINE GEORGE II CARVED MAHOGANY LIBRARY ARMCHAIR CIRCA 1755 the arched back and serpentine seat flanked by outscrolling arms with foliate and shell carved terminals, over a lattice carved apron centred by a ruffled shell and foliate scrolls, raised on shell and foliate carved cabriole legs ending in scrolled toes, in later green and yellow floral silk upholstery 68cm wide, 92cm high, 51cm deep

Note: The inspiration for this elegant armchair is undoubtedly taken from French fashion of the period as interpreted by a mid 18thcentury cabinet maker. Thomas Chippendale illustrated several examples of ‘French’ chairs in his ‘Gentleman and Cabinet Makers Director published in 1754, and other important cabinet makers of the St. Martin’s Lane Academy worked in this style. The pattern of this chair, with its incised trellis ground, enjoyed considerable popularity in the mid 18th century, making identifying the specific maker a bit of a mystery. The chair is very similar to the well-known suite of seat furniture previously in the collection of Sir John Ward, K.C.V.O of Dudley House. Helena Hayward, the furniture historian, in her 1964 Conoisseur article described the Dudley House suite saying “it would be no exaggeration to claim that no finer example of its period is now known to exist”. Several top London cabinet makers have been put forward as the likely makers of these chairs, including William Bradshaw of Greek Street, Soho, or his partner Paul Saunders who supplied related suites to Hagely Hall Worcestershire and Petworth, Sussex. Other potential candidates include James Whittle, Snr and Samuel Norman of St. Andrew’s Street Soho, as well as William Vile and John Cobb of St Martin’s Lane who supplied related cabriole legged chairs John Chute at the Vyne, Hampshire and the Hon. John Damer of Came House, Dorset. A pair of similar chairs sold Christie’s New York, 11 June 2010, lot 428.

1020 RARE ENGRAVED KING OF PRUSSIA GOBLET CIRCA 1760 the trumpet bowl engraved with a bust portrait of King Frederick the Great in armour, inscribed below the rim ‘SUCCESS TO THE KING OF PRUSSIA’, the plain stem over a folded conical foot 17.2cm high Note: Commemorative wares celebrating the alliance between England and Prussia during the Seven Years War (1756-63) and featuring portraits of Frederick the Great were produced in fairly large numbers during this period, however the vast majority were on porcelain or earthenware. Engraved glasses are much rarer due to the skill required to produce them. A near identical goblet sold Bonhams, London, 16 December 2009, lot 50; and a smaller airtwist example is in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum, C.194-1925.

1022 FD32/5 COLLECTION OF PERSONAL EFFECTS BELONGING TO GENERAL THOMAS GRAHAM, LORD LYNEDOCH comprising an oval gold locket containing a lock of Lord Lynedoch’s hair, engraved ‘Lord Lynedoch’s Hair/ 18 December 1843’ and a coronet over an ‘L’; a maroon silk net purse containing seven shillings, seventeen six pence coins and four four pence coins; and a small parquetry box containing a small gold wedding band (cut); a small leather purse; and a cream leather and gilt almanac in a cream leather slip belonging to Mary Graham Note: According to papers accompanying this lot, the first three items were removed from Lord Lynedoch upon his death in 1843 and kept by his heirs. The gold wedding band, which belonged to his wife, born the Honourable Mary Cathcart, was worn by Graham for over forty years following her untimely death in 1792. The almanac is inscribed in pencil on the interior, presumably in her handwriting ‘M.G. Given to me by Lord Tullibardine, Lady Charlotte & Lady Emily Murray on my birthday’

Note: Lady Christian Hope (1714-1799) was the third daughter of the Charles, 1st Earl of Hopetoun and Lady Henrietta Johnstone. In 1743 she married Thomas Graham of Balgowan. She gave birth to three children but only their son Thomas, later Lord Lynedoch, survived to adulthood. According to an accompanying card, the hair belongs to her three children and her parents.

