One highlight of this sale sure to bring a great deal of attention is the Collection of Newport Jewels from the Estate of Julia Sands Chase. The Sands were a prominent naval family, instrumental in making Newport the yachting center it is today. Julia’s great grandfather Dr. Austin Ledyard Sands was an original incorporator on the medical board of the Newport Hospital in 1873. He traveled the world extensively, and died in 1877 in Cairo, Egypt. It was during these trips that Dr. Austin purchased many jewels for his wife Julia in London, as the original receipts that accompany some of jewelry are clearly marked, ‘Mrs. Austin Sands, London 1883-1894’. Included in this prestigious collection are a Belle Époque emerald and diamond stomacher and a pair of natural pearl, diamond, silver and white gold drop earrings.
