Porcelain wares reflective of nature enjoyed great popularity during the second and third quarters of the 18th century as advances in botany and the importation of unusual species from the colonies stimulated interest in natural forms. A variety of leaf-form dishes were produced with specific forms being employed for different purposes. Pickle dishes were crafted in the form of small leaves, while larger leaf forms, such as the overlapping cabbage leaf dishes or rare vine leaf dishes produced by Worcester and Chelsea, were typically employed for dessert services. A common feature to all is the realistic modeling in low relief of the veins, likely indicative of the forms being produced after real examples taken from nature. Small dessert tureens realistically modeled in a variety of forms including cauliflower and heads of lettuce were also popular and inspired by both examples from nature and earlier examples first produced by Meissen. 52 Worcester leaf form dish circa 1758 Each modeled in the form of a single lettuce leaf, the edge picked out in green, the veins in pink or puce, transfer printed with three moths. The ‘Blind Earl’ pattern derives its name from a special commission by the Earl of Coventry from the Worcester porcelain factory. Characterized by a high relief molded stem issuing roses and low relief molded leaves, dishes in this pattern have an unusual tactility. By legend they were designed in this manner for the Earl after he was blinded in a hunting accident and requested that his commission be decorated in a manner he could feel. Though records of the Earl’s accident indicate that it took place in either 1770 or 1780, the pattern was produced as early as the mid-1750s rendering the charming tale likely spurious. Nonetheless the pattern enjoyed great popularity throughout the second half of the 18th century and was used, often with some variations, by a number of porcelain factories including Chelsea and Worcester; it was produced in only three shapes: dessert plates, sweetmeat dishes and spoon trays. 58 Worcester ‘blind earl’ dish decorated in the workshop of james giles, circa 1770 Circular form with gilt scalloped rim, finely modeled with a twig issuing leaves and rosebuds and finely painted with a rose. The leaf cast baluster stem also bears similarities to a pair of balusters by Pierre-Philippe Thomire, circa 1810, illustrated in Odile Nouvel-Kammer’s Napoleon and the Art of the Empire Style 1800-1815, page 316. provenance: From the collection of a South Carolina lady. By descent through family from the collection of Virginia and Donald Russell, former senator of South Carolina, 107th Governor of the state, President of South Carolina University, and owner of the historically significant Evans-Russell House, in Spartanburg, South Carolina, where the garniture was displayed. note: Louis Moinet (French, 1768 - 1853) was a celebrated clockmaker and author of the widely lauded encyclopedia ‘Traite d’horlogerie’ published in 1848. Moinet created clocks for many of the 19th centuries most notable political figures, often in collaboration with the bronzier Pierre-Phillippe Thomire (1751-1843). A second generation bronzier, Thomire trained as a sculptor before working as the assistant of Jean-Claude-Thomas Duplessis, the artistic director of the Sèvres Porcelain Manufactor for whom he created gilt bronze mounts. In 1804 Thomire became a marchand-mercier and began selling decorative objects and furniture, providing many works for Napoleon, who appointed him Engraver to the Emperor in 1809 and Furniture Supplier to their Majesties in 1811. The design for Moinet and Thomire’s Minerva clock is particularly famous, as a gilt bronze version is one of few items still on display from the original collection of the White House. Purchased for James Monroe, who presided over the reconstruction of the White House after the British burned the capitol in 1814, the clock was displayed in the Blue Room which was furnished in the Empire Style. It would become the favorite clock of Henry Polk, the eleventh president, and admired by Harry Truman, the 33rd president, who lauded it as one of the few original pieces still within the White House collection at the time of his presidency. $15,000-20,000 See also illustration on page 72.

H: 16, W: 22 in. (plaque) provenance: Property of a Main Line lady. note: Massimiliano Soldani-Benzi (Montevarchi, Italy, 1656-1740) was one of the leading bronze casters and sculptors in Florence during the late Baroque period, enjoying the patronage of the Medici who appointed him Master of the Dies and Keeper of the Mint in Florence in 1682. In 1708 he was commissioned to produce allegorical reliefs of Summer and Autumn by Crown Prince Ferdinando de’Medici, and in 1711 completed further allegories of Spring and Winter. First modeled in terracotta, Soldani later produced bronze casts, the first as a gift to Ferdinando’s brother-in-law, the Elector Palatine, and the second, in 1715, at the commission of Lord Burlington who would later present the reliefs as gifts to George II between 1730 and 1733. The original terra cotta models are in the collection of the Palazzo Pitti, and the bronze casts in the National Museum, Munich and the Royal Collection at Windsor Castle; a third known casting of Summer and Autumn, circa 1715, are held in the Spencer Museum of Art at the University of Kansas. In 1743, a number of Massimiliano Soldani’s models were acquired by the Marchese Carlo Ginori for the Doccia porcelain factory he had established in 1735. Factory archives record the Four Seasons being produced by Anton Filippo Maria Weber in wax in 1744, and later produced in porcelain beginning in the late 1740s. In addition to the casts, Doccia produced a limited number of figural groups related to the reliefs. A Doccia group after the Allegory of Summer depicting Ceres in her chariot pulled by dragons, circa 1745, is held in the collection of the Toledo Museum of Art, 1993.17. $4,000-6,000