Adie became his uncle's apprentice in 1789 and his business partner, under the name of Miller and Adie, in 1804. The business continued to flourish after Miller's death in 1815. Adie was predominately interested in meteorological instruments and notably invented the Sympiesometer, or marine barometer, in 1818. Appointed as optician to both William IV and Queen Victoria, his success was formerly recognised when he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 1819. He brought one of his sons, John, into partnership in 1835, while his two of his other sons set up businesses in London and Liverpool. (BRITISH 1825-1892) SIR JOHN SIMEON BART bronze bust, medium brown patina, signed ‘T WOOLNER 1872’ 73cm high Note: Thomas Woolner was a contemporary of Dante Gabriel Rossetti and was noted for being the only sculptor admitted the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. His series of busts and medallions of distinguished men of the day included writers, scientists and politicians, the most acclaimed being his bust of Alfred, Lord Tennyson for Trinity College. The success of his portrait medallion of Wordsworth is credited with restoring the art of medallion portraiture. John Simeon Bart, 3rd Baronet, had a career as a naval officer before returning to the Isle of Wight in 1847 to serve as a Liberal Member of Parliament. In 1851 he resigned his seat after converting to Catholicism, feeling that to not do so would have been a disservice to those who had elected him when he was a member of the Anglican Church. He returned to Parliament in 1865. Bart was a good friend of Tennyson, and it is noted that it was the poet who encouraged Woolner to sculpt the bust.

Lyon & Turnbull carries on business with bidders, buyers and all those present in the auction room prior to, or in connection, with a sale on the following General Conditions and on such other terms, conditions and notices as may be referred to herein. 1. DEFINITIONS In these Conditions: (a) “Auctioneer” means the firm of Lyon & Turnbull or its authorised auctioneer, as appropriate; (b) “deliberate forgery” means an imitation made with the intention of deceiving as to authorship, origin, date, age, period, culture or source but which is unequivocally described in the catalogue as being the work of a particular creator and which, at the date of the sale, had a value materially less than it would have had if it had been in accordance with the description;

(c) “hammer price” means the level of bidding reached (at or above any reserve) when the auctioneer brings down the hammer;

(1) The ownership of any lots purchased shall not pass to you until you have made payment in full to us of the total amount due.

(d) “terms of consignment” means the stipulated terms and rates of commission on which Lyon & Turnbull accepts instructions from sellers or their agents;

(2) You shall at your own risk and expense take away any lots that you have purchased and paid for not later than four working days following the day of the auction or upon the clearance of any cheque used for payment after which you shall be responsible for any removal, storage and other associated charges.

(e) “total amount due” means the hammer price in respect of the lot sold together with any premium, Value Added Tax chargeable and any additional charges payable by a defaulting buyer under these Conditions; (f) “sale proceeds” means the net amount due to the seller, being the hammer price of the lot sold less commission at the stated rate, Value Added Tax chargeable and any other amounts due to us by the seller in whatever capacity and however arising; (g) “You”, “Your”, etc. refer to the buyer as identified in Condition 2. (h) The singular includes the plural and vice versa as appropriate. 2. BIDDING PROCEDURES AND THE BUYER (a) Bidders are required to register their particulars before bidding and to satisfy any security arrangements before entering the auction room to view or bid; (b) the maker of the highest bid accepted by the auctioneer conducting the sale shall be the buyer at the hammer price and any dispute about a bid, which must be raised before the next lot is offered, shall be settled at the auctioneer’s absolute discretion. (c) Bidders shall be deemed to act as principals. (d) Once made, no bid may be withdrawn. (e) Our right to bid on behalf of the seller is expressly reserved up to the amount of any reserve and the right to refuse any bid is also reserved. 3. INCREMENTS Bidding increments shall be at the auctioneer’s sole discretion. 4. THE PURCHASE PRICE The buyer shall pay the hammer price together with a premium thereon. Where two or more commission bids at the same level are recorded we reserve the right in our absolute discretion to prefer the first bid so made. 11. WARRANTY OF TITLE AND AVAILABILITY The seller warrants to the auctioneer and to you that the seller is the true owner of the property consigned or is properly authorised by the true owner to consign it for sale and is able to transfer good and marketable title to the property free from any third party claims. 12. REMEDIES FOR NON-PAYMENT OR FAILURE TO COLLECT PURCHASES (1) If any lot is not paid for in full and taken away in accordance with these Conditions or if there is any other breach of these Conditions, we, as agent for the seller and on their behalf, shall at our absolute discretion and without prejudice to any other rights we may have, be entitled to exercise one or more of the following rights and remedies:

