Silver from the Estate of William Fitch Hamilton lots 1-27

Freeman’s is pleased to be offering a selection of items from the Estate of William Fitch Hamilton (1926-2015) of Westchester County, NY and Bucks County, PA. Son of Colonel Charles and Katherine Hamilton, Mr. Hamilton was an avid collector, wine connoisseur, and talented bridge player. Passionate about early British silver, as well as Americana and Caucasian rugs, Mr. Hamilton purchased what attracted him, not what was necessarily in vogue. His considered eye and constant refinement of his collection proved to create a worthwhile group of early British silver, seen in Lots 1 through 27.

Silver from the Estate of William Fitch Hamilton 7 1 151917/104 Charles II silver tobacco box daniel rutty, london, 1661-62 Oval form raised on four bun feet, the hinged cover engraved with a Bishop’s mitre within ribbon-tied plume surround, with hinged latch to front, the interior with later engraved commemorative inscription reading “This Tobacco box of Bishop Sanderson, descended to me as follows: A.D. 1717 Neville King married Mary Middlemore, only child of Richd Middlemore by Elizabeth (Sanderson) his wife, daughter of Dr. Thomas Sanderson, who was the eldest son of the The Right Revd Loyal and Learned Casuist. Ashby Hall 1873 John Wm King BD 6th in descent.” H: 2 1/2, W: 7 3/4 in. 21 oz. provenance: Bishop Robert Sanderson (1587-1663), to his son Dr. Thomas Sanderson, to his daughter Elizabeth Sanderson Middlemore (D. 1701), to her daughter Mary Middlemore King, by descent to John William King (1873), by descent until sold Sotheby’s London, October 2002, Lot 486. The Charles L. Poor Collection, Sotheby’s New York, October 2006, Lot 215. Heritage Auction, Dallas, November 2009, Lot 71188. From the Estate of William Fitch Hamilton, a collector from Westchester County, NY and Bucks County, PA. note: This Charles II silver tobacco box is one of the few surviving silver tobacco boxes from the period. The original owner of the box, Robert Sanderson (1587-1663) spent the last years of his life as Bishop of Lincoln, a post he held since 1660. He studied at Rotherham grammar school and later at Lincoln College, Oxford, and held several positions in the church over his lifetime. One of the most notable was the Royal Chaplain to Charles I, to which he was

appointed in 1631 on the recommendation of Archbishop Laud, then the Bishop of London. It has been recorded that Charles I formed a personal relationship with Bishop Sanderson, stating “I carry my ears to hear other preachers, but I carry my conscience to hear Dr. Sanderson.” In 1642, he was appointed Professor of Divinity at Oxford, but did not perform any duties until 1646. Though Sanderson was appointed to the Westminster Assembly of Divines in 1643, a council convened to restructure the Church of England, he never sat because he refused to take the Solemn League and Covenant. Sanderson was strongly against the Puritans, yet forced by his parish at Boothby Pagnell, Lincolnshire, to revise the common prayer book in 1661. Sanderson aimed to resolve his own diocese as well as halt those puritans who stood against the reestablished church. Bishop Sanderson is well known for his studies and work in logic and theology, but he is also remembered as a student of antiquities and left several manuscripts to his son. He died in 1663, and passed this silver box onto his eldest son. It remained in the family for the next 340 years, until sold at auction in 2002. $12,000-18,000

provenance: Purchased at the John Dunn-Gardner (1811-1903) sale at Christie’s London, April 1902, for J. Pierpont Morgan. The Morgan Collection, Christie’s New York, October 26, 1982, Lot 106. Purchased by the present owner from S.J. Shrubsole, New York, NY, in 2010. From the Estate of William Fitch Hamilton, a collector from Westchester County, NY and Bucks County, PA. note: English silver from this period, chased with Chinese-inspired motifs, is rare and

can be considered an early expression of the Chinoiserie style. Chinoiserie is an entirely European style with inspiration that is exclusively Chinese. It heavily influenced taste throughout the late 17th century, the 18th century, and beyond, as Europeans began to reinterpret stylistic and decorative motifs that continued to emerge from the exotic and remote Far East. A tankard of similar form and decoration, circa 1685, is illustrated in Dawn Jacobson’s Chinoiserie, 1999, (pg. 29). Noted that it is entirely original and its decoration of “true chinoiseries” had “no imported prototypes,” that James II tankard predates the tankard at hand by only four years. Thus, both can be seen as early expressions of the Chinoiserie style in English decorative arts. $15,000-20,000 See also illustration on page 6