320 Rare Dutch ship model of the whaler “The Ijsbeer” circa 1650 Fully rigged three masted painted wood ship, the hull surmounted by an elevated poop deck painted in red, white and blue, pierced for ten cannons with orange portlids, carved with the Dutch lion to the prow and a polar bear to the stern and painted with a wavy water line below the wale, suspending anchors to each side, the keel fitted with custom stand. H: 40, W: 36, D: 16 in.

provenance: The ship was once included in the collection of the Enthoven family, prominent antique dealers in the Netherlands whose clients in the 19th century included the Royal Dutch Family. The Enthoven collection, including this model, was sold at auction by F. Muller & Co. of Amsterdam, October 26, 1932 where the piece was acquired by William Randolph Hearst (1863-1951), the famed American publishing and media magnate. Hearst acquired the ship through his company the International Studio Arts Corporation, a subsidiary he established to oversee the holdings and cataloguing of the fine art and antique collections he developed through the 1920s and 30s. This model is included as item 18 in volume 46 of his archives. In the late 1930s and early 1940s, portions of the William Randolph Collection including this model were famously sold through the New York City department store Gimbel Bros. where it was likely acquired by the present owner’s grandfather. note: During the 17th century the expansion of the shipping industry led to innovations in ship designs. Builders created scale models to work out technical details, and sometimes, in the case of models of war ships, to work on strategy. Models were created for civic purposes as well, and the creation of votive models is of particular note. Hung in the churches of harbour towns, these ships were created by shipbuilders and seaman hoping for safe passage and were often modeled on real ships used at the time. Their display acted as a public reminder of both the perils and prosperity afforded by trade at sea. Though rare today, such models can be found in museum collections, most notably the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and the National Maritime Musuem in Greenwich. A votive model of a Dutch East Indiaman ship, circa 1657, in the collections at Greenwich, is decorated with a wavy waterline painted around the hull similar to the that in the present model. $8,000-12,000 See also illustration on page 112.

336 Louis-Ernest Barrias (French, 1841-1905) la nature se dévoilant devant la science Gilt bronze, signed in cast and marked ‘P’ with the Susses Freres pastille. H: 24 3/4, W: 9, D: 6 1/2 in. note: Louis-Ernest Barrias (French, 1841-1905) first exhibited a version of this sculpture at the Paris Salon of 1893. Sculpted in white marble and depicting an entirely nude figure the sculpture was later acquired by the l’Ecole de Médecine in Bordeaux. In 1899 Barrias introduced a polychrome version modeled as the partially clad allegorical figure of nature lifting her veil to reveal herself to science. The second version was met with wide acclaim and is now included in the collection of the Musee d’Orsay. Bronze casts of the sculpture by Susse Frères were exhibited at the Exposition Universelle in 1900 and would go on to win the grand prix at the Universal Exhibition in Liège in 1905 where the bronzier Théodore Millet lauded them as ‘the finest of the works exhibited’. $12,000-18,000

337 Pierre Etienne Daniel Campagne, French (1851-1910) phryné devant ses juges Gilt bronze, depicting a nude maiden, her drapery trailing to the floor behind to reveal her body, standing on square base, signed in cast “D. H: 23 1/2, W: 10 1/2, D: 6 3/4 in. note: Depictions of the ancient Greek courtesan Phryne were popular during the 19th century as allegories of the rivalry between the arts of painting and sculpture. Phryne inspired depictions of Aphrodite by the painter Apelles and the sculptor Praxiteles; when later prosecuted for impiety, her resemblance to the goddess secured her acquittal when the orator Hypereides famously made the courtesan disrobe before the judges to show the beauty of her nude body. Campagne exhibited his sculpture of Phryne in plaster at the salon of 1893 and in marble in 1894; bronze versions were also created in a variety of sizes. $1,500-2,500

As a result, he specialized in small scale sculpture, creating more than 200 works, many of women and some inspired by the music of his time. The inspiration for Papillon has been attributed to the composer Gabriel Urbain Fauré. The sculpture is characteristic of Villanis’ style in its depiction of the figure with hollowed out eyes and the inclusion of the sculpture’s title in the casting of the base. literature: Hortulanus- de Mik, Josje. Carved in marble provided by François d’Orléans, and enameled in colors, the polychrome sculpture was exhibited at the Salon of 1869 where, as recorded by the Journal for the Society of Arts (Jun 4, 1869), it attracted great attention and discussion.