Any surplus so arising shall belong to the seller; (d) to remove, store and insure the lot at your expense and, in the case of storage, either at our premises or elsewhere; (e) to charge interest at a rate of 1.5% per month above the current base rate on the total amount due, to the extent it remains unpaid for more than four working days after the sale; (f) to retain that or any other lot sold to you until you pay the total amount due; (g) to reject or ignore bids from you or your agent at future auctions or to impose conditions before any such bids shall be accepted; (h) to apply any proceeds of sale of other lots due or in future becoming due to you towards the settlement of the total amount due and to exercise a lien (that is a right to retain possession of) any of your property in our possession for any purpose until the debt due is satisfied. representations or statements by us as to authorship, genuineness, origin, date, age, provenance, condition or estimated selling price involve matters of opinion. We undertake that any such opinion shall be honestly and reasonably held and accept liability for opinions given negligently or fraudulently. Subject to the foregoing neither we the auctioneer or our employees or agents or the seller accept liability for the correctness of such opinions and all conditions and warranties, whether relating to description, condition or quality of lots, express, implied or statutory, are hereby excluded. This Condition is subject to the next following Condition concerning deliberate forgeries and applies save as provided for in paragraph 6 “information to buyers”. (2) Private treaty sales made under these Conditions are deemed to be sales by auction for purposes of consumer legislation. 16. FORGERIES Notwithstanding the preceding Condition, any Lot which proves to be a deliberate forgery (as defined) may be returned to us by you within 21 days of the auction provided it is in the same condition as when bought, and is accompanied by particulars identifying it from the relevant catalogue description and a written statement of defects. If we are satisfied from the evidence presented that the lot is a deliberate forgery we shall refund the money paid by you for the lot including any buyer’s premium provided that (1) if the catalogue description reflected the accepted view of scholars and experts as at the date of sale or (2) you personally are not able to transfer a good and marketable title to us, you shall have no rights under this condition. The right of return provided by this Condition is additional to any right or remedy provided by law or by these Conditions of Sale. GENERAL 17. We shall have the right at our discretion, to refuse admission to our premises or attendance at our auctions by any person. 18 (1) Any right to compensation for losses liabilities and expenses incurred in respect of and as a result of any breach of these Conditions and any exclusions provided by them shall be available to the seller and/or the auctioneer as appropriate. (2). Such rights and exclusions shall extend to and be deemed to be for the benefit of employees and agents of the seller and/or the auctioneer who may themselves enforce them. 19. Any indulgence extended to bidders buyers or sellers by us notwithstanding the strict terms of these Conditions or of the Terms of Consignment shall affect the position at the relevant time only and in respect of that particular concession only; in all other respects these Conditions shall be construed as having full force and effect. 22. Registration

All potential buyers must register for the sale prior to placing a bid. Registration information may be submitted in person at our reception desk, by fax or through our website at www.freemansauction.com. We will require proof of identification and residence and may require a credit card and/or a bank reference. By registering for the sale, the buyer acknowledges that he or she has read, understood and accepted Freeman’s Terms and Conditions of Sale.

Buyer’s Premium

A Buyer’s Premium will be added to the successful bid price and is payable by the buyer as part of the total purchase price. The Buyer’s Premium shall be: 25% on the first $50,000 of the hammer price of each lot, 20% on the portion from $50,001 through $1,000,000, and 12% thereafter.