H: 2 3/4 in. (sugar). Total weight: 11 oz. provenance: From a Main Line, Philadelphia estate. A teapot of same design and decoration sold Freeman’s, May 20, 2015, Lot 25. note: Christopher Dresser (1834-1904), the Scottish-born designer, is remembered for his significant influence on the Aesthetic movement and as a contributor and revolutionary in the field of industrial design. He was an importer, retailer, and educator in subjects spanning botany to industrial production and created designs for many manufacturers in France, Great Britain, and the United States. This milk jug and sugar are two of the designs Dresser produced for Elkington & Co. around 1885. Although he had worked for the firm from the late 1860’s, his designs at this time were among the most significant of his career. The milk jug and sugar, with their innovative geometric form and simple decoration of lines and dots, are in stark contrast to the highly decorative Rococo revival style which dominated silverware at the time. An almost identical milk jug is held at the British Museum in London (Registration no. 1980,1112.3), while a teapot of the same form and decoration was sold at Freeman’s in May 2015. $6,000-8,000

The Collection of Betty Rhoads Wright lots 113-131 As an avid collector and philanthropist in Old Town, Alexandria, Virginia, Betty Rhoads Wright (1925-2015) spent her time helping others and improving the community. Mrs. Wright and her husband, Frank Lester Wright, formed a foundation known as “Wright to Read,” which promotes literacy through tutoring and mentoring of elementary students. Mrs. Wright was dedicated to historic preservation, and in 1979, Mr. and Mrs. Wright purchased a home in Alexandria known as “The Doctor Brown House.” This historic property once belonged to William Brown, the Surgeon General of the American Revolution and author of the first American Pharmacopeia. Betty Wright spent her life collecting antiques, serving on various philanthropic committees and boards, and remained a loyal and generous supporter of the organizations she held dear. Freeman’s is proud to offer this selection of silver from Mrs. Wright’s collection that includes pieces made by some of the most important English silversmiths, including Paul de Lamerie, Paul Storr, and Matthew Boulton.

provenance: Christie’s, London, October 19, 1988, Lot 202, from the Edward James Collection, West Dean Park. Christie’s, New York, September 17, 1990, Lot 134, from the Terence J. Fox Collection of Tea Equipage (illustrated on cover). From the Estate of Betty Rhoads Wright, Alexandria, VA. note: Tea was first introduced into England in the 1650’s and could cost as much as £10 per pound, when the average housemaid could expect to earn around £3 or £4 per year. Given the enormous expense of tea, the aristocracy commissioned new vessels and containers in fine materials equal to their precious contents that were stored under lock and key. This trend continued into the 1730’s, by which time, the polite consumption of tea in English drawing rooms was more widespread. Paul de Lamerie (1688-1751) was one of the most renowned silversmiths of his time recognized for his technical skill and innovative approach to forms and motifs. The various stylistic elements seen on these caddies are representative of Paul de Lamerie’s introduction of the Rococo style into English ornament. Other canisters of the

same form were exhibited at Goldsmith’s Hall in 1990 and illustrated in the catalog Paul de Lamerie: The Work of England’s Master Silversmith, London, 1990, no. 59. Tea caddies by de Lamerie are included in the museum collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (no. 13.42.36), the Victoria and Albert Museum (no. M.156:1, 2-1939), the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (no. 2001.103.1), the Portland Art Museum (no. 82.4.1A,B) and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (no. 97.28.1-.2). $40,000-60,000 See also illustration on page 45

From the Estate of Betty Rhoads Wright, Alexandria, VA. note: Paul Storr (1771-1844) began his career at age 14 when he apprenticed to the Swedish émigré silversmith Andrew Fogelberg. After his apprenticeship, Storr entered into partnership with

William Frisbee and registered his first mark in 1792. Shortly after, he began to use his PS mark which he registered several times throughout his career. Paul Storr had made some impressive pieces prior to 1800, most notably the solid gold font commissioned by the 3rd Duke of Portland, designed by Humphrey Repton and manufactured by Storr in 1797. However, his reputation as one of the most impressive English silversmith’s was cemented after he joined Phillip Rundell (1746-1827) of Rundell, Bridge, and Rundell. Phillip Rundell assembled one of Britain’s most important and successful silver manufacturing businesses and employed some of the most distinguished craftsmen of the period, including John Flaxman R.A., Thomas Stothard, and Paul Storr who joined the firm in 1806. The Kalo Shop Silver from a Prominent Private Collection lots 314-341

The Kalo Shop was one of the most important makers of 20th century hand wrought Arts & Crafts metalwork. Started in 1900 in Chicago by Clara Barck Welles and a small group of young women who had recently graduated from the Chicago Art Institute, the Kalo Shop produced a wide range of entirely handmade hollowware, flatware, and jewelry. Named after the Greek word for ‘beauty’, the Kalo Shop flourished by creating beautifully made objects with timeless designs, in copper, brass, gold, and especially silver. Its classic forms were extremely popular, influential, and widely imitated. While most other period metalcrafters had short-lived boutique operations, the Kalo Shop employed many of the most talented silversmiths of the era (including Grant Wood, Esther Meacham, Matthias Hanck, Falick Novick, Heinrich Eicher, Emery Todd, and Julius Randahl) and prospered by catering to an upscale clientele for seven decades.

