Endangered Species Lots marked * are manufactured in whole or in part of restricted materials that may include tortoiseshell, ivory, mother-of-pearl, coral, rhinoceros horn, whalebone or marine ivory. Such materials may require specific licenses, certificates, or CITES documentation for import, export, moving between states in the U.S., or resale. Obtaining these documents may require scientific, laboratory or other expert analysis, in order to establish which species or genus the material came from. Freeman’s is unable to provide this information, and the obligation is on the purchaser of a lot containing any of these materials to ensure that they are able to obtain all the necessary or required documents should they need to, prior to bidding on the lot. If proper documentation or licenses etc. cannot be obtained for a purchased lot, the purchaser will still be required to make an on time payment for the lot as per our standard terms and conditions. Freeman’s cataloguing of the lots marked with this symbol * represents the best of our opinion, and the absence of this symbol from any lot description does not form a warranty that the lot will be free from any licensing or certification restrictions.

Phillip Rundell assembled one of Britain’s most important and successful silver manufacturing businesses and employed some of the most distinguished craftsmen of the period, including John Flaxman R.A., Thomas Stothard, and Paul Storr who joined the firm in 1806. During his time as lead silversmith at the company, Storr created numerous large-scale commissioned pieces for leading nobility and the English royalty. In 1819, preferring creative independence, Storr left Rundell, Bridge, and Rundell, and later formed a partnership with John Mortimer. His later work produced for his retail business of Storr & Mortimer, goldsmiths and jewelers on London’s Bond Street, focused increasingly on naturalistic and rococo inspired designs popular during the period. This is evident in this pair of William IV silver candlesticks made by Paul Storr in 1835. One is numbered “11” and the other “4”, indicating that these two are possibly from a commissioned set of twelve. Another pair has appeared at auction in recent years (Sotheby’s London, Lot 379, May 15, 2014), but none bore the monogram with coronet on the base of this pair. $10,000-15,000

25 Rare Victorian silver teapot designed by christopher dresser for elkington & co., birmingham, 1885-86 The circular-form body with engraved band of geometrical and linear design with similar engraving to handle and spout, the hinged cover with radiating sun motif, the underside with hallmarks, pattern number “16678”, registration number “Rd. 22365,” and engraved “Elkington & Co.” H: 6 1/2 in. 12.2 oz. note: Christopher Dresser (1834-1904), the Scottish-born designer, is remembered for his significant influence on the Aesthetic movement and as a contributor and revolutionary in the field of industrial design. He was an importer, retailer, and educator in subjects spanning botany to industrial production and created designs for many manufacturers in France, Great Britain, and the United States. Dresser was greatly inspired by his training in botany and later by his trip to Japan on behalf of the South Kensington Museum (now the Victoria & Albert Museum) in 1876. En route for Japan he delivered a series of three lectures at the Philadelphia Museum and School of Industrial Art and supervised the manufacture of wallpapers to his design for Wilson Fennimore. He was commissioned by Messrs Tiffany of New York to form a collection of art objects both old and new which, when displayed in 1877, were the hit of the New York exhibition season. In addition to being a designer, Dresser was also a published author and wrote many books on design and decoration, including The Art of Decorative Design in 1862 and Principles of Design in 1873. This teapot is one of the designs Dresser produced for Elkington & Co. around 1885. Although he had worked for the firm from the late 1860’s, his designs at this time were among the
most significant of his career. This teapot with its innovative geometric form and simple decoration of lines and dots is in stark contrast to the highly decorative Rococo revival style which dominated silverware at the time. An almost identical teapot is held at the British Museum in London (Registration no. 1980,1112.1).

After two years of military service, he began his studies at the Royal College of Art, where a four-piece tea service and tray secured him the Prince of Wales Scholarship. As a young designer in the 1950s, Benney focused on creating pieces that were new and fresh, and unlike what had been done before. He was strongly influenced by the minimalism of Scandinavian design, which ultimately translated into his own style celebrated for its clean and simple lines. By the 1960s, Gerald Benney became a recognizable and sought after name in the industry; his textured, or “bark” finish (created by accident while using a bent hammer), became one of the most recognized elements of his style. $1,200-1,800

provenance: From the collection of Lanny Vines, Alabama. Purchased from M.S. Rau Antiques, October 1999. Christie’s New York, Sale 9054, Lot 1, January 15, 1999. note: A family business, Reed & Barton’s roots date back to 1824 and it remains one of the oldest silversmiths in the United States. Started as Babbitt & Crossman, the firm initially produced Britannia ware, which quickly made way for production in silver-plate and sterling silver, which the manufacturer is best known for. During the Civil War, Reed & Barton manufactured weapons for Union troops and went on to be a prolific producer of silver-plate and sterling silver items. The firm’s work has been recognized at several exhibitions, most notably at the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition of 1876, where they were awarded with a medal of excellence for the creation of the “The Progress Vase.” From then on, Reed & Barton was selected to create
articles of sterling silver for several important occasions in American history, including numerous special orders by the U.S. Navy and various presidential commissions. The U.S. Navy requested flatware services for several battleships, including the USS Utah, California, Arizona, Minnesota, and South Dakota. Reed & Barton also took on several other important commissions, including a million-dollar award to design a
sterling silver dinner service for the Maharajah of Barwani in East India. In 1956, Senator John F. Kennedy and his wife were presented with a sterling silver Paul Revere punch set by Reed & Barton. The firm was later hired to craft a reproduction of a taperstick that belonged to Nelly Custis Lewis, the granddaughter of George Washington, which was presented to President Ronald Reagan and his wife, Nancy in honor of the anniversary of the birth of George Washington. Reed & Barton has continued to create special pieces and in 1980, the company took on its largest single order for the Saudi Arabian government, producing over 3,000 pieces. By tradition, this monumental sterling silver punch set was commissioned for the inauguration of President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1933. The set includes an urn-form punch bowl, large serving tray, and thirty goblets and bears no monograms or inscriptions. Although not confirmed, the “RS” numbers to the underside may indicate that these pieces were special ordered. $30,000-40,000

Petersen studied and learned under Jensen’s guidance for five years, in which time he developed his own technique and skill while adapting similar Art Nouveau elements and the distinct simplicity of Jensen’s style and incorporating it into his own craft. The work of Carl Poul Petersen represents an artistic style that possesses a strong European core.

As a new master silversmith, Petersen and his wife, Inger Jensen (1900-1976), daughter of Georg Jensen, left Denmark and emigrated to Canada in 1929. Although Canada was entering its own economic depression at the time, Petersen was hired shortly after his move as a mastersmith for Henry Birks & Sons, Ltd. Petersen’s style remained consistent through his use of naturalistic elements and floral motifs. Throughout his time at Henry Birks & Sons, Petersen familiarized himself with Canadian materials and began to incorporate traditionally Canadian
flowers and wild life into his Danish style. After ten years as a studio master, Petersen opened his own studio in 1944 which produced fine pieces of handhammered and -chased flatware and holloware. Carl Poul Petersen was at the forefront of Canadian modern silver design. It was during the 1950s and 60s that Canadians became increasingly aware of the Danish modern style and taste, at which point Petersen’s handcrafted pieces became highly sought-after. One of Petersen’s most famous commissions was the engraving and eventual replication of the NHL’s Stanley Cup in 1962. Petersen designed and executed a copy of the original trophy to be used during travel and to honor the winning team, while the original is housed in the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto. Petersen continued crafting handmade pieces of silver and jewelry until he retired in 1975. $300-500