Sales Tax

All items in the catalogue are subject to the 8% Pennsylvania and Philadelphia sales tax. Dealers purchasing for resale must register their tax numbers on current PA forms. Forms should be submitted to our Client Services office on the second floor.

Catalogue Descriptions

All item descriptions, dimensions and estimates are provided for guidance only. It is the buyer’s responsibility to inspect all lots prior to bidding to ensure that the condition is to their satisfaction. If potential buyers are unable to inspect lots in person, our specialists will be happy to prepare detailed Condition Reports on individual lots as quickly as possible. These are for guidance only, and all lots will be sold “as is” as per our Terms and Conditions of Sale.

Bidding

At the sale Registered bidders will be assigned a bidder number and given a paddle for use at the sale. Once the first bid has been placed, the auctioneer asks for higher bids in increments determined by the auctioneer. To place your bid, simply raise your paddle until the auctioneer acknowledges you. The auctioneer will not mistake a random gesture for a bid. By phone A limited number of telephone lines are available for bidding by phone through a Freeman’s representative. Phone lines must be reserved in advance. Requests must be submitted no later than 24 hours prior to the scheduled start of the sale. In writing Bid forms are available in the sale room and at the back of the catalogue. These should be submitted in person, by mail or by fax no later than one hour prior to the scheduled start of the sale. The auctioneer will bid on your behalf up to the limit indicated, but is not responsible for errors or failure to execute bids. On the internet A fully-illustrated catalogue is available on-line at www.freemansauction.com. Registered bidders may leave absentee bids through the web site and will receive email confirmation of their bid. Freeman’s is not responsible for errors or failure to execute bids.

Payment

Lots purchased will not be released until we have received full payment. Payment may be made in cash, by check, money order, or debit card. Payments by check must clear the bank before goods will be released.

Removal of Purchases

Deliveries will not be made during the time of the sale unless otherwise indicated by the auctioneer. All items must be paid for and removed within ten (10) working days of the sale. Purchases not so removed may be turned over to a licensed warehouse at the expense and risk of the purchaser.

Shipping and Packing

Responsibility for packing, shipping and insurance shall be exclusively that of the purchaser. Upon request, Freeman’s will provide the purchaser with names of professional packers and shippers known to us.

The square back decorated to show the young Pharoah in a palace setting as his Queen attends him, flanked by winged sides and inlaid square seat, raised on feline legs surmounted by lion’s heads and terminating in paw feet. H: 41, W: 22, D: 28 in. Provenance: Property of the Reading Public Museum, sold to benefit future acquisitions. Note: This and the following two lots were manufactured in Egypt very soon after the discovery of Tutankhamen’s tomb by Howard Carter in November 1922. They were exhibited in the Reading Museum and Art Gallery in Pennsylvania on the 30th of September 1928, to much acclaim, as a newspaper article dated from September 19th 1928 explains: “Reading has the distinction of being the only city in the world, with the exception of Cairo ... where these objects can be seen. The main feature of the exhibition is an exact reproduction of the throne chair of King Tut”.

The serpentine edged rectangular top centered by a monogram, opening to a cloth-lined interior flanked by two lidded compartments, above a frieze drawer and sliding wool box, raised on slender cabriole legs terminating in sabots. Lockplate signed “Paul Sormani, 10 Rue Charlot, Paris”. H: 29, W: 28 1/4, D: 19 1/4 in. Note: Paul Sormani (1817-1877), was born in Venice in 1817. He established his business in 1847 at 7, Cimetière Saint-Nicholas in Paris, moving in 1854 to 114, Rue du Temple, and in 1867 to 10, rue Charlot. Sormani exhibited at the 1849, 1855, 1862, 1867, 1878 and 1900 Exposition Universelle, winning numerous medals. His work was described in the catalogue of the 1867 Exposition Universelle as “toute sa production révèle une qualité d’exécution de tout premier ordre”. After Sormani’s death in 1877 his son Paul-Charles took over the business and later moved it to 134 boulevard Haussmann.