Therefore, all property is sold “AS-IS”. Freeman’s is acting solely as an auction broker, and unless otherwise stated, does not own the Property offered for sale and has made no independent investigation of the Property. Freeman’s makes no warranty of title, merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose, or any other warranty or representation regarding the description, genuineness, attribution, provenance or condition to the Property of any kind or nature with respect to the Property. 4 Freeman’s in its sole and exclusive discretion, reserves the right to withdraw any property, at any time, before the fall of the hammer. 5 Unless otherwise announced by the auctioneer at the time of sale, all bids are per lot as numbered in the printed catalogue. Freeman’s reserves the right to determine any and all matters regarding the order, precedence or appropriate increment of bids or the constitution of lots. 6 The highest bidder acknowledged by the auctioneer shall be the buyer. The auctioneer has the right to reject any bid, to advance the bidding at his absolute discretion and in the event of any dispute between bidders, the auctioneer shall have the sole and final discretion either to determine the successful bidder or to re- offer and resell the article in dispute. If any dispute arises after sale, the Freeman’s sale record shall be conclusive in all respects. 7 If the auctioneer determines that any opening or later bid or any advance bid is not commensurate with the value of the Property offered, he may reject the same and withdraw the Property from sale. 8 Upon the fall of the hammer, title to any offered lot or article will immediately pass to the highest bidder as determined in the exclusive discretion of the auctioneer, subject to compliance by the buyer with these Conditions of Sale. Buyer thereupon assumes full risk and responsibility of the property sold, agrees to sign any requested confirmation of purchase, and agrees to pay the full price, plus Buyer’s Premium, therefore or such part, upon such terms as Freeman’s may require. 9 No lot may be removed from Freeman’s premises until the buyer has paid in full the purchase price therefor including Buyer’s Premium or has satisfied such terms that Freeman’s, in its sole discretion, shall require. Subject to the foregoing, all Property shall be paid for and removed by

the buyer at his/her expense within ten (10) days of sale and, if not so removed, may be sold by Freeman’s, or sent by Freeman’s to a public warehouse, at the sole risk and charge of the buyer(s), and Freeman’s may prohibit the buyer from participating, directly or indirectly, as a bidder or buyer in any future sale or sales. In addition to other remedies available to Freeman’s by law, Freeman’s reserves the right to impose a late charge of 1.5% per month of the total purchase price on any balance remaining ten (10) days after the day of sale. If Property is not removed by the buyer within ten (10) days, a handling charge of 1% of the total purchase price per month from the tenth day after the sale until removal by the buyer shall be payable to Freeman’s by the buyer; Freeman’s shall charge 1.5% of the total purchase price per month for any property not so removed within 60 days after the sale. Freeman’s will not be responsible for any loss, damage, theft, or otherwise responsible for any goods left in Freeman’s possession after ten (10) days. If the foregoing conditions or any applicable provisions of law are not complied with, in addition to other remedies available to Freeman’s and the Consignor (including without limitation the right to hold the buyer(s) liable for the bid price) Freeman’s, at its option, may either cancel the sale, retaining as liquidated damages all payments made by the buyer(s), or resell the property. In such event, the buyer(s) shall remain liable for any deficiency in the original purchase price and will also be responsible for all costs, including warehousing, the expense of the ultimate sale, and Freeman’s commission at its regular rates together with all related and incidental charges, including legal fees. Payment is a precondition to removal. Payment shall be by cash, certified check or similar bank draft, or any other method approved by Freeman’s. Checks will not be deemed to constitute payment until cleared. Any exceptions must be made upon Freeman’s written approval of credit prior to sale. In addition, a defaulting buyer will be deemed to have granted and assigned to Freeman’s, a continuing security interest of first priority in any property or money of, or owing to such buyer in Freeman’s possession, and Freeman’s may retain and apply such property or money as collateral security for the obligations due to due to Freeman’s. Freeman’s shall have all of the rights accorded a secured party under the Pennsylvania Uniform Commercial Code. 10 Unless the sale is advertised and announced as “without reserve”, each lot is offered subject to a reserve and Freeman’s may implement such reserves by bidding through its representatives on behalf of the Consignors. In certain instances, the Consignor may pay less than the standard commission rate where Freeman’s or its representative is a successful bidder on behalf of the Consignor. Where the Consignor is indebted to Freeman’s, Freeman’s may have an interest in the offered lots and the proceeds therefrom, other than the broker’s Commissions, and all sales are subject to any such interest.