He won the Prix de Rome in 1813, and in 1827 he became a member of the Académie des beaux-arts and a professor at the École des Beaux-Arts. @lotProvenance:Note: The poetesse Louise Colet posed for Pradier on several occasions. Known by her contempories variously as “Penserosa”, or “the Muse” she was known to Pradier as ‘Sappho” and she was the model for two Sappho sculptures; as well as a monument to the city of Lille by Pradier in the Place de la Concorde, Paris. Gustave Flaubert met Louise Colet at Pradier’s studio when she was posing, and they famously had a tempestuous affair resulting in her being the inspiration for his novel, “Madame Bovary”. Freeman’s Terms & Conditions all property offered and sold (“property”) through samuel t. freeman & co, (“freeman’s”) shall be offered and sold on the terms and conditions set forth below which constitutes the complete statement of the terms and conditions on which all property is offered for sale. by bidding at the auction, whether present in person or by agent, by written bid, telephone, internet or other means, the buyer agrees to be bound by these terms and conditions. 1 Unless otherwise indicated, all Property will be offered by Freeman’s as agent for the Consignor. 2 Freeman’s reserves the right to vary the terms of sale and any such variance shall become part of these Conditions of Sale. 3 Buyer acknowledges that it had the right to make a full inspection of all Property prior to sale to determine the condition, size, repair or restoration of any Property. Therefore, all property is sold “ASIS”. Freeman’s is acting solely as an auction broker, and unless otherwise stated, does not own the Property offered for sale and has made no independent investigation of the Property. Freeman’s makes no warranty of title, merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose, or any other warranty or representation regarding the description, genuineness, attribution, provenance or condition to the Property of any kind or nature with respect to the Property. 4 Freeman’s in its sole and exclusive discretion, reserves the right to withdraw any property, at any time, before the fall of the hammer. 5 Unless otherwise announced by the auctioneer at the time of sale, all bids are per lot as numbered in the printed catalogue. Freeman’s reserves the right to determine any and all matters regarding the order, precedence or appropriate increment of bids or the constitution of lots. 6 The highest bidder acknowledged by the auctioneer shall be the buyer. The auctioneer has the right to reject any bid, to advance the bidding at his absolute discretion and in the event of any dispute between bidders, the auctioneer shall have the sole and final discretion either to determine the successful bidder or to re- offer and resell the article in dispute. If any dispute arises after sale, the Freeman’s sale record shall be conclusive in all respects. 7 If the auctioneer determines that any opening or later bid or any advance bid is not commensurate with the value of the Property offered, he may reject the same and withdraw the Property from sale.

8 Upon the fall of the hammer, title to any offered lot or article will immediately pass to the highest bidder as determined in the exclusive discretion of the auctioneer, subject to compliance by the buyer with these Conditions of Sale. Buyer thereupon assumes full risk and responsibility of the property sold, agrees to sign any requested confirmation of purchase, and agrees to pay the full price, plus Buyer’s Premium, therefore or such part, upon such terms as Freeman’s may require. 9 No lot may be removed from Freeman’s premises until the buyer has paid in full the purchase price therefor including Buyer’s Premium or has satisfied such terms that Freeman’s, in its sole discretion, shall require. Subject to the foregoing, all Property shall be paid for and removed by the buyer at his/her expense within ten (10) days of sale and, if not so removed, may be sold by Freeman’s, or sent by Freeman’s to a public warehouse, at the sole risk and charge of the buyer(s), and Freeman’s may prohibit the buyer from participating, directly or indirectly, as a bidder or buyer in any future sale or sales. In addition to other remedies available to Freeman’s by law, Freeman’s reserves the right to impose a late charge of 1.5% per month of the total purchase price on any balance remaining ten (10) days after the day of sale. If Property is not removed by the buyer within ten (10) days, a handling charge of 1% of the total purchase price per month from the tenth day after the sale until removal by the buyer shall be payable to Freeman’s by the buyer; Freeman’s shall charge 1.5% of the total purchase price per month for any property not so removed within 60 days after the sale. Freeman’s will not be responsible for any loss, damage, theft, or otherwise responsible for any goods left in Freeman’s possession after ten (10) days. If the foregoing conditions or any applicable provisions of law are not complied with, in addition to other remedies available to Freeman’s and the Consignor (including without limitation the right to hold the buyer(s) liable for the bid price) Freeman’s, at its option, may either cancel the sale, retaining as liquidated damages all payments made by the buyer(s), or resell the property. In such event, the buyer(s) shall remain liable for any deficiency in the original purchase

price and will also be responsible for all costs, including warehousing, the expense of the ultimate sale, and Freeman’s commission at its regular rates together with all related and incidental charges, including legal fees. Payment is a precondition to removal. Payment shall be by cash, certified check or similar bank draft, or any other method approved by Freeman’s. Checks will not be deemed to constitute payment until cleared. Any exceptions must be made upon Freeman’s written approval of credit prior to sale. In addition, a defaulting buyer will be deemed to have granted and assigned to Freeman’s, a continuing security interest of first priority in any property or money of, or owing to such buyer in Freeman’s possession, and Freeman’s may retain and apply such property or money as collateral security for the obligations due to due to Freeman’s. Freeman’s shall have all of the rights accorded a secured party under the Pennsylvania Uniform Commercial Code. 10 Unless the sale is advertised and announced as “without reserve”, each lot is offered subject to a reserve and Freeman’s may implement such reserves by bidding through its representatives on behalf of the Consignors. In certain instances, the Consignor may pay less than the standard commission rate where Freeman’s or its representative is a successful bidder on behalf of the Consignor. Where the Consignor is indebted to Freeman’s, Freeman’s may have an interest in the offered lots and the proceeds therefrom, other than the broker’s Commissions, and all sales are subject to any such interest. 11 No “buy” bids shall be accepted at any time for any purpose. 12 Any pre-sale bids must be submitted in writing to Freeman’s prior to commencement of the offer of the first lot of any sale. Freeman’s copy of any such bid shall conclusively be deemed to be the sole evidence of same, and while Freeman’s accepts these bids for the convenience of bidders not present at the auction, Freeman’s shall not be responsible for the failure to execute, or, to execute properly, any pre-sale bid. 13 A Buyer’s Premium will be added to the successful bid price and is payable by the buyer as part of the total purchase price. The Buyer’s

Premium shall be: 25% on the first $50,000 of the hammer price of each lot, 20% on the portion from $50,001 through $1,000,000, and 12% on the portion of the hammer price exceeding $1,000,000. 14 Unless exempted by law from the payment thereof, the buyer will be required to pay any and all federal excise tax and any state and/or local sales taxes, including where deliveries are to be made outside the state where a sale is conducted, which may be subject to a corresponding or compensating tax in another state. 15 Freeman’s may, as a service to buyer arrange to have purchased property posted and shipped at the buyer’s expense. Freeman’s is not responsible for any acts or omissions in packing or shipping of purchased lots whether or not such carrier recommended by Freeman’s. Packing and handling of purchased lots is at the responsibility of the buyer and is at the entire risk of the buyer. 16 In no event shall any liability of Freeman’s to the buyer exceed the purchase price actually paid. 17 No claimed modification or amendment of this Agreement on the part of any party shall be deemed extant, enforceable or provable unless it is in writing that has been signed by the parties to this Agreement. No course of dealing and no delay or omission on the part of Freeman’s in exercising any right under this Agreement shall operate as a waiver of such right or any other right and waiver on any one or more occasions shall not be construed as a bar to or waiver of any right or remedy of Freeman’s on any future occasion. 18 These Conditions of Sale and the buyer’s, the Consignor’s and Freeman’s rights under these Conditions of Sale shall be governed by, construed and enforced in accordance with the laws of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and Consignor and Buyer agree to the exclusive jurisdiction of the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Court of Common Pleas and the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.
